A MUM is issuing a harrowing warning to fellow parents to look out for a certain warning sign after her teenage daughter was diagnosed with a “silent killer”.
Eva Rainey would spend most evenings in her room doing art and homework – but the 16-year-old’s routine was hiding a life-threatening secret.

Jam Press/Sarcoma UKEva’s only symptom was a lump the size of a grapefruit that developed in her back[/caption]
Jam Press/Sarcoma UKWithout treatment, Eva only has five years left to live[/caption]
A lump, the size of a grapefruit, had developed in her back; which had gone unnoticed.
The teenager, from Somerset, shrugged it off and thought it’d disappear on its own.
But after a few weeks, it was still there.
Eva, who had no other symptoms, was diagnosed with a “silent killer” form of cancer.
And it’s estimated that without treatment, of which there’s little-to-none available, she only has five years left to live.
“It feels as if cancer has stolen not only Eva’s, but our lives and future, too,” the teenager’s mum, Jennifer, 48, said.
“Everything is so uncertain right now.
“We’re trying not to think in terms of years and dates, but rather on her quality of life.
“It’s really exhausting, though.
“I just thought the back pain she had complained of was because she was sitting at her desk for far too long doing art and homework.
“For a long time, there had been no visible lump at all – and when one appeared, it was tiny.
“I never dreamed it could be cancer.
“I fear how the disease will progress and not knowing is equally frightening.
“We still talk about Eva’s future, but we have conversations about death and funerals, too.”
Eva’s diagnosis
Eva was diagnosed with sclerosing epithelioid fibrosarcoma, an aggressive form of soft tissue cancer.
It’s characterised by small, round tumours that recur and spread rapidly to other parts of the body.
Symptoms are usually far and few between.
It’s so rare that there is little data recorded on how many cases there are worldwide, according to the National Cancer Institute.
For Eva, her limited treatment options have dwindled and now, it’s spread across her entire body.
Her mum, Jennifer, has had to give up her career as a teacher to care for her daughter full-time.
For now, we’re just going to keep living until we stop
Jennifer Rainey
She said: “It’s been awful. “Just one terrible revelation after another.
“It was agonising to learn that she needed chemotherapy, but then being told it wouldn’t work.
“They feared it’d be inoperable, but we found a surgeon who could do it.
“We live with uncertainty and this burden on us daily.
“For now, we’re just going to keep living until we stop.”
Uncertain future
Eva currently has cancer in her bones; specifically in her leg, spine, scapula and hips.
She’s had to undergo surgery to have parts of her ribs and spine removed to extract as much of the disease as possible.
To give his daughter the best chance of life, Paul – a molecular biologist – has drawn on his contacts in the industry to help.
A drug, which is used in the US to treat cancer patients of this type, was given to Eva on a “compassionate use” basis.
Due to the lack of clinical proof that it worked, though, this was then stopped.
Paul is now raising money to help fund research into finding a cure, including a 1,000-mile bike ride from Land’s End to John O’Groats.

He added: “The rarity of Eva’s cancer type means her future is uncertain.
“We live in hope that something new will come along from clinical research and save our little girl’s life.
“It would be great to raise some money so that some clinical trials could take place – if not for Eva, but for someone in the future.
“If you saw her, you’d think there was nothing wrong – she’s like every other teenager.
“But we’re in a situation now where things are just going to keep going downhill and there’s nothing we can do.
“It’s been an absolute rollercoaster.
“Eva just keeps going, though. “She still goes to school and is in her first year of GCSEs.
“And has hope for the future.
“We don’t want to take that from her.”
Sarcoma UK is funding two research projects to understand the biology behind the rare form of cancer to find a cure.
Emily Williams, from the charity’s research team, said: “SEF is an ultra-rare cancer where clinicians are working almost blind – they don’t have the molecular roadmaps or biomarkers that could help predict which treatments might work for which patients.
“Instead of the trial-and-error approach faced – trying immunotherapy, then Pazopanib, with no way to predict their effectiveness, future families could have precision medicine tailored to their child’s specific tumour biology.
“These projects represent the detailed scientific work that could mean the difference between hope and answers for the next young person diagnosed with an ultra-rare sarcoma.”
What is sclerosing epithelioid fibrosarcoma?
Sclerosing epithelioid fibrosarcoma (SEF) is an aggressive type of soft tissue sarcoma.
SEF is a very rare tumour, with limited data on its incidence and prevalence.
While it can occur in various locations, it’s often found in the deep musculature of the limbs, trunk, and neck.
And it often presents as a painless lump that can grow over time.
Symptoms can vary depending on the tumour’s location, with potential pain, weakness, or shortness of breath as it grows and potentially compresses surrounding tissues or organs.
Surgical resection is a primary treatment, but local recurrence and distant metastasis are common.

A WOMAN has revealed she’s had to take drastic measures to stop her ”sad and nosy” neighbour from peeking into her garden.
The furious woman and TikToker only known as @buddalove claimed that before the neighbour moved in ”life was great”.

TikTok / @buddaloveThe neighbours have now also started looking over the fence by standing ”on something” for a better view[/caption]
However, now the property next door has become home to a ”single mum, living with her mum”, as well as a child.
According to the frustrated woman, who’s also managed to take a snap of the neighbours peeking from their windows, they spend ”every evening staring at us and looking over when sitting with hubby quietly to a drink”.
Although the TikToker has allegedly ”reported” the ”annoying” issue, the nuisance hasn’t stopped.
The furious woman also added that she’s tried knocking on their door to see what the issue is – however, she doesn’t want to cause any further problems for herself.
Budda Love explained: ”I would love to knock on her door but I don’t wanna get done for harassment.
”I do shout out every time when I catch them! Madness.
”Life was great until she moved in.”
It’s not just windows that the family take a sneak peek through – according to the social media users, the neighbours have now also started looking over the fence by standing ”on something” for a better view.
”We started doing rituals against them so they watch a better show,” she chuckled in a recent video.
But while some suggested buying a pergola or planting trees, the woman revealed that she’s come up with a new solution – and one that means she can sunbathe in peace.
To block their view as much as possible, Budda Love has since resorted to ‘wasting’ her bed sheets – which she’s set up as a DIY tent.
Fuming, she said: ”F****g sad, nosy neighbours. Wasted my clean sheets.”
How to create privacy in your garden
CREATING privacy in your garden can be achieved in a number of ways depending on your budget, and the size of your space. Here are some effective ways to enhance privacy in your garden:
1. Fencing
Install a tall, solid wooden or vinyl fence. This is one of the most straightforward ways to gain immediate privacy. Or use lattice panels, trellis, or slatted fencing to add a decorative touch while still offering privacy.
2. Hedges and Plants
Fast-growing evergreen shrubs or trees like Leylandii, Thuja, or Bamboo along the boundary of your garden can help with privacy. Grow a dense hedge using plants like Boxwood, Privet, or Laurel. It may take time to grow, but it provides a natural and green privacy screen. Use climbers like Ivy, Clematis, or Wisteria on fences or trellises to create a lush, green privacy barrier.
3. Outdoor Curtains
Hang outdoor curtains around pergolas, gazebos, or patios for an easy-to-adjust privacy solution.
4. Sound Barriers
A water fountain or small waterfall can help drown out noise, adding to the sense of privacy. Or install fencing designed to reduce noise if privacy from sound is also a concern.
Social media users react
The video – which many said they could relate to – has since taken the platform by storm, amassing close to a whopping 300k views and 294k likes in just two days.
More than 130 people also flooded to comments, where many suggested their solutions – some more hilarious and bizarre than others.
One joked: ”You should take the sheets away, turn your chairs round to face them….and sit there and watch them watching you all evening.”
Another chimed in: ”I can relate!”
Someone else chuckled: ”you should start doing random things in your back garden like wear black robes with a hood and start doing pretend satanic rituals with candles and freak them out lol.”
A fourth advised: ”get rid of the concrete, plant some trees nobody overlooks you then.”

TEAMS of football-playing robots have been filmed fumbling around the pitch as part of a new tournament in China.
The Beijing-based ROBO League football tournament saw teams of humanoid robots kicking, scoring and tumbling through matches on Saturday.

Four teams faced off in a series of three-on-three games, with the robots operating autonomously using artificial intelligence (AI).
Visual sensors in the robots act as their eyes, so they can identify the ball navigate the field.
Using AI in the robots means they can kick, dribble, plan, make decisions, cooperate and shoot completely on their own.
Human research teams sat on the sidelines watching robots exercise their abilities in motion control, visual perception, positioning and navigation, decision-making, and multi-robot collaboration.
The matches went ahead with little human intervention – besides a near pile-up when one robot fell over and nearly took out two other.
But despite being designed to pick themselves up after falls, two robots still required stretchers from staff after ‘injuries’.
Other robots struggled to kick the ball.
It is touted to be China’s first AI football competition.
It offers a glimpse into the upcoming World Humanoid Robot Games in August, which will also be held in Beijing.
China is actively investing in AI and robotics, which is increasingly being utilised in sports.
Cheng Hao, CEO of Booster Robotics, which supplied the robots, said competitions like these will help improve the robots more quickly.
He also said that robots playing football with humans safely could build public trust in the future.
Booster Robotics provided the robot hardware, while university research teams developed their own AI algorithms for perception, decision-making, and game strategies.
In the final match, Tsinghua University’s THU Robotics defeated China Agricultural University’s Mountain Sea team 5-3.

McManus was the hero for Bohs with a late winner against Cork City in AprilSligo Rovers currently sit in ninth place as they fight to avoid relegation
And the midfielder has now moved to The Showgrounds in search of regular football with boss Alan Reynolds insisting he remains a big part of his long-term plans.
Reynolds said: “James is a quality midfielder with huge potential who has a massive future ahead of him with Bohs.
“He has done really well for us this season but we felt that after his season last year was disrupted so much by injury, the best thing for James’ development right now is that he is playing and starting regularly.
“He’s been around the first team for so long now that people forget he is only 20.
“The hope for him now is that he will play regularly at Sligo Rovers and come back to us at the end of the year an even better player than he already is.”
McManus broke into the first team in 2022 and had a much greater involvement in 2023 when he helped the club reach the FAI Cup final.
He also came close to joining Norwich City but ultimately stayed at Dalymount but endured a stop-start season in 2024 because of injuries with the return of Dawson Devoy and Ross Tierney to the club increasing competition for places.
McManus said: “I’ve been in and out and haven’t played as much as I feel I need to and want to. I spoke to Bohs about letting me go for a short while and once that was agreed, John was straight in touch.
“It didn’t take long for me to be convinced that Sligo was the place for me.
“I have seen how many young players have flourished under John at the Showgrounds. He puts trust in young players and gives you a platform to show people that young players are good enough to play at this level.”
Bohs have, meanwhile, welcomed back Cian Byrne from his loan spell at Galway United.
The centre-back will help fill the void left by the departure of Seán Grehan.
Grehan was signed by Doncaster Rovers from Crystal Palace on a three-year deal after an impressive loan stint with his former club Bohs.
Byrne, 22, played every game for which he was eligible for Galway.
Reynolds said “Cian is similar to James in that he is at the stage of his career where it was important to keep getting more games under his belt to continue to develop.
“He’s been an ever-present for Galway this season and the experience he has had being away from the club for a period and playing so regularly should really stand to him now.
“So we are really looking forward to getting him back into the group.”

EXPERTS warn that a “warm” phone and “random” texts could mean you are the victim of “bank-targeting” criminals.
McAfee has revealed the common ways phones become infected and the seven signs to look out for you when it comes to spotting a virus.
GettyMcAfee has shared the seven signs that your phone has a virus[/caption]
GettyA warn phone and random texts could mean your device is at risk[/caption]
The signs your phone could have a virus
Among the signs that your phone could have a virus is the device feeling “physically hot”, as well as random messages being sent to your contacts.
The warning reads: “When you accidentally download apps that contain malware, your device has to work harder to continue functioning.
“Since your phone isn’t built to support malware, there is a good chance it will overheat.”
Other signs that you could be being targeted include quicker battery drainage and the appearance of random pop-up ads.
“Random” texts mean you are being targeted
With regards to random messages, McAfee added: “If your contacts receive unsolicited scam emails or messages on social media from your account, especially containing suspicious links, a virus may have accessed your contacts list.”
In this scenario, McAfee recommends phone users let all the recipients know your phone has been hacked to prevent them from downloading any malware themselves.
Removing a virus from your phone
The software protection company advises that if your device has been infected, you download antivirus software or a mobile security app to help you located existing viruses.
It also recommends users do a sweep of their app library and delete any apps that don’t look familiar.
The article added: “Be sure to back up important documents to the cloud.
“Create strong passwords for all your accounts after cleaning up your phone, and protect them using a password manager.”
These steps can help protect your phone and personal information such as bank details and account logins from criminals.
