Jaw-dropping footage showed fellow surfers and swimmers rushing to help the teen while the shark lurked closely behind him – visible only by its gargantuan fin.
Screams could be heard in the background as a brave person punched the shark while others scrambled to safety.
But rescuers continued to be stalked by the creature as they carried the injured boy to safety.
One shocked onlooker exclaimed in the clip: “Oh my God, that’s the shark.”
And another said: “Oh f***! That’s really scary!”
Thankfully an off-duty paramedic was at the scene and helped the teen using a tourniquet to help stop the excessive bleeding.
One of the heroes who raced to help the boy after hearing his deafening screams was Brazilian Thiago Collel.
Recalling the horror incident, he explained how the boy sustained injuries that left one of his arms hanging off by a thread of sinew.
The 39-year-old told Daily Mail: “When I got to the shore, he had been dragged in by a group of people including an off-duty paramedic who happened to be walking on the beach at the time.
“His bicep was destroyed – you could see all the muscle, flesh and bone.
“He lost a scary amount of blood. I was covered in it.”
The group then carried the boy out to safety on a surfboard they used as a makeshift stretcher.
Collel said he and several others “were just trying to keep him calm, holding his head and making sure he was okay”.
He added: “I just kept talking to him and he told me how he fought off the shark by kicking and punching it away.”
The boy was then airlifted to Gold Coast University Hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.
He remains here in serious but stable condition, the news site added.
A second chopper was deployed to track down the shark after the horror incident, but to no avail.
The species of shark currently remains unknown, but locals believe it was a bull shark.
Some even fear it could be a two-metre great white.

A BEACH in the UK which has some of the dirtiest water in the country could never be safe to swim in again, experts have warned.
Heacham Beach won a “Brown Flag” award earlier this year, which is given to the dirtiest beaches in the UK.
AlamyHeacham Beach may never be a swimmable beach[/caption]
AlamyHigh pollution levels in the water have been attributed to bird waste[/caption]
The unofficial award is a version of the Blue Flag, an official ranking of the cleanest beaches.
Not only that, but the beach has been classified as poor quality since 2021 by the Environment Agency, with high levels of pollution in the water.
The dirty waters have been credited to animal waste coming from seabirds – as much as 60 per cent – rather than sewage waste.
The bacteria levels are highest in July and August – the peak tourist season – although the reasons are still being discussed.
Suggestions include a lack of rainfall and an increase in tourism.
West Norfolk Council cabinet member for environment, Sandra Squire, said: “Sooner or later we may have to admit, if 60 per cent of pollution is coming from the bird population, it may be that this area should not be for bathing.”
She added: “If Anglian Water said they cannot cope, then nothing else should be connected to that sewage works.
“We all know what happens when they can’t cope – we end up with sewage in our streets, our rivers and seas.”
Year-round testing is being suggested to work out the reason for the pollution, as most if done during the summer period.
Not only that, but it could soon get even worse.
Anglian Water’s (AW) sewage works recently said they were nearing capacity – meaning potentially more pollution.
Ms Squire added: “If Anglian Water said they cannot cope, then nothing else should be connected to that sewage works.
“We all know what happens when they can’t cope, we end up with sewage in our streets, our rivers and seas”.
It also means tourists are unlikely to visit the beaches if it continues, with on local saying he was met with an “appalling stench of sewage” while there.
Following it’s Brown Flag Award – with Heacham being one of 13 in the UK to get one – other visitors have also said they worry about being able to swim in it.
One mum, who visits every day with her daughter, said it was “not very pleasant” to look out.
She told the BBC: “We check the signs and it always says poor quality don’t swim.
“Some days there’s foam on the water which is a brown colour.”
Anglian Water is now investing more than £31million into improving the waters in the region, up to 2027.

“And most of all — grateful it’s me and not one of my children, family, or friends.”
Jennifer’s first step in her cancer journey begins this week with surgery followed by treatment.
She said: “It won’t be easy but I’m feeling strong and positive.

ACE student Oliver Tarvet is swotting up for the biggest exam of his life – and aiming to bring down Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz.
But even if Tarvet topples the king of SW19 tomorrow, he will pocket barely any of the £152,000 on offer.
GettyOliver Tarvet booked his place in the second round of Wimbledon[/caption]
Yet Tarvet, who has never before played in front of more than a few hundred spectators, can look forward to walking out in front of nearly 15,000 fans on Centre Court.
The St Albans-born Tarvet admitted: “As a kid, it’s what you dream of and work for. But for it to happen so suddenly is really special. For me, though, nothing has really changed.
“I’m quietly confident that I can win against anyone and Alcaraz is no exception to that.
CASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS
“Obviously, he’s done an incredible amount in the tennis world. He’s a difficult guy not to respect.
“But I’ve got to just go out there and treat it like another match, play the ball, not the player, even if it is going to be pretty special.”
For a student playing his first Grand Slam – having come through three tough rounds of qualifying last week – Tarvet was pretty special as he won 6-4 6-4 6-4 without facing a break point.
He embraced his team, family and friends in a huge courtside huddle after Riedi hit his backhand long on match point – a huge smile across his face.
Riedi, who got into a row with German umpire Miriam Bley after suggesting she allowed the Brit to take too long between points – and then apologised – admitted he simply had no chance.
He said: “Oliver was a wall, a huge wall, who moved unbelievably.
“I thought that he might get nervous at some point and give me a chance but he just didn’t miss at all.
“He looked like a top-50 player out there and if he can play like that against Alcaraz, it will be tough to beat him.”
That would have seemed an unlikely prediction before Alcaraz took more than four-and-a-half hours to finally see off Fognini 7-5 6-7 7-5 2-6 6-1, the five-time Major winner at times looking almost lost for inspiration.
And the Spaniard conceded: “The heat was brutal, really difficult to deal with. I felt really nervous to start with – because Wimbledon is just different to any other tournament.
“I need to improve a lot but I know how to deal with tough situations. Champions always find a way to win.”
Quizzed over his next opponent, Alcaraz admitted: “I hadn’t even heard his name until he qualified.
“But I watched a bit of his match before I went on court and he played some great tennis.
“I cannot think I’m going to win easily because if I don’t play my best, I can lose. If he is in the second round he deserves to be here, whatever his ranking.”
Tarvet’s student status in the US means he cannot earn more than £7,300 in prize money in a calendar year, although he is allowed to discount “expenses” and to have sponsorship deals – he wore a TK Maxx patch against Riedi.
On the SW19 prize money, he added: “I’ve got to find £60,000 or £70,000 of expenses. Tennis is an expensive sport.
“So, maybe I just pay my coaches a little bit extra or fly them business class. But I need to keep humble and make that happen.”
Instead, he will have a priceless adventure against Alcaraz, boosted by his highly personal mental preparation.
Tarvet explained: “My journal is a big thing for me.
“You could see on the court that I have a little notepad and write things that allow me to focus on what makes me good and gives me success.
“Something that gives me comfort is focusing on those things.
“Those little triggers that keep me in the right headspace. That’s given me a lot of success.
“Before or after practice, if there’s a feeling, a thought I like, I write it down so I have it on paper and then can use it.
“When you’re playing, especially in front of crowds, it’s important not to let the moment get too big or lose your focus. It just keeps me grounded.”
Yet if he sends Alcaraz tumbling, you suspect even the journal will make it tough for Tarvet to keep grounded.
