THE HISTORY OF DUNNES STORES

DUNNES Stores opened its first store on Patrick Street in Cork in 1944 - and it was an instant hit.

Shoppers from all over the city rushed to the store to snap up quality clothing at pre-war prices in Ireland’s first ‘shopping frenzy’.

During the excitement, a window was forced in and the police had to be called to help control the crowds hoping to bag founder Ben Dunne’s ‘Better Value’ bargains.

Dunnes later opened more stores in the 1950s and began to sell groceries in 1960 – starting with apples and oranges.

The retailer said: “Fruit was expensive at the time and Ben Dunne yet again offered Better Value than anyone else in town.

“Over time, our food selection has grown and that spirit of good value has remained strong.

“Now we offer a wide range of carefully-sourced foods from both local Irish suppliers and overseas.”

The retailer’s first Dublin store opened its doors in 1957 on Henry Street and a super store on South Great Georges Street was unveiled in 1960.

They added: “In 1971, our first Northern Irish store opened, and many others soon followed.

“Expansion continued in the 1980s in Spain, and later into Scotland and England.”

Dunnes now has 142 stores and employs 15,000 people.

UK weather: Brits brace for ‘intense’ downpours, thunderstorms & 45mph winds as Met Office issues 12-hour yellow warning

BRITS are bracing for “intense” downpours, thunderstorms and strong winds after the Met Office issued a 12-hour yellow warning.

The weather warning will be in effect for 12 hours between 7am and 7pm today.

Thunderstorms like those in Blackpool last month (pictured) could also be on the cards for Brits[/caption]

Earlier, the forecaster had only issued the warning for the East of England, East Midlands, and Yorkshire & Humber.

But an updated map from the Met Office reveals London and the South-East must also brace for the extreme weather.

The affected regions should expect a downpour of 15-25 millimetres of rain.

Brits have also been warned to expect some hail and lightning as thunderstorms roll in, said the Met Office.

Where repeated thunderstorms happen, up to 40-60 mm of rain is possible, the forecaster added.

Met Office meteorologist Jonathan Vautrey said that gusts of “40 to 45mph” winds could be on the cards on Sunday evening.

He added that there could be “particularly intense regions” of rain today particularly around the Humber and Wash regions.

The Met Office has said that disruption to travel and outdoor activities is possible.

It comes after the UK has experienced bouts of hot, sunny weather in recent weeks.

Weather warnings are issued on the Met Office website and social medias.

The Met Office said on social media: “Yellow weather warning issued.

“Thunderstorms across parts of eastern England Sunday 0700 – 1900.

“Stay weather aware.”

The rest of the country is also forecast to experience cooler air, cloud and showery spells for the rest of the weekend and early next week, before temperatures begin to rise again.

Marco Petagna, senior meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “The headline is a changeable theme to the next couple of days and then the weather will become more settled as we go into next week.

“In the short term, it’s quite a mixed picture. There’s a lot of cloud around, and bits and pieces of showery rain around.

“Across the East of England, the weather could turn heavy and thundery and there’s a warning out for thunderstorms between 7am to 7pm, because of the unsettled atmosphere.

“We could see an inch or two of rain and several thunderstorms there on Sunday, and that showery scene continues into Monday as well, especially in the north and east of the UK.”

The Met Office said the cooler conditions are set to subside, with much of the country seeing more settled weather moving further into next week.

Terrifying moment boy, 4, was taken from his bed by stranger as he slept beside his twin – and was never seen again

THIS is the harrowing moment a four-year-old boy is kidnapped from his bed next to his twin brother.

Footage shows the man suspecting of abducting and killing Cash, believed to be 22-year-old Darriynn Brown, hovering over the crib in a hoodie and sweatpants with a backpack on in Dallas, Texas.

Darriynn Brown has been deemed competent to stand trial, a judge declared

His twin brother, Carter, was laying sound asleep next to him.

The man – who is believed to be Brown – continues to hover and appears to hesitate for a couple of seconds before reaching down to grab little Cash.

He then picks him up by under his underarms and carries him out of the bedroom.

The harrowing case is now finally set to come to trial this year.

And one lawyer told The Sun it is going strain the American legal system, with swirling questions around mental health and competency.

Brown allegedly broke into the house just before 5am on May 15, 2021, and snatched the tot.

The same day, Cash was tragically found dead around eight blocks away from the house by a jogger.

Cash passed away from multiple stab wounds, with cops previously saying his wounds appeared to have been inflicted by an “edged weapon”.

Brown was identified following the release of the CCTV footage of a man snatching the four-year-old in the middle of the night.

He is charged with capital murder in the heinous killing and has finally been deemed competent to stand trial, a judge declared four years after the incident.

Cash’s blood was found on Brown’s clothes, according to the murder affidavit.

Surveillance installed in the six-bedroom Florida Parkway home also shows that, after Cash was snatched from his bed, the culprit returned for his twin brother, Carter.

The second clip appears to show Brown in the bedroom at around 7am, when it’s light outside.

He is captured on camera, like a couple of hours earlier, hovering over the boy who is asleep, but leaves him be after he appears to be scared off by something.

The motive for the alleged abduction of Cash by Brown is unclear.

Now Brown has undergone treatment through an “outpatient competency restoration program” and is now deemed capable of understanding the charges against him, as well as able to participate in his own defence.

Brown was evaluated by two doctors in 2022 and found unable to understand court proceedings and help with his own defence, according to court records.

But in January a doctor said in a report that Brown is competent, with a judge ordering that criminal proceedings against him can continue.

The 22-year-old’s lawyer Heath Harris has previously said he has mental illnesses, including schizophrenia, and was hearing voices in the moment he is accused of taking Cash from his bed.

Former prosecutor and defence attorney Dr. Robert Sanders told The Sun how the case could lead to a potential defence of insanity.

He said: “He might be clearly incompetent to understand the wrongfulness of the action he did at that time, and that could lead to a not guilty by reasonable insanity or guilty by insanity and a lockup at a certain point in time.

“The way they usually do this is they treat you and determine when you are reasonably competent to stand trial.

The suspect was reportedly seen outside the home the boy was taken from weeks before his death

“They’ve done all of that, and now he’s been determined to be reasonably competent to stand trial, but the defence is still allowed to show that at the time of the offence, he could not understand the wrongfulness of his actions.

“That doesn’t mean he is not competent now – but at the time he did it, he may not have understood the wrong of his based on some mental disease or defect.”

Dr Sanders also explained how the tragic case could even test the limits of the legal system’s ability to balance justice as well as mental health.

He added: “ The issues in society are how do we view mental health? And is mental health a mitigation and extenuation?

“ So mitigation lessens the impact not of the depth, but of the results of the individual’s actions.

“And the extenuation is, ‘what is the rationale for the irrational action of murdering a child?’

“So the jury, the judge, whoever is the trier of the fact, will get to balance those things if in fact they get to a point where they find he’s guilty of the crime or not guilty by insanity based on the defence’s application at the time that the insanity is an affirmative defence, which means you have to tell the court front that’s what you’re going to do.

“And once his defence counsel has an opportunity to look at all the evidence, which he hadn’t seen, at some point in time he’ll be able to say, ‘I’m going to assert the affirmative defence of not guilty by insanity’ because he wasn’t able to contemplate the wrongness of his actions when he took them or not.

“The likelihood is that since he was confined and not able to be tried immediately after this, it seems very likely that that defence is going to come up.”

Brown also faces charges of burglary and kidnapping in connection with the four-year-old’s heinous abduction, alongside additional burglary and injury to an elderly person charges from another incident, according to court and jail records.

Brown was also reportedly seen in footage lurking outside the home about 10 weeks before Cash was abducted.

The male who is believed to be Brown is seen next to the neighbor’s shared fence before he peers into Sherrod’s backyard, in the clip published by the Daily Beast.

The suspect, wearing black jeans and a grey tank top, even quickly opens the back gate before promptly leaving the premises.

He is also accused of walking into a home in Dallas in February 2021 – three months before the murder of Cash – and grabbing a young child.

Cops said he broke in and searched the house before punching the homeowner after a confrontation, according to an affidavit.

The homeowner didn’t want to press charges at the time and told cops that Brown had apologised.

What really killed Lolita? World’s loneliest whale died weeks after millionaire’s pledge to help free orca after 50years

BELOVED orca Lolita, who was known for her mind-blowing tricks and decades spent in captivity, died just weeks after she was due to be freed.

Millionaire football club owner Jim Irsay worked with campaigners to release the depressed whale and return her to the Pacific ocean and her ageing mother – after 50 years at the Miami Seaquarium.

Campaigners spent years trying to secure Lolita’s release from the park[/caption]

The killer whale, also called Tokitae by activists advocating for her release, was a superstar Florida attraction that tourists travelled across the country to see.

She was taken from her mother aged four and used as the aquarium’s star attraction for decades before falling ill.

Activists long campaigned for her release from Seaquarium – who always strong denied any mistreatment of the whale and said said she was well cared for.

In 2023, the park and campaigners formed an unlikely alliance to reunite the lonely orca with the waters of the Pacific Northwest, where her mother was believed to still roam.

All this with the financial backing of football club, Indianapolis Colts, owner Jim Irsay.

Just weeks before she was due to be released, Lolita died of kidney disease at 57-years-old.

Her death sparked widespread outrage, with CEO at Humane World for Animals calling Tokitae the “embodiment of the wrongs done to her species”.

She said: “Through the years Tokitae became the very embodiment of the wrongs done to her species and other sentient wild animals used in aquariums, circuses and other performing acts.

“In that sense, her life has had greater meaning. She helped shift the public’s moral perspective, bringing into fruition a new ideal in which wild animals are left undisturbed and protected in their natural habitats.

“But to say that it’s a shame that her life had to be sacrificed for us to learn such a lesson would be a gross understatement.”

Park officials began to train Tokitae for release after a plan was made to take her back home to Washington state, but the orca began showing extreme signs of discomfort.

Medical teams aggressively treated her ailments, which appeared to be pneumonia, until she finally succumbed to a renal condition.

It followed a damning federal report in 2021 that accused the park of serious marine mammal violations and resulted into new ownership.

What really killed Lolita?

Campaigners had for decades claimed that she was far too big for the miniature tank that she lived in – which was only 20ft deep and just 35ft wide.

Animal rights group PETA has said that Lolita’s life there had been “a living nightmare” and begged for her not to suffer the fate of her partner, Hugo, who died from hitting his head repeatedly against the tank walls.

Toki was one of six calves that were rounded up and sold by fishermen to marine parks in 1970.

Most of the calves died within the first year of being in captivity, but Toki defied expectations and lived on while working a busy daily schedule.

She performed tricks three times a day for audiences and lived in an 80-foot long and 35-foot wide tank, which was the smallest of its kind in the US.

Just 10 years after Toki arrived at the aquarium, her companion Hugo died of an aneurysm that was caused by repeated head trauma, earning her the title of the world’s loneliest whale.

Million dollar backing

While animal rights activists rallied support for her release, other environmental experts felt doubtful that she could live successfully in the wild after her life at the aquarium.

A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration spokesman said after the move was announced that she could have posed a risk to existing populations in Washington waters.

“If she is healthy enough to be transported, the issue is her skill set,” said Miami-Dade Commissioner Raquel Regalado, who advocated for improvements at Miami Seaquarium.

“She doesn’t know how to catch or hunt. We’re not really sure if she can communicate with other whales because she’s been alone.”

Her move was estimated to have cost $20million, and was going to be funded by Irsay.

“I know Lolita wants to get to free waters. I don’t care what anyone says,” Irsay said before her death.

“She’s lived this long to have this opportunity. And my only mission is to help this whale get free.”

Heartbreaking story of killer whale Kiska who lived ‘tortured existence’ in captivity & lost 5 babies before dying alone

KILLER whale Kiska – dubbed the world’s loneliest whale – died age 47 after living a “tortured existence” in captivity for decades.

Tragic Kiska was captured in the North Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Iceland in 1979 when she was just two-years-old.

She died at MarineLand in Canada in March this year after outliving her five babies.

Kiska was first taken to an aquarium in Iceland where she lived with four other young orcas, including Keiko – who starred in Free Willy.

Shortly afterwards, Kiska was sold, along with Keiko, to MarineLand.

She spent the last 12 years of her life completely alone in a tiny tank, and heartbreaking footage showed her shaking and smashing her head against the wall.

Animal rights group PETA described Kiska as the “world’s loneliest orca” whose life was marked by “tragedy after tragedy” after all five of her calves died before they were seven years old.

Kiska became MarineLand’s last orca in 2011.

Animal activist and whistleblower Phil Demers said Kiska’s life is “best described as a living nightmare”.

Phil became a whistleblower and went to the media to expose what he claimed was wrongdoing by MarineLand a decade ago.

“I know she wants to go home and I know she has the fire within her and the determination… this is an incredible story,” he said.

Irsay made the announcement on his twitter stating: “Dinner before today’s Lolita press conference in Miami Beach! Key players in the massive plan to finally FREE this 8000 lb killer whale, Lolita!!…Stay tuned as this dream unfolds in real time.”

The complex operation was going to involve flying the 2268kg whale 3000 miles to Washington state, where she would be taught how to live in the wild again in an ocean sanctuary.

This would have entailed teaching her to catch fish and build up her muscles for swimming before being released in Puget Sound, an estuary off the coast of Washington, where she was captured back in 1970.

However, some campaigners feared that after so long spent in captivity she may no longer be equipped to survive in the wild.

“She’s persevered the difficulties that we humans forced on her. She lived through her capture and the death of family members and living in this small tank for so many years,” Pritam Singh, the founder of the advocacy group Friends of Lolita, told The Times.

Miami Seaquarium confirmed in a statement after Lolita’s death she died of a “multiple chronic conditions including renal disease and pneumonia” after an autopsy.

‘Please, no… no way’ – Alphonso Davies watches in horror as Bayern team-mate Jamal Musiala suffers sickening injury

JAMAL MUSIALA’S Bayern Munich teammate Alphonso Davies was left with his head in his hands begging “please, no” as he watched the midfielder suffer his sickening injury from afar.

Musiala, 22, was stretchered off with a suspected fractured fibula following a collision with Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma during the Club World Cup last night.

Musiala got his leg caught underneath Donnarumma at the end of the first half, seeing his ankle bent out of shape when coming out of the other side of the tackle.

The German international was screaming and writhing in pain as he came out of the other side of the entanglement.

Players on the pitch were visibly upset by the horrendous injury, while Donnarumma burst into tears as he watched Musiala get carried off the pitch in Atlanta.

Meanwhile Davies, who was watching from home as he recovers from his own cruciate ligament injury, was in shock at the injury to his teammate and best friend.

The Canadian full-back, who often live streams himself watching the games for fans, was clearly distraught at the injury.

Reacting to the injury on stream he screamed “no” multiple times before pleading that the injury wasn’t as bad as it looked, saying: “please, no… no way”.

Sky Germany have reported that Musiala is suspected to have fractured his fibula and damaged multiple ligaments in his leg.

Since the injury multiple Bayern Munich players have posted messages of support for Musiala on social media.

Manuel Neuer wrote: “We gave it our all. You could see how badly we wanted that win. But right now, all that matters is Jamal.

“Wishing you a speedy recovery, brother – we’re all with you.”

Speaking in a post-match interview, Thomas Muller recalled: “You could tell immediately that something very bad had happened.

“It didn’t look good. You could see during the first half his intensity, how much he loves playing football.

“In a situation like this, thoughts should centre around Jamal. And let’s be careful that we don’t have tasteless conversations after someone has been injured like that.”

While PSG’s Donnarumma sent his well-wishes to the star after being involved in his injury.

He wrote: “All my prayers and well wishes are with you @jamalmusiala10”

The match ended in a 2-0 victory for PSG, meaning the European champions have now booked their spot in the Club World Cup semi-finals.

The Parisiens fielded the same starting 11 that had won the Champions League seven weeks earlier in Bayern’s stadium, with the exception of Bradley Barcola replacing Dembele in the front three.

In the final 12 minutes of normal time and 11 minutes added on, PSG scored twice, had two men sent off and then saw a penalty awarded against them at the death overturned on review by English referee Anthony Taylor.

Willian Pacho was sent off for a lunge of Leon Goretzka, and PSG substitute Lucas Hernandez soon followed him for a mindless elbow on Raphael Guerrero.

But PSG held on, and Ousmane Dembele sealed victory deep into stoppage time to put them a step closer to being crowned kings of the world as well.

They will now face Real Madrid in the Club World Cup semi-finals on Wednesday.

For Bayern, their journey in the US is over, and the conclusion of their season also means the conclusion of club legend Thomas Muller‘s time with the Bavarian club – bringing an end to his 17-season spell in Munich.

‘My conscience is clean’ – Keith Andrews speaks out on Martin O’Neill branding him ‘vitriolic critic’ of ex-Ireland boss

KEITH ANDREWS responded to Martin O’Neill branding him a “vitrolic critic” of him during his spell as Ireland manager.

O’Neill levied the accusation in response to the ex-Ireland midfielder being linked with succeeding Thomas Frank as Brentford head coach.

Stephen McCarthy/Sportsfile

Speaking on TalkSport prior to Andrews’ appointment, O’Neill said: “The irony is when I was manager of the Republic of Ireland he was a particularly vitriolic critic of mine at the time.

“He was really dead against me trying to use set-pieces to try to win games.

“The irony is he becomes the set-piece coach. Really I say good luck to him. Brentford have decided, if it is the case, that he should get it.

“I hope he does get it because then he will realise what management is all about.”

While Andrews was a Sky Sports pundit, he was particularly critical of O’Neill’s tactics and put the entirety of the blame on him for Ireland‘s poor form following Euro 2016.

And reflecting on that criticism, the 44-year-old insisted his conscience was clear.

He said: “My conscience would be very clean in terms of where that came from.

“Ireland was the only thing I supported as a kid growing up. I’ve already touched on it.

“Very patriotic, very passionate, very proud to be sat here as an Irish Premier League manager.

“So it came from, again, going back to the way I work, I studied the team, gave my opinion, and invariably you can’t please people all of the time.

“And occasionally you do upset people, yeah, for sure.”

Andrews makes the step up to the top job at Brentford having previously served as the team’s set piece coach.

His work yielded 13 goals from set plays last season.

Since their promotion to the Premier League in 2021, the London side has finished 13th, 9th, 16th, and 10th.

However, they are in the midst of a rebuild, with Thomas Frank having gone to Tottenham Hotspur.

The German has brought assistant first-team coach Justin Cochrane, head of athletic performance Chris Haslam and first-team analyst Joe Newton with him.

Meanwhile, Bryan Mbeumo continues to be linked with a move to Manchester United, while Christian Norgaard is closing in on signing for Arsenal.

The Bees have been able to make some significant signings, however, notably Ireland goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher who joined from Liverpool.

One happy customer wrote: “Worked a treat, simple to use, van now has AC again.”

“A cost effective way to recharge and you can obviously use the regulator again and will only have to buy the can next time, which saves more money.”

Topping up air con refrigerant

Enthusiastic motorist, Scott Kilmar said: “This car hack will save you thousands in AC repairs.”

In his step by step guide on how to use the product, he explained that “it is not that hard to do.”

Halfords has also shared a guide on how to top up air con refrigerant just in time for the hotter months.

Halfords explained: “A blast of cool, refreshing air will certainly keep everyone happy when the sun is shining.

“But, as with many car components and consumables, the gas used to cool the air before it enters the cabin will eventually deplete.

“That’s when your air conditioning needs topping up.”

Its guide is broken down into three simple steps which involve turning on your car’s engine, performing a diagnostic check, and topping up the refrigerant if the gauge says “pressure is low.”

Halfords also advise you wear safety gloves and protective glasses when topping up your car.

Stay cool this summer

With the sun finally out, a home expert shared his top tips for staying cool this summer.

James Longley, managing director at Utility Builder, told The Sun his pro tips for staying comfortable in the heat.

Contrary to popular opinion, he recommends keeping all windows and blinds closed to stop hot air from circulating around your home.

Other advice includes staying hydrated, filling a hot water bottle up with cold water, and using wet towels.

How to stay safe in hot weather

The UK Health Security Agency advised you follow these tips to reduce your risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke:

  • Keep out of the sun at the hottest time of the day, between 11am and 3pm
  • If you are going to do a physical activity like exercising or walking the dog, plan to do these during times of the day when it is cooler such as the morning or evening
  • Keep your home cool by closing windows and curtains in rooms that face the sun
  • If you go outside, cover up with light clothing, a hat and sunglasses and slather on sun cream
  • Drink plenty of fluids but limit booze
  • Know the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heatstroke and what to do if you or someone else has them
  • Check on family, friends and neighbours who may be at higher risk of becoming unwell, and if you are at higher risk, ask them to do the same for you

Kim’s friend Lindsay May died in February, following a battle with cancer.

Posting a carousel of images of them together, as well as with other pals from their ‘Lifers’ friendship group, Kim penned: “It was just your birthday and I know you never liked to make a big deal of it, but Happy Heavenly Birthday, Lindz.

“I waited months to post this, mostly because I couldn’t find the right words. Nothing really captures how quiet and empty our lifers chat feels without you in it.

“I know you’d probably roll your eyes at me posting anything — especially since you didn’t really even have social media — but I couldn’t go through this lake trip without feeling you everywhere, and I needed to share it.”

Kim posted photos of them celebrating Lindsay’s past birthdays, as well as images of them altogether with their kids.

She went on: “The lake was your happy place. It made you feel lighter, healthier… you were you. It’ll always be our favorite lifers tradition because it’s where we spend time with all of our kids being together and get real time with each other without any outside noise.

“We felt your absence this year in every sunset, every laugh, every quiet moment.

“Looking back at these pictures from a year ago, I feel so grateful for all the memories we made. We miss you so f****** much, Lindz. Our world is not the same without you. I guess that’s why I hold onto this lake tradition so tightly. We’ll always have the lake — and in that, we’ll always have a piece of you.”

Kim was flooded with messages of support from her fans, with one person writing: “Beautifully said,” and another wrote: “love this Kim 💜.”

A third person said: “grief is such a long road.. thank you for sharing her with us,” and a fourth commented: “I love how you cherish your friends from before fame.. ❤ so sorry for your loss.”

Kim’s friend Lindz was the founder of Mayflower Entertainment, which connected brands with partners in the entertainment industry.

She’d worked with the likes of Gucci in the past, and other high-end brands.

Two brothers in miracle escape from Texas floods after they swam for their lives as water reached top bunk in camp cabin

TWO brave young brothers have told of their gutsy escape from the Texas floods – which have killed at least 50 and left dozens missing.

Piers and Ruffin Boyett were asleep in the cabin at Camp La Junta on the bank of the Guadeloupe River when it was hit by a wall of water at 4am.

Further down the river, Camp Mystic – a Christian camp hosting around 750 girls – was also swamped, and over 20 girls are still missing.

They awoke to find water rising rapidly around them – and were forced to make a split-second decision.

The plucky pair knew immediately that they had to swim.

Younger brother Piers told KSAT: “The flood started getting bigger.

“We had bunk beds in our cabins and [the water] was going up to the top bunk and we had one choice — and we had to swim out of our cabin.”

Ruffin, the elder one, said: “I had a first-hand view of the flood.

The cabins were flooding and the walls, they broke down.

“All of the campers in those cabins had to go up on the rafters and wait there until they could swim out.”

The brothers fought through the water to reach another cabin on higher ground.

They waited there until a rescue bus arrived to take them away from the Guadeloupe River and back to safety.

Whilst the Boyetts made it out of the water, not everyone has been so lucky.

A Texas dad-of-two died while valiantly trying to save his family from the floods – after having is arm almost cut “clean off”.

Julian Ryan, 27, was with his family in their trailer home when the surging waters hit.

His mother, fiance Christinia, six-year-old and 13-month-old were all huddled in the bedroom after being shaken awake at 4am on Friday.

Christinia told KHOU: “It just started pouring in, and we had to fight the door to get it closed to make sure not too much got in.”

The two kids were sitting on a floating mattress when the door of the bedroom burst open and water cascaded in.

It was then Ryan took a bold decision to save his family.

The dad punched a hole in one of the bedroom windows – but the shattered glass severed an artery and almost cut the limb “clean off”.

With blood spurting from the wound and emergency crews unable to reach the house, Julian told his family: “I’m sorry, I’m not going to make it. I love y’all.”

The waters continued to rise and the trailer was eventually broken in half – allowing the rest of the family to escape.

Christinia said: “He was the best father, and was always such a happy person who was never above helping people, no matter what it cost.

A GoFundMe has been set up to support the family after they lost Julian, and it has so far raised almost $30,000.

It reads: “Julian gave his life for his family, passing as a true hero. While his family is eternally grateful for his sacrifice, they are shattered by their loss.”

Rescuers are still scouring the devastated landscape in central Texas, but hopes of finding survivors are fast dwindling.

Larry Leitha, Kerr County sheriff, said on Saturday: “We have recovered 43 deceased individuals in Kerr County.

“Among these who are deceased we have 28 adults and 15 children.”

Multiple people lost their lives in other counties, bringing the current confirmed death toll to 50 – though this is sadly expected to rise.

The most desperate search is for a group of school-age girls who went missing from Camp Mystic – a Christian summer camp near the river.

Heartbreaking photos from the wrecked site show sodden mattresses and teddies strewn across dormitories.

On Saturday, Sheriff Leitha said 27 of the children were still missing.

'Miracle' survival: Rescued 20 miles downstream

By Patrick Harrington, foreign news reporter

A YOUNG woman was miraculously rescued after being swept 20 miles downriver in the Texas floods.

The 22-year-old was scooped up by fast-moving water from her campsite in Kerr County, Texas by deadly flash floods at 4am, and found clinging to a tree four hours later.

A third of a year’s worth of rain fell in a few hours in the area, creating an “extraordinary disaster”, with an enormous search-and-rescue mission still underway.

A Center Point resident, Carl, heard screaming when he stepped into his yard at around 8am on Friday morning.

He spotted the woman clinging to a huge Cyprus tree near Lion’s Park Dam as the river thundered beneath her.

She had for been holding on for several hours after a terrifying 20-mile journey down dams and dodging debris.

Emergency calls weren’t connecting, so the local resident desperately flagged down a police car for help.

Two rescue boats were scrambled and battled perilous currents to rescue the stranded camper.

By this time, the water level had receded considerably, so the woman was stranded 12ft above the water’s surface.

She was forced to drop into the rescue boat, and was finally brought to safety.
