Inside Enya’s reclusive life in lavish €3.8m castle – private relationships to stalker hell after 1st sighting in years

SHE sailed away from fame when she decided back in 1988 to step back from the spotlight.

One of Ireland’s top musical exports, Enya was earlier this year spotted in public for the first time in eight years at a wedding in Donegal.

Enya told how growing up in a large family led her to seek solitude

Her music has travelled right across the globe, with Enya’s songs just this week played in the background as Taoiseach Micheal Martin was hosted in Japan by the nation’s prime minister.

Caribbean Blue hitmaker Enya has sold over 80 million albums worldwide since her career started in the 1980s.

As Ireland’s best-selling solo artist and one of the world’s most successful female musicians ever, she is said to have a net worth of over €118million.

But the singer, 64, has become notorious for her reclusive lifestyle, spending time in her Victorian castle home.

The Donegal native lives in a €3.8million compound in Killiney, south Dublin, which she bought in 1997.

It’s said she outbid Michael Flatley for the plush gaff, which needed extensive redecorating after the purchase.

It was formerly Victoria Castle and Ayesha Castle, but renamed Manderley Castle by Enya after the house in the 1938 novel of the same name.

It’s here that she has garnered a reputation as a recluse, although as she told the Independent in 2015, she has “just always been a very independent person”.

She also told the publication: “I am single, yes.

“But as the song (Even In The Shadows) suggests, there have been… relationships.

“It’s quite hard to have someone accept that – well, not that they are second to the music, but that I do need a certain amount of space for it.

“And even though the person will understand that at the beginning, there is something like jealousy towards the music after a while. It’s difficult.”

GOING IT ALONE

Enya has always gone it alone, it seems – well, mostly.

Eithne Ní Bhraonáin grew up as one of nine siblings in Gweedore, Co Donegal.

She was a shy child who loved playing the piano and singing, later explaining how the pandemonium of a large family instilled her lifelong love of being alone and describing silence as a luxury.

At 19 she joined her family’s band, Celtic music group Clannad, on synth and backing vocals.

She left two years later, moving into the Dublin home of
Nicky Ryan, the group’s producer, and his wife Roma.

Following her acrimonious split from Clannad, the three wrote music together, culminating in her 1987 self-titled debut album.

But it was with the release of second LP Watermark the following year that she entered the stratosphere.

Speaking around the release of Watermark, Nicky said Clannad had “sort of settled into a formula that was very boring”.

He added: “I brought Enya into the group, hoping that it would add new textures–and it did.

“But two years later they were back into the same old routine again, and I got bored. We fought about this and eventually split.

“And because I put Enya into the band, I offered to take her out. Six years later, here we are.”

Featuring her best-known track, Orinoco Flow (Sail Away), Watermark shifted 11 million copies worldwide.

Since then the trio have worked closely on a string of albums which have quietly sold by the bucketload.

She has won four Grammys and got an Oscar nod for her work on the Lord Of The Rings soundtrack.

SONG OF HEALING

After the September 11 terror attacks in the US in 2001, Enya’s song Only Time became somewhat of a healing theme song.

Because it had never been released as a single, Enya released it and donated the proceeds to the Uniform Firefighters Association’s Widows’ and Children’s Fund in the wake of one of New York’s darkest days.

She said: “Basically, we got news from people in America who saw footage, where CNN were using the song, Only Time. I was out there promoting it that year.

“And when I saw the footage it was absolutely so moving. But, in a way, I think everybody in the world felt that if there was any way that we could help them in New York, because it was so traumatised. And they felt there was going to be no more normality ever in the city.

“And they leaned toward certain songs and one of them was Only Time because the song is about time will heal.

“Only Time can tell, and this is what their hope was. So, what we did then was we released the single, the single had never been released there, so we released the single, and then gave all the proceeds then to the fire department.”

However, Enya rarely performs live – the last time was in 2016 – and never tours.

MUSIC FIRST

Enya told The Irish Times in a 2015 interview: “From the beginning, with Watermark, the success came with the music.

“People loved enjoying listening to Orinoco Flow and then the album – but they didn’t know if [Enya] was a band; they didn’t know anything… Because the focus was on the music.

“Firstly, I didn’t know that I had to become famous to sell it. There’s no rulebook, so I felt like if I was younger, maybe I would have done things differently.

“But I was 27, I was really excited about the music – and therefore, I asked questions about the interviews and the promotion that I was doing. I’d say, ‘What does this entail? Does it focus on the music? Or is it going to make me more famous?’

“And sometimes, when it was more focused on me, I actually would refuse, because I didn’t feel the necessity. I wasn’t looking for the fame; it was more the success that I enjoyed. I’d do the promotion and I’d enjoy talking about the music – but then it was back to work on another album.

“And it was important to me to retain privacy, because I was kind of worried that fame might interfere with my writing, with my music; that it might have changed what I was working on.

“I was guarding everything really carefully and closely.”

Meanwhile, Enya’s isolated life with her cats has been well-documented.

We previously reported how she also bans herself from listening to other artists’ music and once claimed to have never bought an album — to keep her own work as original as possible.

Her songs are painstakingly put together, often overdubbed with vocals more than 500 times.

They are sung in a bizarre mix of languages.

Initially a mixture of English and Gaelic, she now records in Sindarin and Quenya, both created by author JRR Tolkien, and Loxian — which she invented herself with her songwriters.

Bono is Enya’s closest neighbour in Killiney, fitting that she is Ireland’s second best-selling music act, second only to U2.

She said of the U2 frontman: “He’s a good neighbour for me and everyone. He loves a chat.”

ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIPS

Romance is about as high on Enya’s to-do list as going out, describing music as her “first love and my present love”.

She once said: “After a bad day in the studio I’m dark and difficult to be with, I want and need to be on my own. What sort of man would be able to adapt?

“Falling madly in love and getting married would be the most horrific thing that could happen.

“My affairs are with melody and words and beautiful sounds.

“I had partners. But I find long relationships, well, how can I say it without appearing strange?

“I’m too much devoted to my music. Some people think it sounds sad but believe me, I’m happy. I am my music.”

SECURITY BREACHES

The singer has unfortunately suffered from her fame through a variety of concerning incidents and security breaches down the years.

In 1996, a 31-year-old Italian man, who’d moved to Dublin to be near the singer and was seen wearing a photograph of Enya around his neck, stabbed himself after being thrown out of her parents’ pub in Donegal.

In 2005, there were two separate security breaches at the castle that led the singer to beef up her defences – despite having already spent €250,000 on doing so in 1998.

In August of 2005, a stalking incident saw a man caught in the house after he somehow got past security.

The English man was subsequently arrested by gardai.

Within the space of a week, Enya then had to lock herself in a panic room at her home and hit an alarm after finding another man in the house.

The intruder tied up a maid during the two-hour incident but escaped before gardai arrived.

While he opened a safe, he stole only personal items, leaving behind cash and valuables.

A source told the Evening Herald at the time: “We initially thought it was an aggravated burglary but soon realised that it was a stalking situation.

“Enya is hyper-sensitive about security and the place was already like a fortress so this guy did well to get in.

“Apparently she has hired two security guards to patrol at night while there is also a man there with her at all times and she is very nervous, which is understandable.”

The Irish Examiner later reported that Enya was “uncomfortable” staying home alone after the burglary.

They reported she said: “We still have no clues as to who it was and why he did it.

“I suppose this is the downside of my success, some fans say they’ve got life’s answers from me.

“It makes me slightly uncomfortable, this level of interest in me.”

RECENT SIGHTING

However, it hasn’t all been doom and gloom for the musician.

A snap in May of this year showed the 64-year-old stepping out from her castle in a rare sighting.

The vocalist could be seen smiling as she posed for a picture at a wedding at Drumhalla House in Rathmullan, Co Donegal on May 16.

The Donegal Dancers crew Thomas and Emily Colangelo said in a post on social media that it was a “privilege to have them in the crowd”.

They wrote: “There may be a couple familiar faces in the first pic… Some of you may know them as the world famous Clannad & ENYA.”

Fans were quick to gush over the fresh snap on Reddit, which marked her first real public appearance since the Grammys in 2017 – although she did celebrate her sister Moya Brennan getting an honorary doctorate from DCU in 2022.

One loyal fan said: “Omg, I’m so happy to see her finally”, while another added: “I recognise her outfit from this 2016 performance of Orinoco Flow in Japan edit: and Enya’s live US performance of Echoes in Rain — re-worn very stylishly.”

Fans are still clamouring for more music, with the singer’s last release Dark Sky Island dropping in 2015.

One said: “She looks so lovely here, but girl drop the mixtape already omg it’s been 10 years.”

Enya’s appearance at a Donegal wedding may not be the last fans see of her for another eight years.

HIGHEST HONOUR

In her native county, the Council have proposed giving Enya the Freedom of Donegal.

Former Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council Cllr Niamh Kennedy said the council acknowledged her privacy and didn’t expect a public appearance when it came to accepting the potential Freedom of Donegal.

Cllr Kennedy said: “We are all very proud of her and her family. Despite her immense success, this woman remains a figure of mystery, preferring the solace of her Dublin residence to the spotlight, the privacy adding to her mystique, making her a music refuge for listeners all around the world.

“Marked by multi-million album sales and critical acclaim, reflects her unique ability to create music that transcends borders and speaks to the soul.

“Her album Watermark introduced the world to her signature sound, and A Day Without Rain became a global sensation with Only Time providing solace to many during the 9/11 tragedy, when she donated the songs proceeds to the Fire Department NY families.

“We honour Enya with offering her the Freedom of her home county Donegal. We celebrate not just her music but for her to craft a world of tranquillity and beauty through her art.

“We also acknowledge her privacy and don’t expect her to join us here at the County House to honour her but for her to know that we are so very proud and that she deserves the highest honour that her home county can bestow.”

Tyson Fury officially most financially successful UK sportsman in history as his massive earnings are revealed

TYSON FURY has long been considered one of the wealthiest sportsmen in the UK.

And the emergence of some of the Wythenshawe warrior’s stunning finances has shown him to be the wealthiest UK sportsman in history.

Accounts for his ‘Tyson Fury Ltd’ company show The Gypsy King is in fine financial fettle[/caption]

The unaudited abridged accounts for the former two-time heavyweight champion’s ‘Tyson Fury Ltd’ company up until last September were recently published on Companies House.

And it shows that the Gypsy King’s self-named company is worth a whopping £186million.

A staggering £176,691,66 of that figure is made up of investments, with £7,512,199 consisting of cash at the bank and in hand.

The remainder is made up of stocks and debtors.

The value of Fury’s company is likely considerably higher given the fact that the accounts were filed before his multi-million-pound rematch with Oleksandr Usyk last December.

SunSport understands Fury pocketed upwards of £80m for his first defeat to the pound-for-pound king last May.

His purse for the Riyadh rematch is understood to have been less than that figure, but still large enough to exponentially increase the value of his company.

Another cash injection could soon be on the way as Fury has seemingly performed a U-turn on his fifth retirement from boxing.

On Thursday, he posted a photo of himself in action against Usyk to his Instagram story with the caption: “April 18 2026, Wembley Stadium. The trilogy!”

His post came hours after he told the media in Turkey:” I want my revenge (on Usyk) in England. That’s all I want, a fair shout.

“And I don’t believe I’ve got a fair shout the last two times.

“That’s the one I want but if I don’t get that then it will be [Anthony] Joshua, the biggest British fight that will ever happen.

“It would break all records and sell out 100,000 at Wembley in an hour.

“It’s a fight that I think can happen for sure if I decide to come back and the deal’s right.”

Police have for years tried to crack down on the sex-work industry in Pattaya[/caption]

It was raided two years ago when dozens of women were taken away for questioning.

Local police chief Thanapong Phothi said at the time: “We made the arrest to build confidence in Pattaya’s image among tourists.”

Reece, from Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, has now been jailed for a total of 21 years and six months for a string of offences including putting a 16-year-old girl into prostitution.

He was also fined 30,000 Thai baht (£681) for breaking Thailand’s labour laws and advertising the teenager on the bar’s Facebook page.

Reece had been caught on video providing the price for potential customers to spend time with the teenage girl, Bangkok Criminal Court heard.

Two Thai men who helped run the bar were also jailed for 21 years while a Thai woman was jailed for three years and fined 30,000 Thai baht (£681).

She was found guilty of running an illegal sex business and unregistered company but was cleared of the trafficking charges.

There are strict laws against prostitution in Thailand but they are widely ignored, particularly in tourist hotspots such as Pattaya, dubbed Sin City.

Researchers reckon there could be around 200,000 sex workers sex workers across the country with prostitution contributing $6.4bn to Thailand’s GDP.

There have been repeated attempts by the authorities to crack down on prostitution.

In May police and immigration officers desperate to improve the image of Pattaya arrested 13 nationals from Uzbekistan and Uganda who were working as prostitutes.

Officials said they would be deported.

It comes as a British couple were last month charged with smuggling £1million worth of cannabis out of Thailand.

Sian Warren, 34, and Daniel McDonald, 36, were stopped when they returned to Heathrow.

The Premier League star died alongside his brother André Silva, 26, who played for Portuguese second-tier club Penafiel, after their Lamborghini went off the road in Spain and caught fire late last night.

Local police say they believe one of the supercar’s tyres burst while overtaking another vehicle at around 12.30am today.

Tributes have now poured in for the Liverpool forward, including from Prince William.

The Prince of Wales said: “As part of the footballing family, I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Diogo Jota and his brother.

“Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who knew him.”

Wills has made football a central focus for much of his life, with the royal serving as a patron of the Football Association (FA).

The Aston Villa fan has been pictured at games alongside Prince George, including during both legs of the club’s clash against PSG in the Champions League earlier this year.

Jota’s death tragically comes less than two weeks after he married his long-term partner Rute Cardoso, with whom he had three children: Dinis, Durate, and a daughter born in 2024.

The star played on the left wing and up front for Liverpool after joining from Wolves in 2020 for a fee of £41 million.

Liverpool FC paid a touching tribute to Jota as they said: “Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota.”

They added that everyone at the club is still coming to terms with the “unimaginable loss”.

The Portuguese national football team have said they are “devastated” by the Jota’s death.

They added that he “was not only a fantastic player with almost 50 caps for the national team, but also an extraordinary person who was respected by all his teammates and opponents”.

Ex-player and pundit Gary Neville said: “That is heartbreaking news on Diogo Jota and his brother.

“All my love and best wishes to his family.”

TV presenter Piers Morgan wrote: “He only got married two weeks ago. Heartbreaking.”

FC Porto also paid tribute, saying: “Futebol Clube do Porto is in mourning.

“It is with shock and deep regret that we send our most sincere condolences to the family and friends of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, who was also our youth player. May they rest in peace.”

National teammate Cristiano Ronaldo also paid an emotional tribute to Jota.

The star wrote: “It just doesn’t make sense. Just now you had gotten married.

“To your family, your wife, and your children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world.

“I know you will always be with them. Rest in Peace, Diogo and André. We will all miss you.”

Jota and his wife shared heartwarming pictures of themselves in front of the altar with their kids during their beautiful celebration just 10 days ago.

In the caption, they said: “June 22, 2025. Yes to forever.”

The Instagram post received over 690,000 likes and more than 23,000 comments.

And it included love heart emojis from fellow Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez and Natalia Becker, wife of goalkeeper Alisson.

Fans have also been using the post as a place to pay tribute to the star.

The Premier League described Jota – who won the competition for the first time earlier this year – as a “champion who will be forever missed”.

Following his death, UEFA are set to announce a minute silence during tonight’s Women’s Euros match between Spain and Portugal.

Doherty and Jota were teammates for three years at Wolverhampton Wanderers during what was a very successful period for the club with both men securing moves to bigger clubs in Spurs and Liverpool respectively.

Reflecting on the Portugese forward’s life being so cruelly short, Doherty recalled one moment after they’d secured a crucial win on the pitch.

He said: “I remember exactly what you were saying to me. Can’t believe this.

“What a special player and person. Distraught for all your family and friends.”

Katie McCabe and Robbie Keane have also expressed their condolences as the football world comes to terms with the clinical finisher’s untimely death.

Jamie Carragher is one of many Liverpool greats to have posted on Instagram about the tragic news.

He stated: “Absolutely devastated by the sad news about Diogo Jota. Thoughts are with his wife Rute and their three kids.”

The crash occurred on the A52, near the Zamora municipality of Palacios de Sanabria at around 12:40am.

The dad-of-three star was in a Lamborghini with his brother when the vehicle went off the road and caught fire. Cops said they believe one of the supercar’s tyres burst.

Both men were found dead at the scene, according to the Zamora Provincial Council.

Love Island fans reveal ‘clues’ that ‘prove’ one Islander is being protected by producers from being dumped

LOVE Island fans claim they’ve spotted ‘clues’ that ‘prove’ producers are trying to keep a villa beauty on the show.

Last night, original villa girl Alima and new bombshell Ryan were dumped from the show, prompting some to claim it’s the latest twist designed to save Toni.

Though there’s no evidence of any producer meddling, one armchair sleuth took to Reddit last night to share their theory with other viewers.

They outlined five points which they felt backed up their viewpoint.

The first of which focused on Harrison’s arrival and his opening dates with Malisha and Toni.

Footballer Harrison is based in Miami, while Toni works in Vegas, and the viewer felt the US link gave her an unfair advantage when she was ultimately picked to partner him.

Next, they highlighted Harrison and Toni being sent on the only date of the series so far before a public vote, claiming it was a method of boosting interest in them.

Thirdly, they pointed out a change to the dumping process after the public voted for their least favourite Islanders.

They wrote: “We know Love Island loves making the islanders decide the bottom 3 and if they did Toni would likely have been dumped, instead they go by straight votes and Megan is dumped despite having a strong connection in there.”

The fan alluded to more ‘meddling’ in their fourth point, claiming that by choosing Ben to go first in Sunday’s recoupling it prevented Harrison from picking Helena and leaving Toni single and at risk.

Finally, they flagged last night’s dumping and the fact Islanders weren’t given the chance to stand up for the remaining singletons, which would likely have seen Ben couple with Alima, potentially leading to a reshuffle that would’ve put Toni at risk.

Last night’s scenes played out with newbies Ryan and Billykiss being told to stand in front of their co-stars

The boys were told to stand up if they’d like to recouple with Billykiss.

Conor stood up and said their date went really well and he’d be doing himself a disservice to not explore their connection.

Alima, left uncoupled, then took Billykiss’s place at the front.

The girls then had to stand up if they’d like to recouple with new bombshell Ryan, but none did so.

Due to them both being single, Alima and Ryan were eliminated.

Other fans bought into the theory.

One said: “honestly i can’t argue with this even though i like toni.”

Another wrote: “I wholeheartedly agree. I am sure Toni is a nice girl, but it’s becoming very exhausting.”

The Sun has contacted Love Island for comment.

Sparks flew between influencer Billykiss and personal trainer Dejon when she chose him for a date.

But, back in the villa Meg was left reeling at the thought of Dejon spending time with a new girl

Now, Dejon’s sister Saint is having her say on the situation, taking to TikTok she revealed how she really feels about Meg and her brother’s relationship.

She said: “I love my brother and I’ll support whatever decision he wants to make on Love Island but if he fumbles the bag with Billykiss.

“If he fumbles the bag with her, I’m going to have to stop watching the show. Im going to have to stop watching it.

“I support him in whatever decision he makes, but I’ll be so upset.

“Everyone pray that he chooses Billykiss.”

Last night’s episode saw two islanders dumped from the island in a shocking turn of events.

After gathering around the firepit new bomshells Ryan and Billykiss were told to stand at the front.

The boys were then told to stand up if they’d like to recouple with Billykiss.

Conor stood up, and said that his date went really well with Billykiss and he’d be doing himself a disservice to not explore their connection.

Alima, left uncoupled, then took Billykiss’ place up at the front.

The girls then had to stand up if they’d like to recouple with new bombshell Ryan, but none of the girls stood up.

Now newly single, this left Alima and new bombshell Ryan dumped from the show.

Fans were shocked that Dejon did not stand up to couple up with Billykiss but instead chose to stay with Meg.

Meg has been recently been called out by ITV viewers for her ‘controlling behaviour’ towards Dejon as he explored connections with bombshells Malisha Jordan and Caprice Alexandra.

After her brother’s decision Saint made a follow up post, captioning video: “Welp are prayers were not answered (sad emoji)”

She added: “Clearly him and Meg have a good connection in the villa and he really likes her and she likes him and I’m happy for him.

“Like I said, whatever decision he makes I’m going to root for him, I’m here for him, I love him and I support him, I’ll welcome Meg into the family.”
