Race for Aras heats up as ex-TD throws hat in to become President of Ireland despite possible ballot battle with Bertie

EX-MINISTER Mary Hanafin wants to become President of Ireland and has thrown her hat in the ring to become Fianna Fail’s candidate.

However, the Fianna Fail stalwart will face a battle to get on the ballot as she faces competition from another ex-Minister and possibly even a former Taoiseach.

With just four months left before an election has to be held, the race for the Aras is finally starting to heat up as wannabe Presidents seek to secure a nomination.

Political parties are purposely leaving it late to declare their candidates due to fears that a lengthy Presidential election campaign could get dirty.

Former Fianna Fail Minister Mary Hanafin today openly declared her desire to run for the Presidency as she looks to secure the nomination from her party.

She told RTE: “Yes I’d love the opportunity. I’d love the opportunity to be a Fianna Fail candidate and I’d love to bring my experience in public service and law into the job of President which is the most important job in the country.

“I’m sorry to see so many people ruling themselves out. I think the public at this stage know who doesn’t want to run but they don’t know who does want to run and maybe the time is now to start that.”

The ex-Dun Laoghaire TD served in the Dail from 1997 to 2011 when she lost her seat in an election that crushed Fianna Fail in the aftermath of the financial crash.

She served as a Minister in a host of departments during her time in the Dail including Education, Social Affairs, Tourism and Sport, and Enterprise.

Asked why she thinks she should be President, Mary Hanafin said: “I would like to bring 30 years of public service at local and national level to the job where I’ve worked very closely with individuals and with communities.

“I believe it is in the first instance a constitutional role. It’s set out in the constitution. You take an oath to the service and the welfare of people which I would like to bring.”

It’s understood that Mary Hanafin has already spoken with Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin about her interest in becoming Fianna Fail’s candidate in the election.

This open declaration of interest today from Mary Hanafin will likely fire the starting gun for other wannabe candidates for the election.

MORE CANDIDATES

Reports over the weekend suggest that former Limerick TD Peter Power has also held discussions with Fianna Fail’s leadership team about possibly throwing his hat in the ring for the Aras.

The Limerick man served in Government from 2002 to 2011 and was a junior Minister in the Department of Foreign Affairs.

He has since ran the Unicef Ireland charity as Executive Director.

Former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern openly flirted with the idea of running as President by not ruling out the prospect during several media interviews.

However, it’s understood that several senior figures within Fianna Fail are against the idea of Bertie becoming the party’s candidate as his past problems will be dragged up during the campaign.

Current MEP Cynthia Ni Mhurcu has also been talked about in political circles as a potential candidate while her colleague in Brussels Barry Andrews recently ruled himself out as a runner.

Robbie Brennan hails ‘genius’ Jordan Morris as Meath stun Galway to reach All-Ireland semi-final

Robbie Brennan hailed the ‘genius’ of Jordan Morris as Meath pulled off yet another massive Championship shock.

Rewind back to April and there were many nervous Meath fans in Navan before their Leinster SFC game against Offaly.

Meath manager Robbie Brennan has special praise for the player after the triumph at GAA HQ

But a couple of months on the Royals are just one win from a first All-Ireland final appearance in nearly a quarter of a century.

In any other season they’d probably have the Sam Maguire Cup already tucked away after beating Division 1 heavyweights Dublin, Kerry and now Galway.

They could yet reach that Holy Grail too because they keep making fools of anyone who dares to write them off.

And in Morris they have a player in All-Star form with the capacity to punish the very best defences.

He blasted 1-6 from play and showed all his quality in the crucial last 10 minutes as the underdogs turned the screw.

It looked like the Championship’s dark horses had run their race when Galway reeled off 2-3 without response at the start of the final quarter.

The Connacht champions showed all their experience and big-game quality during that spell of supremacy with goals from Cillian McDaid and Liam Silke.

But their dream of going one better than the 2022 and 2024 final defeats was dashed by a remarkable Meath finale.

And Morris was at the hub of it with 1-2 from the Kingscourt clubman in the closing eight minutes alone.

Goalscorer Conor Gray had a big impact when he came on too while the fit again Mathew Costello showed all his class.

And there were huge displays from Ruairi Kinsella, Donal Keogan, Sean Rafferty and Bryan Menton too.

But Morris conjured the magic that dragged once mighty Meath back to a first semi-final in 15 years.

Boss Brennan said: “I keep saying to people, there’s a touch of genius about Jordan. I’ve referenced before the likes of Shane Walsh for Galway, who was out there playing, and maybe Paul Mannion too having worked with these guys.

“But Jordan is absolutely in that category. He is impossible to mark at times, literally impossible to mark.

“At other times he might have a turnover and lose the ball but they’re what we call creative turnovers. You’re allowed to have them when you’re that type of player.

“Even at half-time, I spoke to Jordan. We were saying, ‘Keep on trying for it, keep on trying it’ because we knew what he has, that ability, and we knew it would come good for him eventually.

“And he showed it in the second-half there. He’s just unreal. He can’t be stopped when he’s in form like that.”

Brennan has brought vital belief to a Meath side that struggled badly under Colm O’Rourke last year.

They played five Championship games in 2024 and lost the last four. Dublin and Kerry hammered them last year and Monaghan knocked them out of the Championship.

But all of those teams have been eliminated from this year’s race for Sam while Meath are still standing.

Brennan threw it back on the players and said their stunning form and huge fitness reserves have made it possible, claiming Rafferty and Kinsella are certain All-Stars.

Brennan beamed: “We backed our fitness. I knew we’d run all day with the work that David Drake and the S&C lads had done with them. I knew we could keep going no matter what the temperature, the humidity, that they’d be able to just keep going and going and going.

“And then we had a brilliant impact off the bench as well. So all round I think a top-notch performance.”

Even Brennan would accept that Meath made mistakes though, particularly in the first-half.

Costello spilled a routine possession, gifting the ball back to Galway, and Ciaran Caulfield kicked a free straight out over the sideline.

But Meath were still more direct and attack-minded whilst Galway seemed to want to slow up the play.

Galway finished the half strongly to lead 0-7 to 0-6 at the interval before returning to Meath’s slipstream throughout the third quarter.

Costello and Morris split five points between them after the restart before Gray capped a speedy breakaway with Meath’s first goal.

Galway felt Daniel O’Flaherty was fouled but Martin McNally waved play on and Sean Coffey kick-passed long to Gray who barrelled through the defence before netting.

Morris thumped the air in delight as Meath roared 1-12 to 0-9 clear but their six-point lead was a short lived thing.

Walsh drilled a two-pointer for Galway. Then Rob Finnerty played in McDaid for a Galway goal and Silke grabbed another four minutes later.

Suddenly, Meath trailed by 1-12 to 2-12 and looked to have succumbed to Galway’s quality and big-game experience.

But the last Leinster team left in the Championship had stored up one final kick for the last lap of an incredible race.

Lionel Messi left shell-shocked as Inter Miami THUMPED by old team PSG in front of owner David Beckham at Club World Cup

LIONEL MESSI was left shell-shocked in front of Inter Miami owner David Beckham at the Club World Cup.

Messi saw himself 4-0 down at half-time against his former side Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16 at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

Lionel Messi was left shell-shocked by his former team PSG at the Club World Cup

Joao Neves scored the first two goals, heading home unmarked inside six minutes before finishing off a lovely team move in the 39th minute.

And Inter Miami’s naive hopes of a miracle were soon dashed when Tomas Aviles‘ own goal saw the MLS side capitulate on the stroke of half-time.

Meanwhile, Achraf Hakimi piled on the misery in the third minute of first-half injury time.

As the Moroccan full-back, widely regarded as the best in the world in his position was celebrating, Messi looked up to the scoreboard in complete disbelief.

And while Beckham was celebrating his former club’s Champions League win in Germany last month, he looked more stern during the battering while wearing his arm in a sling.

The Argentine footie legend, 38, was sent a brutal warning by the French press ahead of his reunion with PSG.

French newspaper L’Equipe plastered a picture of Messi on the front page with the tagline: “Messi… not all is forgiven.”

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner left PSG in 2023 on a free transfer once his contract in the French capital expired.

But, he wasn’t a fan favourite in France, as PSG failed to secure the Champions League trophy despite having the most prolific front three in Europe.

He caused further upset in the country as he played a crucial role in France‘s World Cup heartbreak in 2022.

Trump says he has group of ‘very wealthy people’ lined up to buy TikTok after pushing back ban of social media app

DONALD Trump said he has a group of “very wealthy people” lined up to buy TikTok.

The President has repeatedly delayed a ban blocking the app to allow more time for negotiations with the Chinese owners – who have consistently refused to sell.

TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew has argued the sale to American owners is not necessary[/caption]

Trump has fought to force TikTok’s owners to sell to an American party since his first term.

A bill signed last year makes it illegal to operate under the current Chinese owners, but the ban has been delayed three times and the company has always refused to sell.

However, on Sunday, Trump told Fox News a “group of very wealthy people” wanted to purchase the app from ByteDance.

He said: “I think I will need China[’s] approval, and I think President Xi will probably do it.”

Without revealing any details, he added: “I’ll tell you in about two weeks.”

The closest to Trump has come to barring American users from TikTok was at the time of his inauguration in January this year.

A ban took effect on January 19, and TikTok shut itself down an hour before that, telling users “you can’t use TikTok for now” due to a “law banning TikTok”.

But around 12 hours later it came back online after conversations between the US and China behind the scenes – and was available for download again three weeks later.

Since then, Trump has delayed the ban three times – twice for 75 days and most recently by 90 days on June 17.

The eventual ban or sale is required by a “foreign adversary” bill signed in March 2024.

ByteDance challenged the Act, but it was upheld by the Supreme Court in January.

It’s not clear how much TikTok would sell for, with valuations ranging from $30billion to $300billion.

Rumoured new American owners have included major tech companies like Microsoft and Oracle.

The wildly popular YouTuber Mr Beast, real name Jimmy Donaldson, said in January he would submit an official offer for TikTok through and investment group led by Jesse Tinsley.

Steve Mnuchin, Trump’s treasury secretary during his first term in office, also floated the idea of purchasing the app with a group of billionaire investors when the ban was first passed.

Amazon reportedly made a last-minute bid to purchase TikTok three days before the second recent extension in April.

The bill banning continued Chinese ownership of TikTok cites concerns about national security risks.

ByteDance was initially given nine months to sell-up – and that expired in January.

However, the company has repeatedly insisted it will not give-up the app.

It said in April: “ByteDance doesn’t have any plans to sell TikTok.”

Reports circulated that it was considering a sale of the app without the key algorithm, but these were denied.

The owners insisted: “Foreign media reports of ByteDance selling TikTok are not true.”

Those watching at home are convinced he has targeted Helena again after both he and Shakira found themselves in the bottom six.

One person commented: “How convenient that Harry runs back to kiss Helena after him and Shakira were in the bottom 6. If Helena takes him back and doesn’t actually see that he is playing a game, she can go. She can leave the villa and planet earth for all I care. Maybe they will accept the return of the mug on Mars.”

A second said: “Harry and Shakira are both in the bottom 3 but Helena isn’t and now he starts making moves on her again …..wow what a coincidence.”

While a third added:  “Of course Harry will go back Helena wasn’t in the bottom and Shakira was. Playing the ultimate game.”

And others begged for him to be axed, with one writing: “Can Helena and Harry go home already.”

In scenes set to air tonight the girls go first and Helena chooses to snog Harry, remarking: “It’s been a while and I wanted to test the waters.”

Shakira goes next and snogs Harry too, saying “I fancy the pants off him.”

The boys go next and after almost walking past her, Harry pulls Helena in for a snog leaving Shakira open mouthed.

He admits: “There’s undeniable sexual chemistry.”

Harry then chooses to go down on one knee for Shakira, but his proposal is declined.

Later on the Terrace, Toni and Yasmin console an upset Shakira who cries: “I can handle all of them being b****es when I’ve got a good thing with Harry…

“Now everything has gone to sh**.

“Why the f*** would he kiss Helena?”

Harry was initially coupled up with Shakira but then moved on to Helena.

In a surprise move Shakira decided to try again with Harry, following her fall out with Ben.

The pair – who have been dating since 2020 – posted a series of snaps of them following their nuptials.

In one snap, the newlyweds can be seen posing in a picturesque grassy area with the bride posing for the camera in a plunging white wedding dress and veil as Connor – who opted for a beige three-piece suit – gazes at Monica.

While another shows the pair sharing a kiss as they sit at a table during their wedding reception.

Captioning the post, TikTok star Monica, who has 1.1 million followers on TikTok, wrote: “27.06.2025. I married the love of my life. Here’s to forever.” Connor then reshared the post to his own Instagram.

The couple were congratulated on their nuptials as their family and friends flocked to the comments section underneath the post.

One gushed: “This is amazing!!! Huuuuge congrats to you both!!!”

While another wrote: “Congratulations you two beautiful people.”

And a third posted: “The most magical day ever, congratulations Mr & Mrs Calland.”

Coronation Street star Julia Goulding and Emmerdale hunk Lewis Cope also showed their love by leaving heart emojis underneath the post.

The Sun Online revealed back in 2023 how Connor had popped the question to Monica after almost three years of dating

Connor is best known for playing bad boy Jordan Price on the Channel 4 soap.

His character made his first appearance in 2020 and left the village a year later after he was fatally stabbed.

He landed a role in hit TV show Adolescence, playing PC Jenkins, which was released earlier this year.

He said of the job: “Last summer I had the absolute honour working with ridiculously talented cast and creative crews.

“I also got to fulfil a huge career goal of mine, which was to act alongside an actor who inspired me to do this as a career.

“I feel so fortunate and blessed to be a part of this production and cannot wait for the world to see it.”

Bryson DeChambeau brands Royal Portrush ‘diabolical’ ahead of 2025 Open Championship at Antrim course

TWO-TIME major champion Bryson DeChambeau has branded Royal Portrush as “diabolical” ahead of The Open Championship.

The American was speaking ahead of LIV Golf Dallas earlier this week as he prepares for the final major of the 2025 season.

And DeChambeau has described the Antrim venue as “diabolical” as he prepares to return to the venue for the first time since the 2019 Open.

He’ll be aiming to add a third title to his trophy cabinet, DeChambeau has posted top-five finishes at both the Masters and PGA Championship in 2025 but missed the cut at last month’s U.S. Open.

DeChambeau admitted he was frustrated not to have secured a major win this season.

He said: “I’d say disappointed that I haven’t won one yet.

“I’ve got to fine-tune my game and focus on executing my shots the way I know I can on the golf course. I haven’t been doing that recently.

“A little bit more due diligence on my side of the coin. Not taking things for granted and focusing on what I can do to give myself the best chance to win at The Open.

“Probably being a little more strategic that week.”

The last time The Open was held at Royal Portrush was in 2019, Shane Lowry captured his first and only major title, and DeChambeau failed to make the cut that year, as he did at Royal Troon in 2024.

Asked if he had played Portrush before, he replied: “I played it last time around when Shane won.

Pressed on his memory of the course, DeChambeau added: “Yeah, it can be diabolical. Driver is key on that golf course in wind conditions, in side wind conditions.

“It’s going to be a tough test.”

Final Qualifying for The Open at Royal Portrush takes place next Tuesday across Burnham & Berrow, Dundonald Links, Royal Cinque Ports and West Lancashire.

The 153rd Open gets itself gets underway at Royal Portrush, 17–20 July 2025.

Simply Red’s Mick Hucknall, 65, was the first big name to join Rod on stage, performing If You Don’t Know Me By Now.

Not long after, his old mucker from The Faces, Ronnie Wood, 78, rocked out on stage along with Glaswegian powerhouse Lulu, 76, for a rip-roaring version of Hot Legs.

At one point, age-defying Lulu quipped she and Rod made a perfect pairing and apologised to his wife Penny Lancaster.

The expensive show, estimated to be £300k and featuring costume changes and scantily clad backing dancers, delivered the goods.

One viewer wrote: “Rod Stewart. 10 out of 10. One of best Legends slots in #Glasto history. Nailed it.

Another said: “What a set by Rod Stewart, not easy to get through a 1.5 hour set, especially at 80.”

A third posted: “Rod Stewart is still better than anything else that’s been on at Glastonbury all weekend. 80 year old. Ronnie Wood 78 years old. These British Rockers just dont die do they.”

Rod belted out 21 tracks during his extended set, ending with a poignant Sailing.

Elsewhere, there was Do Ya Think I’m Sexy?, Young Turks, Forever Young and covers of Proud Mary and It’s A Heartache.

And Glasto founder Michael Eavis had a cameo appearance at one stage after being pushed onto the stage in his wheelchair by daughter Emiy.

Rod, dressed in a Barbie pink suit, greeted him with a big hug and told him he could stay out if he wanted to.
