Households have just DAYS left to claim £225 free cash for weekly food shops and bills

HOUSEHOLDS have just days left to apply for free £225 cash to cover food and other essential bills.

The help comes via the Household Support Fund, a pot of £421million which has been shared between councils in England.

Stack of British one-pound coins on British banknotes.

You might be eligible for free money through the Household Support Fund[/caption]

Local authorities then have to decide how to distribute their share of the fund, and who to.

City of Doncaster Council has been given almost £3million to share among residents in need as part of its latest round.

The authority is providing one-off payments to households who receive either housing benefit, local council tax reduction, Universal Credit which includes a housing element or means-tested free school meals.

Payments are being made to households where at least one person is aged between 16 and 64, also known as a working-age adult.

Households without children are being issued £75 payments and those with one or two dependent children £150.

Residents living in homes with three or more dependent children qualify for £225 payments.

Meanwhile, pensioner households receiving Pension Credit get £50 payments and those not eligible for the benefit get £150.

Anyone who received a payment under a previous round of the Household Support Fund should have already received their money.

These payments should have been made by December 13.

However, households who have not yet received help via the Household Support Fund or who should have qualified automatically but didn’t receive a payment will have to apply by 5pm on Friday.

The online application form can be found via www.doncaster.gov.uk/services/council-tax-benefits/household-support-fund.

Eligible households can decide whether they want the up to £225 payments paid as cheques or by bank transfer.

What about if I don’t live in Doncaster?

The latest round of the Household Support Fund opened on October 1 with councils having to allocate all funding before March 31.

Councils in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have also been given £79million between them to distribute to residents in need.

That means you could be eligible for help if you live outside of Doncaster.

Eligibility criteria varies depending on where you live, but in most cases you will receive help if you’re on benefits, a low income or classed as vulnerable.

However, because the latest round has to be allocated by the end of next month, a lot of councils may have depleted their funds.

Some local authorities have set deadlines of this Friday for households to apply for help worth up to £200 though.

Household Support Fund explained

Sun Savers Editor Lana Clements explains what you need to know about the Household Support Fund.

If you’re battling to afford energy and water bills, food or other essential items and services, the Household Support Fund can act as a vital lifeline.

The financial support is a little-known way for struggling families to get extra help with the cost of living.

Every council in England has been given a share of £421million cash by the government to distribute to local low income households.

Each local authority chooses how to pass on the support. Some offer vouchers whereas others give direct cash payments.

In many instances, the value of support is worth hundreds of pounds to individual families.

Just as the support varies between councils, so does the criteria for qualifying.

Many councils offer the help to households on selected benefits or they may base help on the level of household income.

The key is to get in touch with your local authority to see exactly what support is on offer.

And don’t delay, the scheme has been extended until April 2025 but your council may dish out their share of the Household Support Fund before this date.

Once the cash is gone, you may find they cannot provide any extra help so it’s crucial you apply as soon as possible.

This includes Calderdale Council, Canterbury Council, Leicester City Council and Portsmouth City Council.

If you’re on benefits or a low income, it’s worth checking with your local council if you’re eligible for help now.

Other help you can claim

If you’re not eligible for the Household Support Fund, you might qualify for other forms of help to cover energy bills or food.

Several energy firms offer grants to households who are struggling to pay their energy bills worth up to £2,000.

This includes British Gas, Octopus Energy and EDF.

New parents might also be eligible for free food worth up to £442 a year to cover the cost of healthy food and milk via the Healthy Start scheme.

Or, you can get food on the cheap at Trussell Trust food banks. You can find your nearest via www.trussell.org.uk/emergency-food/find-a-foodbank.

It’s also worth checking if you’re eligible for benefits if you haven’t already – billions of pounds worth is going unclaimed, according to Policy in Practice.

BT went down for thousands after customers complained of issues with emails

THOUSANDS of BT customers found themselves unable to access their emails due to an outage this afternoon.

Over 3,800 customers registered complaints on the Downdetector website, a platform that tracks service outages.

BT has gone down for thousands of customers this afternoon[/caption]

The majority of users reported issues with their email services, while 21% say encountered problems with broadband connectivity.

The disruption began shortly after 12pm, prompting dozens of frustrated customers to voice their concerns on social media.

One customers said on X (formerly Twitter): “BT have you got issues again with email getting same error as a few days ago?”

Another said: “BT email down again…”

A third said: “Glad it’s not just me!”

Those visiting email.bt.com are getting the following message: “This site can’t be reached.

“Check if there is a typo in email.bt.com.

“If spelling is correct, try running windows network diagnostics.”

This isn’t the first BT email outage in recent days.

On February 15, the service experienced a disruption affecting over 5,000 customers.

BT had resolved the issue by 1.30pm.

The outage comes with BT, which also owns EE and Plusnet, set to hike mobile and broadband tariffs by up to £3 a month from March.

The pounds and pence rise will apply to contracts taken out from April 10, 2024.

For those who took out a deal before this, a 6.4% rise will apply (3.9% and January’s inflation rate, which was 2.5%).

Plusnet will also increase its broadband price by £3 per month from the end of March for contracts taken out after July 11, 2024.

How can I check if my broadband or emails are down?

MOST broadband and mobile phone providers have dedicated pages where you can check the level of service on offer in your area.

For example, BT has its own page here – bt.com/help/check-service-status.

Plus, you can check websites such as Down Detector, which will tell you whether other people are experiencing problems with a particular company online.

How can I contact BT and am I entitled to compensation?

You can get in touch with BT by phone, post or online by visiting bt.com/help/contact-bt.

You can also speak to BT via its live chat service.

If you’re a broadband customer and the outage has left you without service, you may be entitled to compensation.

Contact BT to find out what they can offer you.

You may also have the right to leave if you’re without service for a sustained period of time.

If your problem is still unresolved after eight weeks, you can complain to an independent Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) scheme.

We have asked if BT is offering any compensation following the outage and will update this story when we have heard back.

The BT outage comes just weeks after Barclays suffered a major outage with some customers unable to access their accounts on payday.

Watch the brutal moment Victoria Coren Mitchell brands Only Connect contestants ‘idiots’ – as fans demand she apologises

ONLY Connect presenter Victoria Coren Mitchell branded some contestants as ‘idiots’ in a brutal moment.

The challenging BBC quiz launched in 2008 and has been on our screens ever since.

It consists of a tournament format where teams of three compete by finding links between apparently unconnected clues.

Monday evening’s episode marked the third place playoffs, featuring Cat Cows against Crunchers.

In the show’s opening, Victoria jokingly branded contestants “idiots” – although this did not go down well with some viewers.

The presenter said: “98% of viewers don’t even understand the questions on this show, they’re not even sure we’re broadcasting in English.

“Some people are only watching because their cat is sitting on the remote.

“So to finish third in the actual competition is a towering achievement and the people here are intellectual giants.

“They’re just idiots compared to the people in the final.”

Victoria continued by saying: “And those idiots are…

Among the contestants, some smiled at Victoria’s comment while others had more serious expressions.

Some viewers were left unamused, as one wrote on X: “Bit rude of Victoria Coren Mitchell to call them idiots.

“Can’t imagine those smiles were real. She should apologise! #OnlyConnect.”

While another penned: “Not many quizzers would laugh at being called idiots. #OnlyConnect.”

Last month, Victoria revealed she was forced to re-record an Only Connect scene – after ‘spooking’ bosses with a controversial joke.

Fans were left confused by a strange wardrobe mishap in an episode’s opening.

Victoria quipped about using AI to generate more exciting opening remarks.

She read out: “It came up with this, ‘Good evening and welcome to Connect-Enders, a world of bitter rivalries and long-running feuds. Where devious characters are forever coming and going, amid a bewildering maelstrom of Byzantine promiscuity”.

While holding up her phone, viewers could clearly see Victoria’s nails were polished in a bright red.

Hardest Quiz Show Questions

Would you know the answers to some of quizzing TV's hardest questions

  • Who Wants To Be A Millionaire – Earlier this year, fans were left outraged after what they described as the “worst” question in the show’s history. Host Jeremy Clarkson asked: “From the 2000 awards ceremony onwards, the Best Actress Oscar has never been won by a woman whose surname begins with which one of these letters?” The multiple choice answers were between G, K, M and W. In the end, and with the £32,000 safe, player Glen had to make a guess and went for G. It turned out to be correct as Nicole Kidman, Frances McDormand and Kate Winslet are among the stars who have won the Best Actress gong since 2000.
  • The 1% Club – Viewers of Lee Mack’s popular ITV show were left dumbfounded by a question that also left the players perplexed. The query went as follows: “Edna’s birthday is on the 6th of April and Jen’s birthday falls on the 15th of October, therefore Amir’s birthday must be the ‘X’ of January.” It turns out the conundrum links the numbers with its position in the sentence, so 6th is the sixth word and 15th is the fifteenth word. Therefore, Amir’s birthday is January 24th, corresponding to the 24th word in the sentence.
  • The Chase – The ITV daytime favourite left fans scratching their heads when it threw up one of the most bizarre questions to ever grace the programme. One of the questions asked the player: “Someone with a nightshade intolerance should avoid eating what?” The options were – sweetcorn, potatoes, carrots – with Steve selecting sweetcorn but the correct answer was potatoes.

However, in the next clip, she had bare nails despite wearing the same outfit.

Victoria later explained on X: “There was one where I had to record a whole different start on a different day because I made a joke about Strictly which spooked the powers that be.

“Sounds like must have been this one!”

Normally selling for £2.95, the new price of £1.49 for the 200g box of chocolates is an Easter steal.

The five egg deal is available in Aldi stores nationwide.

Fans of the Cadbury’s Eggs have flooded the HotUKDeals comments to praise the supermarket.

“These are £4 at my local Sainsbury’s so this is an amazing offer,” one revealed.

“It hurts knowing I just paid £2.95 for it a few days ago,” a third mourned.

While another joked: “Eggcellent deal. Cracking. Enjoy the yokes.”

We’ve had a look online for the cheapest box of 5 Creme Eggs and and Aldi’s is the best supermarket deal right now.

Asda has the same box for £2.98, Tesco for £3.50 and Iceland are also selling them for £3.50.

Both Morrisons and Waitrose are selling the Cadbury Eggs for £4.

Remember it is always good to shop around to make sure you are getting the cheapest deal.

The closer it gets to Easter the more likely it is that other retailers will start competing to be the cheapest in a bid to get your cash.

You can use shopping comparison tools such as Google Shopping and Trolley.co.uk to compare the cost of items across different retailers.

Aldi’s Easter chocolate price slashes

The Creme Egg deal is the latest chocolate price slash spotted at Aldi.

The budget supermarket has slashed its price for the giant 232g Cadbury Mini Eggs Easter egg.

With two Mini Eggs hidden inside the enormous egg, the sweet treat comes with an even sweeter deal as it now costs just £4.95, reduced from £5.99.

If 232g is too much for you, you can opt for the more compact 97g Cadbury Mini Eggs Chocolate Egg, which has had its price cut down to just £1.45.

Aldi’s most famous dupes

BY Laura McGuire, Consumer Reporter, for The Sun: Aldi has become famous for replicating pricey products and selling them for a fraction of the price – helping customers save some dosh.

Here is a list of some of the grocers best dupes to help you look out for the best deals the next time you hit the aisles.

Snacksters Big Stack 204g

This microwavable burger has become a fan favourite thanks to its likeness to McDonald’s signature Big Mac. It costs just £1.49, compared to the £4.00 the fast food chain is charging.

Nutoka Hazelnut Chocolate Spread 400g.

Nutella chocolate spread is a staple in many households, but it retails for a pricey £3.45. Aldi’s Nutoka costs just £1.69 and is claimed to taste identical to the chocolatey classic.

Belmont Caramelised Biscuit 200g

These sweet treats often leave shoppers doing a double take thanks to its similarity to Lotus biscuits. Aldi’s version costs just £0.69 compared to £1.20 other supermarkets charge.

The large Easter egg comes with a number of secret Mini Eggs hidden inside.

Also seeing their prices slashed to just £1.45 are the Dairy Milk Freddo and Buttons chocolate eggs.

Coming in at 12 per cent lower than their normal price, both 96g eggs are perfect options to celebrate Easter Sunday, which this year falls on April 20.

The Buttons egg naturally comes with milk chocolate buttons inside while the Freddo egg has the added bonus of Freddo Faces inside the shell.

You can find your nearest Aldi branch by using the retailer’s store locator on its website.

Of course, always remember to shop around before buying anything like this, as you might find the item cheaper elsewhere.

Websites like Price Spy let you compare prices on thousands of products to find out where it will cost you the least.

You can also have a quick scan on the Google Shopping/Product tab to see how much retailers are selling a particular item for.

How to save money at Aldi

Unlike other major grocers, Aldi does not have a rewards or point card system but that does not mean you cannot save on your shop.

Every week the store releases a list of special buys , which are unique bargain products you find online at Aldi and in store.

The store releases a fresh range of deals every Thursday and Sunday, so be sure to check regularly to see what’s new.

Meanwhile, the store also regularly sells fruit and vegetables at highly discounted prices, as part of its ‘super six’ deal.

It also does weekly saving offers on typically pricey items such as meat and fish.

How to save money at Easter

Sun Savers Editor Lana Clements shares her tips on how to save cash at Easter...

Meghan Markle needs to forget about Princess Kate & compete against Hollywood celebs for As Ever to be a success

MEGHAN Markle should focus on “competing” against Hollywood celebs instead of with Princess Kate, according to a royal expert.

While there have been claims of the Sussexes having a “rivalry” with the Prince and Princess of Wales, Newsweek’s royal editor Jack Royston claimed they need to focus on A-listers right on their doorstep.

This comes as Meghan announced the launch of her new lifestyle brand As Ever on Instagram, ahead of her Netflix cooking show, With Love, Meghan, debuting next month on March 4.

Speaking on The Sun’s Royal Exclusive show, Jack shared: “She’s fighting to get back into a space that she had largely given up.”

He added: “She is now fighting to get into a very competitive space where all the influencers live.

“All the influencers are fighting for an audience.

“And actually she would be well advised to forget any competition with Kate and William, because the people she’s going to be competing with are the other celebrities who are also trying to sell their products too.

“So that’s going to be where the real competition lies for Meghan.”

In Meghan’s post, she uploaded a video explaining she will still be selling jams, saying “my jam is my jam”, and other products.

She said: “This new chapter is an extension of what has always been my love language, beautifully weaving together everything I cherish — food, gardening, entertaining, thoughtful living, and finding joy in the everyday.”

This follows the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow’s lifestyle brand Goop, and stars such as Kourtney Kardashian’s wellness company Poosh.

Meghan has also been compared to the likes of Martha Stewart by defining herself in the lifestyle space.

The As Ever selfie-style clip was shared on her @meghan Instagram page, which she created after a hiatus from social media for a few years.

Jack pointed out: “It’s quite interesting that Instagram is her social media channel because most of her fans are on Twitter

“That is the real core of where the Sussex squad operates.

“Meghan hasn’t chosen to make Twitter her space—she’s chosen Instagram, which shows a slight bit of disconnect between her and her fan base.

“Instagram is great for celebrities, and celebrities love it. It gives them a slightly more positive space in which they can just—you know, their post is king.

“You post the picture, and anybody who comments underneath it is subordinate to your original post.

“Whereas on Twitter, no one post has priority over another. Your entry into the discussion can be any post in a thread.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex now live in the A-list enclave of Montecito, California, after stepping down as senior royals in 2020.

The area is home to the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Orlando Bloom and Jennifer Aniston.

Meghan’s logo drama

The As Ever logo, which has come under fire for being too similar to the Coat of Arms of Porreres in Majorca

Meanwhile, The Sun revealed the mayor of a small Majorcan town has accused Meg of “plagiarism” over similarities between her logo and their 14th century coat of arms.

Fans were quick to spot the As Ever design was astonishingly similar to the Coat of Arms of Porreres in Majorca.

An expert blasted the move as “another headache” for Meghan’s team, and potentially “copyright issues”.

The Sun understands that the logo for ‘As ever’ was drawn up after a “comprehensive global searches of registered trademarks”.

The logo incorporates a palm tree as a nod to the couple’s home in Montecito, while the two hummingbirds are said to be a favourite of Prince Harry’s.

The Duke claimed he saw a hummingbird after the death of Queen Elizabeth.

The shape enclosing the birds and tree was designed to “create a unique and personal emblem”.
