Watch RTE pundits’ contrasting reaction to full-time whistle of Tipperary’s epic win over Kilkenny

LIAM Sheedy and Jackie Tyrrell finished up on opposite ends of an emotional rollercoaster at full-time of Tipperary vs Kilkenny.

Former Premier manager Sheedy was naturally delighted at seeing his county prevail 4-20 to 0-30.

Meanwhile the Cats legend had to swallow his sadness and persist through the post-match coverage.

He did graciously offer a handshake to Sheedy in a brilliant moment captured by the national broadcaster’s sideline cameras.

Both men as well as neutral observer Ursula Jacob acknowledged that Darragh McCarthy’s second yellow card was harsh if the correct call by the letter of the law.

That slightly contentious decision has been completely overshadowed by another controversial moment however.

Human error was responsible for the scoreboard incorrectly awarding Tipperary an extra point from the 70th minute onwards.

Crucially, referee James Owen did not make the same mistake.

But Kilkenny players have a right to feel aggrieved considering they chased a goal unnecessarily thinking their deficit was then four points rather than three.

While analysing how the confusion arose on The Sunday Game, Brendan Cummins noted that one umpire put his hand up to catch the sliotar as Noel McGrath’s shot went just wide while the other official signalled it was wide.

Kilkenny then had two attacks where firstly Eoin Cody and secondly John Donnelly needlessly went for goal from long-range.

Joe Canning outlined how Kilkenny’s players clearly forced the issue as they felt they were in a bigger hole than they were in actuality.

Speaking about them thinking they were initially down by four immediately after McGrath’s phantom point, he emphasized: “Psychologically that’s huge because then you feel you have to get a goal and a point.

“When you’re only two points down you’re thinking we can tap one over and then try and win the puck-out so you can tap another one over.

“So for Kilkenny’s players, psychologically, chasing three points (that late on) is way different from chasing two points.”

Later on in the programme Canning returned to just how vital Robert Doyle’s goal-line block from Donnelly’s rasping effort had been.

The Galway great added: “He’s lucky because if they got that goal at the end of the match, Kilkenny would’ve won by the referee.

“Kilkenny would’ve been a point up yet everybody in the stadium would’ve thought it was a drawn match. So he saved the GAA I’d say!”

GAA INVESTIGATION

The GAA have launched an investigation after the incident marred what was an otherwise incredible occasion.

In a statement last night, Croke Park chiefs are awaiting referee Owen’s match report to get to the bottom of the confusion.

It said: “The GAA can confirm that the official score at the end of the Tipperary v Kilkenny GAA Hurling All-Ireland Senior Championship Semi-Final was 4-20 to 0-30.

“The GAA acknowledges there was confusion over the final score. The CCCC is awaiting the full referees report in order to establish how the initial mistake occurred.”

Muireann and her fiancé – who she got engaged to in 2021 – were on the hunt to buy a house for four years.

However, the search for her forever home wasn’t easy and the host has even previously recalled people crying at viewings.

But after a tirelessly search, the popular presenter finally secured a set of keys to her very own house.

Yesterday, the happy couple were more than delighted to say their final goodbye to the cottage which they had rented in Harold’s Cross since 2017.

After weeks of packing, the Irish host posted a picture of herself holding up a duster in an empty living room, and wrote: “The GOAT of cleaning this house.

“Bye Harold’s Cross, I loved it here.”

In the next snap, the 41-year-old showed off a large blow-up bed which was placed inside a bedroom in the new home.

She joked in her caption: “Hello lover.”

After a day of organising the new pad, Muireann treated herself to a relaxing shower in her newly revamped bathroom.

The TV star snapped a photo of the gorgeous forest green tiles inside the shower and a unique shelf inset.

The host gushed after her pamper evening as she penned: “First shower here and sweet divine Jesus, it was the stuff of dreams.”

She then tagged the company which had renovated the bathroom and said: “You absolute babes @eco_scene.”

The excited star told fans that her new “combi-boiler life” was “elite” and exclaimed: “It’s like living in a hotel.”

TOUGH JOURNEY

Muireann has been open about her struggle to finally find her forever home.

She recently told VIP Magazine: “Look, listen, it’s a housing crisis and that is not lost on me, but for someone who has a good job I’ve been very bad at this house business and the disappointment of going sale agreed on a house and losing out has been real.

“I think during that time, personally for me, the old adage, ‘What’s for you won’t pass you by’ was said a lot, and every time I heard it, I wanted to stick pins in my eyes.”

Muireann then laughed as she added: “I was like, ‘Surely lads, there has to be something for me out there’. Now it just feels like this is where I was meant to be. I’m delighted.”

However, after finding her dream home the TV star revealed it’s a place she’s “very happy in”.

She said: “It’s making me calmer knowing I’m moving towards something that I’ve wanted and worked for, for a very long time. It’s also a place I feel genuinely very happy in, it’s lovely, it’s chill.”

Heartache as ‘kind & funny’ Irishman dies while on holiday in France & tributes pour in for ‘absolute gentleman’

HEARTBREAKING tributes have been paid to an “incredibly intelligent” and “funny” man who sadly passed away while on holiday in France.

Dr Anthony Beirne from Annaduff in Co Leitrim and St Luke’s, Cork, passed away while on holiday abroad in France on June 22.

A heartbreaking notice reads that he will be “sadly missed by his wife June, son Francis, parents Billy and Peggy, brother Patrick, sister Bernadette, sister-in-law Sindy.”

He is also survived and missed by his uncle Michael, niece Siobhan, cousins, relatives, neighbours, work colleagues in Cork and friends.

Dr Beirne’s funeral mass will take place at 11am on Thursday in St Mary’s Church. Private cremation will follow afterwards.

The family has asked people not to bring flowers to private wake or mass gatherings but to donate to the Kevin Bell Reparation Trust.

His death has sent shockwaves through the local community, with family, friends and loved ones paying tribute to Anthony in heartbreaking messages.

A University College Cork classmate paid tribute to Anthony: “Please accept my deepest condolences and that of my family at this sad time. Our thoughts are with you.”

A former colleague said: “I worked with Tony a few years back and remember him as an incredibly intelligent and often very funny man, who loved to travel.

“I had a bereavement over 18 months after leaving that team and was extremely touched when a card arrived to my home from Tony, even though we were no longer in contact; he hadn’t had my exact address but had put down what he knew and it had somehow reached me.

“I always appreciated that thought and effort and will always think of that when I think of Tony.

“Sending my deepest sympathies to his wife and son, and to everyone he loved.”

Another colleague said: “My sincere condolences to Tony’s family and friends. He was such a kind and funny man.

“He was an absolute gentleman to work with.

“He will be deeply missed by all those who had the pleasure of knowing him. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.”

A classmate wrote: “On behalf of the UCC Medical Graduates Association, I would like to express deepest sympathy to Anthony’s family at this time, and also personally as a classmate of Anthony’s. May he RIP.”

Another mourner added: “My sincere condolences to Billy and Peggy and all the extended family on the very sad passing of your son Anthony.

“My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this very difficult time. May he rest in peace.”

‘They just have a sixth sense’, fumes RTE star Jennifer Zamparelli after ‘nightmare’ 12 hours before big radio comeback

RTE star Jennifer Zamparelli’s comeback to the airwaves did not go as planned after she endured a “sleepless” night.

The Dancing With The Stars host is taking over from Dave Moore on Today FM this week – her first radio gig since she left 2FM.

But before she kicked off her first show this morning, Jen took to social media to reveal the “nightmare” she had just 12 hours before going live.

While walking along Grafton Street in Dublin, the 45-year-old lifted up a cup of coffee and said: “Cheers guys, this is absolutely needed this morning.”

The mum-of-two explained how she had “zero sleep” the night before, but claimed it wasn’t due to nerves.

The popular presenter told how her daughter, Florence, 10, and son, Enzo, six, ended up in her bed.

She laughed: “The two kids and the dog were in the bed last night, yeah, like, even the 10-year-old.”

The Irish star shook her head in disbelief and added: “They just have a sixth sense, they just know they need a full night’s sleep.

“They just f***ing know, they just know when I need.”

In her opening segment on Today FM this morning, Jen joked: “It’s not Dave Moore because he’s on his holidays. It’s me Jennifer Zamparelli in the hot seat and I’m trying my best.”

The Dublin beauty hung up her mic in May 2024 after ten years hosting her 2FM show.

Jennifer made the tough decision to leave 2FM to spend more time with her husband Lauterio and their two kids.

And after over a year off air, the 45-year-old made her radio comeback on a completely new station.

Jennifer and Brian Dowling, who recently left 98FM, are taking turns hosting Dave Moore’s Today FM this month.

RADIO RETURN

Zamparelli told fans: “He’s off on his holidays (I know the cheek) and myself and @bprdowling will take a week each and hopefully take care of Dave’s lovely listeners while he has a much deserved break!”

Now, Jennifer has described her new gig as “going over to the dark side”.

She told the Irish Independent: “But it’s going to be fine. There’s enough listeners for all of us. Everybody. We all have lovely bottoms and all that. I’m excited to go in and do that for a bit.

“And because I’ve never worked in that organisation. I’m doing seven shows in total. I can’t do any more.”

When asked if she’d ever consider taking on a full-time radio role again, Jen admitted: “Ah, listen, right now? No. I don’t think so. I don’t think I’m in that head space.”

BBC star snaps at John McEnroe in tense commentary moment after Wimbledon controversy

JOHN MCENROE and Andrew Castle fiercely debated electronic line calling following some debatable decisions at Wimbledon.

Sonay Kartal’s exit on Sunday was shrouded in controversy, after it later emerged that the Hawk Eye system, responsible for the line calls, was down for a game.

Sonay Kartal’s fourth round clash featured a moment of huge controversy[/caption]

This led to a point being replayed despite Kartal’s shot clearly landing out – ultimately costing Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova a game during the first set.

Wimbledon scrapped line judges ahead of this year’s tournament, instead fully relying on technology.

Previously, players could use the Hawk Eye system to challenge the line judges’ decisions.

Debating the issue while live on the BBC, McEnroe – renowned for his umpire bust-ups during his career – said: “I’m the perfect guy to ask.

“My hair is pretty white at this stage and I haven’t got much left, I might have a little more if it wasn’t for all of those line judges blowing those calls.

“The thing is, it needs to be right. I think they [hawk-eye] have said it’s plus or minus 3mm but is that for sure? Who’s done the testing?”

Long-time BBC commentator Castle, 61, pointed out that players had few complaints about the old challenge system, which also relied on the same tech.

McEnroe, 66, replied: “If it’s accurate I’m all for it.”

At this point, Castle interjected: “It is accurate. It’s only people that lose that say, ‘I didn’t think that was right.’

“You know, come on. Maybe on clay it’s different and maybe it’s still not perfect.”

Unconvinced, McEnroe said: “If you say so.”

Despite still beating Kartal, Pavlyuchenkova sensationally claimed that decision-makers had shown bias towards home player Kartal.

The Russian, 34, said on court: “How can you prove it? Because she is local, they can say whatever. You took the game away from me.”

In her subsequent press conference, the tour veteran added: “I expected, so maybe they call in or out. Instead they just said replay.

“I don’t know if it’s something to do because she’s local.”

Pavlyuchenkova will next face No13 seed Amanda Anisimova for a place in the semi-finals.

Hamzah Sheeraz admits to having one too many cheat meals after moving in weight despite sacrificing beloved Coca-Cola

HAMZAH SHEERAZ admits to indulging in one too many cheat meals after moving up in weight – despite giving his beloved Coca-Cola the KO.

Sheeraz – who stands 6ft 3in – somehow managed to shrink himself down to the 11st 6lb middleweight limit of 160lb for his first 22 fights.

But after drawing to WBC champion Carlos Adames in February in Saudi Arabia – the Londoner has finally moved up in weight.

He debuts at super-middleweight on Saturday against New Yorker Edgar Berlanga in the Big Apple – having enjoyed a cheat meal or two.

Sheeraz told SunSport with a laugh: “I’ve been having too many!

“Listen, 168 is good, it’s a more natural weight for me but then at the same time, it’s not just like, ‘Oh, he’s going up and it’s gonna be easy to make.’

“It’s still gonna be a little difficult, not as difficult as 160, but a little difficult. So I’ve still gotta stay disciplined and keep doing what I do.”

Sheeraz admits dieting is one of the toughest challenges boxing brings – so he cherishes the time he can spend eating what he likes.

He said: “Especially when you enjoy food, it is hard.

“But then at the same time, once I go into that mode, once you’re in that mode, there’s no taking me out of it.

Graphic comparing Edgar Berlanga and Hamzah Sheeraz's boxing stats.

“Out of camp, I’ll eat anything. My diet’s all over the place, I still train and whatnot, but when it comes to food, I’m a massive foodie.

“So out of camp, I’ll eat whatever but then as soon as I’m in camp, the flip switches.”

Sheeraz recently took his sacrifices to new heights after ditching Coca-Cola – which had been his sugary kryptonite.

He chuckled: “My substitute for it is sparkling water. It gives you the same kind of texture, same feeling, but it doesn’t do the job.

“But it’s cool, it’s cool boxing’s about sacrifices and that’s an easy sacrifice to make.”

Sheeraz – who had spent the last five years years training in Los Angeles – relocated to Ireland to link up with esteemed coach Andy Lee.

But after flying out to the New York launch press conference in May to go face to face with Berlanga – Sheeraz got one last feast.

And he just had to check out New York’s famous pizza slices for himself and reckons it could be his new favourite cheat meal.

He said: “Ever since I’ve been out here in New York, I’ve been having a pizza out here and it genuinely is different, so it’d be that.”

Sheeraz, 26, is back the city that never sleeps as he looks to put his rivalry with American hot-head Berlanga, 28, to bed.

Berlanga – who once had 16 straight first-round KOs – was beaten in a one-sided decision to Mexican legend Canelo Alvarez last September.

He has since bounced back with another first-round knock over in March and appears fired up for his hometown return to face Sheeraz.

But Sheeraz said: “Once he takes a few, once I land a few on his chin, I’m telling you, his whole demeanor will change.

“And then it’ll be an interesting fight from there because then it will turn into a lot more of a chess match than it ever was in his mind.

“But yeah, I ain’t backing down. I’m there to have a fight and I’m there to have it out.”

EastEnders star Heather Peace reveals she continued to film after cancer diagnosis because she thought she’d DIE

EASTENDERS actress Heather Peace has revealed why she decided to continue filming for her dramatic wedding scenes just hours after her cancer diagnosis.

The 50-year-old, who plays Eve Unwin on the BBC One soap, was diagnosed with breast cancer in October last year but despite her health issues, she bravely continued to film for the soap.

Her character was embroiled in dramatic scenes which included her wedding to Suki Panesar as well as being poisoned by Suki’s ex-husband Nish Panesar.

Revealing why she decided to continue working, she told Gaby Roslin on her podcast that she wanted to film the important scenes because she feared she would die.

The former Waterloo Road star expressed: “We got back to Brighton at 7 o’clock, and I was on the road at 10 past five that morning, to Elstree, to start possibly the two biggest weeks that I’ve done on EastEnders.”

Heather explained that she had told bosses about her diagnosis and was told she didn’t need to come in while she was taking in the life-changing news as well as undergoing treatment.

“I said ‘I need to come in’ because at this point I don’t know what’s going to happen,” she continued.

“And I want to finish this arc of the story. Not coming in for the next two weeks is not going to change anything, but at least let me put the full stop on a story that’s been playing out for nearly two and a half years.

“If we get to the end of that and we see them get married and we see them successful, if beyond that it’s a mess, I can leave and feel like I’ve put a full stop on something.”

The soap star went on to have chemotherapy as well as undergoing a left breast mastectomy and a reconstruction.

Just as she’s about to begin radiotherapy, Heather revealed the heartbreaking news last week that her wife Ellie has also been diagnosed with the disease.

She told the Mirror: “Her breast cancer was a smaller, aggressive lump, so she had a lumpectomy and then radiotherapy.

“Of course then I come along with my 12 cm lump, absolutely ginormous, and mastectomy, chemotherapy, just about to go into radiotherapy.

“She’s like ‘Even that you have to do bigger.’ It’s like ‘Hold my beer.'”

Last month Heather shared a video on Instagram of her at a wig fitting and captioned it with a heartfelt message.

She divulged: “This video is an important part of my recent journey, which I wanted to share with you.

“It’s been about the #TeamEffort here @bbceastenders.

“I needed a wig fitting. I’ve been on quite a road for many months now.

“I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the beginning of October.

“Since then I’ve undergone surgery and recovery over the Christmas period and today my chemotherapy journey ended.

“I woke up this morning and it was like the end of the London Marathon; I’d turned onto The Mall and could see the giant clock & the finish line.

“To conclude – I’ve just picked up my medal.”

She also took the opportunity to thank the EastEnders team for “going above and beyond” and “felt totally supported” by them.

Heather concluded her post on a positive note as she said: “I will continue to cherish and be grateful for all I am blessed with. I feel very lucky. With love, Heather xxx”

Her co-star, Kellie Bright, who plays Linda Carter on the show, was quick to comment on the post and sent warm wishes to her pal.

She gushed: “I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…. WARRIOR WOMAN!!!! Love the bones of you.”

Heather joined the long-running soap back in 2021 as Stacey Slater’s prison pal-turned-wife and has been involved in a number of huge storylines over the past four years.

Her character Eve was involved in an affair with Suki before being left for dead by Ravi Gulati and nearly killed on her wedding day on New Year’s Day.
