Hollywood star regretted sinking his teeth into famous role after Brian Cox

CLASSICAL music superstar André Rieu has revealed how Sir Anthony Hopkins always regretted sinking his teeth into the role of Hannibal Lecter after Brian Cox.

Succession actor Brian was the first to play the serial killer in the 1986 film Manhunter before Hopkins made the part his own five years later in Silence of the Lambs.

Brian Cox was the first actor to play Hannibal Lecter on the big screen.

The Johann Strauss Orchestra Christmas specials have become must-sees at live cinema events.

But while the Welsh superstar won his first Best Actor Oscar for role as the menacing Hannibal the Cannibal, pal André reveals Hopkins wished he’d given it a miss.

André, who got to know Hopkins after performing the actor’s classical work And The Waltz Goes On, says: “Of course his big breakthrough was as Silence of the Lambs.

“But Anthony said to me personally, ‘Why did I accept that movie?’ Because now everyone just thinks of him as Hannibal Lecter.”

The unlikely pair struck up their friendship when the Welsh superstar cold called the Dutch Composer at his office in New York.

André says: “I remember the day very well. I was told, ‘There’s a Mr Hopkins on the phone, do you want to speak with him?’ I said, ‘Yes, of course, and I immediately recognised his voice.

“He told me that he composed a waltz 50 years ago while he was still in Wales and had wanted to be a musician.

“But then he met Richard Burton, who is also from Wales, and he said to him, ‘A musician? Don’t do that, you will not earn money from being a musician. You have to be an actor, come with me to LA.’

“So that’s what he did. But, he still had his waltz in his head. And then his wife Stella saw me on television in America and she said to Anthony, ‘That’s the man who’s going to play your waltz.’ So that’s how it happened.”

The world-famous conductor and violinist was raised one of six in Holland by his father who was a conductor of the Maastricht Symphony Orchestra.

He began studying the violin at the age of five and learned to speak six languages including English, German, French, Italian and Spanish.

In 1987 he founded the Johann Strauss Orchestra with just a dozen musicians. It has grown to more than 60 on stage every night.

In that time he has sold more than 40million albums and is regularly listed in Billboard’s Top 25 world tours, raking in over £40million from his live shows a year.

But André is on a lifelong mission to rid classical music of its elitist image with his shows, including his Christmas Cinema Event Success where his annual Maastricht concerts are broadcast live to cinemas around the world.

He explains: “My audiences love to sing along, dance in the aisles and kiss their partners.

“Everyone is welcome to come to my concerts, no matter what education or age.

“I also try to combine classical music with a lot of humour and interaction with the audience. Classical music can be fun – believe me.”

But when André performs at Glasgow’s Hydro on April 5 next year (2025), he will bring with him teen singing sensation Emma Kok who in 2023 won the Dutch TV talent show The Voice Kids.

Dad-of-two André, who lives in his hometown Maastricht with wife Marjorie of 48 years, says: “Emma is coming to Scotland with me for the first time.

“The first time I heard her was very simple, we were touring in America and my son Pierre threw his telephone on my make-up table and said, ‘Listen to this.’

“I listened to her singing her winning song on The Voice Kids in Holland. I was flabbergasted and said, ‘Please get her into my studio as soon as possible – I want to hear her live.’

“And then when I did I was even more impressed and I asked Emma, ‘Do you want to work with me?’ And she and her family said yes.”

It has been a masterstroke from the maestro with the 16-year-old’s powerful performances regularly reducing the audience to tears.

André says: “I tell you, everywhere where she sings with us, people are crying.

“And it is because of her voice, her magnificent voice, her performing, her whole being.

“She is a talent, she is a magnificent talent and I’m so glad that I can be her musical father, not her real father but her musical father.

“And Emma accepts everything I tell her and it’s really great to work with someone so hungry to learn.”

He adds: “But we click on stage because we both perform with our hearts. When I play I give everything I have. I cannot simulate.”

But although new talent like Emma bring “fresh energy” to his orchestra, the 75-year-old maintains he still has the stamina to match the youngsters.

He explains: “I’m now the oldest in the orchestra as we have brought in a lot of fresh blood in recent years.

“But I can tell you we have just come from South America where I was the most energetic of all. I am surrounded by all these young people who are moaning, ‘I have a cold, I’m tired’ and I’m like ‘come on, move it’.”

Although André drives his troops hard he also rewards them with lavish parties.

He says: “I have 125 people on my payroll and some freelance people too who have been working with me for years.

“So for my 75th birthday we went to the Fairytale Forest in Holland for all the staff, freelancers, their family and children – there were 500 people there and we all had a fantastic weekend.”

But despite being well into his 70s, André has no intentions of hanging his baton anytime soon.

He jokes: “I’m 75 now and have been travelling the world for over 35 years. But I’m going to live until I’m over 100 so I am a little bit more than halfway now.”

However long André lives he will stick to his vow never to watch his pal Sir Anthony, 86, star as Hannibal the Cannibal.

He adds: “I think I would be scared of Anthony if I saw those movies. So I have told him that I will never watch them. I think it is better this way for our friendship.”

I live a millionaire’s lifestyle in the Caribbean & don’t pay a penny for rent, bills or food – I’m always on the beach

A CRUISE ship performer shared an insight into her daily life on board a Caribbean excursion.

The dancer broke down her limited expenses, revealing she can go days on end without spending a single penny.

Cruise ship performer Krista Jocelyn shared an insight into her expenses on board[/caption]

In her viral video, YouTuber Krista Jocelyn showed her 44,000 subscribers what her life looks like on board.

She explained that the “top perk” of her unique job is “getting to save a lot of the money” she makes.

Krista revealed that she and her co-workers have “very limited expenses” while on board.

She told her audience that her cabin, water, electricity, and even her laundry is all free of charge, revealing that the expenses don’t even come out of her pay cheque.

“So we basically have no bills when we’re on board,” the YouTuber explained.

According to the content creator, if you want to spend nothing, you can.

She added that she had only spent $5 (£4) by the sixth day of her excursion while filming.

However, she revealed that her spending can vary from week to week, estimating that on average she spends about $200 (£160) each per cruise.

Most of this goes towards food when she is on land for the day as the crew mess hall provides free meals for staff.

Once a week, Krista visits a specialty restaurant on-board as the canteen rotation can “get a little bit boring”.

With options including Italian, a steakhouse, sushi, a sports bar, and Johnny Rockets, she makes the most of her 20% staff discount.

She estimated that she spends $50 (£40) of her weekly budget on dining out.

Krista revealed that most crew members’ biggest expense is Wi-Fi, which costs $3.99 (£3.15) per hour on board.

Staff members are given two free hours each week but the dancer is able to avail of even more after taken a second job at the Wi-Fi desk.

She can enjoy between 300 to 600 minutes of free Wi-Fi each week.

Pros and cons of going on a cruise ship

Whether you're considering a long holiday, working remotely or even living on board a cruise ship for a few months or years, here are the pros and cons from a former cruise shipper.

Pros

  • Travel the world, learn and experience new cultures
  • Meet new people
  • Don’t have to think or worry about room cleaning, or food

Cons

  • Internet connection can be painfully slow and expensive
  • Limited luggage allowance so have to wear the same clothes on rotation
  • Having no control of where the ship would go next and the possibility of visiting the same ports
  • Having the same onboard entertainment, on-demand movies, and little choice of TV channels
  • No fresh newspapers or new books unless someone adds them to the library
  • Relatively the same food week after week unless major menu changes occur seasonally.
  • Occasional rough seas, bad weather and viral outbreaks while inboard.

Krista also saves significantly with her free gym membership, which she said would often cost her up to $50 (£40) a month at home.

As a performer, she is required to spend at least five hours in the gym each week to maintain her stamina and physique for shows.

She also spends a small amount on snacks and bottled water in the on board tuck shop and on drinks at the “cheap” staff bar.

And on her days off, Krista has been able to explore everywhere from Europe to the Caribbean.

On her current excursion, the locations alternate across tropical islands including Grand Cayman, St. Thomas, San Juan, Bahamas, Jamaica, and Coco Cay.

“Most days of the are spent grabbing lunch off of the ship or visiting a nearby beach,” Krista told her subscribers.

YouTube users shared their thoughts on her lifestyle in the comments section.

“I worked as a safety petty officer on the Pacific Princess, back in 2000-2001,” wrote one viewer.

“The only thing I had to pay for was $8 (£6) per month for healthcare. That was it. I did however buy a lot of rounds in the crew bar.”

“It’s good to save but also have some fun!” said another follower.

“Krista, it’s your hard-earned money, you spend it however you please. You only live once, enjoy every moment of it that you can,” commented a third person.

Son of legendary music star Sir Rod Stewart, Sean is attending the same facility close friend Scott Disick once attended[/caption]

It comes just months after Sean split from his wife Jody Weintraub, and started dating Julia Stambler, the ex-girlfriend of Charlie Sheen.

Sean is currently housed in the Cliffside Malibu rehabilitation facility – where his friend Scott Disick attended treatment sessions for his own issues.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, an insider said: ‘Sean is in rehab for pill addiction.’

‘He’s had a long history of drug addiction, and he decided to get help when he was that he was falling off the deep end again.’

His family reportedly held an intervention for Sean because they were worried about his condition.

The insider also said that Sir Rod is proud of his son for checking into rehab, and admitting that he needs help to deal with his issues.

The stunning facility looks directly onto the Pacific Ocean, and features an outdoor pool and gym, and treats patients to healthy and organic meals provided by a chef.

Each room is fitted with its own TV set, and yoga, walks, acupuncture, equine therapy, and group counselling are all on offer.

Sean previously told the Daily Mail that his addiction began when he was just 13-years-old.

He revealed that he began drinking while he was a student at Beverly Hills High School, before moving on to more dangerous drugs such as ecstasy and heroin.

In 2012, he said: ‘I would go to parties at that age and drink and smoke cannabis and cigarettes.’

‘It was very easy for me to get drugs.’

I would just walk into a party and someone would hand me them. I hardly ever paid for them.’

He also revealed that he got badly addicted to the psychedelic drug, ecstasy from a very young age.

He then began taking prescription pills, cocaine, and eventually, heroin.

Sean was first sent to Meadows, a famous treatment centre in Arizona, having been badly addicted to drugs at the age of 19.

In 2001, he overdosed, and was jailed for 90 days after pleading no contest to a charge of assault with a deadly weapon on then 19-year old student, Jason Rogland.

Man Utd rivals ‘looking to cash in on their financial misery by buying out sell-on clauses of stars sold by the club’

SEVERAL CLUBS are reportedly looking to buy Manchester United’s sell-on clauses for players that have already left Old Trafford.

The Red Devils have endured a miserable campaign so far and currently sit 15th in the Premier League table.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Ineos CEO and Manchester United shareholder.

Amid the club’s disappointing form on the pitch, United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has been desperately trying to save money behind the scenes.

The billionaire has already made 250 employees redundant, with up to 200 more to follow in the coming weeks.

He is also set to scrap free lunches for staff members at Old Trafford and reduce food options for those at Carrington to just soup and sandwiches.

Ratcliffe could now be handed another way of generating some cash involving players who are no longer at United.

The Telegraph has claimed that multiple clubs are now considering the possibility of buying sell-on clauses.

Man Utd have put sell-on clauses into several transfers over the last few years.

Facundo Pellistri was sold to Panathinaikos for around £6.8million last summer with a 45 per cent sell-on clause, meaning the Red Devils will receive almost half of the fee he is next sold for.

Similarly, they negotiated a 50 per cent sell-on clause when finalising Hannibal Mejbri‘s move to Burnley, although that will reduce over time.

Scott McTominay was let go for £25m plus a 10 per cent sell-on clause.

And striker Mason Greenwood has a reported 50 per cent sell-on clause in his Marseille contract.

Should Man Utd decide to cash-in on the clauses now, it would see them profit instantly.

It could be a huge positive for Ratcliffe and Co given the club’s poor financial situation.

Several players have enjoyed a resurgence in form after leaving Man Utd.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka has impressed since joining West Ham, while McTominay has become a fan-favourite at Napoli.

Furthermore, Greenwood has recorded 19 goal contributions in 25 appearances for Marseille.

As a result, the striker has attracted some interest from the likes of Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain in recent months.

Popular diet can slash your risk of cancer – the 10 ingredients to add to your shopping list today

FOLLOWING a popular diet could slash your risk of several cancers linked to obesity, a study suggests.

Being overweight or obese can make you more likely to develop 13 different types of the disease, including bowel and liver cancer.

Scientists found women who followed a Mediterranean diet lived longer
Researchers linked a Mediterranean diet to a lower risk of obesity-related cancers

Following the Mediterranean diet may slightly lower the risk of these cancers, research published in JAMA Network Open showed.

It found people who stuck to the popular diet – which prioritises veggies, pulses, healthy fats and olive oil – had a 6 per cent lower risk of risk developing obesity-linked cancers.

Though sticking to healthy weight can boost your odds against cancer, researchers said the cancer-busting benefits of the Mediterranean diet seemed to extend beyond weight loss.

Responding to the findings, Professor Franklin Joseph, consultant physician in general internal medicine and head of Dr Frank’s clinic, told The Sun: “The Mediterranean diet isn’t just a way of eating – it’s a scientifically backed approach to long-term health.

“This latest study reinforces what we’ve known for years: a diet rich in whole, unprocessed foods can significantly lower the risk of obesity-related cancers.

“What’s particularly interesting is that these benefits exist independent of weight loss, suggesting that the nutrients in Mediterranean foods actively help protect against cancer at a cellular level.”

Researchers examined the diet and health information of over 450,000 participants aged 35 to 70 who lived in Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and
the UK.

Researchers noted the amount of vegetables, legumes, fruits,
nuts and seeds, dairy products, cereals, meat, fish and fats participants consumed, estimating their total calorie intake.

“This cohort study found that greater adherence to the Mediterranean diet was associated with a modestly reduced risk of 6 per cent of obesity-related cancer,” they wrote.

Specifically, the veggie-rich diet seemed to lower the risk of bowel, liver and kidney cancer.

Following a Mediterranean diet some of the time – what researchers described as “medium adherence” – was also associated with a slightly lower risk of disease.

This group of participants had a slightly lower risk of developing cancer of the oesophagus.

“Generally, we found a lower risk of incident obesity-related cancer for moderate intake of alcohol and lower meat consumption,” researchers said.

“Adherence to the Mediterranean diet has been linked with reduced [fat around the abdomen], lower BMI, and less weight gain,” they went.

This supported researchers’ theory that reduced cancer risk among Mediterranean diet followers may be linked to their BMI and waist-to-hip ratio.

“However, our findings suggest that the observed protective
association with obesity-related cancers may involve other mechanisms,” they noted.

Cancers linked to obesity

Being overweight or obese is the second biggest cause of cancer in the UK, Cancer Research UK says.

If you are overweight you are more likely to get cancer than if you are a healthy weight.

Being overweight doesn’t mean that you’ll definitely develop cancer. But the risk is higher the more overweight you are and the longer you are overweight for.

Extra fat in the body doesn’t just sit there, it’s active and send out signals to the rest of your body.

These signals can tell cells in our body to divide more often, which can lead to cancer.

The signals released by fat cells can affect:

  • Growth hormones – too much body fat can cause levels of growth hormones to rise, which tells cells to divide more often. This raises the chance that cancer cells will develop.

  • Inflammation – immune cells go to areas of the body where there are lots of fat cells. This can lead to inflammation, which causes cells to divide quicker. Over time, this can increase the risk of cancer.

  • Sex hormones – after the menopause, fat cells produce the hormone oestrogen. This hormone can make cells in the breast and womb divide more often, which increases the risk of cancer developing.

Cancer types linked to obesity

Research has linked obesity to 13 different types of cancer:

  • Breast and bowel (two of the most common cancer types)
  • Pancreatic, oesophageal and gallbladder (three of the hardest to treat cancers)
  • Womb and ovarian
  • Kidney, liver and upper stomach
  • Myeloma (a type of blood cancer)
  • Meningioma (a type of brain tumour)
  • Thyroid

Source: CRUK

Study authors suggested the high fibre content of the diet may help counteract harmful cancerous compounds in processed meats.

People following the eating plan also tend to have lower blood sugar, cholesterol and levels of inflammation, they added.

Researchers concluded: “More studies are needed to better understand the mechanisms through which higher adherence to the Mediterranean diet might potentially reduce cancer risk.”

Previous research has linked the diet to a 23 per cent lower risk of early death.

Eat the Mediterranean way

The traditional Mediterranean diet is based on foods available in countries that border the Mediterranean sea.

It’s centred on plant-based foods and limits red meat, processed meats, and packaged foods.

Looking to make your meals a bit more Mediterranean?

Prof Joseph and Lucy Diamond, registered Dietitian and Clinical director for innovation at Oviva, spoke to The Sun about how you can go about doing that.

Prof Joseph said: “The Mediterranean diet is based on fresh, nutrient-dense ingredients packed with antioxidants, healthy fats, and fibre.”

Meanwhile, Lucy noted: “While this diet isn’t a guarantee against cancer, it’s a practical and enjoyable approach to eating that may offer some protection while supporting weight management goals and overall health.”

Here are a few essential ingredients to add to your shopping list:

1. Olive oil

Proj Joseph described olive oil as “the foundation of the diet”.

He said it’s “rich in monounsaturated fats and polyphenols that fight inflammation and oxidative stress”.

Lucy noted that olive oil should be your “primary fat source”.

“It’s delicious in salad dressings, for roasting veggies and for dipping bread.”

2. Fatty fish

To eat the Mediterranean way, you should be looking to increase your intake of fatty fish.

This includes salmon, sardines, and mackerel provide omega-3 fatty acids, which have anti-inflammatory properties, support heart health and may help reduce cancer risk.

3. Beans

Chickpeas, lentils, and beans offer will give you a dose of protein without the need for meat.

They’re also packed with fibre, keeping digestion healthy and blood sugar stable.

At the same time, you should be aiming to reduce the amount of processed meat you eat – such as as sausages, bacon and salami, as well as red meat.

“Red meat and processed meats are consistently associated with an increased cancer risk,” Lucy noted.

4. Colourful veggies

“Make colourful vegetables the star of your plate,” Lucy said.

“Especially tomatoes, peppers, and leafy greens, which contain cancer-fighting antioxidants.”

Spinach, kale and aubergines are also full of vitamins and plant compounds that boost immunity, Prof Joseph added.

5. Whole grains

When adding a carby element to your plate, choose whole grain varieties like brown bread and whole wheat pasta, as they’ll provide more nutrients and fibre.

Bulgur wheat and brown rice will also give your a slow and steady release in energy and support gut health.

You should be aiming to eat 30g a day, whether that’s through beans, whole grains, fruit or veg.

6. Nuts and seeds

For a healthy snack, choose nuts and seeds. A small handful should keep you satisfied, Lucy said.

“Almonds, walnuts, and flaxseeds are loaded with healthy fats, fibre, and antioxidants linked to lower inflammation,” Prof Joseph added.

7. Fruit

Fresh fruits are another excellent snack to choose from, particularly berries, citrus fruit like oranges and pomegranates, which are packed with vitamin C and other protective compounds.

8. Herbs and spices

Season your meals with herbs and spices like rosemary, oregano, and garlic, as they contain beneficial phytonutrients.

9. Yoghurt

You might want to add some fermented dairy to your diet too.

This includes Greek yoghurt and aged cheeses, which are packed with probiotics that support gut health and immunity.

10. Red wine

You can enjoy a bit of red wine, as long as it’s in moderation.

“Rich in polyphenols like resveratrol, red wine may offer some protective benefits when enjoyed sensibly,” Prof Joseph said.

He said: “Eating well shouldn’t feel restrictive.

“The Mediterranean diet is about enjoying real, flavourful foods that nourish your body.

“Small changes – like swapping butter for olive oil or adding more vegetables to your plate – can have a lasting impact on your health.

“It’s a diet that’s as delicious as it is beneficial.”
