The five Amazon Prime Day gadget deals I’d actually buy – and ‘lowest ever’ price on Ring doorbell bundle is my top pick

Collage of tech products and a man.

AMAZON Prime Day is here and the online shop is flooded with seemingly endless deals – with plenty of cut-price gadgets on offer.

If you’re struggling to know where to start, don’t worry. I’m The Sun’s tech editor, Sean Keach, and I’ve been testing tech as part of my job for more than a decade. And there are five Prime Day discounts that I’d actually buy.

Smartphone displaying a Ring doorbell video feed of a family and their dog approaching the front door.
Amazon / Ring
The Ring battery doorbell doesn’t need any wires to work[/caption]
Ring Video Doorbell 2 with charging dock.
Amazon / Ring
This bundle includes a Chime so you can hear the doorbell chime – rather than relying on just phone notifications[/caption]

There’s something for everyone, and they’re all priced at well under £100.

The only catch: you’ll need an active Amazon Prime membership to snap up these Prime Day deals.

On top of that, Prime Day is a limited-time event and (confusingly, despite the name) lasts from Tuesday, July 8 until Friday, July 11.

Here are my top picks…

Tech Deal #1 – Ring Battery Video Doorbell + Chime

Now £59.99 (was £129.98)

Top of my list is a frankly unmissable deal on the Ring Battery Video Doorbell.

This is a rechargeable doorbell (that means no wires) that lets you see who’s at the door via a smartphone app, answer it from anywhere in the world, and keep an eye on your home.

It even has night colour night vision, and an “out of office” feature called Quick Replies.

But it’s also bundled with a Chime, which plugs into the mains and serves as a speaker for your doorbell chime. Otherwise you’re just relying on smartphone notifications.

This is a top deal that saves you just shy of £70.

And it’s the lowest price ever for the bundle too, according to Amazon product tracker CamelCamelCamel.

I recently tested the slightly more expensive Plus version of this gadget (with marginally higher resolution and a quick-release battery) and loved it – check out my Ring Battery Video Doorbell Plus review.

Tech Deal #2 – Apple AirTag 4-pack

iPhone screen showing AirTag location and AirTag attached to keys.
Amazon / Apple
Apple AirTags can be attached to almost anything, letting you track them on a virtual map[/caption]

Now £84 (was £119)

Next up is this four-pack bundle of Apple AirTags.

The AirTags are little tracker tags that you can stick in a backpack or purse, attach to keys or a bike, or tie on to your luggage.

You can then monitor their location through the Find My app on your iPhone.

Four Apple AirTags.
Amazon / Apple
This bundle gets you four Apple AirTags[/caption]

They also let you ‘ping’ them to make a beeping noise if you can’t physically find them.

It’s a great way to get peace of mind with your beloved gadgets. I put them on almost everything – in my bag, on my suitcases, and even in my car.

A single AirTag from Apple costs £35, so the full £119 price is already a saving on the £140 you’d pay for four individually.

But at £84, it means you’re paying just £21 per AirTag, which is a very good price.

Tech Deal #3 – Anker MagGo Power Bank

Smartphone charging on a wireless charger, 75% charged.
Amazon / Anker
The MagGo Power Bank is one of Anker’s best wireless charging bricks[/caption]

Now £54.99 (was £89.99)

Charging our phones is something most of us do every single day.

But you’re not always by a plug socket – especially in summer when you’ll be out and about.

Last year I tested out the Anker MagGo Power Bank, and it’s easily one of my favourite charging gadgets of all time.

It’s a wireless charging pack, which means you can slap your iPhone on top and it’ll power up.

Wireless PowerIQ charger at 100% battery.
Amazon / Anker
It has a built-in screen to show you important charging stats[/caption]

The 10,000mAh capacity means it’ll charge up an iPhone multiple times over – at least two or three.

And it has a kickstand at the back so you can have your phone on display either vertically or horizontally.

If you spin your iPhone into horizontal mode, it unlocks StandBy mode, which turns your mobile into a desk or bedside table clock too.

And there’s a built-in screen that shows the pack’s battery level, the time it’ll take to recharge, and how much longer you’ll be able to use the pack for.

This is £35 off, which is nothing to sniff at. A must-buy for the power-hungry!

Tech Deal #4 – Withings Body Smart Scale

Smart scale showing muscle mass and connected app displaying body composition data.
Amazon / Withings
I loved using the Withings Body Smart Scale for weight loss – but it also works great for other health goals too, like gaining muscle[/caption]

Now £69.95 (was £89.95)

Last year, I was able to lose about four stone with the help of three weight loss support gadgets.

One of them was a Withings Body Smart Scale, and it’s hard to imagine living without it.

It works like a regular scale, tracking your weight in the unit of your choice.

But it also uploads it to the Withings app (and then syncs that into Apple Health too), so you can log your weight without lifting a finger.

Illustration of smart scale displaying body fat and heart rate data.
Amazon / Withings
You can even monitor your heart rate and visceral fat (the belly fat around your organs that you can’t see)[/caption]

Also, it can tell who’s standing on the scale, so my wife can hop on too and our measurements won’t get confused.

That’s not all: the scale also tracks your body composition, detailing your exact body fat percentage.

This is useful, as it’s a more specific way of measuring how much of you is actually fat – something your generic weight can’t really show.

This gadget is normally £89.95, but it’s now a steal at £69.95.

Tech Deal #5 – Backbone One Mobile Gaming Controller

Smartphone in a gaming controller playing Fortnite and other games.
Amazon / Backbone
Backbone’s controller surrounds your iPhone, turning it into a powerful portable console[/caption]

Now £59.99 (was £99.99)

Consoles are expensive – and in the case of the new Nintendo Switch 2 (which is selling like hotcakes) hard to even buy.

The good news is that you already have a posh console: it’s the smartphone in your pocket.

And you can get that console feeling with the Backbone One Mobile Gaming controller.

This attaches to your iPhone and adds a controller element, effectively making it function as a handheld console.

Person playing games on Backbone App.
Amazon / Backbone
You can play console-grade games with your phone while on the move[/caption]

The one I’ve linked here is the Lightning port model, so check that your iPhone has that port.

But if your iPhone is newer and has a USB-C port, you can bag that too. It’s a tenner more. Just switch it with the button on that Amazon page.

You can play Call of Duty, Roblox, Fortnite and more with this controller.

And if you sign up to a cloud gaming service – like Xbox Cloud Gaming – you can play loads of proper console games too.

All prices in this article were correct at the time of writing, but may have since changed.

Always do your own research before making any purchase.

Man GORED by 1260lb beast at infamous Pamplona bull run with eight others hurt in stampede at annual death-defying event

A MAN has been gored by a 1260lb beast at the notorious Pamplona bull run festival as eight others were injured in the stampede.

The injuries are the latest to hit the northern Spanish region, with almost 300 incidents recorded each year from the death-defying event.

Some 300 injuries are recorded at the run every year[/caption]

After little more than two minutes, six men were rushed to hospital when two bulls became detached from the rest of the group.

One man, who was gored under his armpit, remains under observation.

“At this time, he is under observation but is in stable condition,” a medic confirmed.

Up to 4,000 runners take part in each bull run, which takes place over almost 850 metres and can last up to four minutes.

One of the bulls, Zalagarda, is this year’s heaviest beast and weighs a staggering 610kg – or 96 stone.

The run was the first of nine and followed a bustling opening ceremony in the northern Spanish town.

The Chupinazo festivities see thousands of revellers – dressed in traditional red and white garms – come together and drink sangria to mark the start of the San Fermin event.

DEADLY SPORT

Some 16 people have been killed at the annual festival, which was made famous by the 1926 Ernest Hemingway novel ‘The Sun Also Rises’.

Several foreigners, from Australians to Americans through to Brits and Irish, are normally among the injured.

The most recent death at the Pamplona event was in 2009 when 27-year-old Daniel Jimeno, from Madrid, was gored in the neck by a bull called Capuchino.

Elsewhere, a man was gored to death during a bull-running festival in El Casar, Spain.

His death was described by the local council as “an unfortunate accident” while animal rights campaigners condemned the event, calling it a waste of the town’s resources and “traumatic” for children.

The 20-year-old was gored in a bullring at the countryside festival and sustained injuries to his lung.

The unnamed victim later died on Monday at La Paz University Hospital in Madrid.

What is the Pamplona bull run?

The historical event is thought to have started in 1591 when apprentice butchers would shepherd the animals up to the bullring.

The festival is held on July 7 to July 14 in Pamplona, Spain each year.

Six Spanish fighting bulls, along with six steer, run from the Corrales de Santo Domingo to Pamplona’s Plaza de Toros bullfight arena.

Over a million spectators attend to watch thousands of runners take part over the 8 days of the San Fermín Festival.

The runs usually take between two to three minutes to complete. Participation is free and open to anyone over the age of 18.

There is a strong police presence at the event to avoid any injuries and prevent anyone who is drunk from participating in the dangerous event.

While the length of the course is just 875 metres long, it is virtually impossible for any runner to complete the length of it due to the number of participants and speed of the bulls.

That same year, another man, 51, died in a bull run event held in nearby Mesones when he slipped on a fence while trying to escape from the bulls.

The Animal Defence Association of El Casar hit out against the events.

A spokesman said: “Beyond the legal issues, these incidents generate expenses and consequences that affect all citizens, even those who oppose these events.

“The pain for this new victim is deep and part of our fight consists of preventing tragedies like this from continuing to occur.”

The association added: “Is this the best way to invest our resources and enjoy our leisure time?

“This kind of event not only puts people and animals at risk but also exposes children to traumatic situations that can shape their perception of the world.

“The well-being of people and respect for animals must be priorities in modern society and it is our responsibility to rethink whether these events reflect the values we want to promote.”

The campaigners are pressing for “safer, more educational entertainment that encourages the healthy enjoyment of free time, without risk to the physical or moral integrity of our community.”

‘Extremely hard to fault and his price will collapse’ – Templegate’s ante-post tips for a big week of racing

YOU can really get one over the bookies if you time the ante-post markets just right.

And with a number of fields looking likely to cut up at this week’s Newmarket July meeting and beyond, now is the time to strike.

Headshot of William Haggas.
PA
Templegate reckons William Haggas’ More Thunder is a bit of a good thing in the Bunbury Cup at Newmarket on Saturday[/caption]

Sun Racing’s Steve Mullen (Templegate) picks out three punts he fancies over the next few days.

NEWMARKET

Bet365 TROPHY (Friday)

ENDLESS VICTORY wasn’t given the greatest of rides in the Copper Horse Handicap at Royal Ascot last time.

I’m a big fan of William Buick but he held up this four-year-old for too long before he came home with a rattle to be beaten five lengths.

Barely any Charlie Appleby horse did themselves justice at the Royal meeting but that was a useful return to the UK four months after his last run in Dubai.

They know he sees out this 1m6f trip now so Buick can keep him a bit nearer to the pace and 7-1 looks a fair price.

BUNBURY CUP (Saturday)

I know putting up a horse at 3-1 for a big handicap is hardly rocket science but I still think MORE THUNDER should be shorter in Saturday’s Bunbury Cup.

Straight after his fantastic Wokingham run at Royal Ascot, I suggested he would be cracking each-way value for the Group 1 July Cup at this meeting.

Connections have chosen to keep him in the calmer waters of this 7f contest and he is extremely hard to fault.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he was something like 13-8 come off time.

RAAFEDD – BET 365 MILE (Newmarket, Sat) or JOHN SMITH’S HANDICAP (York, Sat)

RAAFEDD has always given me the impression that he’s better than a handicapper and he was the subject of a massive gamble into favourite for the Britannia at Royal Ascot last time.

He had an absolute nightmare run there and was pushed backwards before being blocked at least twice when trying to make his run.

Tom Marquand let him come home in his own time when it was clear the race had gone so ignore his finishing position.

It was just his fourth visit to the track and things can’t go as badly this weekend at either Newmarket or York where he has entries.

York looks the most likely target and he’s a fair 5-1 shot.

Should he go to Newmarket instead he’ll be a good deal shorter than the 14s currently on offer.

I work on a cruise ship – we can only buy drinking water 2 hours a day & there’s a secret signal for folk getting frisky

MANY people assume working on a cruise ship is just like taking an extended holiday.

However, Liv, a cruise ship worker, has revealed it’s not as fun as people think.

Woman explains that opening times vary, hence her snack haul.

Liv shared what it was really like to work and live ona cruise ship[/caption]

There was a secret signal they used onboard for when they were getting frisky[/caption]

Taking to social media, the Brit and her colleagues shared the negatives of working on a boat that would send people ‘into a coma.’

Liv said it started with ‘the mess’, a name for the restaurant they have to eat in.

She said that in her case, she ate there multiple times a day and had the option of curry or salad.

A coworker on the ship also revealed that to spend money on the ship, you have to use a special ‘crew card’ which can only be topped up in a two hour timeslot per day.

The workers often have to buy drinking water so if you don’t top your card up in time, you’re in trouble.

Liv added: “On a cruise ship, you live where you work. So imagine your apartment building is also your office block and there’s no escaping Jim from finance.

“He knows where you sleep.”

Another colleague said doing your laundry was a total nightmare, and if you’re even a few seconds late, you can find your wet clothes dumped on the floor as impatient staff want to use the machine.

Last but not least, the cruise employees shared how staff warn others not to come into their bedrooms if they are getting frisky.

“When you’re trying to go to bed and you see this,” said one worker as he pointed to the door signs.

She said it wasn’t quite the holiday people thought it was[/caption]

To the left of the door were the name cards of those staying in the room, but if one was turned upside down, it meant they were busy with someone and you shouldn’t come in.

The clip has since gone viral on Liv’s TikTok account @pandltravel with over 240k views and 7k likes.

People were quick to share their experiences working on cruise ships.

One person wrote: “Do you have a union? Because that drinking water thing seems like a problem.”

Pros and cons of going on a cruise ship

Whether you're considering a long holiday, working remotely or even living on board a cruise ship for a few months or years, here are the pros and cons from a former cruise shipper.

Pros

  • Travel the world, learn and experience new cultures
  • Meet new people
  • Don’t have to think or worry about room cleaning, or food

Cons

  • Internet connection can be painfully slow and expensive
  • Limited luggage allowance so have to wear the same clothes on rotation
  • Having no control of where the ship would go next and the possibility of visiting the same ports
  • Having the same onboard entertainment, on-demand movies, and little choice of TV channels
  • No fresh newspapers or new books unless someone adds them to the library
  • Relatively the same food week after week unless major menu changes occur seasonally.
  • Occasional rough seas, bad weather and viral outbreaks while inboard.

Another commented: “Working for a company that lets you eat in passenger restaurants and use the pools without any questions asked has to be my greatest achievement in life.”

“My number one problem with that is, what do you mean water isn’t free?” penned a third.

Meanwhile a fourth said: “Best place and the worst all at once!”

“Someone dumped my clothes out the dryer once and STOLE my bag,” claimed a fifth

Someone else added: “The laundry is a whole jungle.”

Joe Brolly urges RTE to make ‘national treasures’ main hurling commentators after seeing ‘hair-raising’ viral clip

JOE BROLLY urged RTE to make Marty Morrissey and John Mullane its primary hurling commentary duo for TV after seeing their joyous calling of Oisin O’Donoghue’s wonder goal.

Trying to describe the 19-year-old sub’s moment of magic was no small task given a three-pointer was in no way on when he got the sliotar.

The 1993 All-Ireland football winner loves hurling too

@JoeBrolly1993
The RTE Radio One commentary has been widely shared since Sunday[/caption]

But the pair managed to articulate its technical brilliance as well as sheer audacity whilst also conveying the overcome excitement viewers nationwide felt at the exact same moment.

Hailing them on X, Brolly posted: “Why are these two not doing all the big hurling matches on TV? Absolutely hair raising from the pair of them.

“The joy. The knowledge. The way they capture the feeling. National bloody treasures.”

When O’Donoghue unleashed his top corner effort past Eoin Murphy, there was an understandable momentary pausing of the “No cheering in the press box” rule as Morrissey and Mullane weren’t the only recognisable faces seen losing their collective minds.

Des Cahill, Shane McGrath and Henry Shefflin were visible in the row behind with a few people noting their contrasting reactions given the latter pair’s allegiances.

The clip was shared on The Sunday Game’s Instagram account with fans loving the raw emotion of it all despite the protagonists hailing from Clare and Waterford respectively.

Samuel hailed: “John Mullane just brings a passion to commentary on hurling. His natural grá for the game comes out.”

Similarly, Lurlene added: “I listened to it on the radio! Picture perfect audio portrait of what was happening.”

Caitriona praised: “Pure gold!!! Shane Mcg reaction in the background. Magical day!”

There was a comparable scene pitchside between Jackie Tyrrell and Liam Sheedy with the former sportingly initiating a handshake with the ex-Premier boss.

Both TV pundits as well as neutral observer Ursula Jacob acknowledged that Darragh McCarthy’s second yellow card was harsh if the correct call by the letter of the law.

That slightly contentious decision has been completely overshadowed by another controversial moment however.

Human error was responsible for the scoreboard incorrectly awarding Tipperary an extra point from the 70th minute onwards. Crucially, referee James Owen did not make the same mistake.

But Kilkenny players have a right to feel aggrieved considering they chased a goal unnecessarily thinking their deficit was then four points rather than three.

While analysing how the confusion arose on The Sunday Game, Brendan Cummins noted that one umpire put his hand up to catch the sliotar as Noel McGrath’s shot went just wide while the other official signalled it was wide.

Kilkenny then had two attacks where firstly Eoin Cody and secondly John Donnelly needlessly went for goal from long-range.

CANNING VERDICT

Joe Canning outlined how Kilkenny’s players clearly forced the issue as they felt they were in a bigger hole than they were in actuality.

Speaking about them thinking they were initially down by four immediately after McGrath’s phantom point, he emphasized: “Psychologically that’s huge because then you feel you have to get a goal and a point.

“When you’re only two points down you’re thinking we can tap one over and then try and win the puck-out so you can tap another one over.

“So for Kilkenny’s players, psychologically, chasing three points (that late on) is way different from chasing two points.”

Later on in the programme Canning returned to just how vital Robert Doyle’s goal-line block from Donnelly’s rasping effort had been.

The Galway great added: “He’s lucky because if they got that goal at the end of the match, Kilkenny would’ve won by the referee.

“Kilkenny would’ve been a point up yet everybody in the stadium would’ve thought it was a drawn match. So he saved the GAA I’d say!”
