Evil neighbour invited me to a BBQ then drugged & raped me – he laughed as I tried to push him off, then attacked again

AS HER neighbour offered Juanita Greenhalph a cup of tea during a get together BBQ, she was touched by the friendly gesture.

Taking her first sip the grandmother had no idea of the horrific ordeal that would follow just an hour later.

But Murambakanda raped Juanita before robbing her of £650[/caption]

As she carried on drinking Juanita, 62, felt ‘whoozy’ and her vision blurred having been unknowingly spiked by her neighbour Meynard Murambakanda.

When she next opened her eyes, Murambakanda raped her twice after spiking her tea and after the horrific attack, he stole money out of her bank account.

Murambakanda, 34, was sentenced to eight years and now Juanita has waived her right to anonymity to share her story.

Juanita, a retiree who used to work as a barmaid, says: “When I was invited to Meynard’s BBQ I was excited as I didn’t usually socialise or leave the house.

“It was a beautiful sunny day with all the neighbours but it turned into the worst day of my life.

“I am now haunted by the memory of accepting that cup of tea, and how stupid I’d been.

“But I now know none of it was my fault. He’s a monster who preyed on me.”

In 2020, Juanita, from Manchester, was 58 and living at home alone. She was retired and struggling with type 2 diabetes and a bad back.

Her four children, all in their 30s and 40s, had left the nest years before.

She says: “Their dad and I divorced in 2003 and I’d been alone for the past 17 years.

“I barely left the house. I only left to get food from the shops.

“Every morning, I had a carer visit to give me my medication and help me with breakfast.

“My life had become very lonely.”

In May that year, she got chatting to one of her neighbours, Murambakanda. They’d seen each-other but had never spoken.

She says: “I was sprawled out on my deck chair in my front garden when Meynard walked past again.

“This time he stopped and introduced himself. He told me he lived with his mother, around the corner.

“The next day, he came back and chatted again. He seemed very sweet.

“Admittedly, I never thought I’d find love again. But Meynard’s attention made me feel good inside. It had been so long.

Juanita says the attack left her too afraid to leave her home[/caption]

“The next day he came for a walk down the canal with me, my daughter, her partner and my granddaughter.

“I was glad to have made a new friend.

“But as Meynard was so interested in my life, I wondered if there was more between us.

“It had been years since I’d been with a man, I felt special.”

Later that week, Murambakanda hosted a neighbourhood BBQ in his back-garden. To Juanita’s delight, he invited her to join.

She says: “I was excited as I never left the house. He took me into the back garden and I recognised lots of my neighbours and locals.

“I sat with them and we all had a nice catch up. Whilst Meynard did the BBQ and kept disappearing inside.

I pleaded with him to stop, but he laughed and continue

Juanita Greenhalph

“Due to my diabetes meds, I hadn’t drank alcohol for nine years. So I stuck to water.”

After a few hours, Murambakanda ran out of meat for the BBQ and Juanita kindly offered to walk to Lidl to get more.

Murambakanda insisted on joining her, and as she paid for the extra steaks and sausages, he helped her with her bags.

Juanita says: “Back at the BBQ, Meynard offered me a cup of tea, my thought was, ‘how sweet of him.’

“I thanked him, and he made me a nice brew.”

But just an hour after drinking her tea, Juanita began to feel woozy.

“I told him I felt very tired and my eyes were heavy,” she recalls.

“He told me I should have a lay down, before helping me out of the garden to go inside.

“My vision went very blurry, then everything went black.

“When I next opened my eyes, I was on Meynard’s bed. He was on top of me, raping me.

“I pleaded with him to stop, but he laughed and continued. My eyes were still droopy and I drifted off again.

“When I next woke, he flipped me over and raped me from behind. I tried to stop him, but I lost consciousness again.”

Juanita woke up again to Murambakanda holding a wet towel on her head, telling her that she was sweating.

She fell unconscious again, and woke up in a silent house the next morning, realising Murambakanda and the neighbours were gone.

Juanita says: “I broke down in tears and rang my daughter. I begged her to come pick me up.

How to report a sexual assault

“Half an hour later she came with her partner. I was sobbing uncontrollably. I had agonising pain below, my daughter was horrified.”

Back at Juanita’s home, her daughter realised that her mum’s bank card was missing.

“She went onto my banking app and saw £650 had been withdrawn,” Juanita says.

“I realised Meynard must’ve seen my pin number when I bought the meats at Lidl. He stole my money.

“I pulled down my top and showed my daughter my bruises. I told her he drugged me with a cup of tea and raped me.

“I was hysterical. I also felt like it was all my fault. I felt stupid.”

Juanita’s daughter helped her ring the police and 20 minutes later, two police officers arrived.

Whilst Juanita was taken to the rape clinic to have swabs taken, police couldn’t find Murambakanda.

Two weeks later, they tracked him down at his house, and was arrested.

Whenever I thought I could no longer live with such pain, I looked at photos of my grandkids. They kept me alive

Juanita Greenhalph

Juanita says: “He denied seeing me that day but police had CCTV footage of us together at the shops, and the bank confirmed he’d withdrawn the money.

“Although Meynard was charged, and remanded, I lived in fear every day after that.

“Every time I looked out my bedroom window, I thought I saw him in the bushes, watching me.

“I couldn’t sleep. I ended up moving my bed from the window, and keeping my curtains shut.

“Months later my daughter gave birth to my second grandchild but I was so depressed I didn’t meet her.

“Due to my PTSD, I missed the first year of my new granddaughter’s life. I shut my family out.

“But, whenever I thought I could no longer live with such pain, I looked at photos of my grandkids. They kept me alive.”

In March 2023, Meynard Murambakanda, now 34, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to two counts of rape against at Manchester Crown Court.

Juanita says: “I was too terrified to see him again, I stayed away from court.

“But my case officer visited me, to break the news of his eight year sentence. The court also ordered Meynard to be deported back to Africa after his sentence.

“I burst into tears. For such a long time, I lived in fear and shame.

“Meynard knew I was very vulnerable when we met and he targeted me, taking my kindness for weakness.

“Now, I’m trying to make it up to my kids and grandkids for lost time. And I’m getting my strength back, day by day.

“If you have been assaulted, please tell someone. There will be people there to help you. It’s never your fault.”

The Chase’s biggest ever prize pots – but how many nail-biting questions could you get right?

THE CHASE has the potential to see contestants win some serious big money prizes…. if you can beat those pesky chasers, that is.

With quizmasters trying to stop hopefuls in their tracks, it takes some serious skill in order to come out on top on the ITV gameshow.

Bradley Walsh, host of The Chase, on set.
Not known, clear with picture desk

But there have been times when people have managed it, taking home some incredible life-changing amounts – whether for themselves or for charity.

Here are some of the biggest wins ever on the show, and how they managed to do it.

But the question is – would you have known the answers? You’ll find all the answers at the bottom of this article.

1. Celebrity Top Spot – £160,000

ITV
Rachel and Kirsty hold the record for the biggest win[/caption]

Appearing for Soccer Aid in 2018, Kirsty Gallacher and Rachel Riley unwittingly made The Chase history in the process.

The pair made it to the final chase against Shaun ‘The Dark Destroyer’ Wallace, and seemed on the backfoot with only 16 points for him to beat.

However, soon they found themselves clawing it back thanks to a combination of wrong answers from Wallace and correct pushbacks, giving them the upper hand.

In the dying seconds of the game, Shaun was asked: “Which ex formula one driver is a multiple Paralympic champion?”

The Chaser didn’t know, and then Rachel gave the incorrect answer as David Weir.

In the end, Shaun only made it 11 spaces – and the pair took home the biggest prize packet ever given out in the show’s history. It’s still not been beaten.

2. Tense Final Chase – £100,000

Duo Karen and Ian took home a massive £50,000 each after beating The Sinnerman[/caption]

Duo Karen and Ian were the last two contestants standing at the final chase when they appeared on the show in 2024 – and it proved to be a nailbiter.

Throughout the final chase, Paul ‘The Sinnerman’ Sinha was extremely close behind them, with pushbacks meaning he came incredibly near beating them.

However, one last second slip-up (literally, with one second remaining) gave them the upper hand, and between them they took home a massive £100,000 prize between them.

Paul slipped up on this question: “Lesley Manville played the widow Cathy in what BBC sitcom?”

3. Besting The Beast – £120,000

Screenshot of The Chase showing Julia, Laura, and Bryan with a £120,000 winnings total.
ITV
Bryan Laura and Julia beat The Beast for £120,000[/caption]

Bryan, Laura and Julia made it through to the final chase together in 2023, going up against Mark ‘The Beast’ Labbett.

But from the get go they made sure he had to work to stop them, racking up an impressive score of 23 points that Labbett had to beat.

In the final few seconds he was asked: “What island group appears on the signpost of Land’s End?”

While he got it right, in the end, he could only achieve 17 with pushbacks also coming in handy, and the trio walked home with £120,000 – or £40,000 each.

4. Biggest Solo Win Ever – £75,000

ITV
Eden won the biggest solo win on the show aged just 20[/caption]

In 2021, Darragh ‘The Menace’ Ennis was beaten by 20-year-old student Eden Nash in the final chase.

Darragh was asked: “‘When I give my heart’ is a line from what Nat King Cole hit?”

The Chaser answered correctly but time was not on his side.

The win meant Eden took home £75,000 – the single highest win on a daytime gameshow ever for a solo player.

As Bradley Walsh congratulated him, Eden joked: “That’s alright, innit!” with Darragh saying it was “brilliantly played”.

Eden said he was just going to “look at it in his bank account” rather than do anything with it.

5. Biggest Head-to-Head Win – £201,000

Strictly star and YouTuber Joe Sugg made show history in 2023 when he managed to bag a staggering £201,000 for the prize pot.

In his head-to-head round against Paul Sinha, Joe took a massive gamble by going for the higher prize.

It all came down to a one question shoot out which was: “Which of a hedgehog’s senses is very poor?”

The options were sight, hearing, smell.

Joe managed to get the answer right, with Bradley hugging Joe at his impressive feat.

But in a devastating blow, he later lost it in the final chase when Paul ultimately caught up to the team’s score of 18 after a minor mistake.

When asked who starred in Stepbrothers, Joe and his celebrity team-mates answered Will Ferrell – but mispronounced his name as Will Farrell, which Bradley could not accept.

The team were instead awarded £1,000 each for their chosen charities.

6. Biggest group take down – £116,000

It’s rare that all four contestants make it to the final chase, so Jenny ‘The Vixen’ Ryan had her work cut out from her at the start.

In this celebrity special, Tony Maudsley, Bryony Page, Kerry Godilman and Alexander Armstrong all made it through to the last round, with £116,000 in their prize pot for charity.

Racking up an impressive 23 points for The Vixen to beat, Jenny gave it her all but found herself suffering pushbacks when she got questions wrong.

In the final moments, she was asked: “What was the full name of the first Duke of Wellington?”

The Vixen knew her history, but it wasn’t enough to catch the players.

Maybe it was the Christmas spirit, but the team managed to take home the win – and more importantly £116,000 (29,000 each) for good causes, mainly children’s charities.

Rather than be annoyed, Jenny looked tearfully proud at the group for their achievement.

The answers!

  1. Alex Zanardi
  2. Mum
  3. Scilly Islands
  4. When I Fall in Love
  5. Sight
  6. Arthur

The Chase is available on ITVX.

‘I can’t believe it’, cries Louth girl, 8, ‘excited’ for Lapland trip after winning Irish Sun & Barnardos colouring comp

YES she Kane! Meet talented Libby Kane, the winner of this year’s Irish Sun Barnardos colouring competition.

Artistic Libby, eight, wowed the judges with her colourful and imaginative interpretation of illustrator Chris Judge’s delightful drawing.

Libby, from Ardee, Co. Louth, beat hordes of entries from all over Ireland, all hoping to be in with a chance of bagging the top prize, a once-in-a-lifetime trip for a family of four to Lapland, courtesy of sponsors Sunway.

A thrilled Libby said: “Oh my God, I can’t believe it, I am so excited. Can I tell my friends?”

Libby’s proud mum Grainne, 44, dad Patrick, 45, and big brother Zach, 14, told of their joy at Libby’s big win.

Grainne said: “We are super proud of Libby and her hard work. After receiving the call from Barnardos we spent the evening ringing family and friends. I love the way she matches different colours.”

Colouring queen Libby has previously won sports equipment for her school through a competition.

This time around her Nanny Rosie sent her on the Irish Sun Barnardos’ Big Toddle comp and asked her to give it a go.

Grainne said: “Libby spent lots of time colouring it in across a couple of weeks.

“She was with me when we received the call from Alison from Barnardos to let us know Libby had won.

“Libby was super excited, as are we all. It’s a dream come true.”

Now the Kane family are gearing up for the magical Enchanted Escape Sunway package which includes unforgettable activities such as husky sled rides, snowmobiling and reindeer sleigh journeys through the wilderness and of course the highlight – meeting Santa in his cosy, traditional cabin.

This year’s Big Toddle theme is Little Heroes and Dublin’s Q102 star Kathryn Thomas and her own little hero, daughter Grace, three, were on hand to help kick off our annual comp in May.

The winner was selected by Barnardos, Sunway and the Irish Sun.

Alison Kelly, Head of Events at Barnardos, said: “We were absolutely blown away by the talent and creativity on display in this year’s Big Toddle colouring competition with The Irish Sun and Sunway.

“Such a high standard certainly made our judging very difficult!

“Libby’s winning picture did stand out to us though with her bright colours, intricate details and sticker embellishments – that was a really sweet touch.

MAGICAL MOMENT

“We could see how much effort Libby had put into her picture, so it was a perfect match for a prize as special as a trip to meet Santa!

“It’s definitely one of the highlights of my year to pick up the phone and tell a child they’ve won a trip to Lapland.

“The excitement in their voice, the squeals – it’s a moment of magic for the whole family.

“I’d like to say a huge thank you to the team at The Irish Sun and to our wonderful competition sponsor, Sunway, for their continued support and generosity.

“We’re so proud to help create memories that will last a lifetime. Because childhood lasts a lifetime.”

‘INCREDIBLE TALENT’

Irish Sun Editor Fiona Wynne added: “We were absolutely overwhelmed by the incredible talent on display this year.

“However, Libby’s entry truly captured our hearts. Her imaginative use of colour and the sheer joy that radiated from her artwork made her stand out.

“It was a beautiful piece that perfectly embodied the spirit of the competition, and she is a very deserving winner.”

How to stop your iPhone BREAKING in the heat – protect your mobile NOW

IT’S not just us feeling the heat this weekend – but our phones are too.

As the mercury skyrockets to highs of 32C and many flocking to parks and beaches, your iPhone will be exposed to the elements too.

iPhone temperature alert: Phone needs to cool down before use.
Hot weather can force your iPhone to temporarily shut down while it cools off

An amber heat health alert has been issued for six regions across England, that will remain in place until Monday.

This includes The West Midlands, East Midlands, South East, South West, London, and East of England.

The UK Health Security Agency-issued warning means there’s an increase in risk to health for people aged over 65 or those with pre-existing health conditions, including respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.

But that’s not the only warning to watch out for.

As well as themselves, Brits need to take special care of their expensive gadgets.

Overheating can cause your smartphone to temporarily shut down – and can also damage your battery.

Here are seven ways to protect your smartphone – be it an iPhone or Android handset – in hot weather.

1. Keep it out of direct sunlight

Make sure to keep your iPhone cool by keeping it out of direct sunlight on hotter days.

It may sound obvious, but using your device while it’s soaking up extra heat from the sun can cause significant damage.

Letting your iPhone get too toasty could trigger a worrying pop-up that shuts your phone down.

Even Apple has warned that letting your iPhone temperature rise too high could “permanently shorten battery life”.

“Low – or high-temperature conditions might cause the device to change its behaviour,” Apple explains.

High temperatures can mess up your battery life for good.

“Using an iOS or iPadOS device in very hot conditions can permanently shorten battery life,” an Apple support post reads.

2. Remove the case

Another way to help your iPhone cool down is to remove any case you move have slapped on.

While they’re a useful way to protect your device from scratches and drops, they also act as an insulating layer that can trap heat.

This is particularly true if you use a leather or rubber case, which are excellent insulators.

It may be worth weighing up whether – on hotter days – your case is doing more damage than good.

3. Turn off your phone

If your phone is getting too hot, switching it off is a good way to ensure it doesn’t sustain any long-term damage.

This is a good way to shut down the processor, battery and any other parts that can get especially toasty.

Of course, this leaves you unable to use your phone, so is not a permanent solution and should only be used in emergencies.

Alternatively, you can just stop using your phone for five minutes to give it a chance to cool down.

4. Change your settings

Changing your phone’s settings is another way to help it to keep cool on scorching days.

For instance, turning your screen’s brightness down uses less of your phone’s battery and so causes it to heat up less.

If your phone automatically turns brightness to max when you’re outside, consider turning this off.

Also by turning your data off, you’re saving battery which is also closely linked to phone temperature.

Turning your phone onto low-power mode can also help fix the issue.

5. Don’t push your phone to the limit

Avoid using power-hungry apps for long periods of time.

This is particularly important for gamers, because graphics-intensive game apps can cause a phone’s processor to heat up very quickly.

Certain features, such as GPS and gaming, can also cause problems when used in hot conditions or direct sunlight for an extended period of time.

6. Don’t leave your phone in your pocket

Don’t put your iPhone in confined places, like under bed covers or in your pocket.

Your trousers or shorts can act as an insulating layer that traps heat around your device.

This is particularly true if you’re wearing something tight, such as skinny-fit jeans, that holds onto air more effectively.

7. Leave it somewhere cool

If none of the above work, you can always try storing your phone somewhere cool.

This might be under an electric fan or even in one of the cupboards in your kitchen.

It is not recommended that you store your phone in the fridge or freezer, however, as this can damage it.

Graham Geraghty predicts winner of Kerry vs Tyrone as well as Tailteann Cup final between Kildare & Limerick

IT’S mad how Kerry seem to do it every year — limp along at the start of the race and hit top gear coming to the finish line.

The Kingdom were outstanding in the second half against Armagh and went from being widely written off to joint-favourites for Sam Maguire.

Man of the Match Seán O’Shea was incredible against the Orchard

Jack O’Connor used the anger at that criticism to fire up his players and they blew the Orchard away.

Amazingly, Armagh stood off them as they fired 0-14 without reply but Tyrone won’t let that happen.

The Red Hands squeezed the life out of Dublin two weeks ago and showed they can can be so hard to play against.

Malachy O’Rourke’s men are the only county to have beaten Donegal this summer and like the Kingdom, the form is coming at the right time for them.

But you’d have to fancy Kerry based on what they did to the All-Ireland champions and I still feel there’s a bit more in them.

David Clifford scored 0-7. Pádraig Hampsey will probably mark him but will he be able to cope with him for a full game?

Seánie O’Shea hit 0-12 against Armagh, starting with a two-pointer and the orange flags will be crucial again.

Kerry got five the last day and Tyrone did the same against the Dubs but I think the Kingdom have the advantage in that scenario and that could be the winning of the game.

At the very start of the Championship, I called Kerry as my All-Ireland winners and I still think that could be the case.

Obviously, Tyrone have their own game-plan to cut off the supply to Clifford but I just think Kerry have too much class all over.

Today is also massive for Kildare and Limerick in the Tailteann Cup final.

The Lilywhites will be peering over the fence at what Meath have done since winning the second-tier Championship in 2023 and Down had a brilliant campaign this summer after last year’s success.

Limerick were excellent in their semi-final win over Wicklow and Jimmy Lee has a team who are really fighting for each other and play great football.

But Kildare will see this as a huge chance to play for Sam Maguire next year and I fancy them to get it done and get on the road back to where they belong — competing for Leinster and All-Ireland titles.
