Who will Emma Raducanu play next at Wimbledon if she beats Aryna Sabalenka?

EMMA RADUCANU is looking to return to the form that saw her famously win the US Open in 2021.

The Brit put in arguably her best performance since that day when she knocked former champion Marketa Vondrousova in the second round.

But her prize for that victory is a test as tough as they come – against world no.1 Aryna Sabalenka on Centre Court.

However, with a host of seeds already out, the draw could really open up for Raducanu if she picks up a shock win.

Who will Emma Raducanu face if she beats Aryna Sabalenka?

Emma Raducanu will take on Belgium’s Elise Mertens if she is able to knock out Sabalenka.

The 24th seed had an impressive victory over the popular Elina Svitolina in the third round, to show she won’t be daunted on the big stage.

Mertens previously beat Hungary’s Anna Bondar in the first round and Belarussian Aliksandra Sasnovich in the second.

Who else could Emma Raducanu face at Wimbledon?

Raducanu is unlikely to get ahead of herself, but a second Grand Slam final would look more than just a pipe dream if she overcomes Sabalenka.

Should the no.1 seed go out, the highest ranked player left in the tournament will be seventh seed Mirra Andreeva.

However, the Russian teen prodigy is on the other side of the draw along with the dangerous Iga Swiatek.

Four-time French Open champion Swiatek hammered Raducanu at both Roland Garros and the Australian Open earlier this year.

But the Pole is known to be a weaker opponent on grass and, in any case, would not meet Raducanu until the final.

Sarah showed off her bottom by sharing a snap from behind of her wearing a tiny pair of matching shorts.

The star was seen posing for a string of photos from her dressing room and behind-the-scenes of the Paramount Plus show.

She captioned it: “Who is ready to WERK today?”

The official RuPaul Drag Race Instagram account shared a photo of Sarah alongside RuPaul, Michelle Visage and Carson Kressley.

The caption read: “In every generation, there’s a chosen one… and she’s guest judging #AllStars10! Watch an all-new episode with Sarah Michelle Gellar — streaming now on Paramount Plus.”

Sarah’s TV appearance comes a few months after she was spotted looking sombre after Buffy co-star Michelle Trachtenberg‘s sadly passed away aged 39.

Michelle’s body was found in her New York City apartment on Wednesday, just days after she posted selfies that left fans concerned for her health.

Sarah, who played the role of Buffy Summers in the hit series alongside Michelle who played her on-screen sister, took to social media with a heartbreaking tribute.

She wrote: “Listen. I love you. I will always love you. The hardest thing in this world, is to live in it. I will be brave. I will live… for you.”

I stayed at the oldest hotel in England which is right by the Cotswolds

STARING up at the long eyelashes of a giraffe’s head, I wonder if I’ve mistakenly walked into an African safari lodge . . . in Wiltshire.

But as I survey the luxurious lobby — with cosy couches and tinkling piano music — I decide it’s just what I need to soothe my Glastonbury hangover.

Less than 50 miles from Worthy Farm, The Old Bell Hotel in Malmesbury is the perfect spot for some post-party pampering this summer.

Tucked away in the shadows of the 12th-century Malmesbury Abbey, which once had the highest spire in Europe, The Old Bell first opened in 1220 and lays claim to being the oldest hotel in England.

Unlike other Cotswolds hotels, which, let’s be honest, can sometimes be a little twee, The Old Bell is like the circus has come to town.

Owned by Texan antiques dealer Whit Hanks and his wife Kim since 2021, in a few short years, they’ve turned it into a gorgeous, if a little eccentric, country hotel.

Ancient honeyed stone walls, mullion windows and draping wisteria give way to a quirky, colourful interior.

The decor can only be described as whimsical and fun.

Think monkeys swinging from the wooden beams in the bar, faux animal heads in the lobby and botanical-themed wall coverings everywhere.

It’s a delight. And even more so as we’re welcomed by cheery staff offering a hair-of-the-dog glass of fizz.

The hotel has 34 rooms spread across the main building as well as in the adjoining coach house, all named after folk who have a history with the place.

Like the rest of the hotel, the rooms are maximalist in design, with vibrant, colourful wallpaper and quirky, antique furniture.

Our room was a delight, dominated by a vast, comfy bed covered in a rainbow of soft throws and cushions, while a menagerie of monkeys and peacocks danced across the wallpaper.

The beautiful furnishings included huge gilt mirrors, a restored antique desk with a baby blue vintage telephone and a cosy armchair perfect for gazing out of the window.

The fancy Victorian bathroom featured a big, deep bath and was packed with lovely local Bramley toiletries and a Dyson hairdryer.

While I was there to recover from festival fever, the location in the southern Cotswolds meant there was plenty to see and do in the area.

Flying monk

The helpful team at The Old Bell can arrange a guided tour of the King’s gardens in nearby Highgrove House, a visit to Westonbirt Arboretum or paddleboarding at Cotswold Water Park.

However, it’s just as nice to potter around Malmesbury.

This year the historic market town was named as one of The Sunday Times’ Best Places To Live and I can see why.

Alongside its grand old abbey, it has the full set of cutesy tea rooms, gift shops and bougie boutiques but also a cool craft beer scene thanks to The Flying Monk Brewery and Tap Room.

And it’s not short of history either. The town is the oldest borough of England and former home of Athelstan the Glorious, who was crowned the first King of England in 924.

It’s also where the famous flying monk, Britain’s first aviator, came from.

In the 11th century, a local Benedictine monk called Eilmer claimed to have seen Halley’s comet in 989 and 1066 and decided he wanted a piece of that sky pie.

He fashioned himself a pair of wings and threw himself off a local tower, gliding for some 200 metres before crashing and breaking both legs.

You can read more about this legend in the Athelstan Museum.
Malmesbury has a clutch of proper pubs serving food, but dinner at The Old Bell is a must.

We treated ourselves to the Chef’s Menu at its Abbey Row restaurant, a five-course tasting menu with hand-picked Orkney scallops, Cornish turbot, Iberico pork and Wagyu sirloin.

After a good night’s sleep in a proper bed and a Malmesbury full English, it turns out the road to a festival recovery leads directly to Malmesbury.

GO: Malmesbury

STAYING THERE: Double rooms at The Old Bell, with breakfast, cost from £210 per night. See oldbellhotel.co.uk.

OUT & ABOUT: Visit the Athelstan Museum (athelstanmuseum.org.uk) and Westonbirt Arboretum (forestryengland.uk).

How long does the Centre Court roof at Wimbledon take to close?

THE Great British summer often does its best to ruin matches at Wimbledon.

After regular rain delays throughout the Wimbledon tournament’s history the All England Club finally decided enough was enough – and got a roof.

Wimbledon 2025 LIVE: Point-by-point action, results and news from the All England Club

Wimbledon betting special: Tips, predictions and odds

Why was the Centre Court roof at Wimbledon installed?

Unpredictable weather at the Wimbledon tournament has a long history of leaving not only fans but players, the media and officials frustrated.

With wet weather forecasted for the first week of Wimbledon 2024, players will be thankful for the Centre Court roof.

The All England Club had rejected the proposal of the roof previously, on numerous occasions.

But pressure from broadcasters as well as commercial viability meant the roof finally got the go-ahead.

The then-All England Club chairman, Tim Phillips, said: “We owe it to tennis fans to investigate all the possibilities for play to take place even if it is raining.”

He added that the “microclimate” under the roof must not affect the grass growth or player’s safety.

Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam tournament to be played on grass.

In 1996, Sir Cliff famously sang for the crowd, while the 2008 men’s final between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal went on for a massive 4 hours 48 minutes, largely due to wet weather.

When was the Centre Court roof at Wimbledon installed?

Building work began in 2006, with the initial removal of the existing roof.

The complete retractable roof structure was ready for the 2009 championships after its unveiling in April that year.

How long is the delay when the Centre Court roof at Wimbledon is closed?

The roof, designed from waterproof Tenara fabric, takes about 10 minutes to close.

According to the Wimbledon website the maximum time it takes to close and for play to start is 30 minutes.

The air conditioning needs time to acclimatise to indoor play.

The air con dries the grass to prevent slippage and injury.

The speed of the roof closing means that fans don’t need to rapidly put on wet weather gear and players don’t need to rush off court.

Can the Centre Court roof at Wimbledon be re-opened?

Once closed, tournament rules say it must remain shut until the match is completed, even if the weather improves in the meantime.

However the roof closing in the evening due to failing light does not mean the match continues until it finishes.

Wimbledon has a curfew of 11pm, meaning any match underway must finish by this time.

The match will resume the next day, and can do so without the roof.

When was the Centre Court roof at Wimbledon first used?

The roof was first tested on May 17, 2009, in an exhibition match.

On June 29, 2009, in a fourth round ladies singles match between Amelie Mauresmo and Dinara Safina, the roof was closed for the first time in a competitive match – play had already begun when the rain came.

The first time a full match was played with the roof closed was contested in the 2009 championships, when Andy Murray beat Stanislas Wawrinka in the fourth round of the men’s singles competition.

The match went on until 10.38pm, which exceeded the existing record of 9.17pm.

The first Wimbledon final to be partially played under the roof was when Federer beat Murray in four sets in July 2012.

How much does the Centre Court roof weigh and how much does it cost?

The total weight of the roof, including the non-moving parts, is 3,000 tonnes.

The cost of the roof has not been disclosed by the All England Club, but is estimated at £80-£100 million.

A roof on Court One was finished for the 2019 tournament.
