New tool for renters to complain about ‘criminal’ landlords – from mould and repairs to deposit and fees, are you owed?

A NEW tool will make it easier for renters to complain about ‘criminal’ landlords and claim compensation.

The new platform will allow tenants to report problems from mould and safety issues to unfair fees and missing deposits.

Renters will see a huge increase in their rights this year and new avenues to complain[/caption]

The “My Housing Issue” Gateway, designed by the TDS charitable foundation, will be a one-stop platform for private sector renters to raise issues.

It will signpost tenants to information about their rights and encourage the early resolution of disputes.

Where disputes are not rectified in a timely manner it will also tell renters how to escalate their complaints.

Research had found that 50 per cent of private renters did not know where to go if their landlord failed to address a problem.

Additionally 48 per cent wanted clearer information on how to make a complaint.

Dr Jennifer Harris, head of policy and research at TDS Group said: “Tenants are hungry for better, easy to access information to enforce their rights and hold criminal landlords to account. The gateway will do just that, ensuring renters know where to go for the help they need, when they need it.

“Empowering tenants like this will be vital if the government’s ambitions of a better private rented sector are to become a reality.”

The platform has been launched ahead of the passing of the Renters’ Rights Bill, which will greatly increase the rights of private-sector tenants.

When passed the bill is expected to end fixed-term tenancies, introduce a decent home standard, establish a new ombudsman and protect families in receipt of benefits from discrimination.

It will also end the practise of tenants being forced from their homes under Section 21 notices, also known as “no fault” evictions.

The bill is expected to become law in late summer or autumn and will increase the obligations on landlords to address issues in a timely manner.

Dan Wilson Craw, deputy chief executive at Generation Rent, said: “One of the biggest barriers to improving private rented homes is the sheer number of bodies that play a role in enforcing tenant protections, and the confusion this creates among renters themselves.

“As the government implements the reforms currently going through parliament it is essential that private renters can access free, clear and useful resources and information. This new gateway offers tenants an easy-to-use tool, tailored to their needs – empowering them to make their next moves informed and with confidence.”

There are already many rules landlords need to follow and if they don’t renters could be entitled to compensation.

These include obligations to ensure properties are mould-free and to complete repairs in a timely manner.

If your landlord has failed to do this you could be entitled to have a proportion of your rent refunded.

There are also strict rules on the fees landlords can charge and how they should manage your money, including your deposit.

If you think you might be owed compensation this guide can help you learn more.

How to settle a dispute with your private landlord

THE first step is to try and talk through the problem, but if this does not go to plan you can write a formal letter.

Simply explain the problem and what you want them to do to resolve it.

If unsuccessful, the next step is to complain to your local council, which can help with issues regarding:

  • repairs that cause a risk to your health and safety not being done  (e.g faulty electrical wiring not being fixed)
  • illegal eviction
  • harassment
  • dishonest or unfair trading behaviour

If your landlord still doesn’t sort out your problem or if the council can’t help, you might be able to take court action.

Just remember this can be expensive so make sure it’s the right option for you.

Civil Legal Advice (CLA) can offer some people free and confidential services as part of legal aid, if you’re in England and Wales.

A solicitor can also help you too, but they might charge a fee.

If you’re a social tenant, you should complain to the Housing Ombudsman.

New train route to launch ‘coast-to-coast’ service for the first time ever – connecting UK’s most popular beach towns

A NEW train service launching next year will connect two seaside towns in Cornwall for the first time.

Soon holidaymakers and locals in Cornwall will be able to board an hourly service from Newquay to Falmouth.

The new direct journey will call at six stations, including Newquay, Par, St Austell, Truro, Penryn and Falmouth[/caption]

The new train route will run direct trains between the coasts for the first time, according to Network Rail.

Currently, Brits who want to take a train from Newquay to Falmouth need to change services in St Austell.

This involves boarding both a bus and a train, with public transport journeys taking over two hours.

Newquay is one of Cornwall‘s most popular seaside towns and is a known surfing hotspot.

While Falmouth isn’t as well known as Newquay, the charming coastal town does have a picturesque harbour.

Construction work on the new route has already started, with 500 metres of new track and a new crossing being installed at Newquay Train Station where a second platform is being built.

The new direct journey will call at six stations, including Newquay, Par, St Austell, Truro, Penryn and Falmouth.

When the services launch in 2026, they will run every hour.

Other details, such as ticket prices and departure times, are yet to be announced.

The new train route is part of a Mid Cornwall Metro Project, which is seeking to improve rail journeys in the county.

£56.8million is being pumped into the Mid Cornwall Metro Project, most of which has come from the Government’s Levelling Up Fund.

Improvements to five Cornish train stations will also take place under the plans, including Newquay, Roche, Bugle, Par and Penryn.

The new direct train route and improvement work to the stations will see an additional 700,000 seats per year added

Bogdan Lupu, the project director from Network Rail, told the BBC: “It’s a single track line, so we can’t run a lot of trains.

“The loop is going to enable us to pass more trains so we’ll be able to run a train every hour.

“In the summer, you’re going to be able to run both local trains and London-Paddington trains to Newquay, which is going to be great for the local community and for visitors. It will change the face of Newquay.”

Elsewhere in the UK, Portishead Railway Station could reopen within the next two years, more than seven decades after its previous railway hub was demolished.

And a new £96million train station is set to open in trendy UK neighbourhood compared to New York.

Liverpool Baltic Station will be located in the city’s Baltic Triangle, which has previously been likened to New York City’s meatpacking district.

Sun Travel's favourite train journeys in the world

Sun Travel's journalists have taken their fare share of train journeys on their travels and here they share their most memorable rail experiences.

Davos to Geneva, Switzerland

“After a ski holiday in Davos, I took the scenic train back to Geneva Airport. The snow-covered mountains and tiny alpine villages that we passed were so beautiful that it felt like a moving picture was playing beyond the glass.” – Caroline McGuire

Tokyo to Kyoto by Shinkansen

“Nothing quite beats the Shinkansen bullet train, one of the fastest in the world. It hardly feels like you’re whizzing along at speed until you look outside and see the trees a green blur. Make sure to book seat D or E too – as you’ll have the best view of Mount Fuji along the way.” Kara Godfrey

London to Paris by Eurostar

“Those who have never travelled on the Eurostar may wonder what’s so special about a seemingly ordinary train that takes you across the channel. You won’t have to waste a moment and can tick off all the top attractions from the Louvre to the Champs-Élysées which are both less than five kilometres from the Gare du Nord.” – Sophie Swietochowski

Glasgow to Fort William by Scotrail

“From mountain landscapes and serene lochs to the wistful moors, I spent my three-hour journey from Glasgow to Fort William gazing out the window. Sit on the left-hand side of the train for the best views overlooking Loch Lomond.” – Hope Brotherton

Beijing to Ulaanbatar

“The Trans-Mongolian Express is truly a train journey like no other. It starts amid the chaos of central Beijing before the city’s high-rises give way to crumbling ancient villages and eventually the vast vacant plains of Mongolia, via the Gobi desert. The deep orange sunset seen in the middle of the desert is among the best I’ve witnessed anywhere.” – Ryan Gray

And the new £460million Curzon Street Station will open in Birmingham – the first of its kind in the UK in 130 years.

Why were Polly, Luke and Ross not at the 2025 MAFS UK reunion?

FANS of Married At First Sight are keen to know which couples from the drama-filled series are still together.

Selective couples from the popular dating show will return for a MAF Reunion on Monday February 24, 2025.

The MAF reunion promises tear-jerking scenes[/caption]

Who is in the second MAFS UK reunion episode?

The brides and grooms will come together for the first time since leaving the experiment.

Together, they will share their thoughts on what went down during their time on the show.

The honesty box will also be making a return to the dinner table, so there’s bound to be some more tear-jerking moments in store.

While some MAFS UK couples have reportedly turned down the opportunity to make a comeback, others have claimed they weren’t invited back to the reunion.

To spice things up, producers have invited couples from fan favourites from previous seasons of Married At First Sight.

Who’s missing from the MAF reunion?

Polly

Channel 4
Polly was a fan favourite but won’t be beside Adam for the reunion[/caption]

Although Polly was matched with Adam by the MAF experts, they were far from a match made in heaven.

Viewers will remember that the tears on their wedding day after Adam failed to compliment his new bride at the altar were a telling sign that this couple wouldn’t last.

The career advisor turned reality TV sensation parted ways with Adam after an unforgettable blazing row at the final MAFS dinner party.

Sadly Polly won’t be present for the MAF reunion, but Adam is set to appear without her.

Since leaving the show she has relocated to Australia and has a whole new look after dropping a dress size or two.

Although her on-screen marriage didn’t work out, Polly has reportedly been enjoying “lots of lovely dates” with a “new man” in Australia.

A source told The Sun: “Polly and her new man met when she landed in Sydney, and they’ve been on lots of lovely dates planned by him.

“They’ve been to a wildlife centre, cinema, and are planning on some weekends away with friends, as well as long beach days booked in too.”

Ross

Ross hit it off with his wife Sacha from the very start.

But despite being one of the strongest couples in the competition, the couple split just two weeks after moving in together.

Mancunian Ross has not commented on their split confirmed he had moved on but posting photos with his new girlfriend in Instagram, leaving Sacha and fans of the couple devastated.

It has been rumoured that Ross has been dodging phone calls from the producers of the show and therefore won’t appear in the much anticipated MAF reunion.

Luke

Luke has since collaborated with Domino’s[/caption]

Despite many viewers dubbing Luke and Amy the ‘Barbie and Ken‘ of MAFS, their relationship rapidly fell apart during the experiment resulting in one of the most dramatic final vow ceremony’s ever viewed.

In this final episode Amy savagely dumped Luke before the end of the show and so it’s no surprise to find that the pair no longer follow each other on Instagram.

Luke revealed that he was not asked back to take part in the MAF reunion.

He told Yahoo UK: “I don’t know why, some of us were not required.”

Since Amy’s stint on the show she has been linked to fellow participant Adam Nightingale.

The two have been spotted together on multiple occasions, sparking speculation about a potential romance.

However, both have insisted they are just friends.

Emma

Emma may not be returning to MAF but she’s featured in Channel 5 documentary We Love Bridget Jones: All The Laughter And More about the fourth movie in cinemas now[/caption]

Emma and Caspar never made it to the final and left the show in week seven after struggling to form a connection.

In January 2025, Emma shared a selfie with a fellow traveler during a skiing holiday in France which sparked rumours of a new love match but Emma quickly shut down any speculation.

She wrote on Instagram: “For the many people asking… @george_bradbury is not my boyfriend – I am of course third wheeling again.”

Gardener Caspar did go on to find love since leaving the show.

On social media he wrote: “Who knew that 2024 would find me the love of my life?

“So happy to have you in my life and moving in to live with me next month. Happy New Year, 2025 is looking amazing.”

Neither Emma nor Caspar will appear in the special catch up episode.

Emma told Yahoo: “They didn’t need me anymore. I still don’t know why I was cut. There were some storylines that they wanted to follow, the producers, and yeah, someone must have taken my seat, right, so someone got called up to get back on there. But yeah, not me!”

She added: “There was certainly an uproar from a lot of my friends that I wasn’t gonna be there — I don’t know whether that’s just my friends though!

“I know I’m a big personality and I definitely could have brought some laughs to the table… It’s a shame.”

Richelle

Channel 4
Richelle accused Orson of being an actor before opting to leave the experiment[/caption]

Richelle and Orson left the show Married at First Sight UK in week six after Richelle questioned her husbands authenticity.

The couple both wrote leave after Orson became involved in a cheating scandal with Stephen’s bride Hannah, leading to the end of his relationship with Richelle.

Since leaving the show Richelle decided to quit her job as a property investor.

The former MAF bride wrote on Instagram: “To eliminate one of a few stressors, I’ve left my job.

“Post MAFS stress, life and low tolerance for bs took over.”

Who will appear on the MAF reunion?

Lacey and Nathan from Married at First Sight UK on a couch.
Despite fans rooting for Lacey and Nathan, the couple didn’t last
Eroteme

Fans will be delighted to hear cast members Lacey and Nathan are on the guest list for the MAF reunion.

Despite declaring that they loved each other ‘to the stars and back’ in the final weeks of the show, the couple sadly didn’t last and the pair no longer follow each other on Instagram.

In a post shared on Lacey’s Instagram story ahead of the reunion she said: “I would like to add that me and Nathan did break up a long time ago…

“I want to clarify we split up for many reasons.

“One to do with a charity run for Cancer, my nan and two uncles passed away. It’s a big day for me, sorry that I wanted my partner to support me and wish me luck.

“There was many other factors but this one hurt me the most.”

Fans for the couples to spill the tea and hear both sides of the story as the honesty box is passed around the reunion dinner.

Here is the full line up of who will be attending MAF 2025 Reunion:
