Millions of Brits still can’t swim – and a third don’t feel confident in the water, survey shows

NEARLY nine million British adults are still unable to swim, according to shocking new research.

A study of 2,000 adults found 17 per cent have no swimming ability whatsoever, 33 per cent don’t feel confident in the water, and 42 per cent will only brave the shallow end.

This is part of EasyJet’s new initiative that’s offering free swimming lessons to 1,000 adults across the UK[/caption]

Despite swimming and water safety being on the national curriculum, one in five said they weren’t offered lessons at school,

Also, a further 24 per cent didn’t get taught because their parents couldn’t swim.

Others were put off by a bad experience, or didn’t see swimming as important when they were growing up.

The research was commissioned by EasyJet, as part of an initiative that offers free swimming lessons to 1,000 adults across the UK ahead of the summer holidays.

The programme has been developed in partnership with Triple Olympic Champion Tom Dean, national swim provider Better, and the Royal Life Saving Society UK.

Tom Dean, who has spoken to Parliament about water safety, said: “As an Olympic swimmer, I know the importance of learning water safety skills and am passionate about ensuring everyone across Britain has access to basic swimming competencies.

“Whether it’s staying with a buddy, knowing your limits, or sticking to areas where you can stand, it’s never too late to learn how to swim.”

The research also revealed that 17 per cent of Brits grew up without a local pool.

More than 100 public pools have closed across the UK in the past 20 years – with the average pool now 4.3 miles from people’s homes.

For five per cent, the nearest pool is more than 10 miles away.

Worryingly, this gap could grow in the years ahead – with 14 per cent of parents admitting they haven’t enrolled their children in swimming lessons and don’t plan to teach them either.

Of these, 20 per cent say they don’t have the time, 15 per cent cite high costs, and 13 per cent believe swimming is too risky.

Despite this, 31 per cent of parents worry about their children swimming on holiday because they can’t swim themselves.

A further 32 per cent fear they wouldn’t be able to help if something went wrong, and 18 per cent wish they could join their children or grandchildren in the pool – but can’t.

Meanwhile, 25 per cent say their lack of swimming ability affects how much they enjoy their holidays.

Nearly one in five are too scared to get in the pool at all, and 11 per cent have avoided beach holidays altogether because of it.

But now, 35 per cent of non-swimmers would take lessons as adults if given the chance – with 23 per cent admitting their lack of ability makes them feel vulnerable.

Top 10 barriers to learning how to swim as children

1.    It wasn’t seen as important growing up

2.    School didn’t offer a learn-to-swim programme

3.    Parents couldn’t swim so didn’t teach them

4.    Parents didn’t have time to take them to lessons

5.    A bad early experience

6.    No pool nearby

7.    Seen as too dangerous

8.    No time during school

9.    Not part of their culture or religion

10.   Too expensive

Matt Callaghan, chief operating officer at easyJet Holidays, said: “We know how much Brits love their summer beach holidays to Europe’s favourite destinations.

“That’s why it’s so important to us to highlight the surprisingly high number of adults who can’t swim – something we’re determined to help change.

“By improving safety and helping more people fully enjoy the water, we’re also offering a life skill that lasts far beyond the holiday itself.

“We’re thrilled to partner with Olympic athlete Tom Dean and the Royal Life Saving Society UK to offer 1,000 British adults the opportunity to learn to swim.

“Together, we’re taking a meaningful step towards closing the gap and giving more people the confidence and freedom to enjoy the water – on holiday and at home.”

Love Island stars who look unrecognisable after the villa…bombshell’s bodybuilder transformation to shocking eye surgery

LOOKING for fortune, fame and occasionally romance, a steady stream of ultra glammed-up stars have graced our screens on Love Island over the past decade.

And while some indulge in a few tweakments prior to heading into the villa, a shocking number have undergone dramatic transformations after leaving the show.

Patsy revealed the results of the op this week

This week Love Island’s first disabled contestant, Patsy Field, 30, revealed the jaw-dropping results of a cat eye facelift, which she had in a bid to “feel prettier”.

The Kent admin worker, who has Erb’s Palsy, went under the knife in Turkey after becoming hypercritical of her appearance while trying to make it as a social media influencer.

She admitted her first reaction on seeing the results of the “gifted procedure” was “what have I done?” and later said she “wouldn’t recommend this” to her fans.

Patsy said being on TV made her more self-conscious, and she was “egged on” to have the op because she’s constantly looking at pictures of herself and had always had an “insecurity” about her eyes.

She is far from the only Islander to be tempted by surgical ‘enhancement’ after the show – especially because, as one former star revealed, there’s a “daily influx” of emails from firms offering free surgery.

Here we take a look at some of our ITV show alumni favourites who now look completely unrecognisable.

Nicole Samuel

Last year’s Love Island runner-up Nicole Samuel looks noticeably different since her time in the villa.

The Welsh beauty has been working hard in the gym and keeps fans up-to-date with her incredible transformation, recently showing off her toned frame in a barely-there swimsuit.

Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Dr Daniel Barrett told MailOnline he believed Nicole had “a little filler” and Botox.

Unfortunately he believed the ‘tweakments’ had aged her, making her look 11 years older than she actually was, as he wrongly believed she was 35 instead of 24.

Additionally, since leaving the show, Nicole has had Emax Laminate Veneers from a firm in Turkey and still sports wrinkle-free skin and slightly plumped-up cheeks and lips.

Series seven winner Millie Court was forced to deny having a boob job after fans confused her 2st weight gain for going under the knife.

The 29-year-old went up two dress sizes from a size 6 to a 10 after leaving the villa and said she was lucky the weight “goes to all the right places”.

She added: “It goes to my bum and boobs mainly, so my boobs are really big at the moment”.

Last year Millie, who has been getting lip filler since she was 17, spoke about having clearer skin after battling with acne flare-ups for years.

The former fashion buyer said she planned to have micro-needling – which smooths the skin by using small needles to increase collagen production – to mask her acne scars.

Millie, is still dating her Love Island partner Liam Reardon from 2021 – they split in July 2022 but got back together in April 2023 – also switched her signature peroxide blonde locks for a darker shade.

Flash in the pan Love Island star Lavena Back vowed to “steal the other girls’ men” when she entered as a Casa Amor bombshell in 2019.

While she was booted off just days later, after failing to win over any of the boys, she’s now turning heads for another reason.

Lavena, 29, is now a bodybuilder, who just this week revealed she finished runner-up in a competition in a post flaunting her slim, muscular frame and natural curls.

While she didn’t walk away with a trophy, the mum-of-two, who tied the knot two years ago, said the “journey lit a fire in me” online, hinting she will be returning for more.

Tyne-Lexy is now unrecognisable[/caption]

Post her 2017 show appearance, Tyne-Lexy Clarkson claimed she had a “daily influx” of emails offering free cosmetic procedures from firms desperate for publicity.

Later she would claim to be “too scared” to have plastic surgery or cosmetic procedures due to fearing needles so badly she would “faint at a blood test”.

However last year fans were double-taking after seeing snaps of the Brummie bombshell, 28, looking unrecognisable on a Majorca holiday.

Tyne-Lexy hasn’t addressed whether she’s had any procedures done but has spoken about lifestyle changes and taking supplements.

Back in 2018 she shed a stone and dropped two dress sizes in six weeks, admitting she “let herself go” after the show when she went back to university.

She also spoke about having clearer skin thanks to a herbal supplement after suffering acute acne breakouts on-and-off for years, which left her “really depressed”.

In arguably one of the most dramatic post-villa transformations, Harley Judge is now a man mountain.

The bodybuilding gym fanatic, who has gained a whopping 30kg of muscle, has participated in multiple competitions.

He previously said he was “absolutely gutted” to be the first person voted off Love Island in 2017.

Harley recalled working out five times a week and spending “half my life hungover” prior to the show, revealing he would go out drinking multiple times a week before he “broke the cycle”.

Fans struggled to recognise him thanks to a new haircut[/caption]

Glaswegian Harry Young was the first Islander to be recruited through the dating app Tinder – and said he applied because he “didn’t have the chance to date” during the pandemic.

He was among the mass culling of contestants four days into his stint when six were kicked off in an especially cut-throat episode in 2021.

Six months on from his TV appearance fans said the car salesman, 28, was unrecognisable after switching his quiffed flowing hair for a sharp fade with a flat fringe.

The transformation became apparent after he shared a selfie on Instagram, captioned: “Ring light making eyes go mad,” showing off his brightly coloured irises.

No-nonsense northerner Jess White debuted a striking new look in August last year, not long after departing the villa.

Rather than her usual slicked-back look, Jess, 26, framed her face with new thick bangs and had layers sliced into her glossy locks, leading some fans to brand her unrecognisable.

She’s since gone a step further and lightened her do, adding blonde highlights.

Jess has also been open on social media about having filler in her lips.

Two years on from the emotional posts dissuading fans from having cosmetic procedures, she hasn’t addressed whether she’s continued to undergo any, but her lips do look plumper again[/caption]

Since leaving the villa in 2021, Faye Winter has gone in the opposite direction to most Love Islanders by undoing cosmetic treatments she’d previously had.

She also shed nearly two stone, which she put on during the show due to “sitting around eating” all of the time.

Upon leaving the show, Faye had her lip filler completely dissolved, which she admitted was a “shock to the system” because she believed it made her teeth and nose look bigger.

Later, in an emotional plea to dissuade others from experimenting with injectables, the Exeter stunner, 30, told fans: “I’ve ruined my face through over-filling and not getting the correct advice.”

Sharing snaps of her “lumpy” lips, Faye admitted having had 4ml of filler injected and admitted to being “full of embarrassment and regret” seeing snaps of herself back on the show.

Two years on from the emotional posts, she hasn’t addressed whether she’s continued to undergo cosmetic procedures but her lips appear plumper again in recent snaps.

Olivia Attwood

Olivia Attwood has never shied away from spilling the tea on all of her nips, tucks and ‘tweakments’.

But in recent years she’s exposed the problems of appearance-altering ops and has openly recognised her own fixation on them, which started from a young age and led her on a “dangerous road to nowhere”.

Two years on from leaving the villa in 2019, she spent £2,500 on chin liposuction and contouring and revealed she had been having fillers for six years.

She had them dissolved after realising she had gone “too far” and noticing her lip had “come out of the lip line and started to look really puffy”.

That same year Olivia had breast reduction surgery, having first had giant implants inspired by Katie Price and Jodie Marsh when she was 19 years old.

She told Heat magazine: “They were really heavy and too big for my body, so I was starting to get some really bad aching.

“I can’t wait to be able to wear more clothes now without my boobs falling out, putting people off their dinner.”

Last year, Olivia – who is a fan of a slightly more natural look now – launched her ITV2 docuseries The Price of Perfection, which follows people undergoing drastic transformations.

Inspired by her own body-altering mishaps, she said: “I think what I’ve learned – and a lot of people have learned – is that with our bodies, we’ve got to be so careful not to follow fashion.”

UK weather: Met Office issues yellow rain warning with thunderstorms on the way as heatwave ends

THE Met Office has issued a yellow warning for rain amid fears of thunderstorms as the recent heatwave finally comes to an end.

Parts of the UK are set to experience “persistent, heavy rain” from as early as 6am tomorrow as temperatures drop down towards average levels for this time of year.

The yellow warning for rain is in place for much of western Scotland from 6am tomorrow until 3pm on Saturday[/caption]

The heatwave, which had grappled some areas of Britain for as many as six days, came to an end yesterday as temperatures were no longer above the given threshold for three consecutive days.

The yellow warning for rain has been put in place for much of western Scotland from 6am tomorrow until 3pm on Saturday.

It warns that the heavy rain could lead to “difficult travel conditions and possible flooding in places”.

The Met Office has also cautioned residents that there could be “some interruption to power supplies”.

Travel chaos could also follow, as bus and train services could be impacted by the rainfall.

The Met Office said: “Rain is expected to be persistent, and heavy at times, during much of Friday and overnight, before slowly easing later on Saturday.

“40 to 60 mm rain is expected to build up quite widely with in excess of 100 mm over a few mountains.

“Rain will be accompanied by windy conditions, especially Friday daytime when gusts will reach 40 to 50 mph around coasts and hills.”

Areas affected by the warning include Perth and Kinross, Stirling, the Highlands, Argyll and Bute, Inverclyde, North Ayrshire, Renfrewshire, and West Dunbartonshire.

For today, the Met Office has forecast a “north-south split” in the weather, with southern areas expected to enjoy “mostly dry” conditions with “warm spells of sunshine”.

However, northerly areas are predicted to have “rather cool conditions” as temperatures drop.

This also comes with a warning of “frequent blustery showers” amidst a “risk of isolated thunderstorms” throughout the afternoon in northern regions.

Met Office weather maps indicate that much of the rain is expected to fall across western Scotland this afternoon as well as much of Northern Ireland.

As the afternoon progresses, many of these showers continue eastwards, with some also stretching down towards the Lake District in northern England.

This comes after a yellow thunderstorm warning was issued for the north east of England and south east of Scotland yesterday.

Brits were warned to brace for heavy showers and storms which led to travel chaos and a risk of flooding in these areas.

It came less than 24 hours after sun seekers basked in glorious sunshine on Tuesday – the hottest day of the year so far.

Temperatures exceeded 34C in some areas earlier this week, sending Brits rushing to beaches and outdoor pools to cool off.

34.4C was recorded on the mercury in Writtle, Essex, on Tuesday, trumping last year’s record high of 33.2C – recorded on June 21 in Charlwood, Surrey.

Is supermarket fashion the new high street?

DEPUTY Fashion Editor Abby McHale weighs in:

The supermarkets have really upped their game when it comes to their fashion lines. These days, as you head in to do your weekly food shop you can also pick up a selection of purse-friendly, stylish pieces for all the family.

Tesco has just announced a 0.7 per cent increase in the quarter thanks to a ‘strong growth in clothing’ and M&S has earnt the title of the number one destination for womenswear on the high street.

Asda’s clothing line George has made £1.5 million for the supermarket in 2023, 80 per cent of Sainsbury’s clothes sold at full price rather than discounted and Nutmeg at Morrisons sales are also up 2 per cent in the past year.

So what is it about supermarket fashion that is becoming so successful?

Apart from the clothing actually being affordable, it’s good quality too – with many being part of schemes such as the Better Cotton Initiative.

A lot of the time they keep to classic pieces that they know will last the customer year after year.

Plus because they buy so much stock they can turn around pieces quickly and buy for cheaper because of the volumes.

There’s even a stunning Orange Puff Sleeve Bow Back Mini Dress, that will set shoppers back £28 but is sure to be a head-turner.

Fashion fans beam

The Instagram post, which was shared on the official @georgeatasda account, has clearly impressed many, as it has quickly racked up 639 likes and 18 comments.

Fashion fans were particularly impressed with the chic co-ord and many eagerly raced to the comments to share their thoughts.

Reasons to shop supermarket fashion

When looking for new pieces to add to your seasonal wardrobe, or update your basics, there's no need to spend hours walking around clothes shops, or scrolling online. Just pick up a dress or two alongside your fruit and veg...

They’re convenient – Chances are you visit your supermarket more times than a shopping centre or high street.

It’s affordable – For basics  to more fashion-led pieces, supermarkets are leading the way for budget fashion that doesn’t look cheap.

They’re more on-trend that you think – With a customer database larger than the average high street store, shops like ASDA, Sainsbury’s and Tesco are able to cater to the markets and predict trends in a lot more areas than just food supply.

They fit well – Fits and lengths often come with a little more modesty in mind. Fabrics are often highly practical too—think plenty of 100% cotton that can be thrown into the washing machine without thought.

With a flattering v-neckline and adjustable straps, the dress is perfect for those with bigger busts.

Meanwhile, the gathered skirt is a midaxi length – great for going from the beach to dinner.

“Throw this pure cotton beach dress over your swimsuit for a pretty poolside look,” Marks & Spencer bosses said.

“Cut in a comfortable regular fit, it features a flattering v-neckline and elegant and adjustable slim straps.

“The gathered skirt flows to a midaxi length, adding a breezy, floaty touch to your holiday wardrobe.”

Holiday shoppers have already been raving about the dress online too, so you’ll have to act fast if you want to snap one up.

“I love this dress. A cover over a bikini or a floaty dress for day or night. It’s the perfect colour and fit,” one said.

A second agreed: “I love this dress! I wore it in The Maldives and its fit, colour, length and style are all beautiful. I bought it in green too as I loved it so much.”

A third shopper praised the dress after picking up the green version too, they wrote: “This simple cotton dress is beautiful.

“Perfect on a beach or sitting in the sun for cocktails. Fits well and the green is vibrant.”

“Fab beach dress although I think I’ll wear it out too. The green is a fab colour,” someone else chimed in.

But the summer dress isn’t the only reason to dash to your nearest Marks & Spencer right now.

Shoppers have also been loving some shapewear from the high street shop – and they’re perfect for pairing with the dress if you want some extra support.

Light Control Seamless Shaping Body is also incredibly affordable – so if you’re feeling the pinch, you’ll be pleased to know that this high-street find is only £12.

According to M&S, this seamless bodysuit ensures a “truly flattering silhouette.”

The sleeveless piece features “light control shaping for gentle smoothing with plenty of comfort.”

Not only this, but it is non-padded and non-wired for a natural look.

How to look chic on a budget

Fashion stylist Gemma Rose Breger, and beauty journalist Samantha Silver revealed how you can make your outfits elevated without spending hundreds of pounds.

  1. Don’t ever spend on designer denim: River Island ”always has such a great selection of fashion-forward jeans that follow the current trends”. The high street retailer offers a great range of sizes to fit UK 6 – UK 18, and three leg lengths – and prices start from an affordable £25.
  2. There are no rules for jewels: ”Pick up something at a car boot sale, or charity shop, scroll on Vinted & eBay, snap up something from the clothing section in your local supermarket when doing the food shop or check out high street clothing stores.”
  3. Don’t forget the pre-loved sites: With a rising number of second-hand sites, such as Vinted and Depop, there’s no excuse for not buying – or selling – pre-loved garments. Gemma, for instance, has managed to get her hands on chic Chanel sunnies for a mere £17.
