THE HISTORY OF DUNNES STORES
DUNNES Stores opened its first store on Patrick Street in Cork in 1944 - and it was an instant hit.
Shoppers from all over the city rushed to the store to snap up quality clothing at pre-war prices in Ireland’s first ‘shopping frenzy’.
During the excitement, a window was forced in and the police had to be called to help control the crowds hoping to bag founder Ben Dunne’s ‘Better Value’ bargains.
Dunnes later opened more stores in the 1950s and began to sell groceries in 1960 – starting with apples and oranges.
The retailer said: “Fruit was expensive at the time and Ben Dunne yet again offered Better Value than anyone else in town.
“Over time, our food selection has grown and that spirit of good value has remained strong.
“Now we offer a wide range of carefully-sourced foods from both local Irish suppliers and overseas.”
The retailer’s first Dublin store opened its doors in 1957 on Henry Street and a super store on South Great Georges Street was unveiled in 1960.
They added: “In 1971, our first Northern Irish store opened, and many others soon followed.
“Expansion continued in the 1980s in Spain, and later into Scotland and England.”
Dunnes now has 142 stores and employs 15,000 people.

BBC racing star John Hunt read out a heartbreaking message his daughter shared before she was brutally killed by her ex-boyfriend.
Speaking publicly for the first time since his wife and two daughters were murdered, John broke down in tears as he recalled a TikTok video about love that Louise, 25, had reposted before her death.
BBCJohn got emotional as he read out the message on the TikTok video[/caption]
FacebookLouise shared a message saying she had no regrets about love[/caption]
PAKyle Clifford was handed a whole-life sentence[/caption]
Louise had broken up with Clifford 13 days before, telling friends he had a nasty temper.
Pausing to gather himself during the BBC interview, he explained that he was so proud of his girls for leaving behind a “legacy of love”.
Reading out the message in the TikTok video, he said: “My heart is the best part about me and who I am as a person.
“I will never be embarrassed for loving someone with everything in me.
“Because that’s how I would want someone to love me.
“Yes, it didn’t work out, but I don’t regret loving him or how hard I loved.
“I’m proud of myself for realising that love is always worth giving, even when it may not be received.”
John added: “They weren’t Louise’s words but they could well have been.
“As you can tell from my reaction now, I’m so proud of them for living like that and loving like that.”
John went on to say that he did not want his loved ones to be defined by their deaths.
He told how he is still “very close” to his loved ones and speaks to his girls and wife as soon as he wakes up everyday, almost a year on since their deaths.
Speaking to Victoria Derbyshire, he said: “From the moment I wake up, I say good morning to each of them.
“Sometimes I say out loud to Hannah and Louise, ‘sorry I can’t be with you, I’m with your mum at the moment’.
“As I close my eyes at night, I chat to them as well.
“They’re very close to me all the time.”
Carol, Louise, and Hannah were found dead at the family home in Bushey, Hertfordshire, in Julylast year.
Following the deaths, John said the devastation he and his surviving daughter Amy feel “cannot be put into words”.
But the brave racing commentator returned to work just 60 days after the horrific deaths of his family.

Footage released by cops shows Clifford breaking down during a police interview as he is asked about a note he wrote to his family.
He said he did not “want to live my life without her” after Louise broke up with him two weeks before the attack.
A harrowing trial was told the monster hatched the “carefully planned and executed” plot to attack Louise and her family after she broke up with him.
On the day of the murders, evil Clifford tricked his way inside after claiming to Carol that wanted to give Louise her belongings back following their break up.
He “brutally attacked” Carol five times with a knife, covering up her body before murdering Louise and Hannah with a crossbow.
When police arrived, they discovered Hannah collapsed in the doorway and Louise bound in the snug next to her mum’s body.

ALCOHOLISM can affect people in all sorts of ways – and the signs of someone being dependent on it can often be challenging to spot.
Just days ago, Brad Pitt, 61, opened up on his battle with alcoholism after his bitter split from actress Angelina Jolie, 50.
As Brad Pitt opens up on his battle with alcoholism, here we reveal the eight signs your partner may be going through something similarWENNGettyThe Hollywood star reveals his life spun out of control following his bitter split from actress Angelina Jolie[/caption]
Sandra ParkerSandra Parker, the UK’s number one sober coach, has shared how to help loved ones[/caption]
GettyShe also acknowledged what not to say[/caption]
The actor sat down with Hollywood podcaster Dax Shepard and was honest about his issues with drugs, booze and addiction, and how his life spun out of control after his marriage breakdown.
And while the majority of us like to enjoy an alcoholic beverage now and again, whether that’s a glass of wine or a few beers, for some people, alcohol can be a huge issue.
Widespread issue
Hundreds of thousands of adults in England are considered to have alcohol dependency.
In 2019 to 2020, Public Health England found an estimated 608,416 adults were dependent on alcohol – a two per cent increase from 2015 to 2016.
Not only this, but according to a 2021 study, people with common mental disorders, such as depression, anxiety and phobia, are twice as likely to report an alcohol use disorder than people without common mental disorders.
Expert advice
For those eager to know more about the signs of alcoholism, Sandra Parker, the UK’s number one sober coach has shared her top advice.
The founder of Just the Tonic tells Fabulous what you should know if you are “worried about your partner’s drinking but unsure if it’s really a problem”, plus “what to do about it”.
Sandra tells us: “In my role as a sobriety and control alcohol coach I have worked with hundreds of successful people – from entrepreneurs to sports professionals – and I’ve seen how easily drinking can shift from social to dependency, especially for high achievers.”
As a result, Sandra reveals the signs to look out for if you are concerned about your partner.
Signs to look for
Not only does she warn against “that nightly glass of wine that has become a full bottle to ‘take the edge off’,” but she claims that your partner may have an issue if they “wait until the kids are in bed to start drinking.”
She also alerts against people “hiding empties or downplaying how much they drink” and those who are “increasingly exhausted.”
Additionally, Sandra claims that “what used to be weekend drinking has crept into every evening” could indicate alcohol dependency, while those who “make excuses to drink more,” could be in trouble.
How to get help with alcohol
There are plenty of helpful resources and tools to help you with your drinking issues.
Drinkline is the national alcohol helpline. If you’re worried about your own or someone else’s drinking, you can call this free helpline in complete confidence. Call 0300 123 1110 (weekdays 9am to 8pm, weekends 11am to 4pm).
Alcoholics anonymous is a free self-help group. Its “12 step” programme involves getting sober with the help of regular support groups.
Al-Anon is a group for family members or friends struggling to help a loved one
Adfam is a national charity working with families affected by drugs and alcohol
But that’s not all, as Sandra acknowledges that those who “get defensive or change the subject if you mention their drinking”.
Those who “stay up late drinking alone after everyone’s asleep,” could also need help to battle their drinking.
How to help a loved one
If you’ve spotted any of these signs in your loved ones and are concerned about someone you love and their drinking, here’s what works.
Change is possible – with the correct support people can get complete control of their relationship with alcohol without feeling deprived
Sandra Parker
Sandra advises: “Share your concerns in a kind non-judgemental way using specific examples.
“Listen without criticism if they open up. Support any positive changes they try to make.
“Understand they might need professional help. Know that change is possible – with the correct support people can get complete control of their relationship with alcohol without feeling deprived – even if they have been struggling for decades.”
Do YOU want to give up alcohol?
IF you want to give up alcohol, Sandra Parker, the UK’s number one sober coach has shared her advice.
The founder of ‘Just the Tonic’ advises: “Focus on what you’re noticing yourself. Be honest with yourself about what you’re drinking.
“If you’ve been trying this for a while, you probably need help.
“I always advise people to try to cut down rather than just stop, because if you try to stop, it’s like you’re just ripping the alcohol out and you’re not really working out why you’re drinking.
“Get expert help.”
Even more importantly, it’s crucial that you know what not to say to someone struggling, as Sandra adds: “This is what people often say which makes things worse: ‘Just have the one’ and ‘Why can’t you just be like a normal drinker?’.
Additionally, Sandra warns against saying ‘You just need more willpower’ and questioning ‘Can’t you just cut down?’.
Sandra, who once battled alcohol addiction herself, highlights that what Brad’s story proves is that “alcohol dependency is not about success or willpower.”
She recognises that for many, just like Brad, alcohol can become “a way of coping.”
As a result, she says: “It’s about recognising when alcohol has taken control and getting the right support to change.”

BEING pied is never fun, but being dumped before a summer of love has even begun must have left these islanders feeling burnt.
We are hurtling toward week three in the villa, and the dumpings are coming thick and fast. Lock-in, here’s everyone who has been sent packing so far.
ITV
Who left Love Island?
The revolving door of singletons entering the villa seems to only get faster, and Wednesday night’s dumping has definitely left some viewers feeling a bit whiplashed.
Four! Yes, four islanders were sent packing, with three not even having the chance to wear more than a few of the outfits they’d packed for a summer in Mallorca.
However, the biggest shock of the night came from on long-standing Islander being dumped – being snubbed for a new bombshell…
Shea Mannings
The exit of Shea was the biggest shock of the night.
After Helena, Dejon, Emily and Remell had all been chosen by the new bombshells to enter the sleepover villa, they were then told by Maya to choose if they wanted to stick in their current couple or recouple.
Shutterstock EditorialShea entered the villa as a bomshell alongside Remell[/caption]
The former cabin crew staff, Helena, was the only one who decided to recouple, choosing Lioness Alessia Russo’s bombshell brother Giorgio.
Giorgio has extended his stay in the villa, but will he miss his sister’s Euro success?Shutterstock Editorial
The decision left Shea single, and after receiving a text telling the semi-professional footballer that his time was up, he knew he was not getting any extra time in the villa.
After leaving, the dad-of-one shared his thoughts on his relationship with Helena.
He said: “I think it was more of a friendship to be honest, so she was probably correct to make her decision.
“It was just a friend thing but we were going to explore it anyway.”
He added: “Obviously you never know, but as soon as I found out I was single, I kind of knew my time was up. I was just gutted.”
Caprice Alexandra
Caprice owns a nursery and is from RomfordShutterstock Editorial
Caprice was one of two blonde bombshells to have entered the villa to shake up the couples.
However, the 26-year-old nursery owner was sent back to Romford after Dejon decided to stick wit his partner Meg.
Shutterstock EditorialDejon and Caprice even shared a snog in a steamy game[/caption]
But after leaving the villa, Caprice did not hold back about the reason she left.
She said: “I expected it. From the beginning I felt like he knew what he was going to do.
“I think he’s playing a bit of a game though, but I expected it from him.”
Poppy Harrison
As the second of our blonde bombshells to enter the villa in recent days, Poppy chose to try and steal Remell.
Poppy was only in the villa for a few daysShutterstock Editorial
She invited the influencer to the sleepover villa, but failed to win him over.
Instead Remell chose to stay coupled with Alima, leaving Poppy single.
After leaving the villa, Poppy was confused on why she had been dumped.
Shutterstock EditorialRemell allegedly gave Poppy a false promise[/caption]
The bombshell said: “[I am] shocked and surprised.
“I feel like Remell perhaps didn’t go with his true feelings, he said less than 12 hours before on the truth or dare game that he’d recouple with me, and he wanted to take things further.”
Will Means
Will was yet another bombshell who made an early exit.
The Norfolk-born and bred fitness trainer chose to swoon Emily.
Will was voted the fourth fittest farmer in the UK by Farmers’ Weekly in 2023.Shutterstock Editorial
But while Will means well, he was no match for 25-year-old Irish rugby player Conor.
Emily chose to stick with Conor, leaving Will the farmer single.
Malisha Jordan
It had been a relatively calm week ahead of Wednesday’s night mass axing.
Shutterstock EditorialMalisha arrived in the villa late and failed to make waves with the lads[/caption]
The 24-year-old teaching assistant was a late arrival to the villa.
She had tried to win the heart of Dejon, who decided to stay coupled with original beau Meg, leaving Malisha single.
She was not alone after Toni had also been left single in a dramatic recoupling.
However, the choice came down to 22-year-old Harrison Solomon (yet another footballer in the villa) to decide the girls’ fate.
Malisha’s time in the villa came to an end after Harrison decided to save Toni.
Blu Chegini
Shutterstock EditorialBlu was one of the original Islanders and originally was coupled with Alima[/caption]
In probably the most savage scene on Love Island this year, Blu Chegini was dumped from the villa.
After Shea and Remell slow-mo walked their way into the hearts of the girls, only one managed to couple up as Alima picked Remell.
Blu was therefore left single alongside Shea and in a cruel twist, the pair had to decide which one of them should leave.
ErotemeThe pair didn’t hold back as they tried to keep their Love Island hopes alive[/caption]
After the pair exchanged a war of words and were left decision-less, the choice fell to the group, who picked to keep newbie Shea.
Sophie Lee
On June 11 2025, former fire-breather Sophie Lee was dumped in a brutal twist, making her the first islander to leave the villa.
Motivational speaker Sophie Lee is the first to be evicted from the Love Island villaEroteme
The 29-year-old was evicted from the villa after newly-single Shakira Khan picked Harry Cooksley, sending Sophie home immediately.
The previous night, Shakira had found herself single after bombshell Toni Laites, 24, picked to couple up with Ben Holbrough, leaving Shakira to graft all with all the coupled-up boys.
Maya Jama returned to the villa, revealing the shock twist that the lads could nominate themselves to recouple with Shakira.
While originally also meant to feature Kyle Ashman, the 23-year-old was axed from the show days before the launch after it was revealed that he was wrongly suspected to be involved in a machete attack.
Here’s who remains in the villa.

THE HISTORY OF PENNEYS
THE Penneys brand grew from humble beginnings on Dublin's Mary Street, where it opened its first store in 1969.
Known as Primark outside Ireland, the company was the brainchild of Garfield Weston, who hired Dubliner Arthur Ryan to make his vision reality.
Penneys branched into the UK in 1973 with its first store opening in Derby. The UK now has 191 Primark stores in total.
However, the Penneys name could not travel to Britain as the American retailer JC Penney had the right to use the name in the region.
And in 2006, the expansion into Europe began with an opening in Spain, followed by the Netherlands, Portugal, Germany, Belgium, Austria, France and Italy.
Primark went Stateside for the first time in September 2015, with the opening of a store in Boston. There are now 27 stores in America with branches in Florida, Brooklyn, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
The retailer’s opened its largest store in Birmingham in 2019.
It spans five floors and features Primark’s biggest beauty studio to date, a barbers and three restaurants.
