Half of British teens prefer happiness over pay in jobs, new study shows

Half of teenagers would prefer to be happy in their future job than be paid a lot, according to research.

A poll of 500 13 to 18 year olds found 46 per cent already know they want their career to align with their values.

Young British workers care more about happiness than pay[/caption]

While nearly eight in 10 (77 per cent) are already considering how important mental health support is in the workplace, as 74 per cent believe it will make employees happier and want to stay at their jobs, and 36 per cent say no colleagues will ever feel ‘left out’.

On the other hand, only eight per cent are bothered about company-wide events.

And they would be more likely to take a job with free private healthcare (17 per cent) than a company car scheme (seven per cent).

Dr. Amy Pressland, a spokesperson from Benenden Health, which commissioned the research as part of its ‘Future of Work’ report, said: “This research demonstrates a distinct step-change for the next generation of workers and what’s important to them.

“Employers need to urgently consider what this means for how they design workplaces, roles and employee benefits.

“The company car and the Christmas party may become de-prioritised as Generation Alpha (born between 2010 and 2024) join the workforce.

“Front and centre for Gen Alpha is health – they are the generation most concerned with mental health, supporting neurodiversity, and will prioritise employers who align with their concerns and values.”

The study went on to poll the teen’s parents which found 54 per cent are worried about their children entering the workplace.

Their key reasons being the skills taught at school being different to what’s needed in a professional environment (41 per cent), and fears that the workplace could be toxic (39 per cent).

While 27 per cent are afraid their young adults won’t like the culture.

However, 85 per cent believe the attitudes to working have changed since they started their first job.

With 39 per cent recognising the uptick in mental health support and 53 per cent noticing more flexible working patterns.

And 35 per cent, encouragingly, think it has become more supportive in recent years.

In a separate poll of 500 HR professionals, also conducted by OnePoll for the healthcare provider, it was revealed 59 per cent have seen younger generations wanting different benefits to their predecessors.

These perks include more flexible hours, remote working and increased mental health support.

As well as gym memberships, private healthcare and pet-friendly offices.

Dr. Amy Pressland from Benenden Health added: “With Generation Alpha mere years away from entering the workforce en masse, now is the time for employers, CEOs, IT and HR directors to consider how they must adapt their workplaces to attract the most diverse and digitally-savvy generation to date.”

Mushroom murderer Erin Patterson ‘tampered with food in PRISON making inmate sick’ after being given job in jail kitchen

MUSHROOM murderer Erin Patterson has been accused of tampering with prison food while working in the jail kitchen – allegedly making a fellow inmate sick.

The shocking new claim was made by a prisoner housed in the same unit at Melbourne’s Dame Phyllis Frost Centre.

It comes after Patterson was found guilty of three counts of murder and one of attempted murder over a deadly beef wellington lunch laced with toxic mushrooms.

According to Herald Sun reports, the inmate fell ill following a dispute with Patterson and allegedly blamed the notorious poisoner for the sickness.

A Corrections Victoria source confirmed to Daily Mail Australia that Patterson had been given a job in the jail kitchen, despite the nature of the accusations that landed her there in the first place.

The mum-of-two’s supporters have hit back, insisting the prison poisoning claim is baseless.

Patterson has now been convicted of the murders of her former in-laws Don and Gail Patterson, both 70, and Gail’s sister Heather Wilkinson, 66.

She was also found guilty of the attempted murder of Heather’s husband, pastor Ian Wilkinson, who only survived the deadly July 2023 lunch after undergoing a liver transplant.

The verdicts were delivered in a packed Victorian Supreme Court on Monday, following seven days of jury deliberation and 35 days of evidence and cross-examination.

Patterson, described as “emotionless” as the guilty verdicts were read out, reportedly told her best friend Alison Rose Prior “see you soon” as she was led away from the dock.

A sentencing date is yet to be scheduled, and Patterson now faces the prospects of life behind bars.

Poisoned lunch turned fatal

Patterson pleaded not guilty to all charges, claiming the deaths were a tragic accident.

She insisted she had unknowingly used foraged death cap mushrooms when she prepared the beef wellington for her lunch guests at her Leongatha home on July 29, 2023.

But prosecutors alleged Patterson invited her estranged husband’s family under false pretences, possibly even faking a cancer diagnosis to ensure they attended.

Ian Wilkinson, the only survivor of the meal, testified that Patterson served the beef wellington to guests on separate plates from her own.

Toxicologists confirmed all four guests showed symptoms consistent with ingestion of deadly cap mushrooms, a highly lethal species known to grown in the area.

Don, Gail and Heather died within a week. Ian was placed in a coma and later required a liver transplant.

Patterson initially told investigators she had bought dried mushrooms from an Asian grocery store in Melbourne — but couldn’t say where.

She also denied owning a dehydrator — a claim later proven false.

The jury heard that she had lied to health officials, doctors and even police in the days following the lunch, hindering efforts to trace the source of the poisoning and save her victims’ lives.

During her eight days in the witness box, Patterson admitted she had foraged mushrooms since 2020, telling jurors: “They tasted good and I didn’t get sick.”

Alleged past attempts and eerie “death wall”

The horror didn’t stop with one deadly meal.

Police allege Patterson may have attempted to poison her ex-husband Simon Patterson on three separate occasions between 2021 and 2022.

Simon had previously written about a near-death illness that left him in a coma for 16 days and prompted doctors to urge his family to say their goodbyes — twice.

Adding to the sinister narrative, a tradesman who worked on Patterson’s house claimed he discovered a chilling “death wall” filled with threatening scribbles and eerie messages — including one that read: “You don’t [have] long to live.”

One neighbour claimed Patterson was an experienced mushroom forager, often seen picking fungi in the area.

Police later combed through her multiple Facebook accounts, where she allegedly boasted of being “very good at details”.

Traffic chaos as vehicle on fire on Dublin’s M50 causes delays amid ‘avoid area’ alert over protest on busy motorway

COMMUTERS on Dublin’s M50 motorway this morning were warned they would face delays following a vehicle fire on the busy route.

And those planning to travel on the M7 have been warned to “avoid the area” due to a protest taking place in the area.

Transport Infrastructure Ireland reported that a vehicle was on fire on the M50 northbound between J11 Tallaght and J10 Ballymount, affecting Lane 1 and Slip 1.

Dublin Fire Brigade and Gardai have been alerted and rushed to the scene.

Motorists are urged to drive with “caution and reduce speed” when approaching the hazard area and they are warned that the smoke from the fire is “affecting visibility”.

Transport Infrastructure Ireland also reported that a protest is taking place on the M7 Eastbound between J04 (Rathcoole) and J01, which is the connection between the M50 and the N7.

Motorists will experience delays and congestion as a result.

They are asked to “avoid the area” and plan an alternative route if possible to minimise the traffic flow on the busy Irish roads during the morning rush.

Meanwhile, there is currently congestion on the M50 Southbound between J3 and J13 Dundrum.

Traffic chiefs said: “Some delays to your journey may occur. When approaching the congestion location, reduce your speed and drive with caution.”

Some drivers reported on social media that it took them nearly 40 minutes from Dundrum to the Dublin Airport due to the heavy traffic.

Outside the capital, the traffic is relatively light with no reported congestion or traffic flow disruption.

Cork motorists are warned that the Jack Lynch Tunnel will be fully closed this week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

The tunnels will be out of operation from 9pm to 4am during the night, it will reopen during the day to accommodate everyday traffic.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT DISRUPTIONS

Meanwhile, Bus Eireann has cancelled three busy services in the Western/Northwestern region this morning, apologising for the “inconvenience” caused to passengers.

This impacts the following service:

  • Route 330: 06:00 Ennis to Shannon – Cancelled
  • Route 330: 06:55 Shannon to Ennis – Cancelled
  • Route 343: 07:20 Limerick to Shannon Airport – Cancelled

A spokesperson said: “Bus Eireann wish to apologise to passengers for any inconvenience.”

Irish Rail suffered some travel disruptions this morning, with the busy service being delayed to the capital

The 06:20 Portlaoise to Heuston service was delayed in Portlaoise due to a technical issue on the train.

In an update, the service departed the station 21 minutes later after solving the issue on the train.

No further major services were impacted this morning.

Vikki Wall stars as Meath cruise past Tipperary to reach LGFA All-Ireland semi-final

MEATH boss Shane McCormack is plotting a Royal revenge mission after his side saw off Tipperary in yesterday’s quarter-final clash.

The Leinster finalists sealed a TG4 All-Ireland semi-final showdown with holders Kerry — the team that beat them in last year’s quarter-finals — after sinking the Premier 2-17 to 1-6 in Navan.

Meath have reached the semi-finals for the first time since winning the All-Ireland in 2022

Vikki Wall and Niamh Gallogly goals put Meath — champions in 2021 and 2022 — into a commanding 2-9 to 0-2 interval lead and Tipp never recovered.

McCormack knows his team will not lack incentive against Kerry in the last four after going out at the quarter-final stage to the Kingdom in Tralee in each of the last two seasons.

The gaffer said: “I’m very proud of the girls. They’ve gotten a lot of criticism over the last year and a half.

“The last time they won the All-Ireland was in ’22. We’ve brought in a lot of girls and they’ve been working extremely hard. Very disappointed with the last two years down in Tralee, so we have them in a couple of weeks’ time and we’ll be ready for it.

“I have mentioned the last couple of months, we’ve been playing in patches. The last 15, 20 minutes we’ve been going out of games. It wasn’t lack of fitness, it was just managing it.

“In fairness to the girls, there was a lot of composure shown there and we kept going for the 60 minutes. Even the girls who came on, they finished the job. Super, delighted for them.”

Tipp never looked like catching them after the break although Aishling Moloney found the net in the closing stages.

Defeated chief Ed Burke added: “Meath came out of the blocks far quicker in the first half. I think physically they were just far stronger and they dominated us.

“When that comes at you in one burst . . . I think for ten minutes there they scored 2-5 and that’s the game in a nutshell.

“The second half, I thought we came out and we battled well. We gave a bit of a better account of ourselves. Look, Meath are deserving winners.”

And while McCormack is planning his reprisal, Daniel Moynihan is wary of a Dublin one coming his way.

Galway — runners-up to Kerry in 2024 — defeated Dublin in the quarter-finals last year and are on a collision course with their rivals on Sunday week after Saturday’s win over Waterford. And boss Moynihan knows what to expect this time around.

He admitted: “It’s going to be an interesting game. Dublin had a difficult situation last year going to extra-time and us just catching them at the end. So, I’m sure their tails will be up.

“They’ll be looking forward to playing us and getting a little bit of revenge against us.

GALLOPING GALWAY

Kate Slevin’s first-half penalty laid the platform for a 1-7 to 0-3 Galway interval lead over Waterford at Tuam Stadium before going on to win by 1-18 to 1-12.

Moynihan added: “We have a huge variation of scorers and that’s fantastic for me as a manager. It causes a little bit of confusion for other teams as well in knowing who to pick up. We started really, really well.”

Lauren McGregor — who finished with 1-7 of the Déise total — struck the net early in the second period but her side were unable to catch Galway.

Manager Tomás Mac a tSaoir admitted: “We just didn’t hit a lot of the markers we’d laid out in the first half. We probably left too much work to do in the second half.

“A spirited comeback in the second half but we just couldn’t squeak in close enough to maybe squeak ahead.

“Lots of things to build on. Those girls inside there know they’re not that far away from busting into the top section of counties that have been performing over the last five or six years. They have to start thinking about that now for the next couple of months.”

THE DEFIANT DUBS

Dublin joint-manager Paul Casey said they have plenty of room for improvement despite seeing off Cork by 3-15 to 0-7, with Hannah Tyrrell leading the way with 1-5.

The former senior men’s star explained: “I think for lots of the game, there were probably lots of aspects that we weren’t overly happy with.

“Our shooting let us down on a number of occasions, but in fairness to our girls they battled to the very end and their work-rate was superb throughout.

“We’re really pleased and delighted to be in the semi-final.” Cork chief Joe Carroll conceded: “I thought Dublin were superb all the way through.

“I think their pace, their tackling was at a different level to what we’re at and what we have been used to.

“I would definitely say the best team we have seen play this year so far. They mightn’t win an All-Ireland, but if they keep producing performances like that, they won’t be far off it.”

QUEEN OF THE KINGDOM

Síofra O’Shea scored a hat-trick to help Kerry to a 3-12 to 0-11 win over Kildare in Tralee on Saturday.

Kerry manager Mark Bourke said: “The goals were absolutely crucial.”

Armagh and Mayo ensured survival in the senior grade for 2026 on Saturday.

The Orchard got the better of Donegal by 0-15 to 0-5, while the Connacht finalists overcame Leitrim by 2-14 to 0-13

In the Intermediate Championship yesterday, Wicklow were victorious by 3-11 to 3-8 after extra-time over Offaly in an all-Leinster relegation clash to ensure survival in the second tier.

I went from being asked if I have grandkids to people refusing to believe I have a 17-year-old, here’s my cheap tips

A BEAUTY buff has spilled the beans on how she reverse aged in just six weeks thanks to easy tips – and there’s not an injectable in sight.

Sarah Snodgrass Selvidge went viral earlier this year after people allegedly assumed she was a gran – despite being 40 and not having any grandchildren.

The woman, 40, went viral after people wrongly assumed she was a nan
Woman asking how old she looks.
Since then, she’s managed to shave decades off her appearance – without a single injectable in sight

At the time, the 40-year-old – who many wrongly assumed was 55 and older – was covering her greys with a dark hair dye, cakey foundation and a thick lipliner.

Baffled by the reaction, Sarah said in the now-viral video: ”I know I’m 40 but c’mon now.”

The clip took the internet by storm, winning the mum more than 8.3million views, with kind-hearted viewers flooding to comments to offer her a helping hand.

One of the most common suggestions amongst the over 71k comments was re-learning how to do her make-up to slash decades off her face.

A beauty buff advised: ”It’s your makeup, the older we get the less we can wear. We have to change the technique too.

”What used to work, doesn’t work the same now.”

And it seems that since taking the internet by storm and being dubbed ”granny”, Sarah has taken the advice in – now looking better than ever.

Proudly showing off her new glow, the mum left everyone gobsmacked with the makeover – and it was all achieved by changing up her beauty routine.

”From that to today. I was told today I didn’t look old enough to have a 17-year-old child.

”How does one go from being asked if they have grandkids to being told they don’t look old enough to have a child that they have, in a matter of six weeks?

”With better make-up and better hair, of course.”

During the epic glow-up process, the mum, from the US, ditched the dark bob and has since embraced a lighter hairdo with soft waves.

Sarah has also said goodbye to extra heavy foundation that hid the glow underneath.

She told social media users: ”A much lighter base, let my skin shine through, with a glowy look.”

Whereas in the past the mum would draw her eyebrows on with a dark pencil, Sarah is now getting the brows done professionally and seems to be using a lighter tint that’s not so harsh.

The 40-year-old stunner has also said goodbye to extremely heavy eyeshadow – and now swears by a softer look, which has shaved years off her appearance.

In the clip, she could be seen looking as fresh as ever with a peachy eyeshadow that has light shimmer and enhanced the beauty of her eyes.

”Higher blush placement and higher bronzer placement” have also worked a treat in reverse ageing, no longer dragging her face down.

For her pout, the mum now uses a light-coloured gloss and has also ditched the harsh lip liner from the routine.

I live in London’s posh Notting Hill but don’t pay rent thanks to 30ft narrowboat – people are baffled by my bathroom

WHILST most Londoners are blowing their wages on shoebox-sized flats and sky-high bills, one savvy woman has found a genius way to dodge the capital’s rental chaos.

Shannon Roselane, an artist and video producer in her twenties, lives on a 30ft narrowboat moored in one of the capital’s poshest postcodes.

She purchased her home for £24,000
Tiktok

And instead of handing over thousands a month like her mates, she keeps her total living costs to a jaw-dropping £500 per month.

She’s managed to bag one of the most enviable addresses in London’s Notting Hill without shelling out for rent because she doesn’t pay any.

Shannon owns her boat outright after snapping it up for £24,000 with help from a bank loan, and now her only regular payments are the loan repayments and day-to-day essentials like gas.

The boat is solar-powered so she also doesn’t have to pay any electricity bills.

She told @joinrently “we’re basically in Notting Hill and I’m paying £500 a month you’d never be able to do that”.

And although her entire home is barely wider than a hallway, it’s bursting with charm – from a galley kitchen with a tiny gas cooker to solar-powered lights and a self-made mini version of the boat itself.

She even has an open hatch where she waves at ducks and nosy passers-by.

But life on the water isn’t all sunsets and swans and Shannon doesn’t shy away from showing the gritty side.

On TikTok, where she shares her off-grid adventures under the name @thatweirdboatgirl, she’s built a loyal following who tune in to watch her tackle the ups and downs of boat life.

And it seems there has been plenty.

From a toilet explosion to an incident where the entire boat “nearly sank”, Shannon’s had more than her fair share of drama.

One mooring disaster left her in tears after a fellow boater shouted at her just for tying up.

On another occasion, she returned from a short holiday to find someone had nicked part of her battery system, leaving her without electricity for weeks.

And the bathroom situation isn’t exactly glamorous.

With no plumbing, she relies on a cassette toilet, which is essentially a glorified bucket that has to be emptied by hand.

She’s not shy in admitting it’s “the worst part” of boat life.

Her narrowboat doesn’t have a proper bathroom or running water, and storage is so tight that clothes are crammed into every corner, often spilling onto her bed.

Her fridge runs on 12 volts, powered by solar panels, and she heats her home the old-school way, with layers and hot water bottles.

Still, for all the chaos and cramped quarters, there’s one thing her floating lifestyle gives her that city flats never could and it’s freedom.

Because she doesn’t have a permanent mooring, Shannon’s required to move every two weeks – a rule that’s actually become one of her favourite parts of the lifestyle.

If she ends up next to nightmare neighbours or gets bored of a location, she simply casts off and finds a new view.

And even with no garden or balcony, Shannon makes the most of the canal towpath, turning it into a performance space for her Tiny Boat Sessions – a project where she invites musicians aboard to film live gigs as they gently cruise through London’s waterways.

The Pros and Cons of Living on a narrowboat

It might seem an idyllic lifestyle living on a narrowboat and taking this at a slower pace but it’s not always plain sailing.

The Pros

Freedom – you get to choose where you stay and can move from the countryside to a city in possibly a few hours. If you don’t like your neighbours you can simply move.

Work anywhere – remote working has shot up with the Covid-19 pandemic and what could be better than working from a barge.

Declutter your lifestyle – There’s not a lot of space on a narrowboat but this can be an advantage as it forces your to get rid of things you don’t actually really need. Decluttering your life can do wonders for your wellbeing.

Life at a slower pace – anyone fed up of the 9-5 rat race and the pressure to earn money to pay for high-cost living can benefit from the easy-going life on a barge.

More environmentally friendly – while not entirely carbon neutral, living on a narrowboat can help the environment as you use less electricity, gas and fuel.

Improve fitness – living on a narrowboat doesn’t suit a sedentary lifestyle. There are endless tasks that will keep you active, such as operating locks, carrying coal and gas canisters, toilets to empty, wood to chop and weed hatches to clear.

Sense of community – many boaters feel a strong sense of community as they are with like-minded people to share tips and advice.

Saving money – one big advantage is the amount of money you can save. Big savings can be made on monthly living costs not only from using less gas and electricity but you don’t have any costly mortgage or rent payments to cover.

The Cons

Having to plan ahead – if you have a cruising licence you will need to move every 14 days, so you have to think about the future, where to next, do you have enough supplies to get there?

Limited space – narrowboats are restricted in space and you may find you feel claustrophobic living in a confined space. Plus, you may have to chuck out some prized possessions to fit everything you need in.

Lack of security – criminals may see a narrowboat as an easy target and you may need to invest in some quality security to keep your things safe.

Maintenance – Beware that you will need to learn about engine maintenance, such as how to repair a bilge pump or water pump. You will also need to ensure it is properly insulated and ventilated or you could be battling dampness and condensation.

The cost – while living on a boat is certainly cheaper than living in a property, it is not cost free. You have to pay for things like: a Canal and River Trust licence, insurance, engine and pump maintenance, blacking the hull, as well as running costs such as fuel and a TV licence.

Her followers are obsessed with the quirky lifestyle, although many admit they had no idea quite how tough it could be.

Shannon keeps it real, showing both the dreamy moments and the difficult ones.

It may be wobbly and cold at times, but for Shannon, it’s home and she wouldn’t trade it for a pricey flat or a life stuck paying someone else’s mortgage.

Before now, Shannon was living in a shared house with two friends – originally paying £900-a-month until her landlord upped her rent to £1,000-a-month.

The 29-year-old was having a stroll the Kings Cross canal in October 2022 when she came across a narrowboat for sale.

Shannon said it was a “no-brainer” to move onto a boat and is now saving thousands a year.

She said: “I saw the boat and thought ‘what if?’.

“I texted the owner and we set up a viewing for the following week.

“As soon as I saw the boat itself I saw it was £24k and I worked out that paying my loan from the bank to afford it would be £300-a-month.

“That is a massive saving from what I was paying in my house share.”

Meanwhile, Shannon’s not the only one who’s swapped a home for a life on the canal.

Robbie Cumming has been living on a narrowboat for a decade and has revealed everything about his life on the new series of Canal Boat Diaries.

He claims it’s the best way to holiday in the UK.
