The Spanish island with fewer tourists than Tenerife to get two new Jet2 flights next summer

IT WILL soon be easier for Brits to holiday on the island of La Palma.

Jet2.com and Jet2holidays will begin two new routes to one of the least visited Canary Island, La Palma, for next summer – and you can book now.

The airline will start new routes and introduce new holiday package from Manchester Airport on April 3, 2026 and are already bookable online.

The brand-new flying programme means two weekly services on Monday and Friday.

The second route is exclusive with no other airline flying from London Stansted to La Palma.

Jet2 will begin two weekly services with flights taking off on Mondays and Fridays which will begin on October 26, 2026.

CEO Steve Heapy said: “We are delighted to be expanding our presence across the Canary Islands from London Stansted and Manchester Airports by adding this brand-new gateway to our portfolio, appealing to holidaymakers looking to explore the island’s natural beauty.

He added: “After experiencing consistent demand from holidaymakers wanting to escape to the Canary Islands throughout the year, we are confident that these new flights and holidays will prove popular with customers.

“We are already looking forward to taking customers to La Palma for the first time on their well-deserved holidays from April 2026 and beyond.”

Jet2 now flies to five destinations across the Canary Islands, from 2026.

And Jet2holidays has also launched a range of hotels located across the island with a selection of 2-4 star accommodation available to book.

These are across stunning resorts like Los Cancajos, Puerto Naos and Tazacorte.

Prior to the 2021 volcanic eruption on La Palma, the island received around 250,000 visitors per year.

The numbers of holiday makers significantly decreased after that, but have slowly been rising.

In 2024, La Palma recorded 120,000 visitors to the island – a fraction of the seven million visiting Tenerife.

La Palma has dramatic cliffs, forests and beautiful beaches, which is why it is becoming popular with Brits.

The average temperature in La Palma, Canary Islands, typically ranges from 16C to 27C throughout the year making it a popular winter sun spot.

On the lesser-known place on island is the Caldera de Taburiente a volcanic crater almost five miles wide, created by an eruption three million years ago.

Santa Cruz de la Palma is the capital and port with cobbled streets, lined with 15th-century buildings with flower-filled balconies.

You can also do stargazing and visit the beaches which are not golden, but have volcanic black sands instead.

Bajamar is a long and wide beach in the capital, while Los Cancajos has calm waters and is a popular spot for families.

In the north is Charco Azul, a natural seawater pool enclosed by volcanic rocks and waterfalls.

Plus, one man who has visited 100 countries reveals why he always goes back to these Spanish islands.

Kym, 49, is currently enjoying a summer break with friends but turned up the heat when she indulged in the eye-popping mini photoshoot.

Ditching her bikini top altogether, Kym could be seen pulling her best sultry pose in the water on holiday.

The soon-to-be grandma of four could be seen facing a waterfall-like feature as she threw her head back and crouched seductively in the water.

The former Coronation Street actress added the caption: “Just casual, Fun in the sun!!”

As well as her nearly-naked photograph, Kym shared some images of her hanging out with her pals on the trip.

Kym and her friends were staying in a luxury villa which appeared to come complete with its own private pool.

The celebrations continued well into the night as Kym shared a snap of a slew of bottles of alcohol along with the caption: “Summer nights.”

Her much-needed trip away comes after it was confirmed that she had quit her role in BBC school-based drama, Waterloo Road.

Kym was revealed to have walked away from the role in the wake of her split from her toyboy boyfriend, Samuel Thomas.

The three-times married star was one of the BBC drama’s biggest signings but The Sun told this year how she had already recorded her final scenes.

A source said: “Kym is in a new chapter of her life.

“She’s heading towards 50 and wants to try as many new things as she can.

“One of the reasons she dumped Samuel was because she just wanted to have some fun and see where her work takes her.

“She’s already got a busy work and family life and is very much enjoying her freedom and being able to take on exciting new projects wherever they may take her.”

The former Coronation Street actress has moved into presenting over the last couple of years.

She is a regular on BBC’s Morning Live and has a travel show on Channel 5 with Richard Arnold.

I traded in my flat for a £26k caravan, everyone tells me I made a huge mistake but I’m laughing all the way to the bank

SINKING back into her plush sofa, Katrina flicks on her electric fire while she admires the gorgeous interiors of her dream home.

With her chic open plan living space complete with a stylish kitchen and coordinating sitting room you would be forgiven for thinking Katrina lives in a posh London flat.

Looking at the interior you would struggle to believe it was a caravan[/caption]

While she has a little less space than before she says she barely notices[/caption]

But the reality is that Katrina’s perfect pad is a static caravan.

Katrina, 31, ditched the rental market after years of dealing with poor living conditions and financial stress and says she has never been happier.

The business owner, who lives in the south of England, instead chose to invest £26,000 in a 2021 caravan – a move she calls the most freeing decision of her life.

But not everyone agrees and Katrina regularly has to deal with people calling her decision a “waste of money” on TikTok.

“Getting a mortgage just wasn’t on the cards,” Katrina says.

“I could have rented, but in my area, a basic one or two-bedroom flat is around £1,000 a month.

“With bills, you’re looking at closer to £1,700. I didn’t want to live just to pay bills.

“I value quality of life, and the caravan offered me a more affordable, freeing alternative.

“Honestly, I didn’t have many other options, and this one made the most sense.”

After viewing a series of “cold, mouldy and badly maintained” flats, Katrina was inspired by a friend living in a caravan park.

One visit later, and she knew she’d found her new home. She moved in March 2025 – and hasn’t looked back since.

Katrina says she’s making massive savings compared to before – spending £528 a month on ground rent, Wi-Fi, gas and electric.

“I know I made the right decision for me,” she says.

“I’d viewed a few flats that were, quite frankly, depressing. Cold, mouldy, and badly maintained.

“Then I visited a friend who lives on the park I’m now in, and I’d always loved where she was. It just clicked.

“I reached out to the park owner to see what was available, and that’s when I found my caravan.

“Everyone around me has been so supportive.

“Most people actually think it’s a brilliant idea and have even considered doing something similar.”

Trolls have told her that her caravan is a waste of money but she says it’s far from it[/caption]

However, Katrina says she’s faced some snide comments about her choice on her TikTok page, Katrinas Caravan.

She said: “On TikTok there’s been some negative comments, but it doesn’t phase me.

“Unless you’ve walked in someone else’s shoes, you can’t always understand their choices, and that’s okay.

“People who are quick to judge often have their own stuff to work through. I’m happy for them to form opinions.”

Living alone in the caravan, Katrina says she finally feels like she can breathe – both emotionally and financially.

Having disposable income is the best part. I hadn’t experienced that in years

Katrina

She’s even found an unexpected community.

She said: “Having disposable income is the best part. I hadn’t experienced that in years.

“I even managed to take a few days off work and just enjoy myself – something that used to feel impossible under financial pressure.

“My 90-year-old neighbour came round every day to check on me when I sprained my knee.

“That sort of kindness and connection wasn’t something I ever had in previous places I lived.”

Katrina says that hers is far from a stereotypical caravan.

She explains: “Once you’re inside, you’d never guess it was a caravan. I’m decorating room by room, adding my own touches.

“I live quite minimally, and the caravan has brilliant storage.

How much does it cost to live in a caravan?

LIVING in a caravan can be an economical and flexible lifestyle choice in the UK. Here's a breakdown of potential costs:

Initial Costs

  • Caravan Purchase: £8,000 – £40,000 (depending on size, age, and condition)
  • Caravan Insurance: £200 – £800 per year

Ongoing Monthly Costs

  • Pitch Fees: £150 – £600 (varies by location and facilities)
  • Utilities (Electricity, Gas, Water): £40 – £120
  • Maintenance and Repairs: £20 – £80
  • Internet and TV: £20 – £50
  • Gas for Heating/Cooking: £15 – £40

Other Potential Costs

  • Waste Disposal Fees: £8 – £25
  • Transport Costs (if moving locations): Variable, depending on distance
  • Optional Add-ons (Awning, Solar Panels, etc.): £400 – £1,600 (one-time)

Sample Monthly Budget

  • Pitch Fees: £400
  • Utilities: £80
  • Maintenance and Repairs: £40
  • Internet and TV: £40
  • Gas for Heating/Cooking: £25
  • Total: £585

Annual Estimated Cost

  • Total Monthly Costs: £585 x 12 = £7,020
  • Insurance: £500
  • Maintenance and Repairs: £480
  • Total Annual Cost: £8,000

Tips to Save

  • Off-Peak Pitch Fees: Look for lower rates during off-peak seasons.
  • DIY Maintenance: Handle minor repairs yourself.
  • Energy Efficiency: Invest in solar panels to reduce utility costs.

While initial setup costs can be significant, ongoing expenses for living in a caravan can be relatively low, making it a viable option for those seeking an affordable and mobile lifestyle in the UK.

“Everything has its place. I’m not tripping over anything, and it actually feels spacious and calm.

“Everyone seems to want to come to mine now because they love it so much. They call it a cosy sanctuary.”

However, there are some downsides, like not having a washing machine or anywhere to dry clothes.

Katrina adds: “Things like cooking are no different than when I was in a flat, except I might have to be a bit smarter with space.

“I’ve got a lovely walk-in shower in my bathroom, so no complaints there.

I’ve gained other luxuries – peaceful surroundings, a slower pace of life, and access to lovely leisure facilities.

Katrina

“Laundry is a bit more of a juggle – I either use the on-site laundry or drop a bag to my sister when I see her.

“Drying clothes was a bit annoying, so I bought a clothes line for outside.

“I’m also looking to get an outdoor washing machine too.”

Despite a few minor headaches, Katrina says that she can’t imagine herself going back to bricks and mortar.

“Never say never, but I doubt I’d ever go back to renting,” she says.

“Even if I don’t live in a caravan forever, I think I’ll always want to live a little differently. Maybe a lodge or even something off-grid that I build myself

“I’ve gained other luxuries – peaceful surroundings, a slower pace of life, and access to lovely leisure facilities. It’s been a trade-up, not a sacrifice.”

Iconic blue screen of death is killed off after 40 YEARS – Microsoft reveals new sign your computer is broken

THE blue screen of death is disappearing from computer screens after 40 years of filling people with dread.

Microsoft is set to replace the iconic slate that no one wants to see later this summer.

Instead users will see a simple black screen[/caption]

In a bittersweet announcement, the tech giant said it is “streamlining the unexpected restart experience”.

“This change is part of a larger continued effort to reduce disruption in the event of an unexpected restart,” David Weston, Microsoft’s Vice President of Enterprise and OS Security revealed.

A part of that is slashing the downtime during the worrying unexpected restart to about two seconds for most people.

The blue screen of death will be replaced by a simpler black screen of death instead.

There’s also no longer a frowning face or a QR code.

It’ll start to appear on Windows 11 machines running version 24H2.

Despite being a symbol of doom, users on social media said the change marks the “end of an era”.

“The Blue Screen of Death is dying for one last time and Windows crashes just won’t be the same ever again!” one person wrote on X.

“One of the most unnecessary changes ever – and that says a lot when it’s Windows 11 we’re talking about,” another commented.

“But… I was literally just getting used to it,” a third joked.

The overhaul comes amid a slew of improvements to deal with technical crashes following the crippling global IT meltdown last year.

Organisations across the globe were severely affected by a botched up security update from IT firm CrowdStrike which caused havoc for banks, hospitals and airlines.

Lifeguard, 18, impaled by beach umbrella recalls horror and reveals pole missed artery by a centimeter in freak accident

A LIFEGUARD impaled by a beach umbrella has recalled she was lucky to survive following the freak accident.

Alex, a college student, revealed the umbrella’s pole missed her artery by just one centimeter as she spoke about the horror.

Alex, a teen lifeguard, was impaled when trying to tie an umbrella to a stand[/caption]

She was trying to tie the umbrella to a stand on the beach in Asbury Park, New Jersey, but encountered problems, as reported by the ABC affiliate WABC-TV.

Alex wanted to protect herself from the heat as temperatures hovered around 95F on Wednesday.

But, the rope she was using to tie the umbrella to the stand was frayed.

But, the umbrella was then picked up by a gust of wind.

Alex revealed that she tried to catch the umbrella but ended up landing on the pole.

The pole went through her shoulder and her back.

The 18-year-old admitted her brain was “heavy” after realizing what had happened.

“I was like ‘oh my gosh, I’ve been impaled,” she told WABC-TV.

She admitted that she was fortunate her injuries weren’t more serious.

“I was very lucky where it hit me because it missed every major blood vessel and it just went through my muscles,” she said.

“The pole was very close to major blood vessels,” the teen told the CBS affiliate WCBS-TV.

“It was a half a centimeter away from at least one major blood vessel.

“It could’ve been so much worse, actually.”

Alex revealed that a band saw was used to get parts of the six-foot-long pole from out of her armpit.

The pole had to be cut before the girl was taken to the hospital

Beachgoers were left stunned by what had happened.

“As a mother of teenagers, it’s so shocking and scary,” Nancy Brillo told WABC-TV.

Her injuries means she won’t be able to return to lifeguarding duties for around six weeks.

She had just finished her first year at the University of Wisconsin.

But, Alex hasn’t been put off returning to the beach despite the accident.

Serial murderer ‘The Twitter Killer’ who dismembered 9 victims he snared on social media is executed by hanging in Japan

JAPAN has executed the man who brutally murdered eight women and one man – aged between 15 and 26 – after luring them to his flat.

Takahiro Shiraishi, dubbed the “Twitter killer”, raped, strangled and dismembered his victims – in a chilling case that shook one of the world’s safest countries.

Japan’s Minister of Justice Keisuke Suzuki announced on Friday that Shiraishi had been executed[/caption]

Shiraishi, who committed the crimes in 2017, was executed by hanging – marking Japan’s first execution since 2022.

Then 27, the serial killer lured young women to his home, where he raped them before murdering them.

Three of the eight women were schoolgirls.

He also killed the boyfriend of one of the women to silence him.

Authorities made the disturbing discovery in October 2017 while investigating the disappearance of a 23-year-old woman last seen walking with Shiraishi.

Cops found the victims’ body parts in Shiraishi’s flat in the Japanese city of Zama, near Tokyo.

One resident told The Japan Times: “I thought it smelled like sewage. It was something I never smelled before.”

Another neighbour said they noticed a “nasty smell” coming from the flat.

Nine dismembered bodies were found in three coolers and five large storage boxes when cops visited his flat – dubbed the “house of horrors” by the media.

The serial killer had discarded parts of his victims in the bin, which was collected with the recycled garbage.

It later emerged that he had searched online for how to mutilate bodies before buying a saw and a meat cleaver.

Shiraishi pleaded guilty to murdering nine victims in October 2020.

He revealed that he met them on the social media platform Twitter, now known as X.

He told them he could help them die, even claiming in some cases he would kill himself alongside them.

His Twitter profile wrote: “I want to help people who are really in pain. Please DM [direct message] me anytime.”

Prosecutors demanded the death penalty for Shiraishi, while his lawyers argued for a prison sentence, claiming his suicidal victims had consented to their deaths and that he should be charged with “murder with consent”.

They also called for his mental state to be assessed.

But Shiraishi later disputed his own defence team’s version of events, revealing he killed without the victims’ consent.

435 people showed up to watch the 2020 verdict sentencing him to death – despite the court having only 16 public seats – Japan’s public broadcaster NHK reported.

The murders also prompted Twitter to change its rules to state users should not “promote or encourage suicide or self-harm”.

Shiraishi was hanged at the Tokyo Detention House in secrecy, with nothing revealed until the execution was done.

Japan’s Justice Minister Keisuke Suzuki, who ordered Shiraishi’s execution, said on Friday that Shiraishi acted “for the genuinely selfish reason of satisfying his own sexual and financial desires”, according to AFP.

The case “caused great shock and anxiety to society”, he said.

Japan currently has 105 people on death row, Suzuki added.

The country has one of the lowest crime rates in the world.

What is Japan's death penalty?

JAPAN'S justice system allows the death penalty for serious crimes like murder, typically carried out by hanging.

The nation’s death penalty dates back to the Meiji era – with the current legal framework established under the Penal Code of 1907.

Executions are rare and usually follow a lengthy appeals process.

The justice minister must sign the execution order.

Inmates are often told just hours before, and the executions are carried out in total secrecy.

Between January 2000 and June 2025, 99 inmates have been executed in Japan.

Who has recently been executed?

July 2022: Tomohiro Kato, 39, was executed for a rampage in a Tokyo shopping district in 2018, where he killed seven people in a car crash and stabbing spree.

December 2021: Yasutaka Fujishiro, 65, was executed for killing seven relatives in 2004.

December 2021: Tomoaki Takanezawa, 54, and Mitsunori Onogawa, 44, were executed for the 2003 murders of two employees at separate pachinko parlours.

August 2019: Koichi Shoji, 64, was executed for multiple rape-murders in Kanagawa Prefecture in 2001.

August 2019: Yasunori  Suzuki, 50, was executed for murdering three women – and raping one of them – in Fukuoka Prefecture between 2004 and 2005.

‘Possibly dangerous’ Spain weather warning for Irish tourists as 42C heatwave blasts & worst-hit spots pinpointed

IRISH holidaymakers have been hit with a major warning as a popular destination is set to scorch this week.

Spain has seen a number of weather alerts this week, with temperatures “likely” to reach 42C in some parts of the country.

Spain will see temperatures as high as 42C in the coming days[/caption]

AEMET
Irish holidaymakers are advised to check the latest weather information before they travel[/caption]

Irish travellers to the area are likely to see their holidays ruined in the scorching heat.

And many people will likely end up spending most of their holiday inside to escape the blazing temperatures.

AEMET, the country’s meteorology department, has several warnings in place for the heat.

Andalusia is set to be most affected by the blazing temperatures.

A Status Orange alert, which warns normal activities are “possibly dangerous”, is in place for Córdoba, Jaén and Seville due to forecasted highs of 40C.

AEMET confirmed the heatwave is set to begin tomorrow and will last for four days, until next Tuesday, July 1.

The weather bosses said: “A large anticyclone coming from the African continent will extend to cover our territory in the coming days.

“This will result in a situation of high stability, with predominantly dull skies and winds in general, which, together with the high level of sunshine at this time of year, will give rise to a progressive thermal rise in the coming days.

“As a consequence, very high and persistent thermal values are expected, both daytime and night time, which could pose a risk for exposed and vulnerable people.”

Temperatures are expected to exceed 38C from tomorrow and could potentially reach 40C to 42C.

The forecaster added: “The most probable scenario indicates the entry of a cooler and more humid Atlantic mass into the northwestern peninsular from July 1, initiating a thermal decline that would extend through the rest of the northern part in the following days.

“However, it is likely that very high temperatures will continue in the western quarter, exceeding 38-40C.

“The Canary Islands will also be affected by the Saharan air mass in its eastern part, with a rise in temperatures on Saturday.

“The worst affected areas will be medians and slopes oriented towards the south of Gran Canaria, and Lanzarote, where 34-36C can be reached on Saturday.”

KEEPING SAFE IN HOT WEATHER

ALTHOUGH many people enjoy warm weather, heatwaves can cause heat exhaustion and heatstroke in the elderly, young children, and other vulnerable groups.

The HSE has issued advice for people who are experiencing very hot weather.

And the health bosses stressed the importance of staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water to ensure you do not experience dehydration.

When inside, the HSE advised:

  • Turn off lights and appliances not in use as they generate heat
  • Close windows that face the sun during the day, and open them at night when the temperature drops
  • Close curtains in rooms that get morning or afternoon sun
  • Sprinkle water over your skin, or keep a damp cloth on the back of your neck
  • Use an electric fan (but only if temperature is below 35C)

When outside:

  • Avoid going out during the hottest part of the day if possible (11am to 3pm)
  • Wear light and loose-fitting clothing that covers your skin
  • Wear a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses
  • Regularly apply a broad-spectrum (UVA and UVB) water-resistant sunscreen to skin that is not covered
  • Stay in the shade

The advice from the Department of Foreign Affairs for Irish citizens is to make sure you’re monitoring the conditions before you jet off.

On the DFA website, they warn: “Spain can at times experience extreme weather conditions, including flooding, which can adversely affect travel plans.

“Spain can at times experience extreme weather conditions, including flooding, which can adversely affect travel plans.

“You can monitor information and alerts, including severe weather warnings, on the website of the Spanish Meteorological Agency, AEMET.

“Citizens are advised to check the latest weather information before they travel and to follow the advice of the local authorities.”

Tragic update into death of Brit, 23, ‘shot in chest’ at dad’s US home as her mum reveals ‘killer’ will not face justice

THE mum of a Brit woman shot dead at her dad’s home in the US has revealed her fury after discovering her alleged killer will not face justice.

Lucy Harrison, 23, was discovered at the property in the Prosper area of Texas on January 10.

Criminal charges will not be brought

At the time, authorities in the US confirmed she died after being shot in the chest by “another person”.

Officials revealed a suspect had been identified and that the case was being probed as “criminally negligent homicide”.

But Collin County District Attorney’s Office has confirmed that a Grand Jury has issued a ‘no-bill’ in the case – meaning criminal charges will not be brought.

Lucy’s mum Jane Coates has now hit out at the “baffling” decision and said it was “beyond comprehension”.

She said the Grand Jury found the evidence did not meet the threshold for criminal proceedings.

Jane, from Warrington, Cheshire, added: “”Although we have tried so hard to prepare for this moment, it is a brutal outcome to accept.

“It is baffling and beyond comprehension to us, our families and friends, that there is to be no accountability for what happened to my daughter.

“The international element, coupled with a different legal system, practice, and thresholds, makes the outcome even harder and more frustrating to accept.

“The outpouring of love for Lucy, myself, Sam, and our families and friends, from our local community and beyond, has been overwhelming, and I cannot thank everyone enough for their ongoing support.”

Unlike Britain, in the US a Grand Jury of citizens meets to review evidence and decide whether to bring a prosecution.

The hearings are conducted in secret, so details of who could have been charged have not been released.

It previously emerged from a police report that five witnesses had been identified – including two children.

Paying tribute, Jane said: “When the time is right, I would welcome learning more from communities and groups in Texas who are working to prevent gun deaths through education, partnerships, and policy change.

“I know that Lucy would be a fierce advocate of this.

“I miss her infectious belly laughs, her constant chatter about her dream job at Boohoo in Manchester, her requests to tickle her legs, travel plans, her tears – and there were many!

“Most of all, as her mum, I miss spending time with the absolute light of my life. It was, and still is, a privilege to be her mum.

“In the words of her final Mother’s Day card to me, I’ll ‘keep mumming it’.”

An inquest in Cheshire heard how Lucy was “on holiday in the USA when she was fatally shot with a firearm”.

Just hours before the horror, Lucy could be seen posing happily in the snow with her family in touching last photos.

Wearing a thick black coat, the graduate beamed next to her dad, younger siblings and stepmum.

Lucy also grinned alongside her boyfriend, who she had flown to the US with just after Christmas to visit her family.

The couple, who had just bought a house together, had been planning to fly back to Manchester the day after Lucy was discovered dead.

Sam said: “Due to the legal proceedings over in America, Lucy’s voice has been silenced, leaving myself and Jane completely heartbroken.

“This outcome has left us baffled, heartbroken, and it has been incredibly frustrating to understand the thresholds and legal system in Texas.

“Our whole life was planned out, and we began that first step by buying our own home.

“I was one of the very fortunate ones who met ‘their person’ at a very young age, and I will be forever grateful to experience that, even for just one minute.”

The family have requested that, if desired, donations be made to Peace and Mind UK – a charity based in Lucy’s hometown founded in memory of murdered teenager Brianna Ghey.
