World’s first portable mosquito ‘air defence’ blasts biters with lasers to neutralise them on its own, inventor claims

A MOSQUITO-busting laser that can supposedly kill up to 30 mozzies a second has been proposed by a Chinese firm.

The gadget, called Photon Matrix, is claimed to be able to detect the mosquito, as well as its angle and size, within just three milliseconds.

As soon as the mosquito is detected, a second laser beam is fired to kill it.

The laser will allegedly scan its surroundings to avoid firing at larger objects such as people and pets.

However, it is still a prototype – so it is unclear if it can really do the job just yet.

The company expects to make its first deliveries of the product in October this year.

Although major production is forecast to begin by March 2026.

According to its inventor, Jim Wong from Changzhou, China, it is a “prototype of the first mosquito air defence system capable of identifying and neutralizing mosquitoes using high-specification LiDAR technology.”

Photon Matrix can detect objects that are flying at a top speed of 3.3 feet (one meter) per second.

That parameter is good news for house flies, which will only be fatally hit by it if they are flying really slowly.

Mosquitoes, however, typically fly at a much slower pace than house flies.

So it weeds out the nasty critters, without taking out harmless house flies.

To this end, Wong says the mini laser weapon will not harm humans or pets, and is safe for use indoors.

Wong is raising money for the project on crowdfunding site Indiegogo, and the campaign has already met the its initial goal, Interesting Engineering reported.

Mosquitoes are responsible for over 700,000 deaths annual due to the diseases they spread – including Malaria, Dengue, Chikungunya, and Encephalitis.

According to the Indiegogo page for the device, the basic edition of Photon Matrix has a waterproof design and can be installed easily.

This leaves it best placed to sit by water, which tends to attract mosquitoes – especially in summer.

It can also be powered by a simple power bank or through a portable power station, according to the listing.

The compact device on display is said to have a range of 9.84 feet (3 meters) for the basic version.

However, the pro version can detect mozzies up to 19.6 feet (6 meters) away, according to the inventor.

Both the basic and pro versions have a scan angle of 90 degrees.

While the basic version is on offer for $468 (£345), the pro version is available for $668 (£492) – though these are early bird prices.

Hand luggage rule change ‘will spark MORE delays & confusion’ as 2 major UK airports scrap limit – how clued up are you?

A HAND luggage rule change will “spark more delays and confusion” after two major UK airports lifted their restrictions.

Those jetting off from Birmingham and Edinburgh could face longer queues with both changing hand luggage rules in the past week.

Both airports have now lifted the 100ml liquid rule[/caption]

If you’re travelling from either airport, you can now take two litres of liquid in your cabin bags.

But all other UK airports will still have to follow the 100ml liquid restriction.

The same applies to most airports in continental Europe meaning Brits won’t be able to bring larger liquids back in their hand luggage.

But more airports could follow Birmingham and Edinburgh’s lead in the months to come.

However, this could mean longer waits to get through security as each will be able to set its own timescale in rolling out the rule change.

One airline source told The Times that the timing was “absurd and would inevitably cause extra queues and confusion this summer.”

They added: “Given most people don’t know about the change and just do 100ml anyway, it’s hard to follow the logic of allowing individual airports to have different rules for the busiest period of the year.”

The 100ml rule was first introduced nearly two decades ago in 2006.

It was implemented after a terror plot was discovered to blow up planes flying from London to the US with home-made liquid bombs.

The Department for Transport required all major airports to bring in next generation security checkpoints (NGSCs) by this summer.

The technology creates a 3D image of what’s inside a passenger’s bag which would allow airports to scrap the 100ml liquid rule.

It also ends the need for laptops and tablets to be removed from hand luggage.

These changes were first proposed in August 2019 but the rollout of the technology has been complicated.

Major airports were initially given a deadline of December 2022 to deploy the new scanners.

But after the aviation industry suffered huge disruption due to coronavirus travel restrictions in 2020, a new deadline was set for June 1, 2024.

Some smaller airports complied on time and The Sun reported last May that the 100ml rule was already a thing of the past in three UK airports.

Teeside Airport, London City Airport and Aberdeen International Airport all had their scanners installed ahead of the June deadline.

But larger airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick and Manchester failed to do so.

They claimed that supply chain delays and construction difficulties caused by the weight of the machines were the reasons behind the delay.

But then, last June, the Department for Transport suddenly announced that the old 100ml liquid rule would be reinstated as a “temporary measure” before the blanket restriction was lifted in May this year.

Airports were then told that they could ease the rules once the scanners had been installed and approved.

Julia Lo Bue-Said, chief executive of the Advantage Travel Partnership, told MailOnline: “Removing the 100ml liquid rules for passengers is a positive step forward for air travel however having individual airports set their own timelines on lifting the 100ml restrictions on liquids is likely to cause confusion to travellers this summer and will result in delays.

“The slow rollout has already led to confusion and frustration and travellers are likely to be tripped up if the rules continue to change as short notice and vary for different airports.

“It is clear that all airports are not ready to introduce these new rules at the same time, and we would encourage all UK airports collectively to work with government to ensure there is very clear messaging around the rules, to avoid confusion and delays wherever possible.”

Birmingham announced last Wednesday that it was lifting the 100ml rule and Edinburgh did the same yesterday.

Edinburgh installed eight new top-of-the-range scanners as part of a £24 million investment to transform its security.

The first major Scottish airport to scrap the rule, Edinburgh now has eight security lanes, an increase of two after implementing the new scanners.

Gordon Dewar, chief executive of Edinburgh Airport, said: “This is a big day for our passengers and the airport team – we are delighted to be able to lift this rule and really transform the whole security process, making it easier for everyone.

“A whole generation of travellers have only known the 100ml rule to be the case, so it really is a momentous day as we become the first airport in Scotland to lift the rule since it was introduced in 2006.

“The change allows more flexibility for passengers to take liquids through security, all while maintaining and improving our high safety levels through the use of 3D technology.

“But it is important that passengers continue to check with the situation at their return airport as not all airports will be moving away from 100ml just yet.”

Passengers are urged to check which rules are in place for the airport they’re departing from before they travel.

He was cheered on by his family including parents Bryan and Lisa plus sister Emma, whose job at bankers Morgan Stanley prompted hilarious boos earlier in the tournament.

But also in his box has been new girlfriend Trinity Rodman, with the sporting duo dating since March.

Rodman, 23, is a striker for the US women’s national team, with 11 goals in 47 caps for her country.

She is also the daughter of NBA legend Dennis Rodman, who won five NBA titles and was team-mates with Michael Jordan.

However, Rodman Jr took to social media to reveal she does not have a relationship with dad Dennis.

She wrote on Instagram during Wimbledon: “For Ben’s matches he has his family there as his support system, which includes his dad…

“My dad’s not even in MY life.

“No need to bring him up during HIS matches when I don’t even want him talked about during mine.

“It’s him and his loved ones’ moment.

“Thank you.”

Rodman was regularly shown live on BBC TV throughout Monday’s win rocking a stunning two-piece blue outfit.

But BBC commentator Andrew Castle came under fire on social media for accidentally and repeatedly calling Rodman “Tiffany” instead of “Trinity”.

And the blunder caught the attention of the famous footballer.

She added on her story: “For those who don’t know… my name is TRINITY not Tiffany.”

She followed it up with crying and laughing emojis.

Rodman will be hoping for more celebrations when Shelton takes on Jannik Sinner in tomorrow’s quarter-final.

However, the Italian world No1 is a risk after hurting his elbow against Grigor Dimitrov.

Dimitrov retired in tears after appearing to tear his pectoral muscle when serving at two sets up.

But Sinner himself had a medical time-out for treatment on his elbow following an early fall.

He was spotted with ice strapped on to his arm last night and revealed he would be going for an MRI scan today.

Humiliating moment Putin’s giant new five-tonne AI war drone smashes into RUSSIAN house in fiery blunder on test mission

THIS is the humiliating moment a hulking six-tonne Putin drone “guided by AI” crash landed on a Russian house during a test mission.

The Altius unmanned plane with a giant 94ft wingspan hit and destroyed a home on the outskirts of Kazan, southwest Russia after suffering a “navigation failure”.

The device suffered from a ‘navigation’ failure[/caption]

The reconnaissance drone – with a range of 6,200 mile range – was on a test flight for possible use in Ukraine.

But it all went wrong when the AI system navigating the plane reportedly stopped working and the drone landed on a Russian civilian home instead.

Miraculously, no-one was hurt.

Terrifying footage shows the device travelling overhead before panning to the burning home.

Giant flames are pictured engulfing the scorched residence as locals watch with horror.

Billowing black smoke fills the air as charred debris and rubble covers the ground and surrounding trees.

Residents escaped injury as the long-range UAV smashed into their house, and then scrambled to put out the fire before the emergency services arrived.

Developers blamed “unidentified electronic warfare equipment” for the navigation failure which occurred just under a mile away from Kazan Gorbunov Aircraft Plant.

The drone can hold a precision-guided bomb or missile payload.

An eyewitness said: “At first, we didn’t even think it was a plane.

“But when we saw the wing, we understood everything.”

This type of monster drone has been in service with the Russian military since 2021 but there is no record of it so far being deployed in the war in Ukraine.

The failed drone attack comes as Russia increases its blitz on Ukraine, hammering the country with 1,000 drones and missiles every day.

Yesterday, was the second massive assault in the four days since Trump’s call with Putin, and represents a brazen defiance of the President’s peace agenda.

Moscow’s firepower capacity is constantly increasing and his forces have regularly broken the record for the largest daily volley of weapons in recent weeks.

On June 1, a 479-strong wave of drones and missiles became Russia‘s largest unmanned aerial assault of the war.

June 9 saw that broken with 499, then again on June 29 with 537.

And finally, just last Friday, Putin terrorised Kyiv with a firestorm of 550 drones and missiles – just as he and Trump finished a phone call.

Russia’s defence industry is ballooning as projects come to fruition – such as an expanded missile plant in Votkinsk and rapidly expanding supply chains.

With an expanding arsenal, the size of Russia’s regular salvos look set only to increase – meaning they could soon nudge 1000 weapons per day.

Joe Schmidt’s Australia suffer HUGE injury blow ahead of test series against Andy Farrell’s British & Irish Lions team

JOE SCHMIDT’S Australia have been hit with a massive setback ahead of the British and Irish Lions test series.

The news comes as first-choice flyhalf Noah Lolesio was ruled out after undergoing neck surgery.

The news will come as a huge blow to Joe Schmidt ahead of the series against the Lions

Lolesio was stretchered off during the Wallabies’ win over Fiji on Sunday.

The Brumbies ten landed awkwardly on his head following a tackle.

A statement from Rugby Australia confirmed the devastating news: “After being initially discharged from hospital on Sunday night, Lolesio was readmitted for surgery this afternoon following a further medical follow-up.

“He is expected to make a full recovery and will spend a period of time away from the game during his rehabilitation.”

The injury comes just a few months after the player suffered a back injury for his club side.

Head coach Joe Schmidt will name his squad on Friday for the three-match series against Andy Farrell’s Lions in July and August.

The former Ireland and Leinster boss said: “Firstly, we were relieved that Noah was up and moving well when he returned to the team hotel after his initial hospital visit in Newcastle on Sunday.

“Further to that, it’s an added relief for everyone, especially his family, that successful surgery now has him on the road to recovery.”

Meanwhile, Joe Schmidt also delivered a blunt reality check for his side ahead of clashes against the British and Irish Lions.

The Wallabies needed a late try from captain Harry Wilson to edge past Fiji 21-18 in their opening fixture of the year last weekend, their only outing before the clashes against Andy Farrell’s side.

And the Schmidt was left in a sombre mood after a lucky escape against the Pacific Islanders.

Despite the game being their first outing since the turn of the year, the New Zealander admitted he expected more from his side.

He said: “We haven’t been together for six months, and to have five trainings and to be seamless would be an expectation I’d hope for rather than believe would immediately happen.

“Now we have another short run to improve on what we saw today.”

Meg chose to couple up with Dejon at the very start of Love Island, and they’ve been together ever since.

Despite many bombshells coming in wanting to get to know Dejon – he has remained loyal to “his Meg,” claiming the “tests” have only made them stronger as a couple.

They have faced much criticism from the other Islanders telling them to “close things off” – but Meg hit back saying they are just “jealous” of what they have.

However, tonight’s first look shows Meg breaking down in tears as she comes to a shocking revelation.

Meg tells Helena: “I just feel really upset today. I don’t know why.

“I was just talking about things with Em, and I don’t know, we just, like, certain things with me and D, like, it actually makes me realise he really doesn’t mean what he says sometimes.”

Meanwhile, in Casa Amor, Andrada admits she feels a “big spark” with Dejon – leaving him thrilled.

She confesses: “I feel like there’s a big spark here, do you know what I mean?”

Dejon agrees: “And I feel like the more time we spend with each other, the better things are getting.”

Andrada adds: “100%, I feel like something, like, draws us in together. Do you know?”

A surprised Dejon admits: “This is a bit crazy, you know, like, we really get along.”

“Yeah we do, don’t we?” Andrada laughs.

This comes after last night’s episode when Dejon’s eyes lit up after Andrada made a steamy confession.

clearly determined to turn his head for good, the newcomer opened up about her high sex drive.

When Dejon asked about her type, Andrada said: “I have to want them three times a day… I have to.”

Looking impressed, Dejon asked: “So you have a high sex drive?”

She said: “I do… It’s really bad,”

But Dejon remarked: “That’s not bad.”

Should Meg be worried about the recoupling?

Love Island continues tonight at 9pm on ITV2.

Cops release CCTV in hunt for man who ‘pulled pin on hand grenade on packed train’ after being told to stop swearing

POLICE have launched an urgent manhunt for a man they would like to speak to after a passenger threatened to detonate a grenade on a train.

The British Transport Police have released CCTV images of a man they would like to speak to after the incident on a train between Skegness and Nottingham.

A passenger who was spotted swearing on the train was approached by a train guard and asked to stop.

The man then pulled a grenade from his bag and pulled the pin on it in response to the guard.

Thankfully, the little bomb didn’t detonate and the man claimed to be joking.

He then went on to continue acting threateningly towards other passengers with the grenade still in his possession.

He eventually left the train at Boston with police launching a probe into the terrifying incident.

The harrowing experience unfolded on Sunday, May 18, with The British Transport Police now releasing images of a man they would like to speak to.

A statement given out alongside the images reads: “The force believe he may have information which could help the investigation.

“Anyone who recognises him or who has any information is asked to contact British Transport Police by texting 61016 or by calling 0800 40 50 40, quoting reference 392 of May 18, 2025.”
