A medical transport jet reportedly crashed head first into the ground just moments after taking off.
The nearby golf club was evacuated following the incident, with a bartender describing it as “a big heatwave” as he saw “a massive fireball” in the sky.
Video footage taken from the golf course shows a group of shocked golfers racing towards a plume of smoke.
One man can be heard yelling “F***ing hell, look. Look at this.”
He then moves closer to the scene, asking the others what has happened.
A golf cart can be seen driving towards the incident.
A huge cloud of black smoke can be seen in the distance.
The Beech B200 Super King Air was reportedly set to travel to Lelystad in the Netherlands, with an estimated departure time of 3.45pm.
It was equipped with medical systems for transporting patients, although it is unclear whether a patient was onboard.
Witnesses described seeing a “huge fireball” at Southend Airport this afternoon at around 4pm, with Essex County Fire and Rescue called to the incident at 3.58pm.
They said the pilots of the plane had waved at children shortly before the collision.
The twin-engined turboprop plane can carry around 12 people, although it has not been confirmed how many were in the plane at the time of the crash.
London Southend Airport said in a statement: “We can confirm there has been a serious incident at London Southend Airport this afternoon involving a general aviation aircraft.
“We are working closely with the local authorities and will be able to provide more information as soon as possible.”
A statement from Essex Police reads: “We remain on the scene of a serious incident at Southend Airport.
“We were alerted shortly before 4pm to reports of a collision involving one 12-metre plane.
“We are working with all emergency services at the scene now and that work will be ongoing for several hours.”
Essex Police have issued an update that they have opened a dedicated online portal and phone line for anyone with information.
They added: “Flights at the airport were quickly grounded to ensure work could immediately begin on extinguishing the flames as quickly as possible.
“We have put a wide cordon in place to ensure all our emergency service colleagues can carry out their work safely, and we will be doing so overnight and into tomorrow morning.”

Chief Superintendent Morgan Cronin said: “In these very early stages it is vital we gather the information we need, and continue supporting the people of Essex.
“Please help us keep our emergency lines open by using these specific channels if you’re contacting us about this incident.
“We are working closely with all at the scene, as well as the Air Accident Investigation Branch, to establish what has happened today and why.”
Two fire crews from Southend, two from Rayleigh Weir and Basildon, and off road vehicles from Billericay and Chelmsford attended the scene.
The East of England Ambulance service announced that they have sent four ambulances, a rapid response vehicle, four hazardous area response team vehicles, three senior paramedic cars and Essex and Herts Air Ambulance to the scene.
All flights from Southend Airport departing today have been cancelled or diverted to alternative airports.

The hottest month in Girona is July and with temperatures now reaching 35C it is the perfect time to visit.
Girona is one of Spain’s most charming cities, famous for its medieval old town, colourful riverside houses and world-famous wine.
And Ryanair flights from Dublin start at just €50 next month.
Situated in the northeast of Catalonia, this sunshine spot sits between the Pyrenees and the Costa Brava and attracts thousands each summer.
Girona is also more budget-friendly than bigger Spanish cities like Barcelona or Madrid, making it a great choice for a sunny city break without the crowds.
The city is built along the River Onyar, with fabulous pastel-coloured houses lining the water and stone bridges connecting different parts of the old town.
It’s also close to some of the most stunning beaches in the region, just 30 minutes from the Costa Brava’s crystal-clear waters.
These include Platja de Castell and Sa Conca – both popular for their golden sands, calm waves and cliff views.
During the warmer months, water-based activities like paddleboarding, snorkelling and boat tours are hugely popular among tourists and locals alike.
The city’s Old Town, or “Barri Vell” is another must-see, with narrow cobbled streets, well-preserved medieval walls, and the famous Cathedral of Girona – the widest Gothic nave in the world.
Girona’s Jewish Quarter, known as El Call, is one of the best-preserved in Europe.
This tourist hot-spot features a maze of steep alleyways and hidden courtyards that offer a glimpse into the cities historic Jewish past.
For art enthusiasts, Girona’s many museums, such as the Museu d’Història de Girona and the Museu d’Art, offer a deeper insight into its rich history and Catalan heritage.
Along with its natural beauty, Girona is known for its vibrant culinary scene, with many restaurants offering a mix of traditional Catalan andMediterraneandishes.
The region’s wines, especially from the nearby Empordà region, are also world-famous – and their local red and white wines cost only €3 a glass.
LOTS OF HISTORICAL SITES
Another must-see for visitors is Girona’s city walls, or the “Passeig de la Muralla,” which date back to the Roman era.
The area also offers spectacular views over the city and the surrounding mountains, making it a must for photographers and history buffs alike.
For fans of the HBO series Game of Thrones, a visit to Girona is a must, as several major scenes from the show were filmed across the city.
People have taken to Tripadvisor to share their reviews.
One person wrote: “Absolutely fantastic! Old town was so beautiful and your could spend hours looking at every detail! We found it even more beautiful than some places in Barcelona.
Another said: “Medieval walls, neo-Gothic churches with their gargoyles, gardens, stone stairs, bridges.. stunning.”

STEP AWAY from the Amtrak oatmeal.
American long distance trains are bad enough but the food they serve is even worse.

AFPChelsea face Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup final in New Jersey[/caption]
The ‘porridge’ they serve makes the infamous British Rail pork pie of the 1970s look like the top of the menu fare from a Michelin Star restaurant.
And it’s not cheap either.
Around £6 per pot of purple sludge that when mixed with a jet of boiling hot water forms an indigo mess that is as arduous on the stomach as the painfully slow services that run between some cities.
You may discover this next year when the USA hosts the real World Cup – a coming together of 48 nations competing for the biggest prize in international football.
Fans and players will be criss-crossing this vast country in many ways.
For Chelsea during the Club World Cup this summer it has been first class travel for a whole month – flights and five star hotels.
Cole Palmer will hopefully be following similar pathways nextsummer with England.
But wherever way you travel, trekking around this massive country to compete in or even watch a football tournament is wearing.
Dillon forked out £6 on awful oatmeal on the train
America has hosted a World Cup before. In 1994, when then Ireland boss Jack Charlton warned that someone could die from the heat.
The world is warmer now than it was back in the 1990s and will be even warmer next year.
Palmer has talked of the two hour flights everywhere draining his legs and his soul.

GettyPalmer and PSG star Ousmane Dembele of PSG posed for snaps during a visit to the Top of the Rock at Rockefeller Center on Saturday[/caption]
Unfortunately, he will have to go through it all again because Americans love flying and driving.
Back in 1987 there was a hit movie – Planes, Trains and Automobiles – a comic tale of two stranded men trying to make it home for Christmas by any means when snow puts paid to their hopes of taking a jet home.
It’s planes and cars for the people over here. The trains are a joke.
At least the one that took 12½ hours to carry me just 550 miles from Charlotte to Philadelphia to catch up with the Chelsea charabanc as they moved from city to city playing games.
You can just about take a similar journey by rail in the UK but you might fall off the end of our little country into the sea at the end.
But it wouldn’t take more than half a day to do it either. It would take around half that time.
Amtrak’s number 80 service from North Carolina to Pennsylvania is an experience. Good or bad is debatable.
They know that the 6.45am departure time means passengers are going to get hungry pretty quickly, and they have a captive market for the stuff they pass off as food as you chug along at no more than 40mph with a stinky old diesel engine dragging the carriages behind it like some sad old pack donkey.
And once you reach Washington, brace yourself for a half hour wait while the diesel loco is uncoupled and the electric one hooked up – only then can you speed along at a decent pace.
Fans have been warned to prepare for frequent delays at the 2026 World Cup as extreme weather wreaks havoc at the Club World Cup
Chelsea began their Club World Cup campaign in Atlanta and were so convinced they would win their group that they earmarked Miami as their next training base.
It didn’t quite work out that way and they ended as runners up.
But still they chose sunny Florida and glamorous South Beach as a temporary HQ.
This meant flying to their last 16 game in Charlotte and then back up north to Philly for their quarter final win over Palmeiras.
From there’s been onwards to New York, The Big Apple, and while it’s luxury all the way for the players, they are still getting fed up with being cooped up in hotel rooms and strange beds.
Downtime for them has been ping pong, basketball, dinners together and walks.
Only last week French defender Malo Gusto walked right past me in Greenwich Village, engaged with a couple of pals and having his photo taken the whole time.
The thing with America is that it doesn’t need to sell itself. It’s the richest and most entertaining country in the world. And it knows it.
Unsurprisingly, being run by someone like Donald Trump means the US is wrapped up in itself.
It’s not been difficult finding a local who has no clue that the Club World Cup is actually happening within their borders.
There won’t be so much ignorance next year at the real World Cup but don’t bet against it.

But he blocked access, refused to leave and paid rent only once in seven years, the couple say.
When he eventually fled the property in Nuneaton, Warks, they were greeted by scenes of utter squalor.
Stomach-churning photos show thousands of lager cans strewn across the floors of almost every room — with dozens more stacked up on the window sills and shelves.
Former DPD worker Chris, 70, said: “We just couldn’t believe it.”
And grand-of-three Sandra, 58, called the smell “horrendous”.
She added: “The rubbish was waist-high when he left in January — it was shocking.”
The kind-hearted couple agreed to help the pal, who was about to be made homeless.
They moved him into the flat, which they originally bought for daughter Rose, and asked for only £30 a week to cover the service charge and ground rent.
Sandra said: “We were trying to be kind but in the end we just feel utterly exploited.”

President Trump was joined by first lady Melania Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino in the stands looking down at the pitch.
Pictures show the trio standing side-by-side as the US national anthem was performed pre match.
When they were first shown on the big screen, a rapturous applause could be heard across the huge stadium.
Trump – standing in his traditional navy suit and long red tie – held a proud salute during the Star Spangled Banner performance
His wife Melania also held her hand up across her chest honouring America’s brave troops.
She stunned in a luxury white dress, thick Christian Dior sunglasses and a black coat which sat over her shoulders.
Infantino hosted the couple in the executive suit just weeks after he spoke with Trump in the White House about the 2026 World Cup.
The global tournament is set to take place across the United States, Mexico and Canada and will include a new expanded 48-team format.
MetLife Stadium is poised to host the FIFA World Cup final – marking the first time the US will hold the feted event since 1994.
Today’s game between two European cup winners has already been labelled as a dress rehearsal for soccer’s biggest game in less than 12 months time.
As the game kicked off between the French champions and Champions League holders PSG and Conference League winners Chelsea, Trump and Melania took to their seats.
They were seen eagerly watching on as Trump beamed with joy as Chelsea took an early lead through two Cole Palmer goals.
Melania and Don landed in New Jersey earlier in the day on Marine One.
They touched down at Teterboro Airport before getting a motorcade to the stadium.
Donald Trump Jr, his partner, and Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff were all also in attendance at the match.
Lone gunman Thomas Crooks, 20, unleashed a volley of shots at Trump in an attack that pierced the top of his ear and left him with blood smeared on his cheek.
The shocking events sparked the biggest security crisis the US had facedsince the shooting of Ronald Reagan in 1981.

A MAJOR warning has been issued for Irish drivers following a “serious” road crash in Co Donegal this afternoon.
The crash occurred on N56 at Derryfad, between Creeslough and Termo, Co Donegal on Sunday afternoon.
Gardai and emergency services rushed to the scene shortly after the alarms were raised.
The road is currently closed as emergency services remain at the scene.
Gardai said that diversions are in place as drivers urged to avoid the area if possible and “allow extra time” for their journey.
A Garda spokesperson added: “A road closure is in place due to a serious road traffic collision that occurred on the N56 at Derryfad (between Creeslough and Termon).”
The driver was sadly pronounced dead at the scene of the collision and the male passenger was taken to hospital to be treated for injuries believed to be non life-threatening at this time.
The collision took place on the Ballyhill Road in the Nutts Corner area.
The PSNI and the Northern Ireland Ambulance service rushed to the scene after receiving a report of a collision in the area at around 5:50pm.
The Ballyhill Road was closed for a short time as detectives examined the scene but has since reopened.
The PSNI said investigations into the collision are “ongoing” and urged anyone with information to come forward.
Roads Policing Inspector Cherith Adair, from the Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Our officers received and responded to a report of a collision involving a white VW Golf in the area at approximately 5.50pm.
“Colleagues from the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service also attended, however, the driver of the vehicle sadly died at the scene.
“A male passenger travelling in the vehicle was taken to hospital for treatment for his injuries, not believed to be life threatening at this time.
“The Ballyhill Road was closed while detectives conducted enquiries and has now re-opened.
“The investigation remains ongoing, and we would ask anyone with mobile phone or dash cam footage, or information which might assist, to get in touch.

TWELVE MONTHS since Jim McGuinness admitted that his side ‘ran out of steam’ in their bid to reach the All-Ireland SFC final, Donegal delivered the goods as they charged towards a first showpiece since 2014 like a freight train.
In the wake of their defeat to Galway at the same stage last summer, McGuinness lamented their failure to convert nine of 14 scoring opportunities in the second half.
McGuinness’ men ran out 3-26 to 0-15 winners
But having seen his team hit 3-13 after the change of ends at a packed Croke Park, there were no such complaints this time after they ruthlessly disposed of Meath’s attempt to take another major scalp.
The Royals have already tasted unlikely Championship victories over Dublin, Kerry and Galway this summer. Hopes of a first All-Ireland final appearance in 24 years were therefore high.
But Robbie Brennan’s superb first season at the helm was brought to an end in chastening fashion. Even at half-time, things looked ominous for Meath as they trailed by 0-13 to 0-8.
With a Sam Maguire decider against Kerry to come in a fortnight, Donegal could even afford to withdraw 35-year-old talisman Michael Murphy with 25 minutes still to play.
Murphy made way just moments after kicking his side into an eight-point lead. By then, the Ulster champions had also bagged the first of three second-half goals.
Donegal can now look forward to a first All-Ireland final appearance since the defeat to the Kingdom 11 years ago. McGuinness’ side played five games in 99 days to reach that stage then.
It has taken them twice as many outings in the same number of days to do it again.
Every facet of Donegal’s output was impressive here. Singling out just one of their awesome attackers would do a disservice to the others.
At the back, high standards were set by the colossal contributions of Brendan McCole and Finnbarr Roarty.
On a day when Paddy McBrearty came off the bench and kicked 0-3, McGuinness noted that the strength of his panel has been a key factor in taking Donegal a step further than in 2024.
He said: “We didn’t know at that stage the rule changes that were coming down the line and the physical demands of the rule changes, but certainly we knew that we needed people to come in and give us more depth and strengthen.
“We knew we had to be stronger and it would build its own energy within the group because it’d be more competitive and people want to play naturally, so I think we did see that today.
“We were able to make those changes the whole way through the game and going in to play Kerry in an All-Ireland final, you’re going to need every man that you’ve got.
“That’s a huge challenge and they’re so confident about what they do.
“There’s a rite of passage there almost in terms of winning All-Irelands, so that’s the first thing we’re going to have to meet head on.
“But certainly it’ll not be 15 players, it’ll be every single player that can get onto the pitch that’ll be needed.”
During their run to the last four, Meath have often thrived with the wind at their backs.
However, they lacked the accuracy required to take advantage of the strong breeze behind them as they attacked the Canal End in the first half.
From nine two-point efforts, only twice were orange flags raised. In total, the 16 shots they took before the interval yielded just six scores.
Their best goal chance also slipped away as Jordan Morris put too much purchase on a pass aimed at playing Matthew Costello through.
Brennan said: “It’s disappointing for the lads really because I’m absolutely convinced we’re better than that.
“What we left behind us in the first half didn’t give us enough of a platform then to even try and attack anything in the second half.
“With the rules the way they are and there’s so much space, if that momentum – that great buzzword now – goes against you, it’s very hard to wrestle it back.
“They’re so good at controlling the game, it’s nearly impossible.”
Donegal were flawless in front of the posts for almost the entirety of the first quarter. They nailed their first six attempts and did not register a miss until the 17th minute.
Yet they became similarly wasteful thereafter and ended the half with a tally of seven wides.
They also failed to find the net from the three goal opportunities that came their way in a five-minute spell just before the break.
Donal Keogan came to the rescue with a save for Meath when goalkeeper Billy Hogan was beaten by Conor O’Donnell.
A fine stop from Hogan then denied Hugh McFadden, before Murphy had to settle for a point as he was unable to keep his shot down with the goal at his mercy.
To a chorus of boos from Meath fans who were angered by a late challenge from Murphy on Seán Rafferty that went unpunished, the veteran Glenswilly kicked a brilliant two-point free into the wind early on.
The score put Donegal back in the ascendancy after the lead was very briefly seized by Meath for the only time in the game thanks to a two-pointer from Eoghan Frayne.
It was a dismal first half for Brennan’s side, who went 17 minutes without a score at one stage despite playing with the aid of the wind.
And they struggled badly on kickouts after Bryan Menton was forced off with an injury in the 20th minute.
The Meath boss said: “Bryan is an exceptional leader for us and all those things that you’d expect him to be.
“But one of his key things is that he’s so good at organising around that back line or the middle line for us.
“There’s no doubt he was a loss but you’re going to lose guys at this level and you have to be able to replace it again.”
When Donegal’s first goal eventually came in the 42nd minute, it was engineered by a Caolan McColgan. But the finish from Oisín Gallen was sublime.
The second was scored by Ciarán Moore, who expertly steered the ball beyond Hogan’s reach after being teed up by Ryan McHugh.
With 49 minutes on the clock, it was already the final nail in Meath’s coffin as Donegal held a 2-16 to 0-11 advantage.
Thanks to Frayne and Conor Duke, Meath ended the third quarter by posting back-to-back scores for the first time in the game. But they were blitzed again as Donegal outscored them by 1-9 to 0-2 until the finish.
O’Donnell finally got his goal in the 59th minute as the Carndonagh man coolly converted after the ball was squared by Gallen.
Brennan added: “I hope we’ve reawakened that drive and love for Meath football in the county because I think we’ve been crying out for it and today showed it. It was a complete sell-out, I think.
“But it’s important we take that now and keep building that towards the future. You’re not going to win every match, as we always know, but we can’t drop off now. We have to keep pushing.”
