Katie Taylor drops biggest retirement hint as she jokes ‘I don’t want to fight Amanda Serrano again’ after third win

KATIE TAYLOR admitted she “doesn’t know” if she will keep boxing – but admitted to not wanting to fight Amanda Serrano again.

The 39-year-old retained her undisputed super lightweight titles with a majority decision win over Serrano at Madison Square Garden.

It was her third win over the Puerto Rican in a row and further added to her legendary career in boxing.

As she has been after every fight in recent times, Taylor was asked if she was going to keep going or retire.

And the Bray woman responded: “I don’t know”.

However, she did rule out a fourth clash against her biggest rival, adding: “I just don’t want to fight Amanda Serrano again.

“She punches too hard! She is amazing.”

If their first two fights were white-knuckle brawls that had fans on their feet, the third was a more strategic affair.

Both landed just 70 punches apiece across the ten rounds, as they learned from their previous concussive battles.

This was reflected on the judges’ scorecards, with one ruling it 95-95 even while the other two ruled 97-93 in Taylor’s favour.

She added: “I thought I was boxing very very smart, very well. She wasn’t catching me with much tonight.

“It is always a very, very close contest between myself and Amanda.

“Sometimes it is hard to tell from each round but I just thank God that my hand was raised and I am 3-0.

“I was coming in here planning to fight disciplined and smart. I was planning on doing it the other two times but it didn’t work out like that!

“Thankfully I was able to execute the gameplan really well.

“I have a huge amount of respect for Amanda Serrano. What a warrior! Thank you so much.”

Once again, Madison Square Garden was at a fever pitch throughout the ten rounds, with Puerto Rican and Irish fans packing the New York cathedral.

Serrano – a resident of Brooklyn – was the hometown girl and was greeted to the ring with a showpiece entrance compared to Taylor’s more stoic offering.

As the action unfolded at a methodical pace, the capacity crowd made their voices heard.

Every rendition of ‘Fields of Athenroy’ were answered and then some as another kind of duel played out in the stands.

But in keeping with the rivalry itself, there was little sense of antagonism, more one of respect and acknowledgement of two fighters who had set a new standard in the squared circle.

The victor hailed: “I cant tell you how much it means, people spending their hard earned money to come over and support me and watch me.

“I love you all and I love my country. Every time I step in here, I represent my country, I represent every single one of you guys.

“Thank you so much.”

Mike Tyson goads Jake Paul over $1MILLION bet after Katie Taylor beats Amanda Serrano in epic trilogy fight

MIKE TYSON warned Jake Paul he is coming for his $1MILLION winnings… and their dinner date.

Last November, Tyson controversially came out of retirement aged 58 to face YouTuber-turned-boxer Paul.

He lost on points over eight shorter two minute rounds as 100 MILLION tuned in to watch on Netflix.

On the undercard, over 50m watched Katie Taylor’s rematch win over Amanda Serrano which came two years after her initial victory.

Paul – who promotes Serrano – put $1m (£750,000) up in a wager against Tyson – who was backing Taylor.

But Iron Mike insisted he must also be taken out for dinner by multimillionaire Paul if he won.

And his bet paid off after Taylor closed out her trilogy series with a hat-trick of wins over her great rival Serrano.

Tyson, now 59, immediately posted online: “Congrats to @KatieTaylor and @Serranosisters on the trilogy fight on Netflix.

“@jakepaul see you at dinner to collect my million!”

Taylor took a majority-decision and said: “I just want to thank Amanda Serrano as well, what an amazing fighter, we’ve made history here.

“I thought I boxed very smart, very well. She wasn’t catching me with much.

“It was obviously very, very close. Just thank God my hand was raised. I planned to come in here and be disciplined and smart.

“I executed the game plan very well. Total respect for Amanda, what a warrior. I love you all, I love my country. Thank you so much.”

Serrano, 36, said: “We tried something different, it was all about working smarter, not harder.

“I tried to keep my distance because apparently it didn’t worth the first two fights. So we tried to stick with the long punches and it just wasn’t enough.

“I don’t know, I have to go back and watch it. My team told me they think I won, I’m going to believe what they tell me.

“I was really trying to apply what they were telling me. I really want to support every single one of you for coming out and supporting me and women’s boxing.

“What an amazing night for all of us women. I’m crying at the support, thanks to all of you.

“Thank you Jake Paul, you’ve changed my life. Thank you Netflix for showcasing us warriors.

“Thank you Katie Taylor for an incredible 30 rounds, it’s been a true honour.”

‘We made history’ – Amanda Serrano breaks down in tears on ‘amazing night for women’s boxing’ after loss to Katie Taylor

AMANDA SERRANO wore her heart on her sleeve as she hailed an “amazing night for women’s boxing” following her third loss to Katie Taylor.

The 36-year-old went 0-3 against her long-time rival after another closely fought battle at Madison Square Garden.

Serrano was visibly emotional after the fight

While a cagier bout compared to their explosive previous contests, the result remained the same, with Taylor having her hand raised in a majority decision.

Speaking to Ariel Helwani after her unsuccessful attempt to win the undisputed super lightweight titles, Serrano was diplomatic.

The Puerto Rican said: “I tried something different. It was all about working smarter, not harder.

“I tried to keep my distance, try not go in there and fight with her because, apparently, it didn’t work the first two fights so tried to stick with the low punches, the 1-2s and I guess it wasn’t enough.

“One judge saw it even. I got a couple of rounds. I don’t know. I have to go back and see it. My team said I won.

“Obviously I am going to go with what my team tells me. They were telling me what to do and I was trying to apply it in the ring.”

Taylor and Serrano’s trilogy battle was the main event of an all-female card at a sold-out Madison Square Garden.

The fans in attendance made their voices heard throughout the contest, with the Brooklyn-resident fighting tears as she basked in the noise.

She added: “I want to thank you for every single one of you coming out and supporting women‘s boxing.

“It was a truly amazing night for us, for all of us women. I am crying because it is all because of you guys.

“You guys support us.

“Thanks to all of you we are able to show our skills and we are able to have this great platform for women.

“Thank you so much MVP – Nakisa [Bidarian] and Jake Paul. You changed my life. You changed all these women’s lives.

“Thank you to Netflix for allowing us women to showcase our skills, to showcase that we are warriors.

“We can fight, we can sell, and we look good doing it.

“Thank you MSG once again for allowing us to sell out your beautiful place. It is always an honour to fight here, to fight in New York.”

‘AN HONOUR’

Katie Taylor vs Amanda Serrano has been the definitive rivalry of both gladiator’s careers.

Their first encounter – an MSG headliner in April 2022 – was a Fight of the Year contender while their follow-up – at AT&T Stadium last November – exceeded those lofty expectations.

And while she will come away from the series without a win to show for it, Serrano showed respect to the Bray Bomber.

She continued: “Thank you Katie Taylor for an incredible three fights, an incredible 30 rounds.

“It has truly been an honour and it has been amazing to be with you, facing you.

“You are a true champion, a true warrior. Thank you so much.”

The full card – including prelims – saw seven title fights, a new world record, while the undercard lived up to the hype.

Ellie Scotney put on a star-making showing in the opener while Shadasia Green flipped the script to upset Savannah Marshall.

In the co-main-event Alycia Baumgardner kept hold of her undisputed junior lightweight crown despite a game challenge from Jennifer Miranda.

And Serrano was quick to acknowledge those who made the night an overwhelming success.

“To all the ladies that fought tonight, you guys did incredible.

“We did it, baby! We did it. We made history once again!

“I am proud of each and every one of you. Thank you guys and love you all.”

What TV channel is Ireland vs Portugal on? Stream, kick-off time and odds for final summer Test

IRELAND interim boss Paul O’Connel’s side face Portugal in Lisbon for their final summer Test.

Following up from last week’s 35-5 victory against Georgia in Tbilisi, Ireland face Portugal in their second and final summer Test match.

Ireland and Portugal have never faced each other in a Test rugby game before.

Os Lobos were back to back runners-up in the Europe International Championships in 2023 and 2024 behind Georgia who have won 12 of the last 13 competitions.

An inexperienced side are lining up for Ireland with so many players selected by Andy Farrell to tour Australia with the British & Irish Lions.

O’Connell’s team will be hoping to back up the good team performance against Georgia and get another positive result.

Here is everything you need to know before watching the game:

WHAT TIME IS KICK-OFF?

The match kicks-off at 7pm Irish time on Saturday July 12 in the  Estádio Nacional do Jamor, Lisbon.

WHAT TV CHANNEL IS IRELAND VS PORTUGAL ON?

The Test is being shown live on Virgin Media One with coverage starting at 6:30pm for the 7pm kick-off.

It will also be available to stream live for free on the Virgin Media player.

WHAT ARE THE ODDS?

Despite losing key players to the Lions tour in Australia and handing out three debuts, Ireland are the extremely heavy favourites at 1/41 to win the match.

A Portugal home win is set at 50/1 and the odds of a draw are 200/1 with the handicap being set at 36 points in favour of O’Connell’s side.

WHAT HAS BEEN SAID IN THE BUILD-UP?

O’Connell was forced to reshuffle his side after the team announcement due to Jamie Osborne’s call-up to the Lions Australian tour.

The Leinster centre was due to start but will now be replaced by Connacht’s Hugh Gavin to make his Ireland debut.

He is joined by two other debutants as club teammate Shayne Bolton and Munster’s Alex Kendellen have been selected to start the Test.

One of last week’s five debutants Tom Aherne earns his first start for Ireland replacing Cormac Izuchukwu to partner Darragh Murray.

Captain Craig Casey retains his place but he will be joined by a different half-back partner.

Jack Crowley has got the nod over Sam Prendergast despite the Leinster out-half’s “excellent” performance last week.

O’Connell said: “It’s a very important position, out-half, more important than it’s ever been.

“This is an opportunity for Jack to own the week, run it and get after it. The two of them are quite supportive of each other.

“It’s another opportunity to give Jack more experience. Sam was excellent last week.”
