A MOTORS expert has warned drivers that they face a hefty £2,500 fine over a “harmless” car prank this winter.
Drivers are facing extra challenges on the road during the colder, wetter months as the weather takes a toll on our beloved vehicles.
GettyScrawling ‘wash me’ or ‘clean me’ on a car can land you in hot water[/caption]
The rain, snow and sleet can all cause the roads to become dirty and muddy which can splash onto our motors.
This can leave our cars looking worse for wear at this time of the year.
Especially since the wintry conditions can make our cars dirty almost immediately after cleaning them.
And when we see a particularly dirty or dusty van or car, it can be very tempting to scrawl ‘clean me’ on its exterior.
But while the cheeky message may be harmless, writing “clean me” or other playful comments on a friend or stranger’s car could land you in hot water.
Experts at car cleaning retailer, 1Dot, warned that if you get caught doing it, you could actually face a £2,500 fine.
The seemingly innocent prank could even see you be prosecuted for criminal damage.
This is because it could be classed as vandalising someone else’s vehicle and can be reported to the police.
And if the prank scratches the paintwork or windows then you could be taken to court to cover repair costs.
If the damage requires repairs costing less than £5,000, offenders can be fined up to £2,500.
Ash Young, founder of 1Dot, said: “In winter, it’s normal for dirt to start to build up.
“Wet and snowy conditions can make the roads muddy, and all that filth can end up sticking to a car’s exterior.
“Although it may seem like a harmless bit of banter, scribbling ‘clean me’, ‘wash me’ or other silly phrases on another person’s car could result in you scratching the paintwork and causing hundreds of pounds worth of damage.
“To avoid unnecessary damage and a costly penalty, it’s best to leave the jokes for in-person.”
Ash has also shared his top tips for drivers who want to avoid having any messages scrawled on their dirty motors.
He recommends keeping on top of a winter cleaning routine to keep on top of their vehicles when it’s muddy and wet outside.
He said: “If it’s just a light dusting of dirt then a quick hose down should do the trick.
“But if your car’s covered in more severe muck, warm water and a good cleaning product will help loosen it.
“For stubborn spots, a soft car-cleaning brush can work wonders without damaging the paint too.”

A CARJACKING victim last night blasted his attackers for trying to recreate scenes from the Grand Theft Auto video game.
Lucas Story, 72, has had to use crutches since he was dragged from his van and beaten unconscious by two thugs after he refused to give them a lift.
Matthew Bell and Callum Ross attacked and vanjacked chocolatier Lucas StoryfacebookThe thugs were recreating scenes from Grand Theft AutoReuters
Callum Ross, 19, and Matthew Bell, 24, were caged for four and a half years each over the horror incident in Inverness.
But the injuries and trauma Lucas suffered forced him to close his chocolate shop business in the Highland city.
The grandad said: “My life is not a video game — but that is how they treated it.
“They see a car and think they can take it, like they do when they’re playing GTA.
“They think a human being is just something in their way to get rid of.
“I blame the video games because they don’t realise what happens in the real world.”

The master chocolatier Lucas sold handmade treats after moving north with his wife Ingrid, 74, more than 20 years ago.
He was driving to his shop in December 2023 when he declined Ross and Bell a lift because his Peugeot Bipper was packed with sweets for the busy festive period.
One thug hurled a can of beer at the van. But when Lucas checked the damage, they pounced.
The yobs knocked him out and broke his leg.
But he still managed to jump on the bonnet in a bid to stop them fleeing.
He said: “One tried to run over me but he couldn’t get it to reverse.”
Lucas was in the city’s Raigmore Hospital for six weeks.
Every time I try to take a step, I’m reminded of the attack. I still have nightmares about it all.. I have to live with what they did to me
He said: “Every time I try to take a step, I’m reminded of the attack. I still have nightmares about it all.”
At Inverness Sheriff Court, the thugs admitted assault to severe injury, danger of life and permanent disfigurement.
Bell blamed substance abuse while Ross claimed mental health issues.
But Lucas said: “This is no one’s fault but theirs. I hope they learn and try to change their lives.
“Nothing will change for me. I have to live with what they did to me.”

PHILIPPE CLEMENT has been SACKED as manager of Rangers.
Ibrox chiefs have finally decided enough is enough with Clement dismissed just 16 months after taking charge.
PAClement has been dismissed by Rangers[/caption]

Willie VassAlex Rae was Clement’s first-team coach with previous No2 Andries Ulderink (centre) drafted in as assistant manager in the summer[/caption]
Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to St Mirren proved the final straw and the club have now confirmed the manager’s exit.
Clement replaced Michael Beale as Rangers manager in October 2023 and won the League Cup less than two months into his tenure.
The former Monaco boss also led Rangers into an unexpected title challenge, but it was a challenge that ultimately fell apart towards the end of the season.
The Gers would eventually finish eight points behind champions Celtic.
There has barely been a hint of a title challenge this season, with Rangers’ campaign all but over by February.
The Light Blues trail rivals Celtic by THIRTEEN points and also lost the League Cup Final to the Hoops back in December.
Dire form either side of a 3-0 league win over Celtic in early January led to major fan protests, with supporters WALKING OUT during the match with St Johnstone.
Despite fans demanding change, new Rangers CEO Patrick Stewart publicly BLACKED Clement last month.
An upturn in form bought Clement some much-needed credit.
Rangers were on a run of five domestic games unbeaten when Queen’s Park visited Ibrox on February 9.
However, Clement’s side would lose 1-0 to their Championship opponents in a result viewed as one of the worst in the club’s history.
A video surfaced online showing Clement walking a gauntlet of some furious abuse as he left Ibrox following the humiliating loss.
He would, however, keep his job.
Speaking last week, Gers CEO Stewart branded that result ‘a source of shame’ but still insisted it was still wasn’t the right decision NOT so sack Clement.
Those comments came before the dramatic developments regarding the financial muscle of NFL giants San Francisco 49ers closing in on a stunning takeover of Rangers came to light.
The weekend would prove another horror show with Rangers, one that Clement branded the WORST performance since he took charge.
The Gers fell to a 2-0 home defeat against St Mirren, the first time the Buddies had won at Ibrox since 1991.
It was also the Saints’ first time recording back-to-back wins over the Light Blues for more than FORTY years.
And despite the words of the chief executive last week, Gers chiefs have decided they can no longer back Clement as boss.
The 50-year old has been axed just six months after signing a contract extension until 2028.
Rangers’ form in Europe has been good, with a last 16 Europa League tie with Fenerbahce on the horizon.
CEO Stewart had claimed the Light Blues’ excellent showing on the continent meant it was too much of a RISK to dismiss Clement.
But even that European performance hasn’t ultimately been enough to save him.

IF you’re going to challenge Jose Mourinho to a pee-the-highest contest over how to win trophies, better have a right good pair of waterproof trousers handy.
But if your team then goes out and gives a performance as p***-poor as Philippe Clement’s did yet again on Saturday?
AlamyA 2-0 defeat to St Mirren at Ibrox meant Philippe Clement’s time was up[/caption]
ReutersBut not before starting a bizarre spat with Jose Mourinho[/caption]
Sorry, monsieur, an all-over tarpaulin won’t protect you from what’s coming next.
Because no matter how much the Rangers board have tried to avoid the moment, it really IS time to Rinse & Repeat.
And now, here they are, less than 48 hours on from losing their first home game after that humiliation and it looks like Stewart’s support was all just so much hot air.
If, as our back page predicts, Clement’s finally a goner then Rangers will at once have done the right thing, but at the same time will look weak and indecisive – because what they’re ready to do today could have been done before Ne’erday and might still have given them a chance of winning a trophy.
Binning him off the back of those festive debacles away to St Mirren and Motherwell, as I wrote at the time they should have, wouldn’t have changed the job those consultants have to do; plus, it might also have brought enough stability on the park to keep the selling price up for if and when the 49ers deal gets done, rather than their market value dropping by the day.
Instead, though, hanging on to a guy who anyone could see was finished only served to make things worse, partly through results but also thanks to a waterfall of press conference drivel that proved beyond doubt he really DOESN’T get the environment he’s working in or the demands made of him.
I mean, how deluded do you need to be to go from trying to justify defeat to a mid-table Championship side on the basis of how bad your strikers were to suddenly deciding you have a right to diss one of the greatest coaches of all time?
What goes through his head?
He’s been asked a thousand different ways about whether his own jacket’s on a shoogly peg and has found a thousand different ways not to give an honest answer.
Try to wheedle a nugget out of him about the impending takeover and he goes more neutral than Switzerland.
A man-management genius whose achievements across the past 22 years have seen him named World Coach Of The Year with four different clubs?
And suddenly, he’s ALL opinions.
“Mourinho? Not my cup of tea. I like attacking football, his is boring; that yawn-inducing habit he has of getting his teams to score more than the opposition.”
Philippe Clement on Jose Mourinho
Seriously, someone should have wheeled him out of the media room there and then, still in his chair, because it was a statement as embarrassing as it was bound to come back and bite him on the backside; which, of course, it did within 24 hours.
Not that it matters now, of course, seeing as it seems he won’t have to look Mourinho in the eye come the Fenerbahce tie; pity, because it would have been fun to see him explain why he prefers HIS teams to have 28 shots in one home game, then 17 in the next, get fewer than half of them on target, score hee-haw and be bullied into defeat on the break both times.
If Mourinho bothered to read those comments, he’ll have laughed at them as much as the rest of us – yes, maybe even Rangers fans, who must be at the stage where if they don’t find some black humour in the state of their team, they’ll cry until all that’s left are lots of little piles of salt on tens of thousands of empty plastic seats.
Probably the most damning thing that can be said about that 2-0 loss to St Mirren, who hadn’t won at Ibrox since 1991 and hadn’t beaten Rangers back-to-back since 1980, is that as much as it dismayed those fans, it didn’t shock them any more than it did you or me.
In fact, you know what?
Off the back of Celtic losing to Hibs at lunchtime, it felt almost INEVITABLE that Clement’s side would find a way to cock up even worse. Because that’s his legacy, losing a litany of games Rangers should be winning with their eyes shut.
The one piece of silverware he led them to, the one Old Firm victory he managed, a handful of upbeat European nights? They all feel like blips in what will surely be remembered as a nightmarish reign.
So hell mend the Rangers board for sleepwalking to where they find themselves today.

A 34-YEAR-OLD woman who had to wait weeks to get a dental appointment died after being rushed to hospital with toothache.
Leigh Rodgers, 34, went into shock while being given a scan at her local hospital and died due to an allergic reaction to a chemical dye used to aid the imaging process.
AlamyLeigh Rodgers was rushed to the University Hospital of North Durham[/caption]
She had already been in pain for two weeks before pleading with her dental surgery to be seen, an inquest heard.
After being told she would have to wait, her partner called an ambulance to their home in County Durham.
When she arrived at the University Hospital of North Durham, medics recognised it was a dental problem but a doctor could help with the pain.
She as given an iodine-based contrast dye to aid a whole body CT scan.
But a post-mortem later concluded she had died from an allergic reaction to the contrast dye.
Her partner Darren told Crook Coroners’ Court: “She had been experiencing toothache for around 10-14 days.
“In the past, the pain had subsided with painkillers, but that wasn’t working this time.
“Leigh went to work on the morning of March 7, and had tried to get a dentist appointment but couldn’t for weeks.
“She couldn’t wait that long. I called the ambulance and the paramedics came, and when we got to the hospital.
“We were told that it was a dental issue but the doctor could assist with the pain.”
Leigh suffered from severe toothache that extended to her neck and chest for around a fortnight, the inquest heard.
It was decided she needed a CT scan of her neck and thorax to rule out the presence of Ludwig’s angina, a rare, life-threatening bacterial infection that can be caused by a tooth infection.
Leigh was given iodine-based special dye which makes parts of the body more visible on scan.
While still in the scan machine, she went into anaphylactic shock.
Darren said: “We thought nothing of her being asked to go for the CT scan. She was in the doctor’s hands at that point.
“I saw a rush of people go into the room, and I couldn’t really see what was happening, but soon found out that Leigh had suffered a reaction.”
Despite attempts to resuscitate her for over 90 minutes, she died just after 6.15pm.
Dr Oliver Moore, a consultant in emergency medicine at the University Hospital of North Durham, saying it was the first time in his career he had seen someone experience an allergic reaction to the fluid.
He said: “CT scans do come with a risk of reaction, but this is the single case of this situation in my practice, and I believe that there was no delay in administering treatment”.
In his conclusion, Crispin Oliver, senior assistant coroner for County Durham and Darlington, delivered a narrative verdict, ruling that Leigh died from “severe refractory anaphylaxis to contrast media”.
The coroner added the death was “very unusual” and “extremely unfortunate” as he delivered the verdict.
He said: “This is a death in very unusual circumstances, and it is extremely unfortunate.
“I wish that Leigh’s family did not have to be here today, and I hope that this never happens to anyone again.”
What your mouth says about your health and when to worry
BAD breath and mouth ulcers are common occurrences.
But they may signal an underlying health problem, too.
Dentist Dr Rahul Nehra of The Smile Gallery reveals the hidden dangers lurking in our mouths…
BLEEDING GUMS
PERSISTENT bleeding gums, especially during brushing or flossing, can indicate gum disease, such as gingivitis or periodontitis.
This is often caused by plaque buildup along the gumline, leading to inflammation and potential tissue damage.
It’s essential to address bleeding gums promptly to prevent further complications like gum recession and tooth loss.
For bleeding gums, proper oral hygiene is crucial, along with professional dental cleanings to remove plaque and tartar buildup.
BAD BREATH
Chronic bad breath, or halitosis, can be a sign of various dental issues, including poor oral hygiene, gum disease or cavities.
But it could be an underlying health problem such as diabetes or gastrointestinal issues.
Dental check-ups can help identify and address the root cause of bad breath, such as gum disease.
Improving bad breath typically involves maintaining good oral hygiene habits, such as brushing twice daily, flossing, and using an antimicrobial mouthwash.
LUMPS AND SORES
WHILE occasional mouth sores are common and often harmless, persistent lumps or sores that don’t heal within two weeks could be signs of more serious conditions such as oral cancer.
Other concerning signs include white or red patches, numbness, or difficulty moving the jaw. If you notice any of these symptoms, seeing a dentist or doctor for further evaluation is crucial.
Sores in the mouth may benefit from topical treatments or medications prescribed by a dentist or doctor, while monitoring for any signs of infection or malignancy.
WOBBLY TEETH
LOOSE teeth can indicate advanced gum disease or untreated tooth decay.
Without prompt intervention, this can lead to tooth loss and bone deterioration.
Seeking dental care as soon as possible can help preserve remaining teeth, possibly through procedures like scaling and root planing or dental restorations.
SWALLOWING DIFFICULTY
DIFFICULTY swallowing, also known as dysphagia, can be caused by various factors, including oral infections, inflamed tonsils, or even more severe issues like throat cancer.
If you experience persistent difficulty swallowing or a sensation of something stuck in your throat, it’s essential to seek medical or dental attention promptly for evaluation and appropriate treatment.
CROAKY VOICE
A CROAKY or hoarse voice can result from various conditions affecting the throat or vocal cords, including acid reflux, respiratory infections, or vocal cord nodules or polyps.
In some cases, poor oral hygiene or throat irritation can also contribute to voice changes.
If you experience persistent hoarseness or voice changes, it’s advisable to consult with a healthcare professional.
Addressing a croaky voice may involve lifestyle modifications, such as avoiding irritants like tobacco smoke or excessive vocal strain.
