THE HISTORY OF DUNNES STORES

DUNNES Stores opened its first store on Patrick Street in Cork in 1944 - and it was an instant hit.

Shoppers from all over the city rushed to the store to snap up quality clothing at pre-war prices in Ireland’s first ‘shopping frenzy’.

During the excitement, a window was forced in and the police had to be called to help control the crowds hoping to bag founder Ben Dunne’s ‘Better Value’ bargains.

Dunnes later opened more stores in the 1950s and began to sell groceries in 1960 – starting with apples and oranges.

The retailer said: “Fruit was expensive at the time and Ben Dunne yet again offered Better Value than anyone else in town.

“Over time, our food selection has grown and that spirit of good value has remained strong.

“Now we offer a wide range of carefully-sourced foods from both local Irish suppliers and overseas.”

The retailer’s first Dublin store opened its doors in 1957 on Henry Street and a super store on South Great Georges Street was unveiled in 1960.

They added: “In 1971, our first Northern Irish store opened, and many others soon followed.

“Expansion continued in the 1980s in Spain, and later into Scotland and England.”

Dunnes now has 142 stores and employs 15,000 people.

Tanaiste Simon Harris announces €4million aid package for Palestinian children during ‘window of hope’

TANAISTE Simon Harris has announced a €4million funding package for Palestinian children during what he has called a “window of hope”.

The package includes €3million for children’s education, €700,000 to human rights organisations and €300,000 to support services and vulnerable families.

The Tanaiste speaking earlier today, said: “The funding I am announcing today will help deliver access to education at a time when so many children’s lives are being destroyed by this catastrophic war.”

Harris said this announcement brings Ireland’s support of the Palestinian people to €26million this year and to almost €80million since October 2023.

This package comes following warnings by the Tanaiste that the next few days represent a “window of hope for delivering a ceasefire”.

Neale Richmond, Minister of State with responsibility for International Development and Diaspora, welcomed the news.

He said: “Ireland is supporting Palestinian and Israeli organisations to defend human rights at a time when they are under immense pressure.”

The funds will be used to train teachers, provide school materials and rebuild schools that have been damaged or destroyed.

During the announcement, Tanaiste Harris reiterated Ireland’s support of the Palestinian people.

He said: “Our support for schools is a critical part of Ireland’s longstanding partnership with Palestine. In Gaza, our ongoing support for UNRWA continues to deliver vital remote learning to almost 300,000 children living in a war zone.

“Since Israel launched a military operation in the West Bank in January, more than 40,000 people have been displaced. It is vital that the international community maintains its focus on the violence and displacement occurring in the West Bank.”

Hopeful regarding future peace talks, he added: “I welcome the indications of potential peace-talks, which I discussed at length this week with the Prime Minister of Qatar, who was is playing a leading role in the ceasefire efforts.

“It is vital now that all parties do everything they can to find a way forward and put these peace-talks on a formal footing.”

I saved myself £2.3k by creating bespoke fitted wardrobe with flatpack Argos furniture – and it only took a weekend

A SAVVY mum saved £2,000 after creating a bespoke fitted wardrobe using Argos and B&Q bargains.

Claire Douglas wanted to give her son’s bedroom a revamp, creating a practical and tasteful space where he could sit and do his homework – and game, of course.

The final result looks expensive on a budget[/caption]

But she was determined to complete the project on a budget, which meant that commissioning a carpenter to build bespoke fitted wardrobes was out of the question.

Instead, the interior designer purchased two standard flatpack wardrobes from Argos for around £80 each and styled them using MDF wall panel sheets from Panels by Sofia.

Claire, of Claire Douglas Styling, explains: “As well as a desk, we really needed somewhere to store clothes in my eldest son’s bedroom.

“He’d had a freestanding clothes rail for years which was a bit wobbly and the less-worn clothes were starting to collect dust.

“I love the look of built-in wardrobes so I came up with this storage hack to make the most of the space we had available.

“The beauty of this DIY fitted wardrobe project is that you don’t need many tools as you can get the MDF sheets pre-cut and sent to you.

“This also saves a lot of effort and makes it an achievable weekend project for a novice.”

In total, Claire’s project cost just £912.By comparison, Checkatrade revealed the average cost of a standard fitted wardrobe in 2025 is £3,250 meaning the savvy mum saved £2,338.

Sharing her top tips and learnings from the DIY project, she said: “This was such a satisfying DIY project and I was able to save hundreds compared to if I was to have bespoke wardrobes fitted.

“If you need multiple panels, look into whether you can save money by buying a larger sheet and cutting it into multiple panels rather than buying many smaller ones. The pre-primed panels are a game changer too and will save you so much time and effort.

“To bring the overall look together, I’d recommend adding coving at the top of the MDF sheet where it meets the ceiling as this gives the appearance of truly built-in bedroom furniture.

“It also creates a really neat finish. You can buy pre-cut corners which are quick and easy to attach.”

Here, she breaks down exactly how she created her DIY fitted wardrobe set-up in seven simple steps.

Step 1: Building and positioning the wardrobes

Claire said: “Before I started, I made sure the wardrobes would fit well within the space by measuring the ceiling height and width.

“I sketched out the wardrobe design which helped me to visualise how everything would come together.

“The freestanding wardrobes I chose were quite short, so I built a frame above them for additional storage.”

Step 2: Building a CLS timber base frame

“To give the wardrobes a sturdy and level foundation, I constructed a CLS timber frame for them to sit on”, Claire continued.

“As I was building a desk in between, I only wanted the base under the wardrobes, with a gap in the middle for the desk.

“If you are creating a full wall of fitted wardrobes, build your frame the entire length of the wall.

“To build the CLS base frame, I measured the footprint of the wardrobes and cut the CLS to size.

“Then, I assembled the frame using screws, ensuring it was level and secure. I fixed the frame to the floor to prevent movement and then placed the wardrobes onto the base frame.”

Step 3: Framing the gap

Claire then filled the gap between the top of the wardrobes and the ceiling with a timber frame to “create the perfect fit”.

She added: “Depending on the height of your freestanding wardrobes, you might only need to fix a baton along the top of the wardrobe edge or onto the ceiling to attach the tops of the MDF cladding sheets to.

Claire broke down her the project in seven simple steps[/caption]

“To build the frame, I measured the gap between the wardrobe tops and the ceiling and constructed a simple CLS timber frame to fit within this space. I then secured the frame to both the wardrobes and the ceiling with fixings.”

Step 4: Fit your MDF wall panels

Claire then attached the MDF wall panels.

“We chose traditional bead and butt style panels – to the wardrobe sides, front frame and top gap to complete the built-in look”, she said.

“The panels came pre-primed which saved a lot of time, effort and cost and can be cut-to-size and delivered.

“I used grab adhesive and screws to fix the panels to the wardrobes and CLS timber frame, making sure all edges aligned neatly for a seamless finish. Once the side panels were fitted, I covered the joins by attaching a piece of ribbed strip moulding over the edge.”

“To create a cohesive finish, I attached a large MDF panel to the wall in-between the wardrobes to create a backdrop for the desk.”

Step 5: Fitting an MDF desk between the wardrobes

To incorporate a desk between the wardrobes, Claire then measured the space in between and cut an MDF panel to be used as the desk surface.

“I then fixed the desk securely to the wardrobe sides using brackets and a spirit level to ensure the desk was level”, she added.

Step 6: Extending the wardrobe to the ceiling

Claire said: “To fill in the gap above each wardrobe, I attached floor to ceiling MDF panels to the existing wardrobe doors.

“When cutting the MDF panels to match the width of the wardrobe doors, I allowed a gap so that the outer edge of the existing door could go inside the wardrobe when fully open.”

To copy Claire's DIY project, you will need:

Materials:

Tools

  • Saw
  • Drill
  • Screwdriver
  • Measuring tape
  • Spirit level
  • Caulking gun
  • Wall scanner

Step 7: The finishing touches

For her final step, Claire filled the screw holes and seams with wood filler and allowed them to dry before sanding everything until it was smooth.

She added: “I then applied two coats of paint to the wardrobes and desk.

“Finally, I installed our chosen door handles to the doors using sticky adhesive pads.”

600 families to be moved out of IPAS centres as charity calls for relocation of over 2,000 people to be delayed

SOME 600 families with status to remain in Ireland will be moved out of International Protection Accommodation Services in the coming months, the Department of Justice has said.

Charity workers close to the 2,042 people who have received notice to leave have asked that the exits be delayed.

The Department has said the families were informed about the planned relocation a year ago and were sent a follow-up letter in March.

The first move will take place tomorrow and will continue on a phased basis for the rest of the summer.

The transfer procedure began under the previous government when the Department of Children was responsible for the accommodation of international protection applicants.

In the past 18 months, over 7,000 people with status have left IPAS accommodation, after the Department of Justice took over responsibility.

A spokesperson for the department said that everyone who had been notified would be moved, except for “very rare circumstances” such as medical reasons.

The Department of Housing has confirmed they are seeing an increased demand for homes from families who have recently left Direct Provision accommodation.

The Government has acknowledged that while numbers arriving had reduced compared to 2024, they said: “There is still on average 1,000 people applying for international protection every month.”

A statement from the Department of Justice said: “Of our nearly 33,000 residents, approximately 5,300 people have completed their application process and have received a positive decision. This means they have a legal status that allows them to remain in Ireland, and to work.

“It also means that they are no longer entitled to IPAS accommodation. However, they are now able to access the full range of housing support available to all Irish residents. These housing supports are not available to people who are still going through the international protection application process.”

Some of the families who have been told that they have to leave today and have accepted a transfer to emergency accommodation remain unaware where they will end up, according to the Irish Refugee Council.

APPROACH CONCERNS

In a statement, it said: “We are particularly concerned that families who do not accept a transfer will be pushed into already overstretched homeless services and are at high risk of rough sleeping during this transition.”

In a statement, the Irish Refugee Council said the rise in homelessness among people leaving Direct Provision was as a direct result of Government policy.

At a recent Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Director of the Dublin Region Homeless Executive Mary Hayes also expressed concern about the approach.

She said: “We are concerned about institutional discharge from one institution into another. That does not seem to be well-thought through or a planned approach to homelessness. That is particularly so with IPAS which is driving about a quarter of the presentations of single homelessness.”

Alan Reynolds hopes to keep a hold of Bohemians star despite strong interest from English clubs

ALAN Reynolds is hoping James Clarke will stay at Bohemians until at least the end of the season.

Online rumours claimed the Meath man was on the verge of joining Grimsby Town only for the player to have a change of heart.

The 24-year-old has scored in both of Bohs’ last two matches

But Bohs have not received a bid for the attacker who scored an injury-time equaliser against Sligo Rovers last Friday and Rennie suggested there was no get-out clause in his contract.

Bohs have offered him a new deal and, while it is unlikely he will sign it, the club hope to have him for the remainder of the season as they cause European qualification.

Rennie said: “There’s interest in him. But look, he’s a Bohs player at the minute, and he will be unless things change, but I haven’t heard any differently.

“I suppose it’s been tricky for him, at the start of the season, he wasn’t in the team and he had to work and be patient and get in.

“Now he’s in the team, there’s interest in him. I’d love to keep him, but he’s a 24-year-old lad who probably has ambitions of going and playing across the water.”

Rennie claimed the club was not under pressure to sell rather than lose him for nothing at the end of the season.

He said: “It depends on what’s on offer, isn’t it, whether the board feels it’s worth cashing in and taking the money, but they don’t.

“They want James Clarke, they really like James Clarke as a player and would love him to stay beyond, so we’ll see what happens in that.”

Rennie would not be drawn on whether a return to Dalymount was on the cards for St Pat’s left-back Anto Breslin but admitted he wanted competition at left-back following the departure of Kian Best. But he dismissed a link with Pat Hickey of Galway United.

He said: “There’s nothing close but I wouldn’t mind maybe one more. If one came available, we’d look at it.”

Friday’s game against St Pat’s may come too early for new signing Douglas James-Taylor to start following his move from Walsall who had loaned him to sister club Drogheda United for the past year.

He said: “Dougie is one we’ve been looking at a while. Once we were made aware that he was available, it was a no-brainer. He’s a really good centre-forward, wants to score goals and is the right age for us.

“I think the big message for us is we’re trying to build something. You can see by the age of the signings that we’re making.

Now, that’s not to say we wouldn’t sign a 30-plus player for experience but we’re trying to build something. And if given time, we feel it’ll help everyone.”

Lys Mousset fell into the experienced category but the former Premier League striker has left after just one goal, a late winner away to Sligo Rovers. Rennie feels the risk was worth it.

He said: “I think it was, because if it had worked out for everyone…it was great for the league at the time, all the publicity, just getting him fit was the issue.

“Lys struggled to settle, we’ve struggled to get him fit, get him on the pitch. I think it’s probably one that everyone could see happening, let’s be honest.

“But he scored a great goal down in Sligo, which I’m delighted we can look back on, that we got three points. It just hasn’t worked. And he had a conversation with us to say, ‘look, I think it’s the right time for us to go’.”

‘Trying to keep up with the big man’ – Top GAA talisman beams in pic with Man Utd star during warm weather training

And the Naomh Mairtin man took the chance to take a photo with the Dane.

Mulroy said: “Trying to keep up with the Big Man @rasmus.hoejlund”

2025 proved to be a historic year for Mulroy and his Wee County teammates.

The peak of their season came when they beat Meath to win the Leinster football championship for the first time since 1957.

However, the county board will have a task on their hands to replicate that success in 2026 following the departure of manager Ger Brennan.

The former Dub stepped down on Tuesday after two years at the helm.

He is odds-on to replace Dessie Farrell in the Dublin hotseat, who departed as Sky Blues boss after their All-Ireland quarter-final loss to Tyrone on Saturday night.

Brennan won All-Irelands with the Dubs in 2011 and 2013, but had to retire from inter-county football in 2015 due to an achilles injury.

Louth also won the Leinster under-20 title this summer, and were beaten in the minor provincial decider by Offaly

And in a statement released on Tuesday, Brennan insisted the future is bright for the Wee County despite his exit.

He said: “On behalf of the Louth senior football team management and staff, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for what has been an extraordinary journey with this incredible organisation.

“I want to thank Chairperson Seán McClean for his unwavering support – always engaged, energetic, and available in his commitment to all things Louth GAA.

“His leadership and dedication have been instrumental in everything we achieved together.

“My sincere appreciation goes to the Louth County Board, the Louth Clubs, and all the staff at Darver for their tremendous support throughout these past two years.

“The foundation of support you provided made our work possible.

“Most importantly, I want to express my profound gratitude to the Louth Senior Footballers. It has been an absolute privilege to be part of your journey these past two years.

“What you have accomplished for the Gaels of County Louth will be remembered and celebrated for generations to come. Your dedication, heart, and commitment have made history.

“As you embark on the next chapter of your journey, I have complete confidence that fresh perspectives will bring new energy and insights to your honest and hardworking team. The future is bright for Louth football.”
