‘No guarantees’ – Stephen Kenny warns St Pat’s fans ahead of Europa Conference League qualifiers

STEPHEN Kenny has warned his St Pat’s players they will have to fight for their lives in Europe.

Kenny had his side’s Conference League opponents Hegelmann Litauen watched in their 5-2 win over Siauliai on Saturday.

St Pat’s narrowly missed out on Conference League qualification last season, losing to İstanbul Başakşehir in the play-off round

The Lithuanian outfit will be in Richmond Park on Thursday facing a Saints team that has not won for six matches, scoring just once in that run.

Last year, European football sparked an upturn in their form but boss Kenny is not assuming the same thing will happen again.

The Inchicore supremo, 53, said: “There’s no guarantees just because you did it before. We’ve got to fight for our lives.

“We definitely have to do that. And we’ve got to give everything of ourselves to get the victory that we need in Europe. And that’s what we must strive to do.

“And we have to come back in the league, our last two games are against Waterford and Sligo in the third phase.

“We must compete in those games as well. They’re very important games for us as well. We’ve got to get up levels.”

The ex-Ireland boss did highlight how he has had to make do without key players for long periods of time this season to explain in part why Pat’s lie sixth, 17 points behind Shamrock Rovers, when they were many people’s title favourites.

He said: “Listen, there are no excuses, everyone has their issues but the rhythm of the forwards . . . Aidan Keena started off like a house on fire. He got player of the month in the league, but he did a T-junction (hamstring) and was out for seven weeks with that.

“And we fired him in early enough then. But Mason Melia had his back issue and he needed three months off. Coming into the season, he didn’t really do a pre-season.

“And then had some osteopubis, which he missed three-and-a-half weeks with, and then we put him back in. So we haven’t been just getting that rhythm for the two main forwards, although they both scored six each and that’s up there.

“Then the creative players behind, Romal Palmer has been out for the whole season, more or less. And Chris Forrester was out for eight weeks.

“He came back, put himself in for a game against Waterford, but he wasn’t quite right and got re-injured. So overall, he was sort of eight weeks with that little cameo in between.

“Some people are incredible, like Zach Elbouzedi, or somebody like that. But different players find it harder to get to the level then when they come back.

“Players like Aidan and Chris, they can’t just come back after those periods, two months out and just turn it on again. It can be a challenge.

“But excuses are excuses. Putting the ball in the back of the net, you’ve got to do that regardless.

“And we’ve enough good players and we just hit a barren period. Sometimes that’s difficult to actually explain.

“But we just have to fight hard, dig in and give ourselves every chance on Thursday.”

DUBLIN HISTORY

Hegelmann manager Andrius Skerla was part of the Zalgiris side which won in Inchicore and knocked St Pat’s out of the Europa League in 2013.

He had previously played for Dunfermline in Scotland but that was before Kenny’s stint in charge there.

Kenny said: “He was very fondly remembered, he was a good player, yeah. But our paths never crossed.”

Hegelmann lie second in Lithuania’s A Lyga, six points behind leaders Kauno Zalgiris, with eight matches left to play. And wary Kenny is expecting a tough test in three days’ time.

He said: “They’re mid-season, they’ve players of different nationalities and they’ve done well. They play on an Astro Turf pitch, it’s a small ground and we have to adapt to that.

“But first of all is a home game here and we have to make sure that we’re ready. Lithuanian teams will always be very competitive, I feel. So we have to put in a strong performance on Thursday night.”

Warning for Irish beachgoers over hidden fish with venomous fins that cause intense pain & can send you to hospital

AN URGENT warning has been issued for thousands of people who are set to bask in the sun at the beaches in Ireland this week.

With the temperatures expected to reach the highs of 28C, heading to the beaches to catch some rays and soak in the cold water sounds like a dream.

Despite thousands of beachgoers set to reach the waters, a warning has been issued over a pesky fish that can pose a major pain risk.

The Weeverfish is common on beaches across the country that have sand, they are usually found in the warm, shallow water in the hours before and after low tide.

However, the fish is different compared to most fish as it doesn’t have a swim bladder, meaning they sink to the bottom as soon as they stop swimming.

And they are difficult to spot as they spend most of their time buried under the sand.

The poisonous fish have sharp spines containing venom on their dorsal fin.

So if you accidentally step on one before spotting it in time, you will be experiencing intense pain that will occur in the first two hours.

The pain will be immediate, resulting in swelling, numbness and warmth.

People who have accidentally stepped on the Weeverfish are urged to seek assistance from a lifeguard if available or call the National Poisons Information Centre of Ireland (NPIC) on 01 8092166.

They are encouraged to submerge the affected limb or wound in hot water, as hot as can be tolerated, for up to 90 minutes or until the pain eases.

As the sting can result in numbness, immerse the unaffected limb as well, which may prevent inadvertent scalding.

Avoid using cold applications, as they may worsen the discomfort.

Paracetamol can be considered to relieve pain if approved by the NPIC or doctors

PAIN KILLER ALERT

Care should be taken when pain relief is given that thermal burns do not occur due to the effects of the pain killer masking the temperature of the water used.

The affected site should be examined, and embedded spines should be removed.

Temperatures could hit 28C this weekend, with Ireland’s beaches expected to be packed as thousands flock to the seaside for a cooling dip.

Friday is currently forecast to be the hottest day of the week, with temperatures expected to blaze between 22C and 28C.

A “very warm or hot continental airmass” will feed up across Ireland with sunny conditions occurring widely.

The second hottest day of the week will be Thursday, another dry day for most with warm spells of sunshine.

Temperatures will reach highs of 21C to 26C in just light southwest or variable breezes.

‘Crew screamed “evacuate” so we LEAPT from plane’s wings’: Inside Ryanair panic as airline accused of downplaying horror

PASSENGERS have claimed it was “pure hell and chaos” on the Ryanair flight where people were injured when they leapt metres down from the wing.

Protocol allegedly went out the window when a steward ran down the aisle screaming “evacuate, evacuate” and panicked passengers clamoured to escape after a false fire alert.

Footage of the Manchester-bound plane on the tarmac in Palma, Majorca shows a cluster of people on the wing – with some plunging to the ground.

Multiple passengers required surgery for badly broken bones after crunching onto the tarmac metres below – despite the airline claiming only “very minor injuries (ankle sprains, etc.)” were sustained.

Francine Elkinson, 57, suffered a bad break to her right foot and had to undergo a three-hour operation to have pins and plates inserted.

Speaking from her hospital bed in Palma on Monday, Francine told The Sun: “I was watching a film when suddenly they told everyone to evacuate.

“There was an open door and I just went through it. I was so terrified and in a daze that I didn’t know what was going on, and I jumped.”

Francine said she was among three people taken to the hospital in Palma – and believes there were six overall with broken bones.

Emergency services in Majorca reported that 18 people had been injured in total.

Ryanair has organised for Francine to return to the UK on a flight this evening – but she said she is “terrified” and doesn’t want to fly again.

Her friend, Danielle Kelly, 56, was back in surgery on Monday for a third operation after breaks to her foot, wrist and elbow all needed pins inserting.

Other passengers who were onboard have blamed the Ryanair staff for the “totally chaotic” evacuation.

Richard and Jo Barton, from Saddleworth, Greater Manchester, slammed the airline team’s behaviour as “appalling”, insisting: “They completely failed.”

Richard, in his late sixties, said: “I can’t believe what Ryanair are currently claiming.

“They’re brushing it off as just a few sprained ankles and banal injuries- that’s not what happened.

Jo, in her early 60s, said: “I witnessed a woman with a dislocated leg in a weird angle, it wasn’t just sprains and bruises.

“In reality, it was pure hell and chaos. I could see men even pushing women and children out of the way to get out for safety.

“People were scrambling to get off the plane through the exit doors leading to the wings, with people leaping 15 feet from the wings to the ground.

“Those people broke their arms, legs and shoulders and they were screaming and crying in agony.”

Richard pins the chaos on the “lack of training and terrible handling” by the team of air stewards.

The ‘chaotic’ evacuation happened on the runway of Majorca’s largest airport[/caption]

He said: “One them was yelling: ‘Evacuate, evacuate!’

“Some lads pushed the emergency exit open over the wing, because that’s what you’re told to do in the safety briefing, and people went out onto the wing.

“Everyone thought there was a fire and there was nobody at all there to direct them – so some people jumped out of panic.”

The former operations director believes even one of the air stewardesses broke her leg after plunging from the wing.

“I know this because I helped carry her 50 years away from the plane,” he said.

The couple claims that after the passengers evacuated, wounded people were lying around in an unsafe area near the plane – and were forced to wait up to 30 minutes for medical help.

Ryanair claimed that passengers suffered ‘very minor injuries’ and apologised for the ‘inconvenience’

Passengers were left hanging around with minimal information until a new flight was finally arranged at 7am, Richard said.

Ryanair’s said: “This flight from Palma to Manchester (4 July) discontinued take-off due to a false fire warning light indication.

“Passengers were disembarked using the inflatable slides and returned to the terminal.

“While disembarking, a small number of passengers encountered very minor injuries (ankle sprains, etc.) and crew requested immediate medical assistance.

“To minimise disruption to passengers, we quickly arranged a replacement aircraft to operate this flight, which departed Palma at 07:05 this morning.

“We sincerely apologise to affected passengers for any inconvenience caused.”

The airline has been approached for further comment.

Back in 1985, Sue Jenkins strutted onto Coronation Street as Gloria Todd, the cheeky barmaid at the famous Rovers Return.

She quickly became a staple behind the bar, rubbing shoulders with soap legend Julie Goodyear, aka Bet Lynch.

But Sue’s soap career didn’t stop there – she spent nine years playing Jackie Corkhill in Brookside from 1992 to 2001, then popped up in Emmerdale for a quick five-episode stint as Bonnie Drinkwater in 2008.

But there’s a twist soap that fans didn’t see coming.

Sue’s got a famous son who also rocked the Corrie cobbles.

Richard Fleeshman, who played Craig Harris, joined the cast in 2002 as part of the witness protection Harris family.

Craig’s story was packed with drama – adopting a goth look that drove his dad mad and becoming Rosie Webster’s first boyfriend.

The tension exploded when his sister Katy murdered their dad after a messy fallout over her secret fling with Martin Platt.

After the family tragedy, Katy took her own life, and Craig planned to run off to Berlin with Rosie.

But in the end, he left Weatherfield alone, waving goodbye to the cobbles for good in 2006.

For years, viewers have watched them on-screen without suspecting a thing – but behind the scenes, their bond runs much deeper than just acting.

The revelation that Sue Jenkins and Richard Fleeshman share a real-life Corrie connection has left fans absolutely gobsmacked on social media.

Taking to X – formerly Twitter – one wrote: “That’s Richard fleeshmans mum!”

Another added: “Her real life son played Craig Harris, son of Psycho Tommy!”

Soap's most harrowing teen storylines

We take a look at other harrowing teen soap storylines from soaps Coronation Street, EastEnders, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks.

Belle Dingle’s schizophrenia in Emmerdale – Belle’s (Eden Taylor-Draper) traumatic journey in Emmerdale took a dark turn when, after accidentally killing her best friend Gemma at just 16, her mental health began to spiral.

The storyline, which saw Belle struggling with her grief and guilt, showcased her battle with hearing Gemma’s voice inside her head, leading to a dramatic decline in her well-being.

Hannah Ashworth’s anorexia in Hollyoaks – Viewers were horrified as they watched Hannah (Emma Rigby), a seemingly innocent teen, spiral into dangerous behavior, starving herself in an attempt to achieve what she thought was the ideal body.

As Hannah’s condition worsened, the storyline became more intense, culminating in her being hospitalised for two months as she fought for her life.

Bethany Platt’s grooming ordeal in Coronation Street – Vulnerable schoolgirl, played by Lucy Fallon, was at the centre of one of Corrie’s darkest storylines to date when she fell under the spell of her older boyfriend and sexual predator.

The controversial scenes saw Nathan groom and manipulate the 16-year-old before coercing her into sleeping with his friends, with one of them raping her.

Whitney Dean’s abuse from Tony in EastEnders – Since the age of 12, she had been in a twisted relationship with her stepmum Bianca’s boyfriend, Tony King. The predator had groomed young Whit (Shona McGarty), making her believe she was in love and planning to run away with him.

On her 16th birthday, the traumatised teen finally revealed the years of abuse to Bianca. Tony was swiftly sent to prison sentenced for 13 years.

A third penned: “Wow, all this time watching and I never knew that, I can see her son in that photo now.”

Now 36, Richard is a Broadway and West End actor who has starred in everything from Legally Blonde to Ghost the Musical and Company.

He’s currently performing as the unnamed Soldier in Stephen Sondheim’s final work Here We Are at the National Theatre.

Meanwhile, cousins Brooke Vincent, who played Sophie Webster, and Ellie Leach, who played Faye Windass, also both appeared on the ITV soap.

And Greg Wood, who played the late Rick Neelan, was actually the real-life brother of Matt Milburn, who played footballer Tommy Orpington.

The 25-year-old from Bristol was dumped from the villa in previously aired scenes.

Taking to Instagram, Shea addressed his time on the show – while answering fans’ questions.

Shea replied by writing: “Picking Yas in the recoupling”, accompanied by a laughing emoji.

Yasmin didn’t deny Shea’s shock claim and simply replied: “Fair enough.”

Elsewhere, another follower asked the ex-islander: “Why did you never pull Shakira for chats?”

He answered: “We had quite a few chats. The producers just chose not to show that for whatever reason.”

English seaside town reveals plans for £1million upgrades of its famous pier

ONE of the UK’s most famous piers is set to get a massive £1million upgrade.

Deal Pier, in Kent, dates back to 1838, although has been rebuilt twice since then.

The pier first opened in the 1800s[/caption]

And new plans to upgrade the pier have been revealed.

It includes replacing the covering on the six pier legs, as well as works to reduce the corrosion underwater.

Dover District Council’s (DDC) said the works will “secure the valued asset for future generations to enjoy”.

The 1,026ft pier was first destroyed in 1857 due to storm damage.

It was rebuilt, only to be destroyed when a ship crashed into it in 1940.

The current pier structure was opened in 1957 by Prince Philip.

It has already undergone a £140,000 renovation, upgrading some of the structures.

The main attraction on the brutalist pier is Deal Pier Kitchen, serving food and drink right at the end.

The Sun’s Emma Ledger previously visited the pier in Deal.

She said: “It stretches out from the wide pebbled beach, dotted with traditional fishing boats.

“Above the waves, the newly refurbished Deal Pier Kitchen is the perfect spot for a cuppa and chill.

“Gaze across the sea and on a clear day you can even spy France.

“Locals swim all year round – pack your cossie if you’re feeling brave.”

A new attraction is even coming to Deal soon.

The £40million Seahive will have a massive artificial surf lagoon, as well as well as a 120 room hotel and skatepark.

The Times named Deal as one of the best places to live in the UK too, back in 2022.

In the mean time, we’ve rounded up the best hidden bays and beaches across Kent.

Pat Ryan admitted aspects of Cork’s display vs Dublin were poor – I can spot them & so can Liam Cahill

CORK hit seventh heaven against Dublin on Saturday — but they’ll be glad of one or two of those goals against Tipperary in the final.

There’s no way they’re going to get seven goals like that again, and certainly not in two weeks.

Babs feels Shane Barrett was one of several Cork players who didn’t play to their best

From a Cork point of view, Pat Ryan said in his interview there were a few areas he wasn’t happy with — and I’m able to point them out myself.

Goalkeeper Patrick Collins gave four points to Dublin with four puckouts, wherever he found them. It was ridiculous stuff and he lashed one ball out over the line as well.

The wides that Shane Barrett had were cruel — he missed some handy scores.

Dublin won most of the ball coming down the right wing to Diarmuid Healy and Brian Hayes. The Dubs’ backs won most of those balls facing their opponent.

Cork are also going to go into the final with two corner-backs that I wouldn’t be happy with based on their performances — Niall O’Leary and Seán O’Donoghue — because Dublin still scored 2-21.

Nobody needs to remind Ryan of the pressure on him to win the All-Ireland and his Rebels are red-hot favourites.

But I would have sleepless nights thinking of those areas, and Liam Cahill will know how to hurt them when it all comes down to it on July 20.

It was no surprise that they produced it against Dublin on Saturday but Ryan has plenty of work to do in the next two weeks.

And at the end of the day, the surprise that Dublin produced against Limerick was one of the biggest shocks ever.

But they had no real preparation for what Cork were going to throw at them.

I hope they learn from Saturday and they tell Niall Ó Ceallacháin that his priority is to have a team ready for 2026 because next year is a huge opportunity for them.

This Kilkenny squad are clearly not untouchable and Wexford and Galway are down and out so they have a chance of coming through to be THE team in Leinster.

Conceding seven goals is a stark reality check for any team.
Cork probably surprised themselves at having seven goals that easy. It’s up to Ó Ceallacháin to lead now.

There’s plenty of former hurlers living in the Dublin area that have lived through it and gone through it from every county. So there’s an abundance of resources behind Dublin now.

It’s taken Cork 20 years to get to where they are now — and it took Limerick 45 years to get back since 1973.

Dublin have the youth and the resources and that’s a bigger advantage than most.
