AFTER knocking the All-Ireland champions out of the Sam Maguire race, Jack O’Connor unloaded on the critics who have been knocking his Kerry side.
There were shades of the 2009 trouncing of Pat Gilroy’s Dublin as O’Connor’s crew were untouchable during a sensational second-half spell that saw them hit Armagh for 0-14 without reply.
His side ran out 0-32 to 1-21 winners on the back of a blistering second half displayThey scored 14 points in a row between the 40th and 55th minute
And O’Connor vented: “What’s to be gained by slating people? It’s the easiest thing in the world. I’m in the business of building people, not knocking people.
“I’d ask people who are knocking that group and knocking people involved with the group to look in the mirror and say, ‘What have you contributed?’
“It’s very easy to knock people. Go away and coach a team. Go away and coach a development squad. Go away and coach a minor team. That’s how you help Kerry football, not knocking people.”
A group-stage defeat to Meath raised major doubts over the All-Ireland aspirations of the Munster champions.
The nine-point loss caused Darragh Ó Sé to claim that ‘the mood isn’t great’ in the county as the former Kerry midfielder tipped Armagh to bring an end to their season.
O’Connor said: “We think we have a lot of good footballers but sometimes we’re being judged on different criteria to other teams.
“For example, Dublin got beaten by Meath in the Leinster Championship and I didn’t see any ex-Dublin players coming out slating the team or slating the management like we had down south in our county.
“There’s a sense of commitment to the team and a sense of loyalty to the team. Unfortunately a few pundits down our way let themselves down in that regard.”
The Kerry cohort in the 70,530 attendance revelled in seeing their team turn a five-point deficit into a nine-point lead during a blistering 15-minute spell.
O’Connor beamed: “A big performance and a big Kerry support came up and backed the team, which is great. We love seeing that because a lot of people had us written off during the week.
“But obviously the supporters felt there was another kick in the team. They’ve seen it happen before.
“They saw it happen in 2006, they saw it happen in 2009. Kerry is a proud county and we weren’t going to fizzle out of the Championship without a hell of a fight.”
O’Connor admitted parallels could be drawn with the same stage of the campaign 16 years ago that concluded with him leading Kerry to an All-Ireland SFC title for the third time.
Expectations were low ahead of a quarter-final against Dublin after Kerry limped past Sligo and Antrim in the qualifiers, having been well beaten by Cork in a Munster semi-final.
But Dubs boss Gilroy famously branded his team ‘startled earwigs’ after they suffered a 17-point hammering.
‘FEROCIOUS DETERMINATION’
O’Connor said: “There was ferocious determination in the camp that we weren’t going to let the season fizzle out after the Meath game.
“It may have been difficult for Armagh not to listen to the outside noise where we were being written off and they were being written up.”
Meanwhile, Armagh boss Kieran McGeeney admitted ‘it’s hard to know’ what the future holds after he was asked about the prospect of staying on for a 12th season.
He said: “It’s all about the players first and foremost – what they want and how much they want to push on. My appetite for football has always been the same. I love it. I enjoy it, despite the abuse.
“It’s just one of those things. I don’t know. Maybe it’s an addiction. I haven’t even thought about that.”

LINE judges will be absent from Wimbledon today for the first time in the tournament’s 148-year history — after being booted out by AI.
Around 300 of the blazer-wearing officials who call “out” and “fault” have been axed in favour of an electronic gizmo.
Line judges will be absent from Wimbledon for the first time in the tournament’s 148-year historyAFP
Replacing them is the Hawk-Eye Challenge System which uses high-speed cameras and algorithms to track ball trajectory with pinpoint accuracy.
Voices used by the tech are from people working behind-the-scenes at Wimbledon, including tour guides.
The decision to adopt AI was made after a pilot at last year’s tournament.
It is understood the All England Club was reluctant, but the tech has been used in other events for years.
Chair umpires will remain.
Sally Bolton, chief executive of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, said AI will ensure “maximum accuracy” in officiating.
British No 4 Billy Harris, 30, said: “I’m sure the umpires will be missed.
“It feels like a quieter court when they’re not there, and they are all dressed up nice in the suits.
“But if the line calls are more accurate I guess most of the players are not going to be complaining.”
Former line judges had to compete for 80 new match assistant roles, which can involve measuring the net, opening tubes of new balls and escorting players to the toilet.
Veteran linesman Charles Falconer, 77, who would have been awarded a trophy and certificate to mark his 50th year this summer, reportedly missed out.
One judge said: “Charlie even asked if he could do stewarding to make the milestone, but the tournament told him there was nothing available.
“I thought Wimbledon were better than that.”
A total of 23 Brits are in the singles events at this year’s tournament — the most since 1984.
QUEUE CANNOT BE SERIOUS
TENNIS-mad fans pitched tents and sofas overnight to be the first through the gates of Wimbledon this morning.
Some 1,400 eager supporters braved searing heat and crammed into nearby Wimbledon Park.
Tournament bosses have even issued a dossier on how to queue correctly.
The guide warns against smoking, cooking on barbecues and toilet breaks of more than half an hour.
Among those queuing last night was Quin Latimore, 29, who said: “It’s filling up fast.
“I have been doing this for quite a few years and have never seen it this busy.”

POP singer Kate Nash has taken a swipe at Denise Welch while performing at Glastonbury.
The star, 37, headlined the Left Field tent at the festival and launched into a foul-mouthed tirade at various people including JK Rowling, Rod Stewart – and surprisingly the Loose Women favourite.

AlamyMatty Healy’s band The 1975 headlined Glasto on Friday night[/caption]
Kate ranted: “The music industry doesn’t know what to do with me. They tried to get rid of me, but they didn’t. There is a record executive sweating their t*** off with Matt Healy‘s mum.
‘They’re scared of me. I like that. But I was made of mother f****** bricks. But they didn’t believe me. I even gave them a second warning a few years later when I told them ‘Do not underestimate the girl’. Is it my fault they didn’t believe me?
“I’m not going to give my third warning. It’s too late for that. I’m taking my bricks and I’m throwing them through the f****** window.”
Denise was at Glastonbury this weekend to support her son Matt Healy who was headlining with his band The 1975.
Matt meanwhile preached love to fans during the band’s set on the Pyramid Stage.
Pausing between songs to address the crowd on Friday night, he said: “The lack of politics in this show, it is a conscious decision.
“We don’t want our legacy to be one of politics – we want it to be that of love and friendship.
“You go out into the world and there is loads of politics. We don’t need more, we need more love and friendship.
“If you are a young kid and inspired about this band, aspire for friendship and love in what you do and you will never fail – and I love you.”
She said the extra money meant she wouldn’t have to compromise on things like staff wages and safe tour buses that aren’t overcrowded.
Kate said she was determined to put on a “high quality show for fans” and said of her money-making campaign: “I’ve got a great bum.
“I often flash a bit anyway so it was a fun idea, but I didn’t think it would get this much of a reaction.”

Kate split from her label and self-released her third and fourth records, the latter being called Yesterday Was Forever in 2018.
She previously revealed she found herself in financial difficulty.
The Brit School alum told The Guardian of the dip in her success after Foundations and said: “I’d trusted the wrong people with my money, which meant I had to sell my flat and move back in with my parents.
“I’d worked so hard and had nothing to show for it. The worst part was that I knew I wasn’t going to give up.
“I briefly thought I should become a teacher instead, but then I realised: ‘How are you going to do that? You don’t even have a degree because you didn’t get into any universities.’
“Having this career is about fighting your way through it.”

ELLA TOONE kept England on song as they ruthlessly crushed Jamaica’s attempt to spoil their Euros-send-off party at the King Power Stadium.
The midfielder’s double helped the hosts forget a minor set-piece wobble that almost had them caught cold on Sunday afternoon.
England thrashed Jamaica 7-0 in their final warm-up game before the Women’s EurosElla Toone fired England into a 3-0 lead
Home fans were left a stunned after seeing the Lionesses’ early lead seemingly wiped out just nine minutes after Toone broke the deadlock.
A combination of Jamaica’s smart low delivery from a corner, and the ball squirming under goalkeeper Hannah Hampton, saw the scoreline momentarily level at 1-1.
But after that equaliser was chalked off by VAR, Jamaica rarely troubled England, who were 3-0 up at half-time thanks to a Lucy Bronze header and Toone’s second.
And they were boosted by Lauren James’ return to Lioness action – and her first match since April – following her recovery from a hamstring injury.
However England will be eager to avoid getting caught out by set-piece trickery during their run at this year’s Euros with far tougher opponents awaiting them in the tournament.
In just five days’ time in Switzerland, Sarina Wiegman‘s side kick-off the difficult challenge of attempting to win the contest they triumphed in back in 2022.
The Lionesses are in a group of death with France first up for them in Zurich, followed by Holland and Euros debutants Wales.
At various points this year Wiegman spoke of the need for her team to find consistency with results in the Nations League being a little mixed.
CASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS
At home England have impressed with convincing wins against Portugal, Belgium and Spain.
But away the team have looked a little less consistent with losses to the latter two sides and a draw with Portugal.
While Wiegman has seven players making their major tournament debuts at the Euros, the coach stuck with much of the XI that slipped to a 2-1 loss to Spain in May.
The only difference was Jess Carter starting at left-back in place of Niamh Charles and Toone starting as No10 with Jess Park on the bench.
Both players laid down markers in this game with Carter impressing with her drives into the box and an assist for Toone.
The Man United vice-captain broke the deadlock just 10 minutes into the game thumping in a shot from distance with Jamaica initially pinned back.
And Jamaica thought they had bagged a leveller with Kayla McKenna’s coolly swept finish only for the goal to be disallowed after Amelia Van Santen was caught offside.
Bronze doubled England’s lead with a cushioned header after Carter’s smart cross into the box before Toone added a third with a left-footed strike before half-time.
And there was no let up in the second half with Georgia Stanway blasting the ball for a 4-0 lead in the 59th minute before Alessia Russo made it 5-0
Sub Aggie Beever-Jones added England’s sixth before the hosts suffered a momentary fitness scare with Beth Mead requiring treatment on her knee.
But the forward bounced back from that minor concern to slot in in England’s seventh with Jamaica drubbed without Manchester City star Khadija Shaw.

TRAVEL chaos has erupted in a Turkish holiday hotspot after raging wildfires blazed across the region and sparked mass evacuations.
The terrifying inferno ripped through the tourist resort of Foça, İzmir, before it was fanned by strong winds and tore through neighbourhoods.

GettyThe extinguishing operation involved firefighter on land and in air[/caption]
Chilling images showed the extent of the fires which ravaged local communities and engulfed forests in flames.
Planes were seen dumping large supplies of water over fiery infernos in order to combat the blazing fireballs.
And local residents watched in horror as their homes were torched up and forestry continued to burn.
Aftermath photos showed scorched cars and buildings while firefighters worked desperately to fight the flames.
Flights have now been suspended at İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport following the raging wildfires.
Ongoing extinguishing efforts prevented jets from taking off or landing at the airport as of 4pm local time.
Flights scheduled to land at İzmir were reportedly diverted amid the travel mayhem.
And hundreds have been left stranded following the major disruption.
Brave firefighters spent 22 gruelling hours fighting the vicious blaze across İzmir.
The lengthy operation reportedly involved 625 personnel, six helicopters, 46 fire engines, 9 bulldozers, and 13 water supply vehicles.
Hundreds were evacuated form their houses – with 550 residents forced out of some 175 homes in Ilıpınar, Foça.
Four firefighters were also affected by smoke poisoning, two of whom were hospitalised.
The exact cause of the fire is currently unknown.
But preliminary findings suggest the inferno may have been caused by a high-voltage power line.
The governor of the province, Süleyman Elban, cautioned the population to exercise extreme caution in the next few days.
He said low humidity and high temperatures would aggravate the risk of more fires.

The governor said: “We expect the next four or five days to be very hot, with strong winds and low humidity. These conditions are perfect for a fire.
“Everyone’s life is at stake. We must all be extremely cautious.”
Wildfires were also reported in Sakarya, Bilecik, and Manisa this week.
Environment Minister Murat Kurum said in Bilecik, 23 houses and 47 units in 3 villages were destroyed in the forest fires, whilst 41 houses and 25 barns and warehouses were severely damaged.
Minister of Agriculture and Forestry İbrahim Yumaklı, said: “Nine major fires broke out in İzmir, Denizli, Aydın and Manisa.
“The fire in Manisa started again due to wind.
“Four villages and two neighbourhoods were evacuated due to the fire.”

A JUDGE accused a mum of deliberately getting pregnant in a bid to avoid jail after smuggling drugs into her husband’s prison.

The mum-of-four helped her husband David Bradley smuggle them in while he was in jail himself.
The couple, from Coventry, appeared at Birmingham Crown Court and were previously warned they likely faced being jailed straight after.
Cathlyn Orchard, defending 36-year-old Parker, revealed to the court that she was between six to seven weeks pregnant.
Astonished Judge Dean Kershaw replied: “Are you seriously telling me that? Knowing the position these two are in, she’s pregnant again?
“She understands there’s something called contraception, having a child knowing the position both of them are in,” BirminghamLive reported.
The barrister said: “I haven’t gone into that detail. She is not wanting to be pregnant and she is conflicted in saying that because she is going to keep the child. It couldn’t have come at a worse time.”
Judge Kershaw responded: “It all smacks to me it is another thing she is mentioning to avoid custody.
“It maybe regrettable but let’s apply common sense.”
However the judge decided not to jail Parker.
Having admitted two offences of conspiring to convey prohibited articles into prison she was sentenced to an 18-month community order with 100 hours of unpaid work and 30 days of rehabilitation activity.
Judge Kershaw said Bradley, aged 34, had abused his partner’s loyalty.
Bradley, who admitted the same two offences as his wife as well as a charge relating to having a phone in prison, was sentenced to 24 months suspended for 18 months.
He was ordered to carry out 160 hours of unpaid work and 30 days of rehabilitation activity.

GLASTONBURY, ENGLAND – JUNE 28: Danny O’Donoghue of the Script performs during day four of Glastonbury festival 2025 at Worthy Farm, Pilton on June 28, 2025 in Glastonbury, England. Established by Michael Eavis in 1970, Glastonbury has grown into the UK’s largest music festival, drawing over 200,000 fans to enjoy performances across more than 100 stages. In 2026, the festival will take a fallow year, a planned pause to allow the Worthy Farm site time to rest and recover. (Photo by Shane Anthony Sinclair/Getty Images)
THE SCRIPT played all their hits when they returned to Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage for the first time in 16 years – but they almost didn’t make it at all.
Sitting down with Bizarre before their set on Saturday, frontman Danny O’Donoghue admitted he’d been on a speedboat ride in Cardiff the day before, which left him battered and bruised.

He explained: “It was kick-ass.
“For about two hours, I think they were trying their best to get us to crash and not show up to Glastonbury.
“My knees are in bits.
“He was trying to do doughnuts and then coming back out.
“We left the sea more than twice.
“We went right up and bang, smashed down.”
Danny, who paid an emotional tribute on stage to their late bandmate Mark Sheehan, celebrated afterwards into the early hours.
But ahead of the performance, he said: “I thought I’d be a bit more nervous.
“Glastonbury is like Woodstock.
“The first time, I remember feeling too small for the stage.
“The stage was huge.

“Now, coming back, the stage looks quite small.
“But that’s what 17 years of touring will do for you.”
But their focus is on a follow-up to 2024’s album Satellites. Danny said: “We’re doing a show in August then heading to the States to work with the writers from The Man Who Can’t Be Moved and Hall of Fame and pretty much everything we’ve written.”
There was a five-year gap between their last two albums but I don’t think we’ll have such a wait this time around.
CHARLI’S ON FIRE
CHARLI XCX delivered one of The Other Stage’s best headline shows on Saturday.
Dressed in tiny black shorts, a matching bra and leather boots, the singer smashed her way through her Brat album, as well as having a cheeky glass of wine during the 75-minute set.

She later declared her love for fiancée George Daniels, The 1975’s drummer, and praised Block9 as the “best place” on Worthy Farm.
The area, which includes gay club NYC Downlow, has been the place to party for everyone from Zoe Ball to Matt Smith.

SIR ROD’S A LEGEND

SIR ROD STEWART lived up to his legends billing by overcoming a bout of flu and delivering an awesome set on Sunday afternoon.
Rod worked his way through hit after hit after cutting his current 28-song tour list down by eight.
He was desperate to fit in as many tracks as possible and made every break sparse when speaking to the crowd and made it clear he was just there to give his fans what they wanted — with shouts of “next” every time he wanted to hurry the set along.
By eleventh song Young Hearts the 200,000-plus crowd at the Pyramid Stage were on song, with Rod’s first ten tracks appearing to be relatively easy work vocally given how ill he was just seven days ago.
His energy levels were high, with the British superstar gyrating and dancing around the extensive stage with ease.
Those who’ve not been lucky enough to catch him on tour yet got to taste the full force of his band – with his brilliant saxophonist stealing the show alongside Rod’s six brilliant female singers and string players.
The affection and appreciation for Rod feels for his band spilled into my exclusive chat ahead of his set and on stage he made sure this set was just as much theirs as it was his.
A quick change into a bright pink suit after If You Want My Body and Rod was ready to go – launching into I Don’t Want To Talk About It before inviting my favourite Mick Hucknall on stage to sing If You Don’t Know Me By Now before Ronnie Wood came on for Faces hit Stay With Me.
Lulu then joined them for Hot Legs – with her saying as she walked off stage: “Rod Stewart’s the man.”
Too right he is.
During his closing song Sailing, Worthy Farm was swaying in near perfect timing – with many a tad out of rhythm thanks to the soaring heat and booze.
Rod however was on song and after taking one final bow on that hallowed stage, turning his back to show his custom-made Celtic shirt, he bid the crowd farewell.
They don’t make many like Rod. And that felt incredibly special.
DOECHII STARS IN STRIPES

DOECHII’s set will live long in the memory and not just for her pin-striped knee-high socks, slip of a kilt and tiny bra top.
The rapper’s West Holts session on Saturday served as an introduction to all the fans who have found her this year, thanks to hits Anxiety and Denial Is A River.
The US star peppered her set with snippets of the Wu-Tang Clan, Nas, Missy Elliott and even Daft Punk.
RITA ORA led the stars partying into the early hours in Block 9 – the festival’s wild, immersive nightlife district – with husband Taika Waititi.
The pair had plenty of energy after being driven around all day in an air conditioned four-by-four.
The Hot Right Now singer was seen dancing and mingling with stars including actor Taron Egerton.
Not so lucky, Jack Whitehall got separated from his pals and was told there was “no more room” in the VIP bar they were in.
Tilda Swinton was in VIP the bar with Maisie Smith – who must have been boiling in a massive faux-fur coat, while Lily Allen was overheard telling a pal: “I feel so great, it’s just this feeling.”
Same, Lily. Same.
James Norton was spotted in hospitality camping with bare feetSupplied
JAMES NORTON fans were shocked to see him stomping through hospitality camping with bare feet on Sunday morning.
My mole told me: “He was carrying his shoes and seemed in a hurry to get back from the toilets to his tent.
“People were doing double takes – and no one could work out why he’d taken his trainers off.”
Maybe he’s doing a Chris Martin, who is known for going barefoot because he likes to feel “grounded”.
CRUZ BECKHAM was living his best life – after renting out a posh Winnebago for himself and girlfriend Jackie Apostel.
An onlooker said: “While most people are stuck in stuffy tents, Cruz had a far fancier stay and was in one of the Winnies.
“The bigger ones cost almost £40,000 to rent.
“He spent Saturday enjoying some of the music acts with Jackie and stayed out of the VIP areas to hang out with the crowds.”

SEAN O’Shea made it clear Kerry’s panel drew motivation from how they were largely “written off” ahead of upsetting Armagh.
The Kingdom showed 2025 may see them rule Gaelic football once again with a statement performance while dumping the All-Ireland champions out at the quarter-final stage.
@TheSundayGameThe 26-year-old was the driving force throughout as they ground Armagh down[/caption]
@TheSundayGameLee Keegan acknowledged it was a ‘very interesting’ post-match interview[/caption]
O’Shea led the way from the start and wound up being their top scorer with a haul of 12 points.
Afterwards during his Player of the Match interview he made a point of how their dominant second half showing only came as a surprise to those on the outside looking in.
The Kenmare clubman emphasized: “We were written off. People weren’t giving us a hope, even down home (in Kerry).
“But we’ve a really tight group. Nobody knows what goes inside there in our dressing room. As fellas we love each other. We’re a really tight group and I think that showed there today.
“We’d asked the Kerry crowd to get behind us today and they really did help us out there during that second half.”
He was then asked had their more fringe players proven they’re up to the task of being potential All-Ireland winners.
The three-time All-Star noted that today’s contest enforced another case of “next man up” on them when star defender Tom O’Sullivan was forced off with a muscle injury.
He added: “People have probably talked about our squad and said that we don’t have strength in depth.
“But we showed today that we do. Look at Evan Looney coming in for Tom O’Sullivan after 10 or 15 minutes.
“In only his third or fourth Championship game I thought he took it to like a duck to water. Nothing phased him.
“So we’ve full faith in our squad, we see the standards in it every night in training. We just can’t wait to get two more weeks out of them.”
When the camera threw back to Joanne Cantwell and the punditry team of Lee Keegan, Tomás Ó Sé and Derry midfielder Conor Glass, they were struck by its forthright nature.
While it wasn’t exactly Kieran Donaghy “Well Joe Brolly what do you think about that” levels of score-settling, host Cantwell noted how fired up he clearly was.
KINGDOM COMING
She summarised: “Lots of fight from Sean O’Shea, not only on the pitch but in his words as well.”
Mayo great Keegan then chipped in: “That was a very interesting interview I have to say. Interesting hearing say they’d extra energy from morning to night.
“And they clearly threw off the shackles. But as well as that their work-rate and intensity (was the number one factor).
“Enda McGinly on commetary was right to call it a statement performance.
“They did everything right today. To score 32 points that is some return in a game like that. So listen, it was a deserving victory and he in particular was awesome.”
Kerry will face another familiar Ulster foe as they were drawn against Tyrone while Donegal and Meath will square off in the other semi-final after the Royals knocked out 2024 runners-up Galway.
Those games will play out across July 12 and 13 with exact fixture details to be confirmed by the CCCC on Monday.
