HOUSEHOLDS have just days left to apply for free £225 cash to cover food and other essential bills.
The help comes via the Household Support Fund, a pot of £421million which has been shared between councils in England.
GettyYou might be eligible for free money through the Household Support Fund[/caption]
Local authorities then have to decide how to distribute their share of the fund, and who to.
City of Doncaster Council has been given almost £3million to share among residents in need as part of its latest round.
The authority is providing one-off payments to households who receive either housing benefit, local council tax reduction, Universal Credit which includes a housing element or means-tested free school meals.
Payments are being made to households where at least one person is aged between 16 and 64, also known as a working-age adult.
Households without children are being issued £75 payments and those with one or two dependent children £150.
Residents living in homes with three or more dependent children qualify for £225 payments.
Meanwhile, pensioner households receiving Pension Credit get £50 payments and those not eligible for the benefit get £150.
Anyone who received a payment under a previous round of the Household Support Fund should have already received their money.
These payments should have been made by December 13.
However, households who have not yet received help via the Household Support Fund or who should have qualified automatically but didn’t receive a payment will have to apply by 5pm on Friday.
The online application form can be found via www.doncaster.gov.uk/services/council-tax-benefits/household-support-fund.
Eligible households can decide whether they want the up to £225 payments paid as cheques or by bank transfer.
What about if I don’t live in Doncaster?
The latest round of the Household Support Fund opened on October 1 with councils having to allocate all funding before March 31.
Councils in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have also been given £79million between them to distribute to residents in need.
That means you could be eligible for help if you live outside of Doncaster.
Eligibility criteria varies depending on where you live, but in most cases you will receive help if you’re on benefits, a low income or classed as vulnerable.
However, because the latest round has to be allocated by the end of next month, a lot of councils may have depleted their funds.
Sun Savers Editor Lana Clements explains what you need to know about the Household Support Fund.
If you’re battling to afford energy and water bills, food or other essential items and services, the Household Support Fund can act as a vital lifeline.
The financial support is a little-known way for struggling families to get extra help with the cost of living.
Every council in England has been given a share of £421million cash by the government to distribute to local low income households.
Each local authority chooses how to pass on the support. Some offer vouchers whereas others give direct cash payments.
In many instances, the value of support is worth hundreds of pounds to individual families.
Just as the support varies between councils, so does the criteria for qualifying.
Many councils offer the help to households on selected benefits or they may base help on the level of household income.
The key is to get in touch with your local authority to see exactly what support is on offer.
And don’t delay, the scheme has been extended until April 2025 but your council may dish out their share of the Household Support Fund before this date.
Once the cash is gone, you may find they cannot provide any extra help so it’s crucial you apply as soon as possible.
This includes Calderdale Council, Canterbury Council, Leicester City Council and Portsmouth City Council.
If you’re on benefits or a low income, it’s worth checking with your local council if you’re eligible for help now.
Other help you can claim
If you’re not eligible for the Household Support Fund, you might qualify for other forms of help to cover energybills or food.
Several energy firms offer grants to households who are struggling to pay their energy bills worth up to £2,000.
New parents might also be eligible for free food worth up to £442 a year to cover the cost of healthy food and milk via the Healthy Start scheme.
Or, you can get food on the cheap at Trussell Trust food banks. You can find your nearest via www.trussell.org.uk/emergency-food/find-a-foodbank.
It’s also worth checking if you’re eligible for benefits if you haven’t already – billions of pounds worth is going unclaimed, according to Policy in Practice.
There are three free calculators you can use to see what you might be entitled to:
The pounds and pence rise will apply to contracts taken out from April 10, 2024.
For those who took out a deal before this, a 6.4% rise will apply (3.9% and January’s inflation rate, which was 2.5%).
Plusnet will also increase its broadband price by £3 per month from the end of March for contracts taken out after July 11, 2024.
How can I check if my broadband or emails are down?
MOST broadband and mobile phone providers have dedicated pages where you can check the level of service on offer in your area.
For example, BT has its own page here – bt.com/help/check-service-status.
Plus, you can check websites such as Down Detector, which will tell you whether other people are experiencing problems with a particular company online.
How can I contact BT and am I entitled to compensation?
You can get in touch with BT by phone, post or online by visiting bt.com/help/contact-bt.
You can also speak to BT via its live chat service.
If you’re a broadband customer and the outage has left you without service, you may be entitled to compensation.
Contact BT to find out what they can offer you.
You may also have the right to leave if you’re without service for a sustained period of time.
If your problem is still unresolved after eight weeks, you can complain to an independent Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) scheme.
We have asked if BT is offering any compensation following the outage and will update this story when we have heard back.
The BT outage comes just weeks after Barclays suffered a major outage with some customers unable to access their accounts on payday.

ONLY Connect presenter Victoria Coren Mitchell branded some contestants as ‘idiots’ in a brutal moment.
The challenging BBC quiz launched in 2008 and has been on our screens ever since.

BBCCat Cows took part in the show’s third place play off[/caption]
BBCThey competed against rival team Crunchers[/caption]
It consists of a tournament format where teams of three compete by finding links between apparently unconnected clues.
Monday evening’s episode marked the third place playoffs, featuring Cat Cows against Crunchers.
In the show’s opening, Victoria jokingly branded contestants “idiots” – although this did not go down well with some viewers.
The presenter said: “98% of viewers don’t even understand the questions on this show, they’re not even sure we’re broadcasting in English.
“Some people are only watching because their cat is sitting on the remote.
“So to finish third in the actual competition is a towering achievement and the people here are intellectual giants.
“They’re just idiots compared to the people in the final.”
Victoria continued by saying: “And those idiots are…
Among the contestants, some smiled at Victoria’s comment while others had more serious expressions.
Some viewers were left unamused, as one wrote on X: “Bit rude of Victoria Coren Mitchell to call them idiots.
“Can’t imagine those smiles were real. She should apologise! #OnlyConnect.”
While another penned: “Not many quizzers would laugh at being called idiots. #OnlyConnect.”
Last month, Victoria revealed she was forced to re-record an Only Connect scene – after ‘spooking’ bosses with a controversial joke.
Fans were left confused by a strange wardrobe mishap in an episode’s opening.
Victoria quipped about using AI to generate more exciting opening remarks.
She read out: “It came up with this, ‘Good evening and welcome to Connect-Enders, a world of bitter rivalries and long-running feuds. Where devious characters are forever coming and going, amid a bewildering maelstrom of Byzantine promiscuity”.
While holding up her phone, viewers could clearly see Victoria’s nails were polished in a bright red.
Hardest Quiz Show Questions
Would you know the answers to some of quizzing TV's hardest questions
Who Wants To Be A Millionaire – Earlier this year, fans were left outraged after what they described as the “worst” question in the show’s history. Host Jeremy Clarkson asked: “From the 2000 awards ceremony onwards, the Best Actress Oscar has never been won by a woman whose surname begins with which one of these letters?” The multiple choice answers were between G, K, M and W. In the end, and with the £32,000 safe, player Glen had to make a guess and went for G. It turned out to be correct as Nicole Kidman, Frances McDormand and Kate Winslet are among the stars who have won the Best Actress gong since 2000.
The 1% Club – Viewers of Lee Mack’s popular ITV show were left dumbfounded by a question that also left the players perplexed. The query went as follows: “Edna’s birthday is on the 6th of April and Jen’s birthday falls on the 15th of October, therefore Amir’s birthday must be the ‘X’ of January.” It turns out the conundrum links the numbers with its position in the sentence, so 6th is the sixth word and 15th is the fifteenth word. Therefore, Amir’s birthday is January 24th, corresponding to the 24th word in the sentence.
The Chase – The ITV daytime favourite left fans scratching their heads when it threw up one of the most bizarre questions to ever grace the programme. One of the questions asked the player: “Someone with a nightshade intolerance should avoid eating what?” The options were – sweetcorn, potatoes, carrots – with Steve selecting sweetcorn but the correct answer was potatoes.
However, in the next clip, she had bare nails despite wearing the same outfit.
Victoria later explained on X: “There was one where I had to record a whole different start on a different day because I made a joke about Strictly which spooked the powers that be.
“Sounds like must have been this one!”
Only Connect airs on BBC Two.

MEGHAN Markle should focus on “competing” against Hollywood celebs instead of with Princess Kate, according to a royal expert.
While there have been claims of the Sussexes having a “rivalry” with the Prince and Princess of Wales, Newsweek’s royal editor Jack Royston claimed they need to focus on A-listers right on their doorstep.

Speaking on The Sun’s Royal Exclusive show, Jack shared: “She’s fighting to get back into a space that she had largely given up.”
He added: “She is now fighting to get into a very competitive space where all the influencers live.
“All the influencers are fighting for an audience.
“And actually she would be well advised to forget any competition with Kate and William, because the people she’s going to be competing with are the other celebrities who are also trying to sell their products too.
“So that’s going to be where the real competition lies for Meghan.”
In Meghan’s post, she uploaded a video explaining she will still be selling jams, saying “my jam is my jam”, and other products.
She said: “This new chapter is an extension of what has always been my love language, beautifully weaving together everything I cherish — food, gardening, entertaining, thoughtful living, and finding joy in the everyday.”
This follows the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow’s lifestyle brand Goop, and stars such as Kourtney Kardashian’s wellness company Poosh.
Meghan has also been compared to the likes of Martha Stewart by defining herself in the lifestyle space.
The As Ever selfie-style clip was shared on her @meghan Instagram page, which she created after a hiatus from social media for a few years.
Jack pointed out: “It’s quite interesting that Instagram is her social media channel because most of her fans are on Twitter.
“That is the real core of where the Sussex squad operates.
“Meghan hasn’t chosen to make Twitter her space—she’s chosen Instagram, which shows a slight bit of disconnect between her and her fan base.
