People are just realising Wimbledon tennis balls become homes for MICE thanks to genius initiative

WIMBLEDON tennis balls have a second life after being used at the All England Club.

Around 55,000 balls are expected to be used at this year’s championship.

And although some will continue to be used for their intended purpose, many more will be upcycled and used as homes for mice.

In partnership with the Wildlife Trust in Avon, Glamorgan and Northumberland, balls have been donated to protect harvest mice.

The Wimbledon balls are modified by cutting small openings which allow the thumb-sized mice to burrow into.

They are then placed in tall grass, which is where the mice are often found, or on mounted on poles to help them escape predators.

The balls also protect the mice from extreme weather conditions.

The initiative began in 2000 as harvest mice became endangered following the loss of their habitat as a result of farming and flooding.

Fans love the scheme with one saying: “Wonderful idea❣

Another added: “Love this.”

‘One happy girl’ – Mayo GAA star gets engaged to stunning partner while on sun-kissed holiday

MAYO midfielder Matthew Ruane popped the question to partner Moya Mannion while holidaying in Majorca, Spain.

The happy couple got engaged on Sunday with them announcing their news in a joint-Instagram post on Tuesday.

Several of Ruane’s past and present inter-county teammates were among their many well-wishers.

Former two-time All-Star goalkeeper Rob Hennelly hailed: “So happy for ye both!”

Aidan O’Shea, who’s long soldiered alongside Ruane in the middle of the park, added: “Greats News!! Massive congrats to you both”

Lee Keegan and Diarmuid O’Connor also passed on their best as did Galway full-forward Damien Comer, Limerick hurler Dan Morrissey and Cork camogie’s Libby Coppinger.

Love has been in the air for Mayo footballers lately as only last week Mayo captain Paddy Durcan got down on one knee for partner Alannah O’Brien.

That was a double celebration in their case as it was also their first night in their new house.

Alannah reflected afterwards: “What a way to top off our first night in our new home. Here’s to forever with my best friend.”

The 2025 inter-county campaign saw Durcan, 30, make his long-awaited return after suffering a torn cruciate ligament last year.

While his return to the pitch was a welcome boost to their on-pitch fortunes, it wound up being another frustrating Championship for the Green and Red.

After putting themselves in a hole by losing at home to Cavan, they looked on the brink of scrapping qualification from their All-Ireland group when they equalised on 70 minutes versus Donegal.

However, in a cruel twist of fate even by the standards of Mayo football over the past decade or so, they conceded a winning point with the last kick of the game.

And the off-season in Mayo never passes without some sort of circus.

The debrief after their fruitless 2023 and 2024 campaigns saw in-depth reviews go on for months, much to the frustration of their demanding supporters.

The most worrying aspect of their season was of course that Kevin McStay suffered a health scare in May which forced him to stand aside as boss.

Last week also saw McStay permanently ‘relieved’ from his role by the county board.

The cold nature of the statement has been widely derided with SunSport’s Graham Geraghty devoting a column to McStay’s shabby treatment.

Emma Kenny, 52, told her followers she had given birth to a daughter named Ella-Grey.

She gushed how the newborn, who was seen wrapped up in a white towel and pink knit hat, was “as wonderful as I’d imagined she’d be.”

Yet amid the joy at the baby girl making her mark in the world, Emma told how her arrival was just weeks after her mum passed away.

Writing alongside a reel that featured a series of snaps of Ella-Grey, including one of her holding the newborn just moments after giving birth, Emma wrote: “Say hi Ella-Grey And then there were six!

“Say hello Ella-Grey! This morning she entered the world with a loud cry.

“The Royal Bolton Hospital have been fantastic and ensured that we have both been looked after brilliantly.”

Opening up on her bittersweet feeling, Emma continued: “I lost my mum suddenly a couple of weeks back, and it’s really strange knowing that neither of my babies will get to know their grandparents…

“They would have loved them as my older boys did before them.”

Emma then went on to gush over her newborn and added: “Ella-Grey has been lying on me all day, she latched on immediately and is as wonderful as I imagined she would be… but like her sister… I am blindsided that she is a girl.

“So, now I have two very big boys of 20 and 22, and two tiny girls aged 1 day and 23 months.”

Emma gave birth to her eldest daughter back in 2023, after keeping her third pregnancy a secret.

At the time, she said she had “waited 10 years” for the joyous occasion.

In the caption at the time, she revealed that her little bundle of joy is named Etta-Blue.

Emma, who is best known for her appearances on This Morning as the ITV1 show’s resident psychologist, also has two sons with her ex-husband – Tyde and Evan.

In her recent post after her family expansion she told how her happiness at becoming a mum again later in life comes following the tragic death of her father in 2019, who took his own life.

Emma told fans that she never thought she would experience happiness again following her sad loss.

In her emotional upload she wrote: “When my dad took his life in 2019, I never thought I would be happy again, but in truth I couldn’t have been more wrong, I’ve learnt we are more than simply built to withstand suffering, we are programmed to learn, and grow, and develop courage through it.

“I cannot change what happened but I can embrace the gifts that grief brought me.”

Emma signed off the post with a message of thanks to her followers for helping her through the difficult times and wrote: “Thank you to all of you who have spent years supporting me.”

Emma’s celebrity friends and followers were quick to offer their messages of congratulations to the TV star following her news.

Former Coronation Street star Catherine Tyldsley commented: “Huge congratulations xx.”

Loose Women anchor Ruth Langsford then gushed: “Congratulations both.”

Atomic Kitten singer Natasha Hamilton penned: “So happy for you Emma – what a beautiful little girl huge congratulations to you all xxx.”

Emma’s baby news comes nearly two years after she gave birth to a baby girl following a secret pregnancy.

At the time, the true crime podcast star shared her joy at giving birth aged 50 following ten years of struggling to fall pregnant with her husband Pete Skywalker.

It comes two weeks after it was revealed their marriage was back on track[/caption]

And now insiders said he’d flown Annie over to Ibiza for a holiday as a couple, with the pair joining his pal Riyad Mahrez and his wife Taylor Ward on a yacht.

“Kyle is so pleased things are back on track with Annie he wanted to treat her,” a source said.

“Their family trip to America was brilliant but he wanted to make sure he had some alone time with Annie so booked them a trip to Ibiza.

“They have been with Riyad and Taylor, as well as a wider group of friends, there and hired a luxury yacht.

“Kyle is really focused on getting fit and staying healthy ahead of the football season starting so this is perfect for him.

“He can relax and rejuvenate – and he’s having quality time with Annie which is so special to him, especially after the last couple of years.”

The Sun revealed back in March that relations between the pair had thawed.

A source close to the couple told us Kyle and Annie had reconciled and were working through their issues.

They added: “They’re in the best position they’ve ever been and are looking to the future.”

They couple met when Annie was 15 and they married in November 2021.

But their relationship fell apart last January after Kyle was exposed for fathering a second child with Lauryn Goodman.

Our insider added: “Kyle and Annie are trying to move forward with their lives and after everything that has happened in the past, things are going well between them.

“Kyle is feeling in great form and is excited about a return to football.”

The former Man City star is waiting to sign a fresh deal after leaving AC Milan.
