Barry Ferguson as Rangers manager branded ‘strange’ as surprised Arsenal icon says ‘it’s no different to me getting job’

RANGERS are on the hunt for a new manager after sacking Philippe Clement.

But an Arsenal legend reckons giving Barry Ferguson the interim gig would be ‘a bit strange.’

Rangers dismissed Clement as boss last night following another disastrous domestic performance.

Having been kept on after the shock Scottish Cup defeat to Queen’s Park a fortnight ago, Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at home to St Mirren proved the final straw for Ibrox chiefs.

Attention will now turn to replaces Clement in the long term.

With club supremos locked in talks over a takeover with San Francisco 49ers chiefs, it’s likely the appointment of a permanent successor to the Belgian will have to wait.

Clement’s No2 Issame Charai has taken first team training this morning but it’s unclear whether or not he will be officially installed in a caretaker manager capacity.

One name that’s been heavily linked with the interim role is Barry Ferguson.

The Rangers legend, 47, had two spells as a player at Ibrox and was club captain.

Ferguson won five league titles with the club as well as five Scottish Cups and five League Cups.

While his playing credentials aren’t in doubt, Ferguson’s managerial career hasn’t reached the same heights.

In 2014, he was placed in caretaker charge of Blackpool following Paul Ince’s sacking and spent four months in the role.

Despite winning just three of his 20 games in charge, Ferguson kept the Seasiders in the Championship.

That summer, he was appointed manager of Clyde and spent just under three years in the role.

Ferguson moved to the Lowland League with Kelty Hearts and guided the club to the SPFL for the firs time but left just ONE DAY after securing that success.

He took the Alloa job in May 2021 but resigned the following February with the team struggling and that do date is his last coaching position.

Ferguson has since undertaken regular media work, appearing as a radio and newspaper pundit.

TalkSPORT host Jim White revealed on his show that he was hearing Ferguson was due to hold talks with Rangers chiefs about taking on the interim role.

That raised Arsenal legend Martin Keown‘s eyebrows.

Appearing on White’s programme, he questioned what credentials Ferguson has to take on the Rangers job – other than the fact he was a prominent player for the club.

Keown, who has never been a manager, suggested that it wouldn’t be any different to a huge club appointing HIM as boss – which he described as ‘a bit strange.’

Keown said: “I’m concerned. Has he got the necessary credentials?

“It’s OK being a top player at the football club, but where’s he managed? Alloa?

“Does that give him the necessary tools to do the job in the way that they want? Or is it just a case of bringing in one of their own?

“It looks very much like that’s the case, doesn’t it? Go back to players who have represented the club.

“In a way, if he’s working in the media, it’d be no different than bringing me in to take over a top job somewhere. It’d be seen as a bit strange.

Jim White’s co-host Simon Jordan, the former Crystal Palace chairman, agreed that Ferguson’s history with Rangers must be playing a central role in any potential decision to make him manager.

Jordna said: “That must be part of the thinking. It must be part of the thinking because if you’re looking at a person who has a win record of 27% at a League One Scottish Club you’re not looking at someone who has a proven track record.

“You could make the case, neither did Steven Gerrard. He came in as a fledgling new manager, was brought in to galvanise the spirit of the football club based upon the credentials as a player.

“I don’t know Barry Ferguson as a person, I don’t know what his capabilities are, I don’t know how he operates.

“What I do know is that you look at his record, it doesn’t suggest that a job of the scale of Rangers, besides the fact he’s played for them, would be something you’d naturally consider Barry Ferguson for.

“It has to be because he was a Rangers player. Now what does that do? If you play to the gallery, you’ll never please it. You have to be definite, definitely right or definitely wrong. Ideally definitely right buy you’ve got to be definite in your thinking.”

TUI reveals the cheap new countries Brits will be holidaying in – as they’re priced out of Europe and Turkey

TURKEY is no longer one of the cheapest holiday destinations for Brits, the boss of TUI has warned.

CEO Sebastian Ebel explained how the ‘budget’ holiday destination has seen higher costs in recent months.

Turkey is falling as being the most affordable holiday destination for Brits[/caption]

Destinations like Argentina could soon be on the menu for Brits with TUI[/caption]

Rising inflation has made the destination not as affordable with last summer seeing “half-empty restaurants” as well as usually-full hotels dropping to 70 per cent capacity.

Kıvanç Meriç from the Association of Turkish Travel Agencies (TÜRSAB) said their main selling point was the “price advantage” over other countries.

He told local media: “We have lost this in the past two years, leading to a 30 to 35 percent gap compared to our competitors.

“As a result, we are losing strength against countries like Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco and even Greece.”

Instead, TUI is looking to expand to other destinations that offer good-value holidays.

Sebastian said during the conference: “Our core is leisure, but it’s not only sun and beach, it’s everything about leisure.”

Some of the suggested destinations include Southeast Asia and China.

The tour operator revealed earlier this year their plans to double the hotels in Asia by 2027, with more across Sri Lanka, Thailand and the Maldives.

And more flights were added to Thailand due to demand, with the destination named a top 2025 hotspot as well as featuring in the new season of White Lotus.

But TUI could even extend out to places like Latin America, with destinations such as Argentina, Mexico and Colombia.

He previously said: “Latin America represents a significant growth opportunity for us, and through our digital platforms, we are poised to meet the region’s rising demand, and scale quickly.

“TUI is ready to make a major impact in Latin America.”

Even Africa is seeing huge demand, following the launch of Senegal holidays in 2022 and new holidays to Kenya last year.

The Sun visited Senegal on the first flight out with TUI – here’s what we thought.

And here’s our verdict on TUI’s Kenya holidays, which are a mix of beach and safari.

Along with expansion in Cape Verde and Zanzibar, Ebel said: “There is a lot of growth outside the region of Europe.

“I very much believe in Africa.”

For shorter haul holidays, TUI has said they are seeing more bookings for non-Spain destinations due to places like Majorca and Canaries being “full”.

Ebel said: “In summer, there is high demand for Bulgaria, Tunisia and Egypt.

What we see is more people going to Egypt in winter [instead of the Canary Islands].

Neil Swanson, who is the TUI UK and Ireland managing director, agreed: “Looking ahead to 2025, we’re seeing growing interest in North African destinations.”

Here are some other destinations set to be big this year.

Bank giant with 14 million customers makes big change to accounts TODAY

A BANK giant with 14million customers is making a big change to accounts from today.

HSBC will reduce the interest rates on its easy-access Premier Savings account today, February 24.

HSBC bank branch with ATMs offering free cash withdrawals.
HSBC is making changes
Reuters

The rate for balances below £50,000 will drop from 1.98% to 1.74%.

And that is not all, HSBC has said the rates on this savings account will again change in April.

In two months, the interest will drop from 1.74% to 1.98%.

An easy access savings account lets you get your hands on your cash without restrictions.

There is usually no charge for withdrawing money from your account.

HSBC’s Premier Savings account is only available to those who qualify for its Premier banking services.

Typically, customers must have £50,000 already in an HSBC account or make £100,000 a year.

HSBC will also lower the rates on its more accessible Flexible Saver account from 1.49% to 1.34% on April 17.

A flexible savings account allows you to save and access your money without a fixed term.

You can deposit and withdraw money as often as you like.

At 1.34%, HSBC’s offer is at the lower end of what is on the market.

Chip Instant Access Account offers a 4.85% AER, with a minimum deposit of £1.

Meanwhile, Hargreaves Lansdown offers 4.51% AER, and the minimum deposit is also £1.

ALL CHANGE

It comes after the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), the BoE’s rate-setters reduced the base rate from 4.75% to 4.5% earlier this month.

The base rate is used by lenders to determine the interest rates offered to customers on savings and borrowing costs.

A base rate cut can mean that mortgage rates are lowered, which is good news for homeowners.

But savers can be left with the short end of the stick as the interest rate they earn on their savings can also drop.

Markets are expecting the base rate to drop as low as 4% by the end of the year, which would see the interest rate on the Saver account reduce even further.

Of course, if the base rate increases again then the account will mirror this.

Numerous banks have been cutting their savings rates following the Bank of England’s decision.

Barclays  slashed the rates on its Everyday Saver and Rainy Day saver accounts.

For the Everyday Saver, the interest rate has been lowered from 1.51% to 1.26% on balances up to £10,000.

The Rainy Day Saver, which is for Barclays Blue Rewards members and Premier Banking customers, is reducing its rate from 5.12% to 4.87%.

Where to find the best savings rates

Many savings accounts offer miserly rates meaning that money is generating little or no return.

However, there are ways to get your cash working hard. Sun Savers Editor Lana Clements explains how to make sure you money is getting the best interest rate.

Easy access savings accounts offer flexibility for customers, meaning they can dip in and out of cash when needed. However, the caveat is that rates can change at any time.

If you’re keeping your money in an easy access account, you’ll need to keep checking whether it’s the best paying account for your circumstances and move if not.

Check in at least once a month to see what is happening in the market.

Check what is offered by your bank – sometimes the best rates are for customers only.

But do search the wider market as often top savings accounts are offered by lesser known providers.

Comparison sites are a good place to check for the top rates. Try Moneyfactscompare.co.uk or Moneysupermarket.

You can search by different account type. You’ll usually get a better interest rate if you can lock your money away for a fixed amount of time, but it’s always a good idea to keep some money in an easy access account in case of emergencies.

Don’t overlook regular savings accounts often pay some of the best rates, but you’ll need to commit to monthly payments. This can be a great way to get into a savings habit while earning top rates at the same time.

Scott, 40, regularly shows off some incredible outfits when attending glitzy events.

But this time, she opted for a more unusual look as she wore a spiky hooded jacket.

It is a creation by Asian-American designer Chet Lo and was featured a London Fashion Week last year.

The jacket is a part of the designer’s “Terracotta” collection and features the brand’s iconic spikes.

The former Lioness paired the item with a grey skirt, tights and black-heeled shoes.

She could be seen beaming as she arrived for the fashion show.

Scott was also joined by British athlete Imani-Lara Lansiquot for the runway.

Lansiquot, 27, mainly competes in the 100m but claimed silver in the 4x100m at the Paris Olympics last year.

She stunned in a glimmering full-length dress.

Scott did post on social media to hail designer LABRUM who uses trends to tell West African narratives.

She wrote: “Yess, LABRUM London absolutely smashed it once again.”

Scott saw rapper Wretch 32 and rapper and writer Akala perform in her previous appearance.

She and Glynne looked loved up as they were snapped in trendy long coats.

They have been dating since 2023 and recently moved in with each other.

Scott told The Times: “I wake up next to my partner, Jess, who has become the same person as me over the past year and a half.

“She can see what going to the gym does for me mentally, so she’ll do the same.

“I love seeing [Jess] thrive, I didn’t want to be photographed with Rihanna because I wanted the spotlight to be on Jess.”

Shoppers ‘in heaven’ after spotting giant packs of Tunnock’s teacakes for just 50p

TUNNOCK’S famous Snowballs have been spotted on sale for just 50p at a major supermarket.

The British favourite was spotted in the superstore over the weekend, for nearly 90% off its retail price.

Shoppers reported a stack of the marshmallow treats on sale at an Asda in Northern Ireland.

A snap of the deal was reportedly taken at the Omagh store and posted on the Hotdeals UK Facebook page.

The box of 18 Tunnock’s Snowballs was reduced to just 50p, or just 2.8p each.

The coconut marshmallow favourites normally sell for £4.50, saving shoppers £4.

The price of Asda’s Tunnock’s Snowballs is the lowest on the market we could see with other retailers offering pricier deals on the famous chocolate.

An eight pack of Snowballs is priced at £2.75 on the Sainsbury’s website.

Morrison’s is selling four Snowballs online for £1, and Iceland is offering six for £1.50.

Tesco are selling eight Snowballs for £2, but they’ve sold out online.

Shoppers keen to get their hands on the deal flocked to their local Asda, but many were left disappointed.

“Not in our Asda,” one said.

“Love them but not seen them,” a second reported.

A third joked they wanted 20 boxes: “Could you deliver £10 worth to me please? I’m Portland, Dorset.”

Others offered tips on how to store both Tunnock’s Snowballs and Teacakes, saying they taste great out of the freezer.

“Both teacake and snowball are wonderful, frozen and unfrozen, all a matter of choice,” they wrote.

“I prefer teacake unfrozen, but snowballs are amazing after a couple of hours in the freezer.”

Supermarkets often reduce items to clear shelves and make way for new stock. Or they may have excess stock they need to sell.

How to save at Asda

Shop the budget range

Savvy shopper Eilish Stout-Cairns recommends that shoppers grab items from Asda’s Just Essentials range.

She said: “Asda’s budget range is easy to spot as it’s bright yellow! Keep your eyes peeled for yellow and you’ll find their Just Essentials range.

“It’s great value and I’ve found it has a much wider selection of budget items compared to other supermarkets.

 Sign up to Asda Rewards

The savvy-saver also presses on the importance of signing up to Asda’s reward scheme.

She said: “Asda Rewards is free to join and if you shop at Asda you should absolutely sign up.

“As an Asda Rewards member, you’ll get exclusive discounts and offers, and you’ll also be able to earn 10% cashback on Star Products.

“This will go straight into your cashpot, and once you’ve earned at least £1, you can transfer the money in your cashpot into ASDA vouchers.

We’ve previously rounded up the best supermarket loyalty schemes – including the ones that will save you the most money.

Look out for booze deals

Eilish always suggests that shoppers looking to buy booze look out for bargain deals.

She said: “Asda often has an alcohol offer on: buy six bottles and save 25%.

“The offer includes selected bottles with red, white and rose options, as well as prosecco. There are usually lots of popular bottles included, for example, Oyster Bay Hawkes Bay Merlot, Oyster Bay Hawkes Bay Merlot and Freixenet Prosecco D.O.C.

“Obviously, the more expensive the bottles you choose, the more you save.”

Join Facebook groups

The savvy saver also recommends that fans of Asda join Facebook groups to keep in the know about the latest bargains in-store.

Eilish said: “I recommend joining the Latest Deals Facebook Group to find out about the latest deals and new launches in store.

“Every day, more than 250,000 deal hunters share their latest bargain finds and new releases.

“For example, recently a member shared a picture of Asda’s new Barbie range spotted in store.

“Another member shared the bargain outdoor plants she picked up, including roses for 47p, blackcurrant bushes for 14p and topiary trees for 14p.”

But this means stock availability and price can vary between stores. Cheap deals like this are also snapped up quickly.

TUNNOCK’S TAKES SWIPE AT RIVALS

Tunnock’s have been in the news in recent weeks for a new advert taking a swipe at rival chocolate brands.

The Scottish biscuit firm teamed up with Taggart star Alex Norton to investigate other chocolate makers “getting away with murder” by shrinking their treats.

In a series of radio adverts he declares Tunnock’s will never reduce the size of their iconic teacakes, snowballs, caramel logs and caramel wafers.

Several chocolate bars including Galaxy and Cadbury have shrunk in recent times while their price has remained the same or gone up.

The companies behind the products have blamed the rising cost of materials for the growth of shrinkflation.

However Tunnock’s has said it will never compromise on the quality or size of its world-famous range.

In one of the ads, Norton, 75, who played Detective Chief Inspector Matt Burke in Taggart between 2002 and 2010, says: “I knew what that woman meant when she said Tunnock’s were on the side of the ordinary shopper.

“She was showing me her box of Tunnock’s snowballs. ‘Tunnock’s are keeping them the same size, making Tunnock’s snowballs smaller would be a crime,’ she said.”

“I said ‘Don’t worry missus, I’m on the case and I’m watching all the downsizers’. There’s no shrinkflation in Tunnock’s.”

Fergus Loudon, sales director at Tunnock’s, said: “All over the country people are looking at old familiar products which are suddenly a lot smaller and many of them are saying, ‘They’re getting away with murder.’

“So who better to deal with that than Scotland’s answer to Poirot.”

How to save cash on your food shop

Money saving experts at HSBC UK have revealed their top tips to saving cash on your food shop.

1. Set a budget
Creating a budget will help to stretch your budget. Start by working out how much you spent on food over the last three months, then each month you get paid, set aside a certain amount for food.

2. Plan your meals
Make a list of your main meals for the coming week, including the ingredients you need, and stick to it. Don’t get drawn into offers for things that you don’t need. If you already have some food leftover from the week before, try to see what you can do with that first.

3. Think about when and where you shop
It’s best to shop on a full stomach so you don’t get tempted. Shopping less often can help you to think about what you buy and it may help you to stick to your budget.

4. Go online
Shopping online is a good and easy way to manage your budget. It can also help to track expenses, whilst also preventing impulse buys.

Comedian Will Burns, 25, showed off impressions including David Attenborough and Gary Barlow.

The Geordie duo were left impressed and rewarded the self-described BGT superfan with their coveted Golden Buzzer.

As per the show’s rules, this sent Will straight through to the live shows.

Meanwhile, not everyone was happy with Ant and Dec‘s choice of Golden Buzzer.

One person penned on social media: “I feel like Ant and Dec only pressed the golden buzzer because they know will is a huge fan of the show if he wasn’t a super fan I don’t think they would have pressed it.”

Another fumed:” I never in my life have seen such an undeserved golden buzzer in my entire life, he wasn’t even funny.

“The only thing i laughed at is when ant & dec pressed it, me and my mate burst out laughing because of how such a bad audition could get this golden buzzer.

“If it was me i would’ve pressed the red buzzer. taking the p***.”

While a third remarked: “oh god not you ant & dec, he’s not worth a golden buzzer.. two in the first episode??? i hate this so much.”

Elsewhere, Simon Cowell pressed his Golden Buzzer for Scots singer Vinnie McKee.

However, fans were left underwhelmed by his performance of I’m Gonna Be by The Proclaimers.

Despite thinking Vinnie was a good singer, they questioned the style of the rendition.

One person wrote: “No, no, no. Good voice but ruining that song.”

Another said: “What does singing the song like this add to the song?

“It’s cheap and nasty. Sing it properly ffs.”

Britain's Got Talent 2025 - Golden Buzzer Acts in Week 1

Britain’s Got Talent is back for series 18 with the search on for the next act to perform at the Royal Variety Performance.

The first episode saw two Golden Buzzers awarded – courtesy of Simon Cowell and presenters Ant & Dec respectively.

So who received a Golden Buzzer?

Simon opted for singer Vinnie McKee, who performed a rendition of The Proclaimers’ hit I’m Gonna Be.

Prior to BGT, Vinnie had been performing at a holiday camp since he was 18.

Meanwhile, hosts Ant and Dec pressed theirs for comedian and impressionist Will Burns.

The 25-year-old is a self-confessed BGT superfan – whose impressions included David Attenborough, Gary Barlow and Big Brother narrator Marcus Bentley.

A third fumed:  “Nope, you dont mess with 500 miles!”

Other notable moments shown on Saturday included Japanese act Akira Ohashi – who left fans disgusted after stripping down and performing naked.

While judges and viewers alike were unnerved by US performer Auzzy Blood’s gruesome performance.

Britain’s Got Talent continues on ITV1 and ITVX.

Earlier this week, Chloe went public with her new man, Ruben Moreira, as she moves on from her former romance with Toby Aromolaran, 25.

Now they are enjoying their next sun-soaked getaway and a source was first to tell us: “It’s early days for Chloe and Ruben but they have known each other a while through Liam Reardon and they get on like a house on fire.

“They holidayed in Australia together in a big group at the start of the year and romance blossomed there.

“Now they are on holiday together in Dubai, so it’s heating up.

“Chloe thinks he’s gorgeous and she knows he’s a decent bloke as she trusts Liam wouldn’t be mates with someone who wasn’t a good guy.”

Chloe has now taken to her Instagram Stories to capture their cute date night at Shimmers eatery, with a plate of fresh fish and salad seen on the table.

Another snap saw her posing for a sultry selfie with the caption: “Get me to bed with some Brooklyn Nine Nine now.”

Previously, following her festive getaway to Australia, she hailed their trip: “The actual best place in the world with the best people in the world.”

Chloe, who shot to fame on Love Island’s 2021 season, posted a picture on her Instagram Stories of her and Ruben just last week.

Fans immediately took this to mean she was “soft launching” her new relationship.

Taking to Reddit, one wrote: “Love that for her. That’s literally so fun for the four of them as friends, hope it all works out!!”

While another said: “So happy for Chloe.”

This one added: “This is great news.”

Chloe met Ruben through fellow Love Island 2021 co-star Liam Reardon, as the two men are friends.
