Shelbourne should prevail against Linfield as League of Ireland remains light years ahead of NIFL

THEY boast both the biggest stadium and largest trophy haul on either side of the border.

But Linfield’s claim to be the biggest club on the island needs more than just bricks and mortar and past glories to sustain it.

And David Healy’s side will have their work cut out against Shelbourne to prove that their status as the seeded team in the tie is an accurate reflection of their standing.

Certainly, Healy was none too pleased with the draw even if it minimised the travel involved for their Champions League qualifier.

The former Northern Ireland striker said: “Out of the possibles that we could have got, personally I think it’s the toughest.

“I would imagine Shelbourne, being the unseeded team, may be quite happy with the draw. The plan is to be in the tie when we get to Windsor Park the week after. It’s a tough test.”

That is despite the fact that Shels are the competition’s third-lowest ranked team, ahead of only clubs from San Marino and Albania, on account of last year being their first appearance in Europe in 18 years.

But, even though their talismanic title-winning gaffer Damien Duff stepped down little more than a fortnight ago, and the fact that they are lying sixth in the table, they still look better equipped for a lucrative All-Ireland clash than their opponents.

Ahead of tomorrow’s first leg at Tolka Park, the Reds have 25 league games under their belt.

Healy was speaking after his side had been beaten on penalties by Dungannon Swifts in the Charity Shield on Friday.

It was only their second game since returning to pre-season training 3½ weeks ago, the other being a 4-0 win over Haverfordwest County from the Welsh top tier.

As preparation goes for a tie with so much prize money at stake, it is hardly ideal. Each club is guaranteed €960,000 just for participating in the tie.

Winning it is worth an additional €750,000, while overcoming Qarabag in the next round would secure at least another €2.12m as it would copper-fasten group-stage football in one of Uefa’s three competitions.

Given what is on the line, it was curious to hear Healy suggest that their analysis of Shels was only going to begin after the curtain-raiser against Dungannon was out of the way.

It is hard to believe that, for all the turmoil at Tolka Park because of Duff’s departure and his replacement by his assistant Joey O’Brien, Shels would have started looking at Linfield only over the weekend.

And, as much as Duff used to rail against what he perceived as the lack of an elite mindset amongst some in the League of Ireland, it is hard to escape the conclusion that it is light years ahead of the NIFL.

This season is the first in which all ten top-flight clubs here are full-time, compared to just four — Linfield, Larne, Glentoran and Coleraine — in the NIFL, although Cliftonville are heading in that direction.

Stephen Baxter achieved considerable success with Crusaders before stepping down last year but, more than once, he missed European games because he was on holiday. So too did players at his and other clubs.

That would simply be unthinkable in the League of Ireland.

Remember the backlash against Bohemians boss Alan Reynolds after he teamed up with the Ireland Under-21 squad during an international break last year?

For any manager here to skip their side’s most lucrative two matches of the year — the dates for which were known well in advance — to lie on a beach simply would not be tolerated.

EUROPEAN RECORDS

It presumably helps to explain why NIFL clubs have not matched the exploits of their League of Ireland counterparts when it comes to European results.

Shamrock Rovers have qualified for the group stages on three occasions, Dundalk twice with Larne’s appearance in the Conference League — in which they were well beaten by the Hoops — last season a first for a club from north of the border.

Linfield should have beaten them to it in 2022 but if you look for a dictionary definition of shooting oneself in the foot you might find yourself reading the details of their tie against RFS.

They were 2-0 up in Latvia with two minutes to go but drew 2-2. They took the lead in extra-time in the second leg but conceded an own goal in stoppage time and then lost a penalty shootout.

That might have gone some way to helping them to deal with the challenge of being a members club competing against rivals who have attracted considerable outside investment, although they wrested the league title back from Larne with relative ease.

But their budget is smaller than Shels and indeed many other Premier Division clubs. Their average league attendance of 2,713 would be the third lowest here, ahead of only Waterford and Drogheda United.

Only once in three attempts -—against Shamrock Rovers, on away goals, in 1984 — have they prevailed against a League of Ireland club.

For all that, they will pose a threat to Shels who, on Friday, won a game by more than a one-goal margin for the first time since the opening night of the season.

Healy’s first experience of European football was losing a cross-border tie, against Cork City, nine years ago.

As O’Brien strives to prove he is the right man to replace Duff, he could do without experiencing a similar fate.

The singer, who first shot to fame on ITV’s Pop Idol in 2002, will be joined by a cast of “ripped and ridiculously talented performers for the ultimate throwback concert”.

Promoters promise it’ll be a night when there’s “so much going on, and coming off”.

They say: “With nothing but harmonies, dance moves, and a whole lot of skin, the boys belt out the biggest hits of the 90s and 00s, from Backstreet Boys to NSYNC, Blue to Take That, in a show that’s as nostalgic as it is naughty.”

In an Instagram post, Gareth told fans: “I cannot wait to join the cast of Boyband in the Buff! Touring the whole of the UK throughout 2026. Click the link in my bio for the tour list.

“But be quick… the closer you are to the front, the better view you’ll have. More dates to be announced soon.”

The show is set to visit more than 25 locations across the country, including Felixstowe, Tunbridge Wells, Stevenage, Aldershot, Clacton-on-Sea and Worcester.

Gareth became a household name after reaching a respectable second place in the first series of Pop Idol.

Since then, he has continued to tour the UK, with the star fronting a tribute show to Franki Valli and The Four Seasons last year.

Sharing his excitement to be stepping into their shoes, he told The Sun last year: “It’s a concert that we want people up at the end, singing along, dancing, having a great night out.

“My parents always used to listen to them so it’s been drummed into me as a child.

“And then I’ve done a few shows in the past, which has been based around the music, so to produce my own version of the show is great.”

Met Eireann 25C forecast TODAY before boiling 30C weekend blast amid ‘hot weather could last into next week’ verdict

TEMPERATURES could soar to a boiling 30C in some parts of the country this weekend.

A heatwave is set to blast Ireland in the coming days and weather boffins have confirmed the sunshine and heat could “continue into next week”.

Ireland's 6-hour maximum temperature forecast.
Donegal Weather Channel/ Facebook
Temperatures will hit 30C over the weekend[/caption]

Meteologix
The south will see the best of 25C conditions today[/caption]

Temperatures across the country will hit 25C today but will still be mixed in with some cloud, rain and drizzle.

However, it will brighten up as the day continues “with spells of sunshine” developing.

It will remain cloudy in Ulster but Met Eireann revealed the south will soak up the best of the weather today.

Alan O’Reilly of Carlow Weather explained: “A cloudy start with some patchy light showers but sunny spells will move into the West and then slowly extend across the country as a fine spell of weather arrives.”

Tonight it will be mostly dry and cloudy with some drizzle and temperatures of around 10C.

Good conditions will get underway properly from tomorrow in a mostly dry 24C day.

Met Eireann said: “Mostly dry on Wednesday, apart from isolated light showers across western and northern areas.

“Generally cloudy to start before warm sunshine breaks through across east and southeast areas through the afternoon and evening.

“Highest temperatures of 17C to 24C, in just light westerly breezes.”

Overnight temperatures on Wednesday will remain mild, sitting at 15C.

And looking ahead to the coming days weather experts have promised a “real improvement” from Wednesday onwards.

Kenneth McDonagh Donegal Weather Channel said: “Temperatures set to rise to 30C by the weekend.

“The deeper we get into this week the warmer it will get with every passing day with a real improvement from Wednesday and temperatures into the high 20s even low 30s by the weekend.

“The weekend is now looking very warm and hot.

“There are also signs that the warm and hot spell could continue into next week also.”

‘WELL ABOVE AVERAGE TEMPERATURES’

And Cathal Nolan of Ireland’s Weather Channel had the same outlook.

He said: “A period of hot conditions commencing as early as Wednesday in some parts, though more widely from Thursday through until Monday.

“During this period a blocking high over Scandinavia and a steering low situated to our west will feed in a hot continental airmass leading to well above average temperatures with values pushing close to 30C in some areas on Friday and again through the weekend.”

Thursday will see a dry day with temperatures hitting 26C alongside “warm spells of sunshine”.

Even overnight temperatures still not below 11C to 14C, although some fog will form.

‘HOT IN SUNSHINE’

And Met Eireann have a positive weekend outlook to match expert commentary.

For Friday bosses said: “After a foggy start for southern areas, widespread sunshine will likely develop.

“Becoming hot in sunshine with highest temperatures of 22C to 27C or 28C, all in light southerly breezes.”

And looking to Saturday Met Eireann promised a “very warm or hot day with widespread sunshine”.

Temperatures on Saturday expected to hit the 28C mark at least.

You need to stop letting your dog drink out of pub bowls – vet nurse issues warning that ‘could cost you thousands’

A VET nurse has issued a stern warning to all dog owners – and if you don’t listen, it could end up costing you thousands of pounds.

Jade, a Registered Veterinary Nurse from the UK who has three dogs and three tortoises, has revealed why animal lovers should never let dogs drink from communal water bowls.

She claimed that such water bowls can spread parasites like Roundworm, Tapeworm, Giardia and Lungworm[/caption]

So if you’ve got a furry friend and want to ensure they are kept safe and also save yourself having to spend time going back and forth to the vets, then you’ve come to the right place and will need to listen up.

Posting on social media, Jade, who previously revealed the five ‘high-maintenance’ dog breeds she would never own, explained why dog owners should avoid letting their pets drink from communal water bowls that have been left outside, whether that’s outside a person’s house, the shops, at a dog park or even in a pub garden.

Sharing the dangers of such communal dog bowls, Jade explained: “Whilst these bowls are put out with good intentions, they can often be a source of contamination – they can risk spreading infectious diseases through multiple dogs drinking out of them and I don’t recommend that anyone lets their dogs drink out of these communal bowls, nor do I recommend that you actually put them outside of your houses or shops or at the dog park.

“The thing with these dog bowls is that you don’t know how long that water’s been sat there, you don’t know if it’s fresh, if it’s stagnant, you don’t know when the last time that bowl was cleaned or what it was cleaned with and you don’t know what other animals have been drinking out of it because don’t forget, wildlife can drink out of these bowls as well.”

Jade then acknowledged that such dog bowls could leave you with extremely costly vet bills, as she added: “So, the thing with these bowls is that they can spread parasites like Roundworm, Tapeworm, Giardia and Lungworm, because again, you’re going to get slugs that come up and they’re gonna go all around the edge of those bowls, which can be a great way to transmit Lungworm

“They can also transmit infectious diseases such as Leptospirosis, Kennel Cough, Canine Papillomavirus and they can also be a reservoir for bacteria to grow such as Salmonella and E. Coli that can really upset your dog’s tummy.”

While vet bills can vary massively around the UK, such issues can cost anywhere from £15 to £1,000 for treatment.

Leptospirosis in particular can be incredibly costly, with hospitalisation and treatment costing dog owners up to £1,300.

Meanwhile, Lungworm can cost over £200 for treatment, plus £100 for consultation and monitoring, while Canine Papillomavirus, a viral infection that causes benign, wart-like growths, can cost owners up to £400, which includes surgical or topical removal.

Subsequently, Jade stressed that she “strongly advises” all dog owners to “not let your dogs drink out of these water bowls.”

Instead, she advised: “If you want to take some water with you, great, take a travel bowl and a bottle of water and just stop occasionally to give your dog a drink, but please do not let your dogs drink out of these communal water bowls.”

The TikTok clip, which was posted under the username @jade.the.vet.nurs, has clearly left many open-mouthed, as it has quickly racked up 60,000 views.

Totally agree, I never allow my dogs to drink out of these bowls

Not only this, but it’s also amassed 1,575 likes, 156 comments and 1,094 shares.

Social media users were thankful for Jade’s advice and many dog owners flocked to the comments to agree with her.

More summer risks to dogs

EXPERTS are warning pet owners to be vigilant when it comes to taking their dogs out this summer - especially when it comes to taking them to the beach.

Dr Rebecca MacMillan says it is important that dog parents are well prepped to ensure a safe trip away with their dog.

From consumption of salt water, to open holes, the Gloucestershire-based vet says there are hidden hazards to look out for.

Angela Laws, who is head of community at British pet-sitting platform TrustHousesitters, also urges pet owners to “prioritise safety” and to “be aware of potential hazards.”

Preventing injuries

Large holes can be hidden amongst the sand, which can cause injury if your dog trips or falls into it.

Dr Rebecca is warning pet owners, as if you are playing fetch with them, your dog might not be “expecting a hole” as they are running, which can cause them to fall and injure themselves.

Talking to the Femail, Dr Rebecca also wanted to be mindful of other beach-going pets if you and your dog choose to dig a hole and to fill it back up before heading off.

Food for thought

Although you would never dream of drinking the water from the sea, your pets may view it as a large bowl of water for them.

However, seawater consumption is extremely dangerous for your dogs according to Dr Rebecca.

Drinking saltwater can disrupt the “balance of electrolyte in the body and cause dehydration,” according to Rebecca.

This is also the case for sand as too much sand can cause a painful obstruction, “which may require surgery.”

Check the temperature

Just like humans, pets can get heat stroke too.

It is most likely to occur when the body’s temperature rises above 36C and hits 40C.

Dr Rebbeca suggests caution when the weather outside hits 25C, and especially if it’s over 27C.

She also warned pet owners to do their research on the type of breed of their dog, as some will be much more “prone to heatstroke.”

Dr Rebecca says these dogs include flat-faced dogs like pugs and bulldogs, and large breeds with thick coats.

She urges dog parents to make sure their pet is well hydrated, try to keep them in the shade and remember to be aware of their paws burning on the ground.

Digging dangers

Dr Rebecca there could be anything from discarded BBQ’s with hot coals, to broken glass or sharp objects.

She said: “If your pooch is prone to digging, make sure you’re nearby in case of any unexpected finds.”

One person said: “I always take a collapsible dog bowl, never ever take that risk.”

Another added: “Totally agree, I never allow my dogs to drink out of these bowls.”

A third commented: “ALWAYS take water with you when walking your dog.

“The amount of people I see walking their dog/s and having no water with them. My dog has winter and summer water bottles.”

Kate & William to roll out red carpet for Macron with Windsor carriage ride today – as King will deliver landmark speech

PRINCESS Kate and Prince William will roll out the red carpet for Emmanuel Macron and a Windsor carriage ride today.

The French president, and his wife Brigitte, are set to be greeted by the Prince and Princess of Wales at RAF Northolt this morning.

The Prince and Princess of Wales will join the King and Queen on their carriage ride to Windsor Castle[/caption]

Kate, who has opened up about the “difficult phase post-treatment” after her cancer diagnosis, will be carrying out her royal duties as part of a “gradual return”.

Kensington Palace has yet to confirm whether or not the princess will attend the banquet in Windsor Castle’s St George’s Hall in the evening.

It comes as Kate has “to find the right balance” on returning to full time duty.

Macron will then be welcomed by King Charles and Queen Camilla in Windsor ahead of a landmark speech.

A carriage procession with the royals to Windsor Castle will unfold through High Street and up the Long Walk, with roads along the route set to close from 8.45am.

Security was heightened with an enhanced police presence and teams inspecting the area around the castle and checking locations such as flower planters.

The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead said: “We are working closely with Thames Valley Police, the Crown Estate and other key partners, to minimise disruption to those that live and work in, or plan to visit Windsor”.

This afternoon a ceremonial welcome will take place at the castle, and inspection of the Guard of Honour.

The French president will then have lunch with the Royal Family, ahead of wreath laying at West Minister Abbey.

This is to honour the Grave of the Unknown Warrior, before Macron will deliver an address to Parliamentarians in the Royal Gallery at the Palace of Westminster.

The leader will later greet Kemi Badenoch and Sir Ed Davey at Lancaster House.

The Monarch is then set to hold a state banquet where he will hail the relationship between France and the UK in the face of a “multitude of complex threats”.

Mr Macron’s state visit to the UK, from July 8 to 10, is the first to be hosted at Windsor Castle, rather than Buckingham Palace, in a more than a decade.

It is also the first French state visit to the UK in 17 years since that of the now disgraced former French president Nicolas Sarkozy in 2008.

In a personal touch, the King and Queen will, tomorrow show the Macrons Fabuleu de Maucour.

The 10-year-old grey gelding was gifted by Mr Macron to known horse-lover, late Queen Elizabeth II in 2022.

Fabuleu de Maucour belonged to the largely ceremonial French Republican Guard and was trained to carry the standard-bearer.

They will also view a Charabanc carriage from the Royal Mews, which was a present to Queen Victoria from King Louis-Philippe of France in 1844.

And the Macrons will privately pay their respects at the late Queen’s tomb in St George’s Chapel by laying flowers in tribute.

Charles will later give the president a tour of the Windsor Castle Gardens.

And, the arrangements for this state visit are likely to form the template for US President Donald Trump’s high-profile visit in September.

Downing Street said on Monday the UK’s relationship with France was “key” to dealing with boat crossings, following reports French police officers had used knives to puncture a boat off the coast.

This comes after Princess Kate opened up about her post-treatment journey last week.

The Princess visited RHS Wellbeing Garden at Colchester Hospital, in Essex.

She met with NHS workers and planted some of her ‘Catherine’s Rose’ plants in the recovery garden.

Kate spoke about life after cancer treatment, and told staff: “You know I think there’s a lot of brave faced stoicism through treatment, but then treatment’s done.

“I think the phase afterwards is really difficult, I mean, you know, you’re not necessarily in a clinical team any longer, but you’re not able to function normally at home as you once used to.

“And actually, someone to help talk you through that, show you and guide you through that phase that comes after treatment, I think it’s really valuable to have a space like this here for patients.”

She added: “But it’s life changing for anyone, through first diagnosis or post treatment and things like that, it is life changing experience both for the patient but also for the families as well.

“And actually it sometimes goes unrecognised, you don’t necessarily, particularly when it’s the first time, appreciate how much impact it is going to have.

“You have to find your new normal and that takes time…and it’s a roller coaster it’s not one smooth plain, which you expect it to be.

“But the reality is it’s not, you go through hard times and to have a place like this to have the support network, through creativity and singing or gardening whatever it might be is so valuable and it’s great this community has it, it would be great if lots of communities had this kind of support.”

Kate announced her cancer diagnosis in March 2024 after abdominal surgery at The London Clinic in January that year.

She finished chemotherapy in September and announced she was in remission in January of this year.

‘So ridiculous’ – Andy Murray blasts Wimbledon chiefs over controversial decision during Sinner vs Dimitrov

ANDY MURRAY blasted Wimbledon chiefs for their controversial decision midway through Jannik Sinner’s thriller with Grigor Dimitrov.

The British legend, 38, was left baffled and angered as SW19 bosses halted the match for 13 minutes at around 8.30pm to close the roof on Centre Court with the Bulgarian holding a shock two sets to love lead over the world No1.

Murray branded the decision “so ridiculous” as the two players and millions of fans worldwide twiddled their thumbs and waited.

The two-time Wimbledon champion passed the time with an exasperated post on X.

Murray wrote: “So ridiculous to close the roof at this stage of the match.

“At least an hour of light left… well over a set of tennis can still be played… it’s an outdoor tournament!”

Wimbledon bosses may have been fearing a Sinner comeback as the Italian began to find his groove.

Perhaps expecting the match to go well beyond three sets, they made the call to pull the roof over before the sun set over SW19 at 9.17pm.

But, just minutes later, 34-year-old Dimitrov – chasing his first Wimbledon quarter-finals place in 11 years – was left in tears as he suffered a nasty pectoral injury.

The sickening scenes came as he closed out game four of the third set.

Dimitrov drew level at 2-2 after firing down a well-placed 96mph ace.

But he immediately collapsed to the floor in pain, clutching his right armpit and appeared to say “my pec, my pec”.

The No19 seed then went off the court for medical treatment before deciding he could not continue.

When he tearfully emerged back on court to get his bags, he could barely lift his arm to shake the umpire’s hand.

Dimitrov received a standing ovation for his efforts and Roger Federer, the eight-time men’s champion, looked aghast from the Royal Box

It means Dimitrov’s last five appearances at Grand Slams – twice at Wimbledon, the US Open, Australian and French Open – he has had to quit mid-match and takes his tally in majors to ten overall in his career.
