Sligo Rovers’ Sam Sargeant ‘top-drawer’ says boss John Russell for ‘phenomenal’ saves against Shamrock Rovers

JOHN Russell has backed Sam Sargeant to keep pulling out the stops for Sligo Rovers.

The former Waterford No 1 has impressed for the Bit O’Red since the summer break.

The 40-year-old manager has been impressed with his goalkeeper this season

The Essex lad, 27, kept a clean sheet in a June 14 win over his former side before following it up with a fine display away to Bohemians just over a week ago.

And he kept it going with another impressive showing against Shamrock Rovers on Saturday night as the Bit O’Red drew 2-2 to stretch their unbeaten run to three matches.

Sargeant conceded twice to Dan Cleary and Josh Honohan after Jad Hakiki gave his side a two-goal lead.

But he played his part in a well-earned point for Russell’s men by pulling off several stunning saves, the best of which was a double stop to deny Hoops livewires Danny Mandroiu and Danny Grant.

Russell said: “He was top-class for us again. I’ve spoken about this a good bit over the last couple of weeks but Sam is top-drawer.

“His distribution is second to none but he’s now making the big saves and that double save when it was 2-1 was phenomenal.

“He got down low and got up again to parry the second shot away.”

Sargeant has found form for Sligo ahead of a big few weeks.

They face Derry City at home on Saturday before they face Dundalk away in the FAI Cup on Friday week.

The Bit O’Red also have Waterford in their sights in eighth as they try to avoid a relegation play-off. And Russell is hoping that his keeper can continue his fine form.

The Sligo chief said: “We needed those moments and we needed Sam in those moments.

“He’s in really good form, so we need him to maintain those levels.”

Foodies have been enjoying a range of different products encompassing the Dubai chocolate craze.

From chocolate bars to ice cream, there has been an option for everyone.

And now, shoppers can enjoy another new product that is set to be very popular.

One foodie has taken to social media to share a look at her latest find.

TikTok user @ellieinireland shared a short video to the platform for her followers.

In the caption of the post, she wrote: “Dubai chocolate muffin in @Lidl Ireland. Lidl are you KIDDING.”

At the beginning of the video, she shows the bakery section in a Lidl store.

She focuses on the new Dubai chocolate muffin, which looks delicious.

In a caption inserted into the post, she wrote: “New elite sweet treat unlocked in Lidl.”

The muffin costs just €1.79, meaning you can pick up the sweet treat without breaking the bank.

The muffins are brown, so are obviously chocolate flavoured, while the frosting on top is the impressive part.

On top of the muffin there is some light green drizzle with peanut bits sprinkled on top.

Also on top of the muffin is a green cream, likely pistachio flavoured, along with some chocolate pieces.

Viewers took to the comments section of the video to share their opinions, and ask some important questions.

One person asked: “Does it have a filling in the middle?”

Another user responded, saying: “Yes but it doesn’t taste like dubai chocolate.”

Someone else commented: “I need to try this omg.”

Another added: “unreal”.

MIXED REVIEWS

But not all shoppers were convinced, as a few noted that it wasn’t for them.

One person said: “They aren’t nice at all spit my one out.”

Another commenter wrote: “No thanks.”

Someone else said: “It’s actually not nice.”

One shopper simply said: “Not worth it.”

Many of the viewers tagged their friends to share the video.

The muffins are available in the bakery sections of Lidl Ireland stores now.

But according to the sticker on the price tag, they are only available “while stocks last” so shoppers should be quick.

Umpire at centre of Wimbledon controversy ABSENT from match-list after chiefs were forced to apologise for blunder

THE Wimbledon umpire at the centre of yesterday’s line calling controversy was absent from the match-list for today’s action.

German Nico Helwerth was in the chair for Sonay Kartal’s Centre Court battle with Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

Helwerth, 40, was in the chair during the controversy[/caption]

The match erupted into life with Pavlyuchenkova holding a game point while serving at 4-4 in the first set.

British favourite Kartal clearly missed a shot long, but the electronic line calling (ELC), run by tech company Hawk Eye, did not call it out.

As the tech system called “stop, stop” – Helwerth halted the point and told the crowd “there is a problem”.

Bizarrely no video replay, which would have clearly shown the ball out, was available to Helwerth – and following a three-minute delay the 40-year-old followed protocol by replaying the point.

Pavlyuchenkova, who should have already won the game, went on to lose it – meaning that Kartal would go on to serve for the first set.

The Russian fumed at Helwerth during the next change of ends, even going as far as to accuse Wimbledon of home player bias.

The 34-year-old said: “I don’t know if it’s in or it’s out. How do I know?

“How can you prove it? Because she is local, they can say whatever. You took the game away from me.”

Pavlyuchenkova went on to break back and eventually win the first set, and the match.

But she did not row back on her comments much in her post-match press conference, again pointing to Kartal being a “local” player.

Hours after the incident, Wimbledon chiefs released the following statement: “Following the Pavlyuchenkova vs Kartal match, we have had the opportunity to undertake further investigation, including speaking to the players, chair umpire, Hawk-Eye operators and Review Official.

“It is now clear that the live ELC system, which was working optimally, was deactivated in error on part of the server’s side of the court for one game by those operating the system.

“In that time there were three calls not picked up by live ELC on the affected part of the court. Two of these were called by the chair umpire, who was not made aware that the system had been deactivated.

“Following the third, the chair umpire stopped the match and consulted with the review official. It was determined that the point should be replayed. The chair umpire followed the established process.

“We have apologised to the players involved. We continue to have full confidence in the accuracy of the ball tracking technology. The live ELC system relies on the Hawk-Eye operators, the review official and the technology to work in harmony.

“This did not happen. In this instance there was a human error and as a consequence we have fully reviewed our processes and made the appropriate changes.”

Wimbledon ditched line judges this year in favour of electronic line calling.

The ELC is run by the same company, Hawk Eye, that operated the challenge system that was previously available to players.

On Helwerth, Pavlyuchenkova said: “The chair umpire was so confused.

“I think they just need to… chair umpire needs to maybe have a clear plan if that happens, ‘Okay, what am I going to do in this situation’.

“I think they are a little bit lost. They start calling everybody. They don’t know what to do.

“Instead [they should be able to say]: ‘if the system is down, then I’m going to take initiative and call this’.

“We probably should have this system like in football to review.”

Pavlyuchenkova will return to action tomorrow, when she faces No13 seed Amanda Anisimova on No1 Court.

SunSport has approached Wimbledon for comment.

A MUM and daughter killed in a horror road tragedy in Donegal were laid to rest side by side this afternoon.

Hundreds lined the streets of Carndonagh town centre for their funeral cortège.

Young Ella died at the scene of the two-vehicle collision on the Glentogher Road, just outside Carndonagh on 2nd July.

The following day, her mother Natalie, who worked as a nurse in a Carndonagh doctor’s surgery, passed away at the Royal Victoria Hospital.

Only two of the car’s occupants survived.

At the joint-funeral Mass, prayers were said for the speedy recovery of Natalie’s partner Tyrone Irwvin, who is in Altnagelvin Hospital and little Rhea-Rose, who is 18 months old and continues to be treated at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.

The young family had enjoyed happy times on a holiday to Portugal just two weeks ago.

Hundreds lined the streets of Carndonagh town centre as the beloved mother and daughter’s funeral cortège made its way to the church today.

Their funeral mass heard of Natalie’s caring ways, and how she made sure her children knew they were the “most loved in the world”.

Tributes to Ella celebrated a bubbly and entertaining girl who “lived such a full life in a very short six years”.

Amid their grief, the “only consolation” that Natalie’s family has from the tragedy is that they are now together.

Parish Priest Fr Con McLaughlin said the pain of the tragedy has been felt throughout the whole community.

LIVES ROBBED

He recounted the day that Natalie, Tyrone, and the children began a journey in their little red Opel Corsa, a journey that “would be a journey which was to rob them of their young lives”.

Fr McLaughlin said: “The pain is felt not only in Carndonagh, but also throughout our Inishowen and further afield because it provides painful memories of all too many similar tragedies that have taken place throughout the region.”

Fr McLaughlin shared that Natalie’s mother offered one heart-wrenching comment when she said: ‘The only consolation I have is now that they are together’.

He added: “Two young lives taken. No one has the answers.”

GIFTS PRESENTED

Gifts and eulogies from Natalie’s family honoured the passions and lovable characters of both mother and daughter.

Natalie’s nursing uniform was presented to the altar. A tribute from her brother Tiernan recalled how much she loved her job and cared for everyone.

He said: “Our Nat was the best big sister, mum, friend, daughter. She put everyone before herself, maybe sometimes a little too much, but it was obvious how much of a caring person she really was.”

Also among the gifts was a Labubu toy of Ella’s.

FINAL JOURNEY

She loved dancing and fashion and had been so proud to wear a Labubu attached to her shorts at a recent dance class, where she had many friends, just as she did at St Patrick’s Girls National School.

The funeral concluded with an emotional pause as Ella’s favourite song, Die With A Smile by Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga, filled the air.

The congregation listened to lyrics which included; “Nobody’s promised tomorrow” and “If the world was ending, I want to be next to you,” before departing for Natalie and Ella’s final journey.

The local community has raised more than €43,000 through the ‘Honouring Natalie & Ella – A Community’s Love‘ GoFundMe.

Horror moment brothers ‘brawl with cops in Manchester Airport after one headbutted passenger in Starbucks row’

THIS is the moment two brothers brawled with cops in Manchester Airport after headbutting a passenger in Starbucks, a court heard.

Mohammed Fahir Amaaz, 20, and Muhammad Amaad, 26, allegedly lashed out at three officers – leaving one with a broken nose.

Jurors heard cops had been scrambled to deal with the pair following an earlier altercation at a Starbucks in the airport.

Footage played to the court previously showed Amaaz headbutting passenger Abdulkareem Ismaeil in the cafe and punching him on July 23.

Further video played to jurors today showed the alleged “high level of violence” displayed to the police officers.

PC Zachary Marsden and PC Ellie Cook – both armed – and PC Lydia Ward, who was unarmed, could be seen approaching the brothers in the car park of Terminal 2.

Amaaz resisted as police tried to move him away from a payment machine to arrest him before Amaad intervened.

The court heard Amaaz threw ten punches – including one to PC Ward’s face that sent her crashing to the ground with blood pouring from her nose.

He is also said to have kicked PC Marsden and twice struck firearms officer PC Cook with his elbow.

Both Amaaz and PC Marsden then fell to the ground before the officer gets up and appears to “stamp” his foot towards Amaaz’s head, it is alleged.

Junior counsel Adam Birkby said the cop “doesn’t appear to connect with Mr Amaaz”.

As the brawl continues, the police officers get their Tasers out before managing to handcuff the brothers with the help of other cops.

At one point, PC Ward could be seen appearing to cry as she holds her nose.

The court heard previously that the brothers had gone to meet their mum at the airport on July 23.

She had allegedly been involved in some sort of incident Abdulkareem either on their flight or shortly after it.

As the brothers passed by the Starbucks, the mum pointed out Abdulkareem to her sons as he sat with his wife and children in the cafe.

Prosecutor Paul Greaney KC said: “At just after 8.20pm, the defendants entered Starbucks and confronted Abdulkareem Ismaeil.

“During that confrontation, Mohammed Fahir Amaaz delivered a headbutt to the face of Abdulkareem Ismaeil and punched him, then attempted to deliver other blows, all in front of a number of children.

“The prosecution case is that this was obviously unlawful conduct.”

Jurors heard PC Marsden suffered “post-concussion syndrome” and was left with a “severe headache” for three days, dizziness, forgetfulness and bruising and swelling.

PC Ward was left with a broken nose and needed surgery under general anaesthetic, it was said.

The court was told both Amaaz and Amaad have claimed they acted in self-defence.

Amaaz denies assaulting PC Marsden and PC Ward, causing them actual bodily harm.

He is also accused of the assault of PC Cook and the earlier assault of Abdulkareem Ismaeil at Starbucks.

Amaad has pleaded not guilty to assaulting PC Marsden, causing actual bodily harm.

The trial continues.

From constipation to ‘tennis elbow’ all bizarre ailments netting Brits brand-new cars under corrupted Motability scheme

TAXPAYERS are funding cars for drivers with ailments including constipation and “tennis elbow”.

The £600 million-a-year Motability scheme offers essential support to individuals with severe physical or mental disabilities.

TikTok
Other Brits are claiming new motors under the Motability scheme, bragging they’re ‘driven around in style’[/caption]

But new figures have laid bare how the scheme – which vital to giving those with physical or mental disabilities access to reliable transportation – has been corrupted beyond recognition.

The keys to 40 cars were allocated to individuals with ‘tennis elbow’, a condition that “causes pain around the outside of the elbow” but is typically resolved with rest, according to the NHS.

And 20 individuals suffering from constipation made use of Motability, along with ten people struggling with a ‘failure to thrive’.

Over 32,000 new cars were handed over for people suffering anxiety or other depressive disorders, while 800 went to individuals with obesity.

While obesity can lead to mobility challenges in severe cases, some believe this inclusion is too broad and leaves the programme’s goodwill open to exploitation.

What’s more, the data shows that 770 cars were leased to individuals with alcohol misuse problems, with 220 going to those with issues around drugs.

The data was released in response to a Parliamentary Question, published by the Guido Fawkes website and reported on by the Daily Mail.

The scheme, which costs some £600m and is funded by the Department for Work and Pensions, supports around 589,000 claimants in England and Wales as of 2024.

It allows beneficiaries to exchange part of their Personal Independence Payment (PIP) or Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for a car, powered wheelchair, or scooter, essentially giving them options tailored to their needs.

It also allows friends or relatives to drive the vehicle on their behalf of the claimant, further expanding its usefulness.

Furthermore, the initiative drives a significant portion of new car purchases in Britain – accounting for one in five sales across the country.

This heavily supporting the automotive industry in the process and, in turn, creating jobs.

Conditions that qualify for taxpayer-funded cars under Motability scheme

  • ADHD/ADD: 9,090
  • Alcohol misuse: 770
  • Anxiety and depressive disorders: 32,160
  • Anxiety disorders – other/type not known: 2,600
  • Back pain: 6,760
  • Constipation: 20
  • Depressive disorder: 7,460
  • Elbow disorders – other/type not known: 50
  • Obesity: 800
  • OCD: 650
  • Phobia – social: 190
  • Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis): 40
  • Allergy risk of anaphylaxis unknown or not fully assessed: 10
  • Failure to thrive: 10
  • Food intolerance: 20

It provides those who are physically or mentally unable to gain access to reliable transportation – which can reduce isolation and improve mental health, thus enabling them to engage more fully in society.

But there are claims that people are exploiting the system.

Some influencers have even been found to boast online about obtaining these vehicles for minimal costs, and even advising others on how to maximise their benefits.

Earlier this year, we reported on one balaclava-wearing influencer who gave viewers a step-by-step guide to obtaining PIP and Motability – and even suggested followers could take the government to court if turned down.

In one video, he shows viewers how to pick up an Abarth 695 Sport, usually worth £31,000, for “basically free”.

He said: “To get this car, all you have to do is pay £599.

“This car is an automatic with nearly 200 brake horsepower, and it does 0-60 in 6.5 seconds.

The Sun Says

Motability scheme has been corrupted beyond recognition by obvious scammers

CAN there be a greater example of how our welfare system has spiralled out of control than the grotesque monster that Motability has become?

For decades the scheme provided a lifeline for profoundly disabled people.

But since Covid, Motability has been allowed to mushroom into a massive industry way past its original remit.

A system designed to help the most vulnerable use their Government PIP payments has now warped into a £7billion company supplying one in five new cars in Britain. How?

Because thousands claiming to have issues such as anxiety have been allowed to sign up for luxury BMWs and Mercedes 4x4s.

Taxpayers are now even coughing up for people who say they are depressed to claim free driving lessons.

The Sun is NOT suggesting genuinely disabled people shouldn’t be protected.

But Motability has been corrupted beyond recognition by hordes of obvious scammers.

Labour must ignore the hand-wringers, concentrate on the genuinely needy.

And end this insanity once and for all.

Hardly good news when debt has ballooned and billions for defence spending is urgently needed.

She’s right to try to slash the burdensome red tape unnecessarily tying up businesses.

But here’s a couple of bigger ideas for the Chancellor to add to her growth wish list:

Axe Ed Miliband’s ruinous Net Zero targets.

And stop whacking taxes on families and business.

“Did I mention it has a full exhaust system, which absolutely sounds insane?”

And another user explained in a video how her four-year-old autistic daughter would be “driven around in style” after replacing their Vauxhall Zafira with a new Skoda Kodiaq.

The family motor is typically worth £36,000, but can be picked up on Motability for just £3,299.

John O’Connell, at the Taxpayers’ Alliance, said: “The Government must look at the criteria before this situation gets worse.”

But Motability Operations said: “To use the Motability Scheme, you must receive a higher rate mobility allowance.

“Eligibility for the allowance is determined and awarded by the Government.”

Another systemic issue flagged by critics is the three-year replacement cycle for vehicles provided through the scheme.

It’s argued that this timeframe is unnecessarily short, given the durability and longevity of modern day motors, while replacing vehicles every three years escalates costs and raises concerns about wastefulness.

Labour peer John Mann questioned the necessity of such frequent replacements.

He said: “Motability is making too much money. It needs tighter criteria. There needs to be a return of some of this money they have accrued to the exchequer.

“I also question why it is necessary for its customers to change to a new vehicle so regularly. Cars last a long time and the whole point of Motability must be to help people live a normal life. Three years per car is too short a time frame.’

While concerns around the scheme’s overall financial management, eligibility criteria and misuse are certainly valid, the Motability scheme remains a lifeline for hundreds of thousands of Brits with genuine mobility challenges.

Many believe reforming the programme to address certain issues and prevent exploitation could ensure it continues to fulfil its mission – without compromising its vital role in supporting disabled individuals.
