Tiny European island named the best in the world – and people say it’s a ‘smaller Mykonos’

THE Greek island of Paros has been declared the best island in the world.

Travel + Leisure‘s annual World’s Best Islands reveals some of the finest across the globe based on thousands of reader responses.

Paros is part of the Cyclades and last year was 24th on the list, but for 2025 has come in first place.

Travel + Leisure readers said they loved the delicious food on the island as well as “picture-perfect blue and white villages like Naoussa.

Paros was so well-loved by the voters that it received a vote of 96.50 out of 100.

The Greek island has been up and coming for a while, a study last year by American Express Travel included the island in their 2025 Trending Destinations list.

The website stated: “Laid-back Paros has become the Greek island of choice for many.

“The cultural scene is vibrant here, and the rocky coastline is studded with beaches, secluded coves, and sea caves.

“A mere 40-minute flight from Athens—or three hours on a ferry—this windblown retreat is also easy to get to.”

The main town on the island is Parikia which is not only the capital, but the port too.

It’s the hub for ferry traffic which connects it to neighbouring islands.

One of the most popular towns on the island is Naoussa which is second largest on the island and has been called a “smaller version of Mykonos“.

The island is less popular than the likes of Mykonos, but is getting more visitors[/caption]

The town is on the northern side of the island and is considered one of the prettiest in the whole of the Cyclades with chalky white buildings and deep blue detailing.

Lageri Beach, which is popular in Naoussa was described as being “heaven on earth” by more than one visitors on Tripadvisor.

Up on the hillside is Lefkes, a mountain village surrounded by olive groves and pine forests.

The village has winding stone streets full of bright, contrasting bougainvillea flowers.

Being surrounded by the sparkling Aegean Sea means that Paros is popular for boat trips, snorkelling, diving and water skiing.

The streets are lined with tiny cafes and bars which light up in the evening.

There’s also a vibrant nightlife scene with clubs and even boat parties.

For anyone visiting Greece, Paros is pretty easy to visit thanks to the ferry service.

From Mykonos, you can hop on the ferry to Paros which cost £28 and is just 45 minutes.

Afterwards, you can explore the neighbouring island of Naxos which from Paros costs just £6 with Omnio, and is also the quickest journey taking 25 minutes.

Here are more beautiful islands from a Greece expert who has better value recommendations.

And another island with 70 beaches that you should see before it gets too popular.

Man Utd set to rake in millions thanks to Newcastle as Anthony Elanga sell-on clause kicks in

MANCHESTER UNITED are about to receive some much-needed funds thanks to Anthony Elanga’s transfer to Newcastle.

The Swedish winger, who joined Nottingham Forest from United for £15million two summers ago, looks set to join the Magpies in a deal reported to be worth around £60m.

Elanga was at Man Utd for three seasons before leaving for Nottingham Forest in 2023[/caption]

Forest will make around £45m profit from the club record sale – while United will also benefit thanks to a sell-on clause that was added when they sold him to Forest.

It is worth around 15 per cent of any profit so if the deal does reach £60m, SirJim Ratcliffe could see an extra £6m to £7m go in the Old Trafford coffers.

The cash will be a welcome boost for United as they try to complete their summer business.

They have already brought in Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62m.

And they are trying to get a move for Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo over the line, with the two clubs still haggling over the price.

United are said to have offered £60million for the ace but Brentford are holding out for £65m – meaning the Elanga windfall could make the difference for the cash-strapped Reds.

Elanga has reportedly agreed the deal to move to St. James’ Park and is set to undergo a medical in the next 48 hours, report The Athletic.

He will become Newcastle’s first major capture of the summer after the arrival of 18-year-old Antoñito Cordero.

The 23-year-old scored six goals and provided 11 assists in the Prem last season.

He made 83 appearances for Forest including 38 games in the top flight in the last campaign.

Elanga – whose incredible pace has been revealed in a clip from an athletics track – managed 55 games for United, scoring four and assisting another four.

Jannik Sinner injury fears as he schedules MRI hours after Dimitrov retirement with Wimbledon quarter-final at risk

JANNIK SINNER’S Wimbledon quarter-final could be at risk as he undergoes an MRI scan today.

The world No1 was fortunate to get through on Monday night.

He was in serious pain after hurting his elbow[/caption]

He trailed Grigor Dimitrov 6-3 7-5 2-2 on Centre Court when the Bulgarian appeared to tear his pectoral muscle.

Dimitrov retired in tears amid emotional scenes – as Sinner survived an almighty scare to progress.

The Italian, though, had his own injury scare.

Sinner took a heavy tumble very early on in the match on Centre Court and hurt his elbow.

He received treatment during a medical time-out during the second set.

And the Australian Open and US Open champion was spotted with ice strapped to his arm after the victory before conducting his media duties.

Sinner – who ironically axed his physiotherapist and trainer on the eve of Wimbledon – revealed he will have to be checked over today to ensure there is no significant damage.

He said last night: “It happened very early in the match, first game. It was quite an unfortunate fall.

“I have checked the videos a little bit, and it didn’t seem a tough one, but I still felt it quite a lot, especially on the serve and forehand.

“So let’s see. Tomorrow we are going to check to see how it is, and then we see.

“Here they have good ATP physios, in any case. The doctors are good.

“As I said, tomorrow we are going to check with MRI to see if there’s something serious, and then we try to adjust it.”

But if the MRI flags up some serious concerns, there is a chance Sinner could be forced to withdraw from the tournament to protect his elbow from further problems, especially ahead of the US hard-court swing.

Crucially, Sinner was not named on the list of practice court bookings for Tuesday – but the rest of Monday’s winners were – possibly hinting he is either not fit to play or he needs to maximise rest.

He is due to face big-serving American No10 seed Ben Shelton tomorrow for a place in the final four.

Shelton is being cheered on by his family, including sister Emma who has got time off from her job at Morgan Stanley to be at Wimbledon.

And his new girlfriend and US football star Trinity Rodman has also been in his box.

Limerick captain Cillian Fahy hopes to make history in Tailteann Cup final against Kildare

LIMERICK skipper Cillian Fahy hopes they can be heroes . . . just for one day.

The Treaty are gearing up for Saturday’s Tailteann Cup final against Kildare at Croke Park — as they chase down their first Championship silverware since the 1896 All-Ireland.

The Shannonsiders overcame Wicklow in the semi-final in Croke Park

The hurling lovers in the county are well used to glory after John Kiely’s men won five All-Irelands between 2018 and 2023.

Their shock All-Ireland quarter-final loss to Dublin last month sent them crashing out of the 2025 Championship. But Jimmy Lee’s men are flying the flag this weekend.

Living in hurling’s shadow has not been easy but their Division 4 final win over Wexford in March was a taste of what followed.

Limerick took Westmeath’s scalp to top their Tailteann Cup group and banished Wicklow in the semis at GAA HQ to set up Saturday’s showdown against the Lilywhites.

And Fahy hopes their latest run to Croker can spark a new love for the big ball in the county.

He said: “It’s massive. You go into the city and in parts of the city we could be No  4 behind hurling, rugby, soccer . . . I was only thinking as well the other day, the league final was probably the first time a lot of kids in Limerick actually saw us play.

“We don’t have a big following, so to actually get on TV on the league final day was probably the first time a lot of people had seen us this year.

“So to get this far, to stay in the shop window as long as we have, to be on RTÉ two weeks ago and again this weekend is massive.

“It’s really important for children to see, kids to see that there’s a competitive team in Limerick and that there is a chance to get up to Croke Park and there is a chance to be competing for silverware.”

Rathkeale, Newcastle-West and Adare have always been football strongholds. But the bulk of the county gives hurling most of the love.

Billy Lee, and men like him, have kept football’s flames burning. In 2022, he led the county to promotion to Division 2 and a first Munster final appearance in 12 years.

His brother, Jimmy picked up the baton after a disastrous 2023 saw Ray Dempsey quit after five league games following a meeting with the players.

But the only way was up under the Newcastle-West native.
And Fahy has hailed Limerick’s brothers in arms for their dedication to the Treaty cause.

He explained: “Billy and Jimmy are two incredible individuals. Similar in ways but massively different in other ways.

“I suppose they’re both similar in terms of they’re well able to put an arm around a fella. They’ve great people skills. But they’re both well able to, if you’re not doing what you’re supposed to be doing, to let you know about it.

“I suppose they’re more similar than different. But look, they’re two great characters and they’re two massively important people in terms of Limerick football and the good things that have gone on in the last ten years.

“But, look, what Jimmy has done in terms of picking lads up off the ground last year and putting together, I suppose, a group this year that’s able to compete . . . Massive credit has to go to him for that.”

MORE THAN US

Fahy turns 30 later this month. Climbing the Hogan Stand steps again would be the ultimate present — for him and those who have kept Limerick football alive.

He said: “Look, I suppose Limerick football is a small community. There are pockets all over the county that would be football.

“They have been there with us all the way throughout the league from January, all the way through and the years gone by.

“You see those people week in and week out at games. We might get a few extra now at the weekend. But look, that’s the people who are doing it for us.”

Di Maria amassed five Ligue 1 titles among a host of prizes with Paris Saint-Germain, plus five trophies in Portugal with Benfica.

He commanded a £59million fee in 2014 when United signed him from Madrid, but managed just four goals in 32 games.

The Red Devils took a £15m hit on him when selling him to PSG a year later.

Di Maria has now gone back to hometown club Rosario, 18 years after leaving the central Argentine city for Benfica.

He had been due to join them last year, but death threats from the drugs underworld prompted him to postpone his move.

The 37-year-old said: “I am proud of all I have achieved until now, but this moment surpasses everything.

“It is very special for me to be able to come home after such a long time – so many years.

“Being able to return to Rosario with my family, to pull on the Central shirt once more and to make the fans happy again means everything.

“It is something I had dreamed about doing for a long time.

“I had wanted it to happen sooner, but unfortunately it was not possible.

“But that’s in the past, and I’m here now.  I am happy, with my family, and this is what I wanted.

“I have had the opportunity to meet all my new teammates, to train, wear the club shirt once again, and to play for this great club once more.”

Viktor Gyokeres’ plan B revealed if Arsenal and Sporting can’t agree on £68.9m transfer

VIKTOR GYOKERES will consider a worst-case-scenario loan move away from Sporting Lisbon should his dream Arsenal switch fall through.

But SunSport understands the Swede has been encouraged by recent negotiations as the Portuguese giants stick to their £68.9m evaluation.

Mikel Arteta is closing in on ending his lengthy pursuit of a world class No.9, having also targeted Red Bull Leipzig’s 22-year-old Benjamin Sesko.

Yet Arteta is believed to have settled on 27-year-old Gyokeres, who was always favoured by sporting director Andrea Berta, netting an astonishing 97 goals in 102 appearances for Sporting since August 2023.

Arsenal remain locked in talks with Sporting, with SunSport revealing that the North Londoners are currently £4.3m away from the asking price of £60.3m up front and £8.6m in add-ons following face-to-face meetings in Lisbon.

Personal terms are already in place on a five-year-deal, with the add-ons in the deal relating to goal and trophy bonuses.

The Swedish goal machine, alongside agent Hasan Çetinkaya, is quietly confident he will be an Arsenal player in the coming weeks, with Arteta keen to include him on their pre-season tour of Singapore and Hong Kong from July 19 to August 2.

But SunSport understands the player has a ‘Plan B’ should he not make the Emirates switch – waiting until the end of the summer window and going out on loan to a European club.

This is not an unfamiliar tactic – Victor Osimhen pulled off the same move last summer when deals to leave Napoli for Saudi side Al-Ahli and then Chelsea fell through at the last minute.

The 26-year-old Nigerian striker decided against remaining in Italy, instead joining Galatasaray on a season-long loan, scoring 37 goals in 41 appearances.

Reports suggest that Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce are among those sniffing around in case Gyokeres needs a loan move this summer, while Manchester United and Juventus have also been monitoring the situation.

However, with Gyokeres turning 28 next June, his camp view this summer as the best time to secure the biggest move of his career when he is at the peak of his powers.

Gyokeres says he will never play for Sporting again in an attempt to push the deal through, and will boycott pre-season training, which begins on Friday.

This anger stems from a belief that Sporting have gone against a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ to allow him to leave this summer for around £60m, despite his current contract running until 2028.

Arsenal still have an eye on Sesko should they not get Gyokeres over the line – the Slovenian is valued at around £70m and has a contract in Germany until 2029.

Shane Lowry throws ‘amazing’ birthday party for wife Wendy with Irish rugby legend among guests

SHANE Lowry threw an “amazing” birthday party for his wife Wendy over the weekend – with Peter O’Mahony among the attendees.

The celebratory affair was largely kept out of the public spotlight though Shane did share one family pic from it.

Newly retired rugby legend O’Mahony was among the guestlist

He captioned his sweet Instagram post: “Amazing weekend celebrating my queens big birthday. It couldn’t have went better and we feel so blessed to have all our friends and family there.”

It’s evident that O’Mahony was there as he commented: “Great night! Happy Bday Wendy!”

Peter’s spouse Jessica was also there to mark Wendy’s big day as she added: “It was the best!”

Per Extra.ie the shindig was held in House Dublin which is a boujee social venue on Leeson Street.

It’s stated that the golf ace booked out the whole garden area so that everyone could party the night away without being hassled for selfies etc.

Other famous faces in attendance included TV host Brian Ormond and actor Laurence Kinlan of Love/Hate renown.

Shane, 38, is currently gearing up for The Open which will take place next week.

It’ll hopefully be a case of lightning striking twice for the Offaly native as he’ll be aiming to replicate his magical 2019 triumph as the major returns to Royal Portrush.

He’s opted to skip this week’s Scottish Open ahead of the year’s final major.

But Rory McIlroy and Padraig Harrington will be teeing it up in the co-sanctioned event at the Renaissance Club.

The Genesis Scottish Open field is strong with most of the world’s top players in action.

World No1 Scottie Scheffler heads the pack against a field that includes the top five and eight of the top 10 players in the Official World Golf Rankings, plus 15 of the top 20 in the FedExCup standings.

The tournament is co-sanctioned between the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour – and there’s $1,530,000 up for grabs for the winner from a total purse of $9,000,000.

Last year, local favourite Robert MacIntyre went one better than his second-place finish behind McIlroy in 2023.

He edged out Adam Scott by a single stroke to claim victory – marking the Oban native’s second title in just two months. However, one notable absentee this week is Lowry.

The world number 18 has been seen preparing at Portmarnock, Royal Portrush and Baltray in recent weeks as he looks to earn a second win at the Antrim venue.

Last weekend’s PGA Tour John Deere Classic winner Brian Campbell will also be in the field in North Berwick.

The purse in 2025 remains the same with the winner also set to take advantage of the elevated 8,000 Race to Dubai points (500 FedExCup), and 2,000 Ryder Cup points on offer.

Meanwhile, Ireland’s Conor Purcell and Seamus Power will head to Louisville, Kentucky to compete in the alternate event, the ISCO Championship.

Mystery as huge UK band cancel two gigs just hours before they’re due on stage blaming ‘unforeseen circumstances’

MASSIVE Attack fans have been left heartbroken after the band cancelled two gigs just hours before being due on stage.

Blaming “unforeseen circumstances”, the trip hop collective announced the first cancellation on Monday night, ahead of their KUNST!RASEN gig in Bonn, Germany.

According to local reports from the General-Anzeiger, fans received word of the concert being called off just two hours before doors were set to open.

A brief statement from organisers, emailed to local news outlet General-Anzeiger, read: “Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Massive Attack concert has been canceled today. Tickets can be returned where they were purchased.”

No further reason was provided, and follow-up requests for clarification were met with silence – fuelling frustration among ticketholders, some of whom had already travelled long distances for the show.

One fan wrote on Reddit: “My girlfriend is currently in the airport and she just saw the news. She’s in tears. I don’t know how to calm her.”

Another simply said: “Totally disappointing.”

The Bonn concert wasn’t the only one scrapped at the last minute.

A second show — scheduled for Vienna the following night — was also pulled, again with no detailed explanation.

Speculation online has quickly mounted, with some fans suggesting political reasons could be behind the decision.

In recent gigs, Massive Attack have openly shown support for Palestine, screening pro-Palestinian documentaries and waving Palestinian flags on stage.

Some Reddit users have speculated that this stance may have clashed with Germany’s strict new regulations around political expression, particularly rules that have controversially redefined some support for Palestine as antisemitic.

One suggested: “Playing a pro Palestine documentary & waving the flag would be against the law.”

It comes less than a week after Massive Attack headlined Poland’s Open’er Festival with a politically-charged set that included footage of a devastated Gaza, a dedication to the Palestinian people and chants of “Free Palestine” from the crowd.

Frontman Robert Del Naja told fans: “Never again must mean never again for everybody.”

So far, the band have not addressed the cancellations publicly – and they do not have any further dates lined up.

Representatives for Massive Attack have been contacted for comment.

Married at First Sight star reveals she’s back together with her ex after slamming experience on the show

A MARRIED At First Sight Australia star has revealed she’s back together with her ex, after recently slamming her experience on the show.

Veronica Cloherty appeared on the hit E4 reality show earlier this year, and had a rocky time during the experiment.

The star has now revealed she is back with hr ex boyfriend[/caption]

The Sydney-based actress, 32, was a late addition to the latest series of Married At First Sight Australia.

During her time on the show she was matched with Eliot Donovan, who had previously walked out on his first MAFS wedding to Lauren Hall.

However, the pair had a rocky romance that saw them have multiple arguments.

They split shortly before the final vows, and haven’t seen each other since.

Keen to move on with her life, Veronica has revealed she has got back together with her ex-boyfriend.

Although she hasn’t revealed his name, she shared a clip on her Instagram Stories which showed her on a beach looking happy and relaxed.

As she panned the camera around, a man can be seen briefly jumping behind her in the background.

Writing over the sweet clip, Veronica quoted a fan who commented that she “looked happier”, to which she replied: “Thanks, I’m talking to my ex again.”

SLAMMING MAFS

This latest revelation comes a few weeks after she opened up about her experience of being on MAFS, and the negative impact it has had her life.

She talked about how she “became the show’s villain” which resulted in her being subjected to cruel trolling online.

Speaking to the MailOnline in May about her experience, she confessed: “It became very apparent to me very quickly that I was a side piece in a bigger story and learning that Eliot had already been on the show kind of blindsided me right from the start.”

Despite seeming to click at the wedding and enjoying their honeymoon together, the pair where then dogged by arguments.

It often appeared on screen that Veronica was the more unreasonable of the two, and was seen storming out on a few occasions.

Veronica’ said the marriage to Elliot was doomed from the start[/caption]

But the reality TV bride now claims that viewers weren’t shown the whole picture.

“The edit didn’t make any sense to me,” she said.

“The Eliot that I experienced was closer to the Eliot that was first portrayed.

“I had difficulties with him from the wedding, and we had tense conversations throughout our honeymoon that were uncomfortable, that were disrespectful.”

She continued: “It’s just been really challenging for me to grapple with how it’s all been portrayed publicly and then also how I felt being in that situation.

“There were many moments where I wanted to leave and I was having those conversations prior to even getting to the dinner party.”

Talking about the horrific trolling she experienced, she told the outlet: “Look, it’s been really difficult.

“I actually got my TikTok back yesterday and there’s more than like 3000 messages in there and pretty much every single one of them is advising me to take my own life.”
