Man drowns after getting into difficulty in Co Tipperary river after fishing with pals as gardai confirm ‘ongoing’ probe
A MAN who drowned after getting into difficulty in a river in Co Tipperary earlier this week has been named locally.
Danny Kavanagh is understood to have been among a group of pals fishing in the River Suir at around 8:30pm on Tuesday when the tragedy took place.
Gardai and emergency services were alerted to the incident in the Carrick-On-Suir area at around 8:30pm and a rescue operation was launched.
Coastguard Helicopter Rescue 117 and Carrick-on-Suir River Rescue were among those involved in the search to recover Kavanagh’s body.
Inland Fisheries Ireland officers also attended the scene.
Kavanagh’s body was recovered from the river hours after the search operation was launched and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
In a statement, a garda spokesperson said: “Gardai were alerted to an incident where a male encountered difficulty in the water in Carrick-On-Suir, Co Tipperary on Tuesday 1st July 2025 at approximately 8:30pm.
“His body has since been recovered from the river.
“He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
“Investigations are ongoing.”
Separately, a teenage boy who died in a fatal fall while on holidays with his parents in Kerry has been named.
Darragh Byrne, 16, from Charleville, Co Cork, was killed instantly on Tuesday when he fell at a lake close to Daingean Ui Chuis in the west Kerry Gaeltacht of Corca Dhuibhne near the Conor Pass.
The 16-year-old was a student in the Christian Brothers Secondary School in Charleville.
Darragh had travelled to Kerry on holidays with his parents, James and Siobhan, and is believed to have been an only child.
He went exploring an area with a waterfall close to Pedlars Lake at Conor Pass, near Dingle.
When he failed to return, his parents raised the alarm at around 3pm.
‘HEAVY HEART’
Emergency services, including 30 members of Dingle Coast Guard and the Kerry Mountain Action Team, immediately responded along with the Coast Guard Rescue Helicopter 115, ambulance service and Gardai.
The boy was found close to the bottom of the waterfall and it is believed he may have climbed up to the lake, slipped and plunged to his death.
He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was taken to University Hospital Kerry for a post-mortem examination.
Gerry Christie of Kerry Mountain Rescue Team, told Radio Kerry: “I’m speaking with a heavy heart today but how heavy are the hearts of his parents. He was well on the way to being a man – a man sadly he now will never be.
“One can only assume that somehow he slipped on a beautiful afternoon in Kerry. It puts it into context how precious life can be.
“I did speak briefly to his parents when I came down but I need to extend my condolences and that of all of Kerry Mountain Rescue Team, and indeed all of Kerry. It’s so sad.”

Man Utd in talks with Aston Villa and Chelsea over Ollie Watkins and Christopher Nkunku to fix striker transfer dilemma

MANCHESTER UNITED have reportedly opened talks with Aston Villa and Chelsea over potential moves for Ollie Watkins and Christopher Nkunku.
The Red Devils are in the market for attacking reinforcements this summer following a woeful 2024/25 Premier League season.

It recently emerged that the Old Trafford club had earmarked England and France internationals Watkins and Nkunku as potential targets.
And according to reports, they have reached out to Villa and Chelsea over the duo’s availability.
That’s according to The Athletic, who claim United have made a “check call” to Villa about a potential transfer for Watkins.
But there has been no “movement” on a potential move to Old Trafford for the former Exeter City man.
The Athletic also claim a move to the Theatre of Dreams for Nkunku has come up in their discussions with Chelsea, who are seemingly willing to let the France international leave Stamford Bridge.
A potential move to west London for wantaway winger Alejandro Garnacho has also been the topic of the club’s recent discussions with the Blues.
Watkins has been Villa’s star man for the last two seasons, the most recent of which he bagged 17 goals and racked up 14 assists.
United could face a domestic battle with Arsenal to land the 29-year-old.

The Gunners made a last-gasp bid to sign Watkins in the winter transfer window but had their offer rejected by the Villans.
The north Londoners are reportedly contemplating revisiting a move for Watkins if their pursuit of Sporting Lisbon hitman Viktor Gyokeres fails to bear fruit.
A move for Nkunku will likely be easier for United to facilitate given Chelsea’s need to sell players to balance the books this summer.
The 27-year-old is seemingly surplus to requirements following the Blues’ £30million acquisition of Liam Delap from Ipswich.
That’s despite him bagging 15 goals in all competitions for last season’s Conference League winners.
