Rory McIlroy and Padraig Harrington in field for Genesis Scottish Open as Shane Lowry sits out ahead of Portrush major

2023 Scottish Open champion Rory McIlroy is in the field for this week’s co-sanctioned event at Renaissance Club.

He’ll be joined by two-time Senior US Open champion Padraig Harrington as the pair gear up for the final major of the year at Royal Portrush.

The Genesis Scottish Open field is strong with most of the world’s top players in action.

World No1 Scottie Scheffler heads the pack against a field that includes the top five and eight of the top 10 players in the Official World Golf Rankings, plus 15 of the top 20 in the FedExCup standings.

The tournament is co-sanctioned between the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour – and there’s $1,530,000 up for grabs for the winner from a total purse of $9,000,000.

Last year, local favourite Robert MacIntyre went one better than his second-place finish behind Rory McIlroy in 2023. He edged out Adam Scott by a single stroke to claim victory – marking the Oban native’s second title in just two months.

However, one notable absentee this week is Shane Lowry.

The 2019 Open champion has opted to skip the Scottish Open to fine-tune his preparations for next week’s return to Royal Portrush.

World number 18 Lowry has been seen preparing at Portmarnock, Royal Portrush and Baltray in recent weeks as he looks to earn a second win at the Antrim venue.

Last weekend’s PGA Tour John Deere Classic winner Brian Campbell will also be in the field in North Berwick.

The purse in 2025 remains the same with the winner also set to take advantage of the elevated 8,000 Race to Dubai points (500 FedExCup), and 2,000 Ryder Cup points on offer.

Meanwhile, Ireland’s Conor Purcell and Seamus Power will head to Louisville, Kentucky to compete in the alternate event, the ISCO Championship.

There is a $4m prize pool this week stateside, with the champion taking home $720,000.

All the action is live on Sky Sports Golf from Thursday morning.

‘My pec, my pec’ – Grigor Dimitrov breaks down in tears after horror Wimbledon injury and forced to retire vs Sinner

CROCKED Grigor Dimitrov broke down in tears as he retired from a FIFTH successive Grand Slam after injuring himself with a serve.

The Bulgarian, 34, was two sets up against world No.1 Jannik Sinner and looking to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals for the first time since 2014.

Roger Federer watched on concerned from the Royal Box[/caption]

Yet as he closed out game four of the third set, to draw level at 2-2, with a 96mph ace, he pulled something in his right arm and shoulder.

Dimitrov collapsed to the floor in pain, clutching his right armpit and appeared to say “my pec, my pec” in reference to his pectoral muscle.

The No19 seed then went backstage for medical treatment before deciding he could not continue.

When he returned to the court to get his bags, he could barely lift his arm to shake the umpire’s hand but he received a standing ovation for his efforts.

Roger Federer, the eight-time men’s champion, looked aghast from the Royal Box as the drama unfolded in an arena where he has had so much success and joy.

It means Dimitrov’s last five appearances at the majors – twice at Wimbledon, the US Open, Australian and French Open – he has had to quit mid-match.

What makes it equally disappointing is that Sinner was there for the taking because he had hurt his elbow in set two and was on the physical brink.

Sinner, 23, fell to the ground in game six of the second set when his right foot slipped on the slippery baseline.

Instinctively, he put his right arm out to break his fall but hurt his elbow in the process of landing awkwardly.

The Italian took a medical timeout, at 3-2 to Dimitrov, and a trainer tried to massage the area around his sore elbow.

The reigning Australian and US Open champion was clearly in pain and at one point, uncharacteristically, he completely missed the ball with a swing of his racquet.

It was his good fortune that he did not have to attempt, against the pain, a five-set comeback as Dimitrov got crocked in unexpected fashion.

Sinner said: “I don’t know what to say because he’s an incredible player. We all saw this today.

“He’s been so unlucky in the past couple of years. An incredible player. A good friend of mine also. We understand each other very well off the court.

“Seeing him in this position, honestly if there would be a chance he could play the next round he would deserve it.

“But now mostly I hope he has a speedy recovery.

“Very, very unlucky from his side. I don’t take this as a win at all. This is a very unfortunate moment to witness for all of us.

“I think in the last Grand Slams he has struggled a lot with injuries. To see him now having this kind of injury it’s very, very tough.

“We all saw this with his reaction, how much he cares about the sport, he is one of the most hard-working players on Tour.

“It’s very unfortunate. Thank you for coming but this is not the end we wanted to see. It’s very sad. We wish him all the best.”

Before set three, officials decided to shut the retractable roof in anticipation of bad light.

This decision was taken at around 8.20pm – as Sinner went backstage for some rest and treatment on his sore elbow.

The call did not go down well with two-time singles champion Andy Murray, who felt there was more than an hour to go before the light really deteriorated.

Murray said on X: “So ridiculous to close the roof at this stage of the match.

“At least an hour of light left. Well over a set of tennis can still be played. It’s an outdoor tournament!”

American Brad Gilbert – a former coach of Murray, Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick – voiced his disapproval over the closure.

He said: “This is day 8 of Wimbledon and the seventh time this tournament will finish under roof. Not for rain. Because of long matches. Never seen this happen before.”

80s TV hunk, 76, looks unrecognizable as he flogs loaves at the supermarket after quitting fame to make bread

HE was an 80s TV heartthrob much-loved by the tens of millions of viewers who regularly tuned in to watch Dallas.

Now 76, the one-time sex symbol has reinvented himself with a very different career, launched with his girlfriend Linda Purl.

Patrick Duffy, best known for playing Dallas’s Bobby Ewing over 320 episodes, is the proud CEO of Duffy’s Dough and has taken to supermarkets to sell his loaves.

A new video on Instagram shows him and Linda celebrating the brand’s arrival in Kroger stores.

The couple wrote, “From our garage to this. Thank you to each and every one of you for supporting us along this journey, and to @krogerco for helping us reach so many more of you!

We are so pleased to be able to support food scarcity with 100% of our profits one loaf at a time.

The company also provides DIY dehydrated sourdough starter kits for those who want to make bread at home.

Patrick became reacquainted with old pal Linda during the coronavirus pandemic, speaking to one another via Zoom.

For their first in-person meeting once restrictions had lifted, Patrick drove 20 hours to see her, determined to see if the spark they shared remotely existed in the flesh.

It was Patrick’s first and only relationship since the death of his wife Carolyn, with whom he had two sons Padraic and Conor, in 2017.

Patrick said he truly believes his late wife would be happy he’s found himself in a new relationship and enjoying spending time with Linda.

Speaking to People last year, he opened up about finding love after a heartbreaking loss.

He said, “So when [happiness is] offered, think about it, do whatever you do, but don’t let it pass you up if it’s the right thing.

“I never thought for a minute this would happen again. I never thought I’d feel this way again.”

Linda is also well known in her own right after playing Fonzie’s girlfriend Ashley in Happy Days – a hugely successful sitcom which ran from 1974 to 1984.

Outside of the Dallas franchise, which he returned to in 2012 for three seasons of the TNT revival, Duffy is recognized for his roles in You Again, Step by Step, and The Bold and the Beautiful.

Aware he always wanted to act, he previously said: “From high school on I wanted to act, that was all I wanted to do. I wasn’t employed for years but I have been very fortunate and successful.”

Real reason Ricky Hatton is returning to ring after 13 years as bizarre Oasis link to his nasty eye injury revealed

PINT in hand, Ricky Hatton rolled with it at Friday night’s Oasis comeback as he plotted his own sensational return.

The Hitman — also a Nineties icon — was due to fly to Dubai at the weekend to announce his first professional bout for 13 years.

Yet, the man who traded blows with some of history’s greatest fighters was floored by a pair of sunglasses that he poked into his own eye.

It will go down as one of boxing’s most bizarre injuries, which saw Hatton being rushed to Manchester Royal Eye Hospital and advised not to fly by medics.

A source close to Hatton, 46, told me: “Ricky’s a massive Oasis fan. A car came to pick him up to go to their Cardiff gig, he’s got his bags, he’s rushing to get into the car and he’s tried to put his sunglasses on, but he’s poked himself in the eye.

“It punctured the protective layer of his pupil exposing the nerves and that’s where the pain comes in.

“He didn’t realise how bad it was until Saturday morning, and was rushed to hospital and given painkillers plus ointment to put on to heal it and also some artificial tears in case his eyes get too dry. He’s on the mend.”

Hatton was forced to make his comeback announcement for his December fight against the “Arabian Warrior” Eisa Al Dah, 46, over Zoom rather than in the desert emirate.

Hatton said of the bout: “It’s been well-documented I’ve had my struggles, but I’m in a really good place now, loving life, trying to bring the next champions through.

“But the opportunity has come for me to get in the ring and do it again.”

Reactions among punters on Ricky’s X post were mixed.

Wild nights

One posted: “Can’t you just go and do I’m A Celebrity or something if you need a few quid pal?”

Another revealed: “I’ll be watching Ricky, you’ve always been one of my favourite fighters.”

So why is the four-time world champion at two weights placing his battered features in the firing line once more?

In truth Hatton — like many old ring legends — has struggled to match the brutal intensity and adrenaline rush of professional boxing after hanging up his gloves in 2012.

At times appearing to lose himself, there were wild nights smashed on cocaine, marathon booze benders and the breakdown of a long-term relationship.

It was a calamitous fall for Ricky, from Hyde, Greater Manchester, who had once been top billing in Las Vegas.

Brought up on a council estate, Ricky left school to work with dad Ray as a £150-a-week carpet fitter before turning pro.

Boxing started off as a habit and it ended up giving me some money and making me a little bit of a better person. But I don’t think I will have a fight again

Ricky Hatton in 2010

I was ringside in Las Vegas in December 2007 for the night of Ricky’s life when he faced Floyd Mayweather Jr, considered one of history’s best pound-for-pound fighters.

The fight defined the Mancunian’s career — and his life in retirement.
Ahead of the fight, Mayweather had threatened Hatton by goading him: “I wish I was in prison with you. I’d make you my bitch.”

Quick-witted Ricky told me: “Having another boxer threatening to do that to me is a first.

“But I would like to think I have got a fantastic bum.”

On Ricky’s suggestion, The Sun had flown a band out to provide accompaniment to his “Walking in a Hatton Wonderland” theme tune.

It riled the Mayweather camp. At a pre-fight press conference, I conducted the band in a rendition of the tune before being carried outside by the American’s entourage including a 7ft 1in man mountain called Fonz.

At the time, Hatton was box office. Over 6,000 travelling Brits cheered him on at the MGM Grand. Over two million tuned in on pay-per-view.

Sir David Beckham visited him in his dressing room and Sir Tom Jones belted out God Save The Queen before the fight.

Hatton entered the ring to Blue Moon, the signature tune of his beloved Manchester City.

Sporting immortality beckoned. Ringside were the Hollywood glitterati, including Denzel Washington, Bruce Willis, Sylvester Stallone, Wesley Snipes, Will Ferrell, Gwen Stefani and Jude Law.

In the tenth round, Mayweather Jr unleashed a brutal left hook that sent Hatton buckling to the canvas. Ricky got to his feet but his legs were gone.

The ref should have stopped it, but Mayweather was allowed to knock him down once more before it was stopped.

I looked over at his then girlfriend, college lecturer Jennifer Dooley, who was sitting close to the action.

Before the fight she had told me: “The last thing I say to Rick before a fight is, ‘See you after for a drink’. Then I kiss him and say, ‘I love you’. It’s a very emotional moment.”

Now she was sobbing as Ricky lay prone on the canvas.

A measure of Hatton’s stature in that era was when Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt consoled him in his dressing room afterwards. It was Ricky’s first loss in 43 professional fights.

The unrelenting physical destruction at the hands of all-time boxing great Mayweather was something Hatton would struggle to emerge from.

However, in November 2008 he was back in Vegas at the MGM Grand to fight Italian-American Paulie Malignaggi.

He asked fellow Mancunians Liam and Noel Gallagher to carry his world title belts into the ring with him.

Hatton recalled: “You could see they were both a bit nervous, obviously they had never walked a fighter out before.

“They asked, ‘What do I do, Rick, what do we do?’. I said, ‘Get in the ring and hold it up and put it in Malignaggi’s face’.

“So Noel got in, then I got in the ring, then Liam got in the ring.

“Liam then came straight past me, straight past Noel, and went straight up to Malignaggi and said something like, ‘What do you think about that you d***head?’, shoving the belt in his face. I thought, ‘That’s not quite what I meant, Liam’.

“But then, Liam’s walking around ringside and Malignaggi’s fans are ringside, and Liam’s giving the old Liam Gallagher two fingers to them.

“It was absolute gold. But a couple of Malignaggi’s supporters, who were at ringside, were not people you’d want to mess with.

“They said, ‘We love you Ricky but the rock star needs to be careful, he really needs to be careful because he’s disrespected us’.

“I was thinking, ‘Liam’s going to get us all killed here’.”

Ricky won in the eleventh round.

Next up was Filipino Manny “The Pacman” Pacquiao, also judged as one of the greatest to ever pull a glove on.

Back at the MGM Grand in May 2009, the only boxer in history to win 12 world titles in eight different weight divisions, dropped Ricky twice in the first round before knocking him out in the second.

It was another savage beating for a brilliant boxer who had simply met a fighter from a different stratosphere.

‘Fire in my belly’

Ricky’s training methods saw him train relentlessly before fights then put the pounds on with a diet of takeaways and beer afterwards.
Ballooning to 13st, it lead to “Ricky Fatton” jibes.

“It’s unconventional to go out and put loads of weight on and drink beer,” he told me before the Mayweather fight. “But it works for me.”

It was a lifestyle that wouldn’t mean a lengthy career.

In 2010, aged 31, he would say: “Boxing started off as a habit and it ended up giving me some money and making me a little bit of a better person. But I don’t think I will have a fight again.

“At the moment I don’t have any fire in the belly for a fight or to get myself to a gym.”

Hatton wisely called time on his professional career with a record of 45 wins and two losses.

More importantly he still had his faculties intact.

Yet, he was plagued by black dog depression over his two ring beatings and tried to self-medicate with booze and cocaine, which left him on the brink of suicide.

In 2010, he checked into The Priory clinic, in Cheshire, after being filmed snorting cocaine during a ten-hour binge in Manchester.

I would nip in for three pints on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, then come the weekend I would have maybe eight or ten pints of Guinness on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday

Ricky Hatton

At the time Ricky said: “I have dabbled with the drug on a few sparing occasions.

“The only time I have ever done it is when I have been so depressed or drunk that it’s a case of, ‘Go on then’.”

Alcohol became a crutch with Ricky adding: “I would nip in for three pints on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, then come the weekend I would have maybe eight or ten pints of Guinness on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday.”

In November 2012 he sought solace in his beloved boxing ring. A comeback against Ukrainian Vyacheslav Senchenko, who knocked Ricky out in the ninth.

“I made my comeback for reasons other than boxing, to fight my demons,” he explained.

He once again announced his retirement.

In 2016 he split with Jennifer, the mother of his daughters Millie and Fearne, after 11 years together.

His 24-year-old son Campbell, from a previous relationship, is a professional boxer.

Single Ricky is a popular and sought-after public speaker, who has also trained and managed boxers including Tommy Fury.

In 2024, he and old friend Coronation Street star Claire Sweeney appeared on Dancing On Ice together and began dating.

It wasn’t to last with Claire saying: “We’re still friends, we were friends, we dated and now we’re friends again. It’s all good.”

Now the ring is calling once more and ageing Eisa Al Dah is no Mayweather.

Soon the cheers of “Walking in Hatton wonderland” will be ringing through the malls of Dubai, in the second great comeback of the year.

I’m cheating on girlfriend with my best mate’s little sister – but I fear I’m going to be caught out soon

DEAR DEIDRE: HAVING great sex with two different women is something most men can only dream of. I’m sleeping with my girlfriend and my friend’s little sister.

Now, I’ve got to choose who I prefer as flitting between both women, constantly covering my tracks, is hard work.

I got myself into this when my girlfriend, who’s 27, couldn’t make it to my mate’s birthday party at our local football club.

Like me, he’s 30, but on the night of the party, my girlfriend got home from her hairdressing job with a blinding migraine. She couldn’t face the party so I went alone.

I’d never met my friend’s sister who is 24. She was attractive and confident and threw her arms around me, saying she’d, “heard all about me”.

She then walked me to the bar — where we stayed all evening — until she told me she wanted some air. I walked her outside and she kissed me.

I know it was wrong but I enjoyed it so much and couldn’t resist when she invited me back to hers after the party.

We’ve been meeting for regular sex since. But she’s very manipulative and is putting pressure on me to break up with my girlfriend.

I’m still having sex with my girlfriend but climaxing quicker because I’m thinking of my younger lover.

I get butterflies in my stomach when a text comes through.

My best mate is sound — he’d never say anything to my girlfriend but he’s saying I’m going to get caught out soon if I’m not careful.

And more importantly for him, that I’m messing his baby sister about and I need to sort myself out.

Felix's fertility fixation is getting out of hand

DEIDRE SAYS: You do. Cheating isn’t fair but you know that. Maybe you need a break from both women to think this through.

If you see a future with your girlfriend but your mate’s sister is all about the sex, then it is only fair that you end things with your lover and tell her that casual sex isn’t your style.

Have a good think about your relationship and your own state of mind – be honest with yourself about why you strayed. If you know you’re not ready to settle down, now’s the time to be honest.

Hurting at least one of these women is inevitable. If you decide you want your girlfriend but there’s a chance she’ll find out, you’ll have to confess and beg her forgiveness.

SCARED TO TELL PARENTS I’VE QUIT

DEAR DEIDRE: I TRAINED to be a teacher but I’m going to let my family down when I tell them I’m quitting the profession.

I’ve got a friend who manages a restaurant for a chain. The money is good and they have a great training scheme. She told me to apply to work in a sister restaurant because their assistant manager was leaving, so I sent off my CV, had an interview and I got the job.

I’m really looking forward to starting this summer.

I’ve gone off teaching because there seems to be less time in the classroom and more doing mountains of paperwork. I hate it.

I’m a 24-year-old man and the only one in my family to get some good qualifications.

I’m worried about my parents’ reaction.

DEIDRE SAYS: Most parents have a dream of their children having successful careers – but it’s not their life.

The important thing is you settle into a career which makes you happy. Your teaching degree will never be wasted.

Go for the new job and see how you get on. If this is more you, then great but if not, you can always go back to teaching or even something different in the education field.

My support pack called Standing Up For Yourself will help you to talk with your family, but remember, how you want to live your life is up to you.

TELLING NEW BLOKE HE IS BAD IN BED WAS BAD IDEA

DEAR DEIDRE: I THINK I’ve ruined my relationship by informing my gorgeous hunk of a boyfriend that he’s no good in bed.

I didn’t put it quite like that, of course, but I explained what I didn’t like and what to try instead. He didn’t like me telling him what to do at all.

I’m 28 and I’ve had other sexual partners who haven’t hit the spot so I’ve told them and they’ve been fine with it, but this guy had the opposite reaction.

He’s very good-looking and he’s been out with plenty of women before. I was surprised that he seemed sexually inexperienced with women.

DEIDRE SAYS: If his ego is that inflated then I’d suggest he might not be the man for you.

But he may not have ever been told he’s not hitting the mark and it’s great that you said something.

If you’re still together, find a quiet moment to talk to him about the sex side of things. Choose a time when you’re not in bed.

Explain that you didn’t mean to upset him but thought it would be better for him to know what works for you. Talking openly about sex will bring you closer.

Rather than saying, “Don’t do that”, say something along the lines of, “I love to be touched there” and guide his hands. My support pack called Understanding Female Pleasure explains more.

HOW DO I SHARE THAT MUM’S GAY?

DEAR DEIDRE: THE thought of telling my boyfriend that my mum is gay is really stressing me out.

I’m a girl of 19 and Mum is 50. Her partner is 48 and lives with us.

They’ve been together since my mum split up with dad five years ago.

I wasn’t happy at the time but my friends were all great about it, so I’ve learnt to live with it.

My boyfriend’s parents are much older. While he is 22, his father is 70 and his mum is 61.

They have very old-fashioned views about same-sex relationships –

I’ve heard them when gay people kiss one another on the telly.

My boyfriend seems to be a “live-and-let-live” sort of guy but we’ve only known one another for five months.

Every time he’s been over to my house, it’s when my mum is away because she visits my nan a lot.

He’s asked about my parents and I tell him they are divorced – but it’s never come up in conversation that Mum now lives with a woman. I’m worried he may have the same views as his parents and he’ll move on when he finds out.

DEIDRE SAYS: When he finds out, or you tell him, you’ll know whether this guy is right for you.

You haven’t lied to him but the longer you ignore this, the bigger the issue will become.

Simply choose a quiet time to share this information.

There’s a very good chance he doesn’t agree with his parents’ views from what you’ve said about his personality, and his parents don’t get a vote about your family dynamics.

You can find additional emotional support through FFLAG, a charity supporting friends and family of lesbians, gays or bisexuals – fflag.org.uk, 0300 688 0368 – where you can talk with somebody who understands how things are for you.

Desperate Mick Michaelis will go on the run from prison in an attempt to reunite with his kids.

The abuser – who is played by actor Joe Layton in the ITV soap – has been locked up awaiting trial for killing PC Craig Tinker.

And after getting news that his family are falling apart, the dramatic episode on Monday July 14 follows Mick as he orchestrates a prison break and plans to do a runner with Brody, Joanie and Shanice.

With the desperate killer having little to lose, he poses a danger to anyone who gets in his way.

His first port of call is Weatherfield High but when he realises that his daughter Joanie has been taken home from school by Sally he heads for the cobbles.

As Sally offers Joanie a tour of Underworld, while the factory girls are at the pub, she has no idea that Mick has arrived on the street, closely followed by Kit who is determined to stop him.

What has Mick got planned and will Kit be able to stop him?

Joe Layton said: “He isn’t after revenge, this is about him wanting to get his family together and start a new life with them.

“The anger that we saw when he killed Craig has been replaced by desperation and love for his family, but that doesn’t make him any less dangerous.

“Kit is potentially putting his life on the line once more in his attempts to stop Mick.”

The Go Compare ads singer, 53, has also pledged a “fabulous warm welcome” at the “Welsh House by Wynne” in Carmarthen, West Wales.

His business venture comes after he split with fiancée Liz Brookes.

A source said: “They’ve decided to have temporary voluntary time apart.

“He’s opening a restaurant focusing on Welsh food to distract from the Liz separation.

“He paid the Welsh House to take over their existing space.

“It’s a prime location in the centre of Carmarthen.

“He is trying to capitalise on his MasterChef win apparently.”

Announcing his restaurant plan on social media, he said: “Hello, Wynne here.

“This is my hometown of Carmarthen.

“It is ever-changing and one thing that is changing is the Welsh House.

“It’s going to become the Welsh House by Wynne.

“I promise you it will have MasterChef dishes on the menu, it’s going to have a fabulous warm welcome and I want you to come and see me, OK?

“It’s going to be the home of the radio show too.

“So I’ll see you soon. I’d better get cooking.”

Wynne started his own radio show following his BBC axing for making a crude remark on the Strictly Live Tour launch event.

He was dropped from the tour and his BBC Wales radio show was canned.

Bosses then axed his travelogue with pal Joanna Page, All At Sea, after just one season.

Wynne was also embroiled in a “gropegate” scandal when he appeared to place an unsolicited hand on the stomach of pro partner Katya Jones in last year’s Strictly.

He proposed to company boss Liz in Morocco earlier this year.

He was previously married to wife of seven years, Tanwen, with whom he has two kids.

His rep was approached for comment.
