Legarda on Senate alignments: ‘Climate is my priority in life, not blocs’

MANILA, Philippines — Senator Loren Legarda on Monday said that Senate bloc alignments are not her priority, citing her focus on resolving climate issues affecting the country. This is what Legarda answered when asked if she is recruiting other senators to join the so-called “veterans bloc” in the 20th Congress. The newly-formed group, which was

The world’s ‘most remote island’ is 336 miles away from neighbours, has 2 languages, a volcano & home to Brits

THE world’s ‘most remote island’ is home to just 35 people, and is 336 miles away from the nearest inhabited location.

There is no airport on the island, which can only be reached by a two day boat trip.

The island was formed from a volcano[/caption]

Pitcairn, is the only inhabited part of the Pitcairn islands, which also consists of islands named Henderson, Ducie and Oeno.

The island was formed from a volcano, with the island’s main settlement, Adamstown, lying within the volcanic basin.

Population descended from British mutineers

Those who live on the island are descended from nine British HMS Bounty Mutineers and 12 Tahitian women.

The island is a British Overseas Territory, meaning that King Charles III is the monarch, despite the UK being 8,942 miles away.

Neither the King or his mother, the late Queen, have ever visited the island; however, Prince Philip stopped at the tiny settlement in 1971 whilst voyaging on the royal yacht Britannia.

Members of the community rely on making money from honey, tourism and agriculture, with the New Zealand dollar used as the main currency.

Four times a year, supply ships arrive from New Zealand, which 3,106 miles away from New Zealand from the islands.

World heritage site

In 1988, the island was, which is home to a wide variety of birds nad marine life, was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Polynesians were the first to settle on the islands, but they had abandoned them by the time Europeans arrived in the 1600s.

Portuguese sailor Pedro Fernandes de Queirós was the first European to discover the island in 1606.

It was then discovered again by a 15-year-old crew member of the British warship HMS Swallow in 1767, Robert Pitcairn, whom the islands are named after.

In 1790, nine mutineers from HMS Bounty and 17 native Tahitians set fire to the boat and settled on the islands.

The boat can still be seen underwater in Bounty Bay, and these are the settlers that today’s residents are all descended from.

They lived in isolation on the island for 20 years, until Pitcairn was discovered by American whalers in 1808.

Many have chosen to leave Pitcairn for New Zealand[/caption]

Smallest territory in the world

Soon after this, other ships arrived on the island, and brought the settlers supplies from Britain.

During this period, the population began to grow, with ships travelling between the US and Australia using the island as a port call.

Pitcairn saw a peak population of 233, but this has declined over time, with many choosing to migrate to New Zealand.

As of 2023, there were just 35 residents on the island, making it the the smallest territory in the world in terms of permanent resident population.

There are two official languages spoken in Pitcairn, English and Piktern, which is a mix of English and Tahitian.

Despite its tiny population, the island still has a church, a tennis court and a museum, which displays artefacts from the HMS Bounty.

Cruise ships often visit the island, which today is governed by Ioan Thomas, Britain’s High Commissioner to New Zealand.

Life on Pitcairn may sound peaceful, but the island’s immigration website reveals: “Life on Pitcairn will not be for everyone.

“The island’s isolation and small size at times make life on Pitcairn physically demanding and challenging.

“Residents need to be able to turn their hand to a wide range of tasks, and handle difficulties with pragmatism and creativity.”

When will the hot weather end? Temperatures to change over next few days, plus the exact date for the next 35C scorcher

AFTER days of soaring temperatures and sweltering sunshine, Brits are now asking: when will the hot weather end?

Forecasters say a shift in temperatures is on the way, with conditions set to cool slightly over the next few days – but don’t pack away the suncream just yet.

This weekend was one of the hottest days of the year so far, but when will the heatwave end?[/caption]

Another heatwave is on it’s way next weekend with highs of 35C[/caption]

The next 35C scorcher is already on the horizon – and we’ve got the exact date it’s due to hit.

After a sweltering weekend packed with barbecues, ice creams and paddling pools, Britain’s third heatwave of the year is finally on the way out.

The end of the hot weather may come as a welcome relief to many, after days of blistering sunshine triggered an amber heat health alert across large parts of the UK.

Both the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and the Met Office issued the warning for six regions from Friday through to Monday, as temperatures soared past 30C.

The amber alert signals a high risk of serious health impacts, particularly for the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions.

It also warned that NHS and care services were likely to come under increased pressure during the sweltering spell.

Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland also saw their hottest day of the year over the weekend.

But now, forecasters say the sizzling spell is set to break, with cooler air moving in and temperatures beginning to drop across much of the UK.

The Met Office predicts highs of just 23C in London and 18C in Newcastle – a noticeable dip after the 33C peak in Ross-on-Wye on Saturday.

While this current hot spell is expected to break in the coming days – despite parts of the UK topping 30C again on Sunday – weather boffins are warning it might be just a brief breather.

The Fourth Heatwave

Forecast models suggest a fourth spell of hot weather could be looming, with blistering temperatures set to return later this month.

GFS weather charts show a warming trend from July 19, with temperatures potentially soaring to 32C in the South East.

Manchester could see highs of 31C, while Birmingham may reach a scorching 32C.

In the capital, London is forecast to hit 34C, and Norfolk looks likely to bear the brunt, with temperatures peaking at a blistering 35C.

By July 20, the mercury is tipped to reach a scorching 35C, with heat maps glowing dark red as almost the entire country swelters under the blazing sun.

The fourth heatwave of the year is expected to last around three days, with forecasters predicting it could wrap up by July 21 – but not before turning the country into a furnace once again.

So, while there’s some cool relief on the way, Brits might want to keep the fans and factor 50 on standby – summer isn’t done with us yet.

How to dress in a heatwave

SUMMER is finally here with temperatures soaring this weekend, but it has been so long since we dressed for the warmer weather - what should we wear? The Sun’s fashion team is here to help with a cut-out-and-keep guide to heatwave attire.

Clemmie Fieldsend and Abby McHale reveal the ultimate dos and don’ts so that you never suffer from unsightly tan lines, sweaty patches or wardrobe malfunctions again.

Cover up
While you might be tempted to put on your skimpiest outfit when the mercury rises above 25C, it has actually been proven that staying covered up can keep you cooler.
We’re not saying wear your winter coat and wrap up. You should wear a light breathable fabric such as cotton – look for flowy midi skirts, dresses or wide leg trousers which will billow and create a nice cool breeze for you as you walk.

Prepare for extremes
With our unpredictable weather, it’s not uncommon to see either someone in hotpants with goose-pimpled legs after an unexpected downpour, or at the other end of the spectrum, someone still wearing their winter tights in 30C heat. When you’re on the fence, opt for a loose co-ord that will keep you cool but not expose you to the elements if it rains.

Wear shorts
Yes, you can wear shorts – and at any age. The key is getting the length just right and longer shorts are all the rage this year. Short shorts are of course allowed but they won’t make you any cooler. If anything, micro-shorts can make you feel hotter. Plus, they are wedgie inducing, often too tight and often show off rather too much bum cheek.

Wear white
White is not the easiest to keep clean but it is the best shade for a heatwave, and looks effortlessly chic. It doesn’t absorb light like black but instead, reflects it. It’s also a shade that never goes out of style. If you do get the odd suncream smear on your whites, quickly dab with hand soap and water, rub in with a brush and then wash as normal.

Don’t show bra straps
Whilst everyone wants to wear strappy clothing in the summer, there really is nothing classy about your bra straps being on show – especially when they’re the opposite colour to your top. Instead, if you are plumping for a strappy top, stick a strapless bra underneath.

Don’t attempt a boob tube
The boob tube has got to be one of the most faffy and unflattering pieces of clothing you can own. Yes, you will avoid shoulder strap tan lines, but you will spend the whole day pulling your top up and trying to keep your boobs in place. Come evening, you will have grubby fingerprints all over and will have no doubt experienced the odd nip slip.

Don’t choose espadrilles
Espadrille wedges were once Kate Middleton’s go-to summer shoe but they have well and truly fallen off the fashion wagon. While noughties ballet flats are back, the espadrille is yet to have its revival. It’s one of those fashion items that Gen Z won’t be seen dead in, and have even dubbed ‘the granny sandal’. For now, opt for a ballet flat or a sandal.

Don’t wear crochet
The crochet trend is nice enough and while it looks great on the likes of Love Island presenter Maya Jama, it’s simply not practical. If the sun is out, chances are, you’ll end up with tragic tan lines like a mosaic. Plus, it’s essentially knitwear – hot and itchy. For men, knitted polos have also crept into the fashion fold, masquerading as summer wear but they are made from synthetic materials and induce swear. Wear at your own risk.

Climate Change Warning

Experts say climate change is turning up the heat – quite literally – with extreme weather events like heatwaves becoming more frequent and intense.

A Met Office scientific study into the scorching Summer 2018 heatwave found that the chances of the UK experiencing a summer as hot – or hotter – than 2018 are now just over 1 in 10, and rising.

The UK smashed its all-time temperature record on July 19, 2022, when Coningsby in Lincolnshire hit a blistering 40.3C – the first time Britain had ever broken the 40-degree barrier.

That same week saw new national records set for Scotland on July 19 and Wales on July 18, underlining the growing climate crisis facing the UK.

UK summers as a whole are getting longer, hotter, and more intense.

Experts say we’re seeing more frequent heatwaves, with higher peak temperatures and longer dry spells becoming the norm.

According to the Met Office, the average summer temperature in the UK has risen by more than 1°C since the 1960s, and the number of extremely hot days is climbing every decade.

What used to be rare, once-in-a-decade scorchers are now regular occurrences, and scientists warn this trend will only accelerate unless global emissions are curbed.

How to keep cool in a heatwave

Most of us welcome hot weather, but when it's too hot, there are health risks. Here are three ways to keep cool according to the NHS...

Keep out of the heat if you can.

If you have to go outside, stay in the shade especially between 11am and 3pm, wear sunscreen, a hat and light clothes, and avoid exercise or activity that makes you hotter.

Cool yourself down.

Have cold food and drinks, avoid alcohol, caffeine and hot drinks, and have a cool shower or put cool water on your skin or clothes.

Keep your living space cool.

Close windows during the day and open them at night when the temperature outside has gone down. Electric fans can help if the temperature is below 35 degrees. Check the temperature of rooms, especially where people at higher risk live and sleep.

Toni’s furious mum hits out at Love Island star in new video – after she sneaks to the terrace with Harrison

TONI’S furious mum has hit out at the Love Island star in a new video, after she snuck onto the terrace with Harrison.

Love Island fans were completely obsessed as Toni recreated an iconic Ekin-Su moment on Sunday night’s episode.

She crawled across the terrace to speak to Harrison after the dramatic movie night twist.

Both Toni Laites and Harrison Solomon chose to recouple when they came back from Casa Amor.

After the infamous ITV2 movie night twist, Toni admitted that she felt “exposed” when a clip played where she admitted to still liking Harrison.

Now, the star’s mum has hit out in a new video, slamming Harrison.

She said: “My initial reaction to the first look is no.

“No, no, no, no, no. If I had my way, I would hire one of those little planes that has the banner at the back and have it fly over the villa and that banner would say ‘leave Harrison alone. Harrison leave Toni alone.’”

She continued: “I’m not happy about it at all. I’ll just keep praying that she can straighten her crown up and realise how much better she deserves.

“I’m with all of you out there saying ‘no Toni, no, don’t do it.’”

Toni’s glamorous mum, speaking from her home in the US, also encouraged fans to vote for her daughter.

It comes as Harrison admitted that he still had feelings for Toni behind the back of his new partner Lauren Wood.

Later on Love Island, the footballer asked Toni to meet him on the terrace.

He secretly snuck up to the balcony as he first crouched down behind the barrier to avoid being seen.

When Toni arrived, she also crouched down and was seen to have crawled to her former couple partner.

Together, the duo sat on the floor as Harrison lavished her with compliments.

He said: “Your eyes look very good tonight.”

This was before he laid on the flirt factor as he asked: “Would it be bad if I kissed you right now?”

They carried on their conversation when he asked Toni what to do about the situation.

Toni seemed determined to win him back as she declared that he should “get rid” of Lauren.

He questioned if they were back together, to which she replied: “Yes.”

Towie star rushes son to hospital and shares worrying A&E photo

FORMER Towie star Leah Wright took to Instagram last night to share a heartbreaking photo of her son lying in a hospital bed.

In the picture Christopher, 8, who has type one diabetes, can be seen comfortably dressed in loose fitting clothing with his eyes shut, laying in a white hospital bed surrounded by wires and monitors.

He has one hand resting on his stomach next to a partly drunk bottle of water, the other resting by his side wrapped in a bandage.

A brown cardboard bowl can be seen sitting on Christopher’s lap in case he might be sick.

Fortunately Christopher is now ok, with Leah, 45, adding in text over the top of the photo, “Happy Sunday all ok now though” followed by an exasperated open-mouthed emoji.

It’s been around five and a half years since Leah got an official diagnosis of Christopher’s diabetes, posting a captioned photo of her son to Instagram at the beginning of the year to commemorate the milestone.

She wrote: “5 years ago today you my precious boy was diagnosed with #typeonediabetes I’m so so proud of how far you’ve come.

“It hasn’t been easy as anyone with this illness knows. You have cried, I have cried for you. But you have given me the strength to take care of you.

“I salute all the mums and dads taking care of children with type one diabetes.”

Leah featured on the highly popular ITV show, The Only Way Is Essex, between 2011 and 2015, spanning series’ 2 and 9 as well as 11 to 14.

She first joined the show following the success of cousins Mark Wright, 38, and Jessica Wright, 39, who each featured for a number of years before Leah’s Towie debut.

Leah left the show after five on-and-off years to pursue presenting work and start her own recruitment business, ‘V Recruitment Solutions’.

Fans of the TV personality may also remember Leah featuring in the film Dracula’s Raven House back in 2018: a horror number set in London during the late 1800s.

In the past year Leah has been passionately speaking out about domestic violence, as a survivor herself, and doing what she can to raise awareness of struggles people may be facing inside the home.

Collaborating with the charity, Refuge, Leah spoke on their podcast about topics including economic abuse, feeling isolated from friends and family, and how a person being domestically abused might not at first realise it’s happening to them.

Type 1 vs type 2 diabetes

There are two main types of diabetes, which causes a person’s blood sugar level to become too high.

Type 1 diabetes is a lifelong condition where the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the cells that produce the hormone insulin.

It affects around 344,000 people in the UK.

Type 2 diabetes on the other hand is far more common, accounting for more than 90 per cent of the 4.4million adults with diabetes.

It occurs when the body doesn’t produce enough insulin, or the body’s cells don’t react to it properly.

There are no lifestyle changes you can make to lower your risk of type 1 diabetes.

But you may be at higher risk of type 2 diabetes if you are overweight or obese, eat unhealthily, have a family history of the condition, take certain medications for a long time, have high blood pressure, and have had gestational diabetes during pregnancy.

People of Asian, Black African or African Caribbean origin are also at increased risk.

‘Just one or two more flights’: Haunting words of Air India pilot at centre of ‘mental health’ probe after mum’s death

THE doomed Air India flight’s captain was considering quitting his job early to look after his elderly father, his neighbours have revealed.

The London Gatwick-bound AI 171 flight was led by Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, who was reportedly just months away from retirement.

He wanted to retire early and take care of his 92-year-old father Pushkaraj Sabharwal, who was a former official of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) – India’s aviation regulatory body.

Savitri Budhania, an elderly neighbour of Captain Sabharwal, revealed she once told him that “your father is too old to be living alone”.

To which the pilot replied: “Just one or two more flights… then I’m going to just be with Papa.”

Ms Budhania told the Times of India that Captain Sabharwal was a gentleman who would often take his father out for evening walks.

She added: “Whenever he wasn’t flying, you’d find him walking hand in hand with his father in the evening.

“They would smile at everyone, just wonderful people.

“Who knew this would be it.”

But a leading aviation expert in India told The Telegraph that Captain Sabharwal suffered from mental health issues and depression – and had taken time off in the last few years following his mum’s death.

Captain Mohan Ranganathan, a former instructor pilot of Boeing 737, said: “I have heard from several Air India pilots who told me he had some depression and mental health issues.

“He had taken time off from flying in the last three to four years.”

Although Mr Ranganathan added that Captain Sabharwal “must have been medically cleared by the company [Air India] doctors” before flying.

The Air India pilot, 56, is understood to have taken a Class I medical exam on September 5 last year.

Investigators are now said to be probing his medical records after the preliminary crash report indicated there may have been human error, although some aviation experts claim it is a case of deliberate action.

Sources said the black box analysis has so far been unable to rule out “improper, inadvertent or intentional” action that caused them to be flipped.

Families of the victims who tragically died in the crash have slammed the preliminary report as a cover-up.

They have dubbed the investigation “biased” and said it only appears to “blame the dead pilots”.

Key findings of the report:

  • Dual engine shutdown – fuel cutoff switches moved from ‘RUN’ to ‘CUTOFF’
  • Confusion between pilots – cockpit audio confirms one pilot asked ‘why did you cutoff’, the other replied ‘I didn’t’
  • RAT deployed – as seen in CCTV footage before the crash
  • Engine relight attempted – fuel switches were found returned to the “RUN” at crash site
  • 32 seconds – the time the aircraft was airborne before it crashed
  • Thrust levers mismatch – Thrust levers found at idle but black box data shows takeoff thrust was still engaged
  • Fuel test pass – fuel was clean without any contamination
  • Normal take-off set-up – Flaps and landing gear correctly configured
  • No bird activity – clear skies, good visibility, light winds
  • Pilot credentials clear – both medically fit and rested
  • No sabotage detected – although FAA alerted over a known fuel switch vulnerability not checked by Air India
  • Aircraft loading – the flight was within weight and balance limits

The Airline Pilots’ Association of India (APAI) rejected the “tone and direction” of the inquiry and said it came without sufficient evidence.

However, India’s Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu said that investigators probed in a “mature, transparent” way.

“This is a preliminary report. We want the final report to come in, so let us wait for it,” he added.

Early findings in the 15-page report released by the Indian authorities indicate switches to the engines’ fuel supplies were moved from the “RUN” position to “CUTOFF”.

The fuel switches were then toggled to the “RUN” position, and the engines appeared to be gathering power, but failed to stop the plane from decelerating.

Analysis of the cockpit voice recording revealed that one of the pilots asked: “Why did you cut off?”

To which the other pilot replied: “I didn’t.”

Though the report does not identify which comments were made by the flight’s captain and which were made by the first officer.

Nor does it “identify the cause – whether it was crew error, mechanical malfunction, or electronic failure.”

It is almost impossible to turn the switches off accidentally – they must be pulled up and locked before flipping – a safety design feature that was introduced decades ago.

Protective guards are further installed to minimise the risks – raising further questions as to why the fuel switches in the Air India flight were turned off.

The report points out that the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in 2018 issued a Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin (SAIB) – highlighting that a few Boeing 737 fuel control switches were installed with the locking feature disengaged.

But it was not deemed unsafe, and no Airworthiness Directive (AD) – a legally enforceable regulation to correct unsafe conditions in a product – was issued.

A similar switch design is used in Boeing 787-8 aircraft, including Air India’s VT-ANB Dreamliner in question.

The FAA and Boeing have now privately issued notifications that the fuel switch locks on Boeing planes are safe, according to four sources and a document seen by Reuters.

The report said Air India had said it had not carried out the FAA’s suggested inspections, as the FAA 2018 advisory was not a legal mandate.

But it also said maintenance records showed that the throttle control module, which includes the fuel switches, was replaced in 2019 and 2023 on the plane involved in the crash.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner with 242 passengers on board – including 53 Brits – smashed into a doctors’ hostel in Ahmedabad in the west of India.

The plane was headed to London Gatwick when it crashed just seconds after take-off, killing all but one passenger.

‘Easiest interview I’ve ever had’ jokes RTE GAA host after pundits go back & forth before Meath vs Donegal

PAUL Shankey and Mark McHugh haven’t lost any of their passion for their counties in retirement judging from their pre-match segment.

Prior to Donegal ultimately proving a step too far for a young Meath side, they offered an entertaining preview piece on the Croke Park surface.

Three men being interviewed on a sports field.

13 July 2025; Oisín Gallen of Donegal celebrates scoring his side's first goal the GAA Football All-Ireland Senior Championship semi-final match between Meath and Donegal at Croke Park in Dublin. Photo by Piaras Ó Mídheach/Sportsfile
Oisín Gallen’s brilliant goal helped Donegal to a 3-26 to 0-15 cruise

You get a sense of it from the above clip, however, that doesn’t even include the best part.

As 2012 All-Ireland winner McHugh thought he’d gotten in the final point/blow, the Meath All-Ireland champion quickly countered about a previous game “being a systems-based game compared to today’s”.

He then theatrically threw a clenched fist as if he’d just won a match-winning free in the 70th minute.

As presenter Damian Lawlor then threw back to Joanne Cantwell and the main punditry team pitchside, he quipped about how he’d barely had to say a word to instigate a debate between the two.

He joked: “Well, that was the easiest interview I’ve ever done! Back to you Joanne.”

Twelve months since Jim McGuinness admitted that his side ‘ran out of steam’ in their bid to reach the All-Ireland SFC final, Donegal delivered the goods as they charged towards a first showpiece since 2014 like a freight train.

In the wake of their defeat to Galway at the same stage last summer, McGuinness lamented their failure to convert nine of 14 scoring opportunities in the second half.

But having seen his team hit 3-13 after the change of ends at a packed Croke Park, there were no such complaints this time after they ruthlessly disposed of Meath’s attempt to take another major scalp.

The Royals have already tasted unlikely Championship victories over Dublin, Kerry and Galway this summer. Hopes of a first All-Ireland final appearance in 24 years were therefore high.

But Robbie Brennan’s superb first season at the helm was brought to an end in chastening fashion. Even at half-time, things looked ominous for Meath as they trailed by 0-13 to 0-8.

With a Sam Maguire decider against Kerry to come in a fortnight, Donegal could even afford to withdraw 35-year-old talisman Michael Murphy with 25 minutes still to play.

Murphy made way just moments after kicking his side into an eight-point lead. By then, the Ulster champions had also bagged the first of three second-half goals.

Donegal can now look forward to a first All-Ireland final appearance since the defeat to the Kingdom 11 years ago. McGuinness’ side played five games in 99 days to reach that stage then.

It has taken them twice as many outings in the same number of days to do it again.

Every facet of Donegal’s output was impressive here. Singling out just one of their awesome attackers would do a disservice to the others.

At the back, high standards were set by the colossal contributions of Brendan McCole and Finnbarr Roarty.

On a day when Paddy McBrearty came off the bench and kicked 0-3, McGuinness noted that the strength of his panel has been a key factor in taking Donegal a step further than in 2024.

He said: “We didn’t know at that stage the rule changes that were coming down the line and the physical demands of the rule changes, but certainly we knew that we needed people to come in and give us more depth and strengthen.

“We knew we had to be stronger and it would build its own energy within the group because it’d be more competitive and people want to play naturally, so I think we did see that today.

“We were able to make those changes the whole way through the game and going in to play Kerry in an All-Ireland final, you’re going to need every man that you’ve got.

“That’s a huge challenge and they’re so confident about what they do.

“There’s a rite of passage there almost in terms of winning All-Irelands, so that’s the first thing we’re going to have to meet head on.

“But certainly it’ll not be 15 players, it’ll be every single player that can get onto the pitch that’ll be needed.”
