Heartache as man, 50s, with ‘heart of gold’ dies in horror house fire in Co Antrim & tributes pour in for ‘local legend’

A MAN, aged in his 50s, has died in a house in Co Antrim.

Paddy Douglas has been named locally as the victim of the blaze, which took place at a house in the Main Street area of Ballymoney, and remembered as a “well known and liked character” in the town.

Firefighters were alerted to the inferno shortly before 7am yesterday.

Three fire appliances, two from Ballymoney and one from Coleraine and the Air Ambulance attended the blaze at the mid-terrace flat.

Douglas was rushed to hospital but sadly passed away a short time later.

The PSNI are investigating the fire but confirmed it is not being treated as deliberate.

A spokesperson said: “Police received a report of a fire shortly before 7am and attended alongside colleagues from Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service who worked to extinguish the blaze.

“This is not being treated as deliberate. Colleagues from Northern Ireland Ambulance Service conveyed one man to hospital where he was pronounced dead.”

A NIFRS spokesperson said: “Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used one jet and two hose reel jets to extinguish the fire.

“One casualty was rescued from the property and transferred to the care of NIAS. The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental.”

DUP Councillor Darryl Wilson, who had known Douglas for a number of years, told how the businessman will be missed in the town.

He said “I am deeply saddened to learn of the tragic death of Paddy Douglas following a house fire in the Main Street area of Ballymoney

“My heartfelt condolences go out to Paddy’s family, friends, and all those affected by this devastating loss.

“A well known and liked character from our town, he will be missed.”

Cllr Wilson added: “I would also like to extend my sincere thanks to the emergency services — including the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, the Police Service of Northern Ireland, and the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service — who responded swiftly and did all they could to save him.

‘GREAT CHARACTER’

“The thoughts of our entire community are with everyone impacted by this tragedy.”

Alliance Councillor in Ballymoney, Lee Kane, told how he is “deeply saddened” by the news that someone had lost their life in the blaze.

He said: “I am very sorry to hear that a man has sadly passed away following the fire on Main Street this morning. My thoughts remain with his family and loved ones at this very sad time.”

Cllr Kane added: “I would kindly ask everyone to avoid speculating about what happened, how it has happened, or what is going on.

“This can be very upsetting for those involved, who are already having a difficult time.”

Tributes online have described Paddy as a “real local legend” and “great character” who had a “heart of gold”.

Ballymoney’s Main Street was closed while emergency services tackled the blaze but it has since reopened.

The Reds want to maintain their current squad, having seen Trent Alexander-Arnold depart this summer.

Bayern showed interest in Diaz but they have been turned down by Liverpool.

It is claimed the Premier League champions have told Bayern sporting director Max Eberl that the winger is not for sale.

That has ended discussions between the two clubs.

Liverpool also rejected Barcelona’s effort to sign Diaz last month.

The Colombian confessed he had held talks with clubs, suggesting it was normal activity in the transfer window.

But he also confirmed he was in negotiations with Liverpool and waiting for the club to make him a “good offer”.

Diaz, who was thought to have a £70million asking price, said: “The market is open and we’re trying to sort out what’s best for us.

“We’re talking with other clubs. It’s the transfer window, it’s normal.

“I’m very happy at Liverpool. From day one, they’ve made me feel really welcome.

“Right now we’re in contact with them because we’re speaking with other clubs.

“I am just waiting to see what happens. If Liverpool don’t make a good offer, I still have two years left with them, I would be happy to stay there.

“It’s up to them. I am just waiting to see what happens. Everything depends on them.

“Obviously, it’s up to me to decide what’s best for the future.”

Bride’s MIL is slammed for wearing WHITE dress to her wedding – & that’s not the only part of her look that’s a ‘crime’

A BRIDE’S mother-in-law has been slammed for wearing a white, lace dress to her wedding.

But if you thought it was just the colour and style of the frock that has left people fuming, you’ll need to think again.

Wedding party photo showing the bride, groom, mother-in-law, and a child. The mother-in-law is wearing a white dress.
Reddit
A bride’s mother-in-law has been slammed for wearing a white dress to her wedding[/caption]

Posting on Reddit, on the r/weddingshaming thread, a social media user shared a snap of a family wedding picture that has gone viral online.

The anonymous poster uploaded the image under the username @NoSuspect3509 and wrote: “The bride’s MIL.

“Not a real surprise to anyone lol.”

In the snap, viewers could see the bride, wearing a floorlength white gown and the groom, who wore what appeared to be dark navy jeans, with a waistcoat.

Also in the snap was the bride’s mother-in-law, who wore a knee-length white lace dress.

Next to her is presumed to be the bride’s father-in-law, who sported denim jeans and a grey shirt.

There was also a youngster in the snap, wearing a white bridesmaid-style dress.

And not only was the groom’s mother wearing white, but she also donned a denim waistcoat, which has sent social media users wild.

Alongside the post, the user wrote: “Dressed like a bride.”

The post, which was shared just two days ago, has clearly left many totally stunned, as it has quickly racked up 2,700 likes and 234 comments.

Social media users eagerly raced to the comments to share their thoughts on the mother-in-law’s outfit, which people described as a “fashion tragedy.”

Not only this, but others cruelly described the look as “hideous” and thought it was a “crime.”

Denim over lace for a MIL dress. It looks just like it sounds, hideous

Reddit user

One person said: “I find her jean vest to be a crime in itself. If you’re going to commit a crime, only do one at a time.”

Another added: “Is the jean vest supposed to be worse than the jeans? They both look out of place and low effort!”

Wedding Guest Outfit Etiquette

If you're struggling to decided on a dress to see you through wedding season, here's a few rules on what not to wear so you don't get in trouble.

  • Folklore says that wearing red at a wedding means you slept with the groom.
  • Casual attire like jeans and flip flops should always be avoided.
  • Any colour that could be picked up as white or cream – even if it’s not.
  • Most would agree that your cleavage needs to be covered.
  • Wearing white is a massive no-no if you’re not the bride.

A third rudely commented: “She must have had one heck of a brain fart when she added that jean vest to her inappropriate white lace wedding ensemble. It’s a fashion tragedy!”

Not only this, but someone else slammed: “Denim over lace for a MIL dress. It looks just like it sounds, hideous.”

Meanwhile, another user described the look as “so ugly”, whilst one person cried: “So much denim it hurts my eyes.”

I’m 52 but look DECADES younger – I avoid too much makeup, ‘trashy’ ripped jeans & a crucial mistake my mum always made

A WOMAN who regularly gets told she looks 20 years younger has revealed her number one anti-ageing tricks – including keeping her hair long and watching Love Island.

Nerys Middleton, 52, says people often assume she’s in her early 30s – and believes it’s partly down to her long locks and youthful outlook on life.

Style-wise, she avoids florals, ripped jeans or anything that feels like she’s “trying too hard”[/caption]

The mum-of-one says she doesn’t believe in following old-school rules about what women should look like past a certain age.

“People tell me they think I’m in my 30s because of the way I am,” the fashion influencer, from North Wales, told What’s The Jam.

“I hang around with people in their 30s, so they talk about what 30‑year‑olds talk about, like Love Island.

“I say to my older friends, ‘Have you watched Love Island?’ and they’re like, ‘God no, I wouldn’t watch that.’

“It’s just little things like that.

“People also tell me I’m too old to have long hair, but when you look at people like Cindy Crawford, they all still have long hair, haven’t they?

“As long as it’s healthy and you look after it, there’s no reason it can’t be longer over 50.

“Cutting it short is an old‑fashioned thing my mum did.”

Nerys says she spends about £400 a month on vitamins, skincare and beauty treatments – and sees it as part of maintaining her health and confidence.

The mum ensures she uses retinol and vitamin C treatments alongside CO2 laser facials and hydrofacials every few months.

She’s also been getting Botox in her forehead since she was 29, wears SPF 50 every single day and doesn’t drink or smoke.

But Nerys says keeping a younger mindset is the most important part of maintaining her youthful looks.

She said: “Mostly it’s my mindset. I think if you think old, you become old.

“If you start thinking, ‘Oh God, my back’s aching, my legs are aching,’ you start dressing old, you start acting old.

“I think it helps if you have younger friends.

“Most of my friends I met through work are younger than me and we get on because I have a young mindset.

“My older friends are all married and settled – a bit fuddy-duddy.

“I spend a lot of time with young friends. We go on holidays, we go clubbing in Budapest.

“I wouldn’t go away with people my own age; they don’t like going out and partying.

“I think it’s not just about looks, it’s how you act. Because I’ve got younger friends, we talk about younger things and I spend a lot of time with them.

Three hair mistakes that are making you look older

THERE are some hair mistakes to avoid if you don't want to make yourself look older than you actually are:

  • One dimensional hair colour – it’s a good idea to visit a hairdresser to get your colour done. Using a box dye can leave you with one block colour, so steer clear.
  • Hair that’s too dark around the hairline – “Add softer, lighter tones and shades around the sides of the face to bring lift and life to your eyes; too dark a colour will do the opposite and feel very gaunt and dreary,” Jack Howard, UK colour spokesperson for L’Oreal, said.
  • Sticking to the hair colour of your youth – While you might have looked good with jet black hair in your 20s, the same may not be said now you’re in your 50s. The general rule is that your hair colour should lighten with age, just as your skin tone does.

“My older friends talk about what they’re crocheting.”

Nerys says she also religiously stays out of the sun, doesn’t drink alcohol and steers clear of junk food – all in order to feel and look her best.

Style-wise, she avoids florals, ripped jeans or anything that feels like she’s “trying too hard”.

The mum said: “It stems down to clothes and things like that.

“Try and keep make-up to a minimum and see what trends are out there; see what other women are wearing.

“But don’t follow like a sheep – try and think of trends yourself.

“I stay away from anything floral unless you have a really young face.

“Stay away from ripped jeans and ethnic shorts because they make you look like you’re trying too hard.

“It’s the balance in between. You can either look frumpy or look trashy.

“I’m trying to tell people about this balance that’s in the middle that can make you look classy, sophisticated and young.

“It annoys me when people say, ‘You don’t look 52’ and I think, no, I shouldn’t – I work hard to look the way I do. You have to.”

Fans work out ‘real reason’ for Love Island star Helena’s behaviour as she’s slammed for racy comment to Harry

FANS say they have worked out the “real reason” for Love Island star Helena’s behaviour.

It comes as the fall out from her VERY racy comment to Harry continues.

Last night’s episode was filled with high drama, which mainly revolved around Helena‘s behaviour.

Over the last week, she has made a play for both Harry AND Harrison, despite them both being coupled up with Shakira and Toni.

During this week’s Heart Rate Challenge, Helena made her desire for her ex Harry clear when she whispered a raunchy message in his ear.

Kneeling on the floor, she suggestively sucked his finger, she said: “I want to f*** you.”

Then last night, when Toni was away from the villa, Helena made a play for Harrison on the terrace and ended up snogging him.

She also appears not to care that her actions have been upsetting both Toni and Shakira.

Fans have now come up with a theory about why Helena might be behaving this way.

Some believe she may be feeling “insecure” in the villa – prompting her to act as though she “doesn’t care”.

Taking to Reddit to discuss, one said: “I think she’s still quite insecure in herself.

“I really don’t like how she’s conducted herself the past few days as it’s now caused two girls to have their feelings really hurt but what she’s doing isn’t the actions of a person who has any confidence in herself.”

While another added: “I find myself feeling sad for her that her self esteem is clearly so low that she is absolutely fine and content with being a side chick to other woman.”

After her actions during the Heart Rate Challenge, fans also thought Helena appeared smug when the results revealed that she had got Harry’s heart racing more than any other girl.

Viewers weren’t impressed by the smirk on her face while Harry’s partner Shakira dealt with the findings.

One person fumed on X: “Helena’s smug little face hearing Harry’s result. It’s getting personal at this stage between me and her.”

Another said: “Helena is just muggy. Get her out sorry.”

List of the best supermarket pyjamas to keep cool this summer including ‘super comfy’ Tesco set & prices start from £10

Collage of women's pajamas.
tesco.com, tuclothing.sainsburys.co.uk, marksandspencer.com

THE whole country is currently experiencing soaring temperatures, which is making getting a decent night’s sleep more difficult than ever.

And if you’re anything like me, I never sleep naked so finding a pair of pyjamas that won’t leave you waking up in a pool of sweat can be an absolute game changer.

Staying cool in the prime British summer can be gruelling at the best of times, but when your fan starts circulating hot air and your bedroom feels as hot as Death Valley (mine certainly has this week) then the chances of a good sleep are pretty slim.

And contrary to popular belief, according to sleep experts, sleeping naked doesn’t actually help when it comes to beating the heat.

Instead, covering up is proven to help you cool-down, so if you’re having restless nights, then now is the time to reassess your nightwear.

Think breathable, light-weight materials such as cotton, linen and silk.

Plus the fit is important too, loose cuts, shorts and sleeveless sets are best for allowing your body to regulate in temperature, rather than trapping the heat in.

Luckily, our favourite supermarket brands have got a wide range of budget-friendly pyjama sets that’ll help you get your full 8-hours, without compromising on style too.

And, you can pick them all up whilst doing the weekly food shop.

TESCO.COM
Striped Pyjama Set, £20, F&F Clothing at Tesco[/caption]

This pyjama set from F&F at Tesco is made from a lightweight cheesecloth fabric, making it ideal for hotter temperatures.

The top is loose and airy, offering a breezier feel, while providing more coverage than a cami, thanks to its cap sleeves.

Plus, the matching shorts have a comfortable elastic waistband.

They’ve earned a five-star rating online, one happy customer wrote, “Absolutely love them, cool and comfy”.

At just £20 for the set, they’re a great value buy and the classic blue and white stripe is a timeless print that’ll be stylish for many seasons to come.

And if you don’t have a superstore nearby, you can now shop F&F Clothing online too!

Gingham seems to be everywhere at the moment, and this pink check set from Marks & Spencer instantly stood out to me.

With frilled edges and tasselled drawstrings, they’re a stylish pair with extra attention to detail.

Made from pure cotton, the cami, with adjustable straps and the elasticated shorts are a great option for keeping cool on hotter nights.

And warm weather doesn’t mean compromising on style, the brand also offers several other pieces in the same check print, including a tie-front top, trousers and a night dress.

So if you love the style, why not get the whole set and wear it all year round.

Pink El Sol Pyjama Set, £22, TU at Sainsburys[/caption]

If, like me, you’re into a graphic print, then TU at Sainsbury’s has got you covered.

Sainsbury’s shoppers have been going wild and the supermarket’s graphic printed pj sets have taken social media by storm, with some TikTok videos reaching over 4.1M views.

When I saw this set, I gasped.

Not only is it perfect for a good night’s sleep, with boxy sleeves and oversized shorts but the print is so stylish that I think it could even double up as a holiday co-ord or beach cover-up.

Stay cool in more than one way and get more bang for your buck too.

One TikTok user commented “Omg giving Eleanor Bowmer vibes” and I couldn’t agree more.

And the best part is, this set is also a part of the ‘mini-me’ range so you can match with your kids too, cute!

Woman in floral pajama set.
tesco.com
Satin Floral Print Pyjama Set, was £20, now £11, F&F Clothing at Tesco[/caption]

Satin is also a great material for keeping cool at night, this set from F&F feels more grown up and sophisticated with a delicate floral print and lace detailing.

Again, the shorts have an elasticated waist and the cami has adjustable shoulder straps so you can control how loose it is.

If you love the print, it’s also available in a night-dress, plus there’s a matching robe which is not only stylish but practical for if you want to cover up a little before bed or on early mornings.

Floral print pajama set with tank top and shorts.
GEORGE.COM
Floral Pyjama Set, £14, George at ASDA[/caption]

If you want to go sleeveless but like a little more support, then this ditsy-floral set from George at Asda is for you.

The round-neck vest shape with wider straps offers more support along with the ribbed material, but it’s light enough that you’ll still keep cool.

Plus, this ditsy floral print is everywhere at the moment, with more expensive versions from the likes of Skims and Lounge, this alternative is much more budget-friendly and shoppers agree, taking to TikTok with “Run, don’t walk” comments.

And you could even double-up and wear the vest as daywear.

It also comes in a blue shade too, but it’s not online at the moment so be sure to check your local store.

Woman in Corfu pajama set.
tuclothing.sainsburys.co.uk
Printed Pyjama Set, £13, TU at Sainsburys[/caption]

This is the cheapest set of the bunch, at just £13.

Graphic t-shirts and stripes are two of summer 2025’s biggest trends, and rolled into one for this t-shirt set, which looks far more expensive than its price tag.

They’ve got a 4.3 star review with one customer raving “Lovely quality, nice lightweight fabric, cool short pyjamas”.

I’d recommend sizing up in these for a slightly oversized feel that’ll keep you from sweating throughout the night.

Printed Pyjama Shorts, £10, Body by M&S at Marks & Spencer[/caption]

Marks & Spencer have created this set with hotter nights in mind.

They’re from the brand’s Body collection and contain moisture-wicking technology which is designed to keep you cool all night long.

The scrunch tie detailing on the back is a lovely touch and like most M&S pyjama sets, there’s an alternative top and trouser, made from the same cooling material.

The shorts have a drawstring fastening on the inside, but shoppers have recommended sizing down in the top which comes up slightly large.

How to stay safe in hot weather

The UK Health Security Agency advised you follow these tips to reduce your risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke:

  • Keep out of the sun at the hottest time of the day, between 11am and 3pm
  • If you are going to do a physical activity like exercising or walking the dog, plan to do these during times of the day when it is cooler such as the morning or evening
  • Keep your home cool by closing windows and curtains in rooms that face the sun
  • If you go outside, cover up with light clothing, a hat and sunglasses and slather on sun cream
  • Drink plenty of fluids but limit booze
  • Know the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heatstroke and what to do if you or someone else has them
  • Check on family, friends and neighbours who may be at higher risk of becoming unwell, and if you are at higher risk, ask them to do the same for you
