The little-known BBQ danger than could prove deadly as warning issued, and the two hour rule you need to follow

AN urgent warning has been issued over a little-known BBQ danger that could prove deadly – and the two-hour rule you need to follow.

As temperatures reach 27C this weekend, Safefood is reminding everyone to keep food safety a top priority when firing up the barbecue.

Not following them may lead to serious foodborne illnesses[/caption]

The food safety bosses said while the grill is a summer staple for many households, not paying attention to basic hygiene and cooking practices can quickly lead to foodborne illness like salmonella.

Top of the list is cleaning your barbecue before and after each use, as leftover grease and food residue can allow bacteria to build up over time.

Safefood recommends scrubbing the grill with a brush and using hot, soapy water before cooking begins and repeating the process once the grill has cooled down.

Leaving food sitting out in the sun is another major concern, particularly with items like raw meats, salads and dips which are especially vulnerable in warmer weather.

Safefood advises that all perishable foods should be kept in the fridge until needed and that any leftovers should be returned to the fridge within two hours to stay safe for later use.

They are also reminding people that frozen meat should never go straight onto the barbecue, as this can result in uneven cooking and an increased risk of undercooked centres.

Instead, all meat and poultry should be completely defrosted in the fridge, so that it cooks thoroughly from edge to centre on the grill.

Cross-contamination was another common concern, with Safefood advising to always keep raw and cooked foods apart during preparation and cooking.

This includes using separate chopping boards, utensils and plates and ensuring hands are washed thoroughly before and after handling raw meat.

Undercooked food is a major contributor to food poisoning, and the food safety bosses said that it is important to use a meat thermometer and do a temperature check.

Burgers, chicken, sausages and kebabs should reach an internal temperature of 75°C to be safe or be piping hot throughout with no pink meat and juices that run clear.

Trish Twohig, Director of Food Safety at Safefood, said that taking small steps like these can make a big difference.

She said: “Hosting a barbecue should be a relaxed and enjoyable experience.

“By following these food safety tips, you can protect your guests and ensure your barbecue is a success.”

Chef Adrian Martin added that basic hygiene and temperature checks are essential to keep things safe.

He said: “Getting the barbecue right is all about enjoying great food safely.

“Simple steps like using a meat thermometer and keeping raw and cooked foods separate are key to a delicious and worry-free summer feast.

“Follow Safefood’s advice, and you’ll be grilling with confidence!”

Safefood also offered a few extra tips for anyone planning a barbecue, starting with checking the fridge for expired items before heading out to shop.

They also suggest pre-cooking meat in the oven before finishing it on the barbecue, which helps to save time and guarantees it is cooked all the way through.

Crystal Palace RELEGATED from Europa League with Nottingham Forest promoted

CRYSTAL Palace’s worst Europa League fears have been confirmed after they were booted OUT of the competition by Uefa chiefs.

FA Cup winners Palace have paid the price for being in the same multi-club ownership group as French giants Lyon after the Uefa disengagement deadline of April 30.

Palace initially earned their spot in the competition by winning the FA Cup[/caption]

Their fate was sealed on Wednesday, when Lyon won their appeal against relegation from Ligue 1.

Uefa regulations state that when clubs that are part of the same ownership umbrella, the team that finished highest in its domestic championship takes priority.

Now Uefa chiefs have ruled that Palace must play in the Conference League and make a European bow in a play-off next month – with Nottingham Forest promoted in their place.

And it will cost Palace an immediate £3.9m in Uefa appearance money – boosting Forest by the same amount.

The news, while expected, will be a devastating blow to the Eagles – although they are certain to appeal to the Swiss-based Court of Arbitration for Sport in a bid to get the ruling overturned.

Palace’s joy at their Wembley triumph over Manchester City was swiftly tempered by the realisation of the complications over US businessman John Textor’s Eagle Football Group owning 44.9 per cent of the Selhurst Park club.

Eagle also included Lyon, who finished sixth in Ligue 1 to qualify for the Europa League, Brazilians Botofogo and Belgian outfit Molenbeek.

While Textor was effectively ostracised from the decision-making process at Selhurst by chairman Steve Parish and US investors Josh Harris and Dave Blitzer, his stake meant Palace fell foul of Uefa rules.

CASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS

Palace did not qualify for their first European campaign until their Wembley win on May 17, 17 days after the Uefa deadline for boardroom reorganisation that would have ensured no potential conflicts of interests between clubs in the same competition.

Parish and the Selhurst hierarchy have frantically lobbied for leeway, arguing that Textor was only a “significant” shareholder in terms of his stake, not his influence.

Manchester United owners Ineos parked their shares in French side Nice in a blind trust to allow both to play in the Europa League last season.

And Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis stepped back from any official role at the City Ground in April, to meet the Uefa requirements, when he hoped the East Midlanders would qualify for the Champions League alongside Greek side Olympiacos.

Last month, Textor announced he had sold his Palace shares to New York Jets owner and former US ambassador to the UK Woody Johnson in a £190m deal, although that has still to be ratified by the Premier League.

But it was not enough for Uefa to budge, having huge ramifications for BOTH Prem clubs.

Unless their CAS appeal succeeds, Palace will have to play a two-legged qualifying round, with the first game on August 21.

If they go through, Palace’s up-front prize money for taking part in Uefa’s third competition will be £5.22m, with their maximum earnings £18.4m.

In contrast, in addition to going directly through to the initial eight-match league phase of the stage and earning £9.1m up front, Forest could earn a further maximum £24.4m.

An extra quirk that will impact both clubs is that Palace host Forest at Selhurst on Sunday August 24, a match that was originally moved back 24 hours because the City Ground club were scheduled to be in Conference League action.

Leaked voicenote ‘reveals Lucy’s savage Love Island plan’ claim fans as Tommy recouples with her and Emily is DUMPED

A LEAKED voice note has revealed a Casa Amor girl’s devious game plan, according to fans.

The 37-second recording, which Love Island fans claim is the voice of Lucy Quinn, lays bare a plot to couple with popular Tommy Bradley as a surefire way to make the final.

The person alleged to be Lucy says: “I’ve got a phone call today by the way, saying they want to fly me out on Tuesday or Monday. So they said to me on Sunday they’ll let me know for 100 percent, but looks like I’m f**king going on one of those days. So they were like, get your stuff packed basically.

“I was like, I’m already packed love. They asked me for my top three boys. And told them, I said, Tommy, I want Tommy. I feel like if I’m with Tommy I feel like I’ll get all the way to the end.

“Because everyone loves him. I don’t know if you’ve been watching it but that Megan’s being sent home and I’m f**king made up.

“And she’s being sent home because of the way she’s treated Tommy. And do you know what, I’m made up that I’ve been watching it because I know how to act.

“Because she’s being a f**king little slapper in there. The public have voted her out. So I just need to be left a nice girl and just f**king stick with Tommy.”

The Sun has contacted Love Island for comment.

Irish beauty Megan Forte Clarke was axed after her love triangle with Conor Phillips and Tommy led her to be voted one of the three least popular girls by the public.

The contestants then chose to evict her, along with Remell Mullins as the least popular boy.

On Wednesday night, Lucy walked into the main villa holding hands with smitten Tommy, who dumped Emily Moran to be with her.

In the most dramatic moment of the recoupling, Emily was left shell-shocked having stayed loyal to Tommy and given a heartfelt speech in which she said she couldn’t wait to see him.

Tommy told the gathered Islanders how he had a better connection with Lucy; the pair had spent the past few days glued together sharing lots of kisses.

Sheepish Lucy admitted it was difficult entering the villa in such a “s****y situation”.

When host Maya Jama told the group that Emily was dumped from the Island, along with five other singletons, Tommy broke down in tears.

The pair eventually went to the terrace to clear the air with Tommy admitting it hurt him to see her upset.

They made up and hugged before Emily exited the villa.

Love Island fans beg producers to step in and AXE ‘disgusting’ star from villa after Maya Jama calls out nasty comment

LOVE Island fans have demanded ITV bosses step in after one Islander was slammed for making a “disgusting” comment – with Maya Jama stepping in to call him out live on screen.

The 30-year-old host wasn’t having any of it during last night’s tense episode as Ben Holborough made a savage dig at Toni Laites that left viewers stunned – and demanding he be kicked out of the villa.

Tensions were already sky high as Harrison Solomon came back hand-in-hand with bombshell Lauren Wood, despite being coupled up with Toni before Casa.

When Maya turned to Toni, 24, for her reaction, she took the high road, saying: “Tommy obviously surprised me, the rest of them not so much.”

But Ben couldn’t help himself, cutting in to say: “I think I’ve got to give it to Harrison – what Lauren’s been able to give him in three days, you haven’t been able to do in two or three weeks.”

Toni shot back: “Save it, b****.”

And Maya quickly stepped in, telling Ben: “I didn’t really like that, Ben. That was unnecessary.”

Fans at home couldn’t believe what they’d heard – and took to X (formerly Twitter) to vent their fury.

“get ben out the VILLA now why is he always opening his mouth????,” fumed one fan.

ben’s comment towards toni was so nasty idc how “funny” people think he is- the way he speaks to women is disgusting and i’m glad maya called him out,” said another.

“The sooner Harry, Ben and Helena are out of that villa the better,” added a third.

Even fellow Islander Shakira Khan jumped in to defend Toni, firing:

“There’s two brain cells up there, I swear.”

Maya also called out Helena Ford for laughing along with Harry Cooksley as footage aired of his flirty Casa antics.

She told Helena: “I don’t know… I probably wouldn’t find that funny if I was in a couple with someone like that.

“You laugh quite a lot when he’s been doing things. Is that to avoid upset or are you genuinely not bothered?”

Helena replied: “It’s not that I’m not bothered, I’m just not surprised.”

Harry tried to defend himself – again – saying: “If I wanted to come back with Rheo I’d have coupled up with her…”

But Maya wasn’t having it. “It doesn’t exclude everything that happened,” she snapped.

Love Island fans are now begging producers to take action against Ben, calling his comments “nasty”, “vile” and “completely out of order”.

“What exactly did Harry say that Conor agrees with???? Get him out omg I hate him. Harry, Dejon, Harrison, Ben and Conor get out now,” raged another viewer.

Love Island continues tonight at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX.

I’m confident my big Saturday bet is easily the best horse in the race – and he can help land us a 23-1 double

HAS the class of Notable Speech and More Thunder fooled some over their optimum trip? I think so.

Ability over distance is a juggling act punters face in many races.

Jockey William Buick winning a horse race.
Rex
Notable Speech is a 2,000 Guineas winner – but he could prove just as brilliant as a sprinter with the drop to 6f in the July Cup[/caption]

What do I mean by that?

Well in an extreme example let’s take Frankel – arguably the world’s best ever Flat horse – who clearly would have beaten a 70-rated handicap over 2m and a 70-rated sprinter over 5f.

Yet Frankel, from the evidence we have, was best at 1m and 1m2f. His class was just something else.

Notable Speech has only ever raced over a mile in his ten starts.

His victories include the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket and Sussex Stakes at Goodwood and his defeats include a fine third in the Breeders’ Cup Mile.

But if the Charlie Appleby-trained runner had failed in the Guineas he might well have gone sprinting as a three-year-old.

On Saturday he finally does that in the Group 1 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai July Cup over 6f.

It was clearly a late decision, as he was supplemented at a cost of £36,000. But I suspect it will prove inspired.

Notable Speech’s pedigree suggests speed is what he is all about.

His broodmare sire Invincible Spirit won the Haydock Park Sprint. He also has Pivotal in the mix, and he gets fast horses.

Lots of milers have done well in the July Cup.

Landseer was fourth in the 2002 renewal after landing a French 2000 Guineas, while Alcohol Free banged in the Sussex Stakes and Coronation before taking the 2022 July Cup.

Further back remember Chief Singer and Green Desert?

They were both placed in 2,000 Guineas and won this very same big sprint.

Ajdal landed the July Cup after running in the Derby and Royal Academy took this prize before a thrilling success in the Breeders’ Cup Mile.

Dream Ahead went from the St James’s Palace Stakes to this event having finished fifth at Ascot.

Notable Speech was actually seventh in that last year and fourth in the Queen Anne in June.

The trip will be no excuse for Notable Speech and his draw looks good. I’m confident he’s easily the best horse.

Opposition in a big field includes Wathnan improver Flora Of Bermuda – third to owner companion Lazzat in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Royal Ascot – and Whistlejacket, sixth in the Commonwealth Cup but a fine juvenile for Aidan O’Brien and a horse who has been backed down from much bigger prices.

He won the July Stakes over course and distance last season but that was on good to soft.

Inisherin has the ability to run a big one but was only fifth this time last year when the 11-8 favourite.

Believing was poor at Royal Ascot from a bad draw, while Jasour might be the best of the outsiders.

It’s a marathon on ITV Racing on Saturday, with no fewer than 12 races being shown. It will be hard to keep up.

More Thunder is back out for William Haggas in the bet365 Bunbury Cup over 7f after an unlucky second in the Wokingham over 6f at Royal Ascot.

That performance came on the back of two Newmarket successes oved 6f.

Tom Marquand described the Ascot defeat as “disgusting”, but like Notable Speech it might just be those 6f victories came from class.

Sir Michael Stoute ran this boy up to and extended 1m2f last season and he won his novice over 1m2f.

Seven furlongs in the Bunbury Cup should be no issue and it’s easy to argue he’s been crying out for a little further.

Who is to say he’s not a Group horse masquerading as a handicapper and doesn’t end up in something like the Group 1 Foret at the end of the season?

If he is then he’s chucked in here off 98.

There is top class racing at York and Ascot too.

At York I’m hoping for a good spin from See That Storm in the John Smith’s Cup Handicap over an extended 1m2f.

My selection goes for Ed Bethell and Callum Rodriguez and is lightly raced after just nine starts at the age of four.

He has a reasonable draw and upped to a mark of 95 – the same here – finished second to Burrito over a little bit further at this track last time.

This distance looks ideal and there is no reason why he won’t be in the mix again – he has thrived since going to Bethell from the Andrew Balding yard.

A notable Saturday. Let’s hope it’s one to shout about let alone give a good speech!
