WIMBLEDON is facing calls to move parts of its iconic queue – to save bats.
A short section of the lengthy path to The Championships, where 10,000 people a day have camped or waited to get in, runs through a Wimbledon Park bat protection zone.

GettyThere are calls for the queue to be moved to protect wildlife[/caption]
Queuers are not allowed to stand in the zone and are moved through quickly to avoid disturbing the black nocturnal mammals.
Activists claimed that tournament bosses should shift the queue entirely over fears it could be disturbing the protected animals.
Simon Wright, of the Save Wimbledon Park group, said the queue was defeating the point of a conservation area.
“Every year, we lose more of the park to the queue, and every year, they start building it earlier.
“There has not been a consideration of the impact of their plans on wildlife all the way through, so I’m not particularly surprised that they’re doing this.
“I’m a big fan of the bats of Wimbledon Park because it’s a lovely thing to do to go and sit by the lake at dusk and watch the bats feeding on the insects as they fly around.
“It’s completely ridiculous to have a bat protection zone and then put a load of people through it.
BEST ONLINE CASINOS – TOP SITES IN THE UK
“Just walking through will still disturb the bats’ natural environment, and they’re very sensitive creatures.”
No WiFi is available in the zone as critical wireless hardware used to beam signals to fans’ phones is not allowed.
But hopeful queuers are permitted to walk through the zone despite a drive to conserve the eight protected bat species in the 67-acre Wimbledon Park.
The move is not linked to WiFi signals, though previous studies have claimed radio waves can damage bats’ “magnetic compass”.
It can prevent the animals from remembering where their shelters are.
A 2017 study found birds, insects and plants are likely being harmed by electromagnetic radiation from Wi-Fi, cell phone towers, broadcast transmitters, and power lines.
Birds and insects affected by radio waves can become disorientated, though generally most are unaffected.
There is no suggestion of wrongdoing by Wimbledon’s organisers, who were asked to comment.

CHRISTIAN Horner survived a sexting scandal, an eight-hour grilling, and his wife’s agony only for his career to collapse a year later.

Horner after being made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in December
His sacking comes as Red Bull have slumped down the rankings with star driver Max Verstappen, 26, sitting in third.
Red Bull are also fourth in the Constructors standings and, even worse, Verstappen is reportedly eyeing a move to huge rivals Mercedes.
A source said at the time: “This has been weeks of hell for Christian and his family.
“As he has said all along, these claims are ‘nuts’.
ReutersHorner was sacked on Wednesday[/caption]
“Geri has been rock solid behind Christian – and his whole family is relieved and elated that it’s over. Those feelings are there but no one close to Christian feels like celebrating much after what he’s been through.”
They were seen before the race sharing an intimate kiss and then standing together afterwards as they watched the drivers take to the podium holding hands and hugging.
A KC cleared Horner for a second time in August after the unnamed accuser launched an appeal following the internal probe.
His £12million-a-year job was secured by support from the Thai majority owners of Red Bull but that seems to have worn out.
Horner outlasted the scandal and reports of a growing rift between him and the Verstappen camp.

GettyHorner was cleared twice of wrongdoing[/caption]
Verstappen’s father, Jos, a former racing driver, is reportedly a friend of the female complainant.
The Dutchman repeatedly called for Horner’s dismissal after the sexting scandal and hours before the Bahrain race in 2024.
Jos and Horner have had a long-running feud after they were seen locked in what looked like a fiery argument after the scandal.
Jos went at Horner after iconic designer Adrian Newey quit the team in May 2024, with son Max trying to play peacemaker.
In June last year, the pair were at war over Jos claiming Horner sabotaged his plans to drive in the Legends Parade in Monaco.
The pair reportedly had another row on Sunday at Silverstone, according to former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher.
Max claimed his fourth drivers title despite the behind-the-scenes carnage and on-track challenges from Britain’s Lando Norris in the arguably faster McLaren car in 2024.
But while Max would have been hoping to add to his collection of titles with another defence in 2025 – Red Bull have floundered and been left in the dust by McLaren.
Verstappen finds himself essentially in a one car team – with his teammate Liam Lawson being demoted after just two races, and then his replacement Yuki Tsunoda also failing to impress.

Max currently has 165 of Red Bull’s total points – while his two teammates combined have just 7.
But while the imperious Max has won two races in Suzuka and Imola, he is trailing both the McLaren cars of Norris and his teammate Oscar Piastri.
Verstappen’s disappointing weekend in Silverstone which saw him spinning after a safety car essentially put the title all but out of his reach.
With Verstappen reportedly looking at options such as Mercedes for 2026, Red Bull face being left without their star driver and their 20-year veteran team principal.
A look at Christian Horner's life and career
CHRISTIAN Horner is among the most well-known names in Formula One having helped build Red Bull into one of the biggest teams in the sport.
1973 – Born in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire
1991 – Wins a Formula Renault scholarship after impressing in karting races
1993-1997 – Competed in a host of competitions including British Formula Three, British Formula Two, and Formula 3000
1997 – Founded and developed the F3000 team Arden
1999 – Retired from driving and continued developing the Arden team
2005 – Appointed head of Red Bull team, becoming the youngest ever team principal at that time
2009 – Wins his first races as team principal with Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber
2010 – Wins the Constructors’ Championship and Drivers’ Championship with Vettel – the first of four doubles in a row
2013 – Has a daughter with ex-wife Beverly Allen shortly before the couple split
2014 – Gets engaged to Spice Girls member Geri Halliwell
2015 – Marries Halliwell in Woburn, Bedfordshire
2017 – Horner and Halliwell welcome their son
2021 – Wins another Drivers’ Championship with Max Verstappen, beating Lewis Hamilton on the final lap of the season
2022-23 – Red Bull win the Drivers’ Championship and Constructors’ Championship two years in a row
The team that has been a powerhouse in F1 since 2010 – winning four titles with Sebastian Vettel, four with Verstappen, and netting 124 Grand Prix wins – now faces an uncertain future.
Horner’s position had become more precarious since his ally and Red Bull co-founder Dietrich Mateschitz died in October 2022.
Red Bull managing director Oliver Mintzlaff said: “We would like to thank Christian Horner for his exceptional work over the last 20 years.
“With his tireless commitment, experience, expertise and innovative thinking, he has been instrumental in establishing Red Bull Racing as one of the most successful and attractive teams in Formula 1.
“Thank you for everything, Christian, and you will forever remain an important part of our team history.”
Laurent Mekies has been appointed as the new CEO of Red Bull Racing, stepping up from the Racing Bulls team.
What was claimed against Horner?
F1 was rocked last year by the sudden news that the sport's longest-standing team principal had been placed under investigation by Red Bull's Austria-based parent company.
This was thought to be over a “dossier of incriminating material” regarding “inappropriate and controlling behaviour” towards one female, The Telegraph reported.
The former racing driver, who runs world champion Max Verstappen’s all-conquering Red Bull team, endured an eight-hour grilling over the claims.
More allegations came as the De Telegraaf reported that Horner allegedly sent improper messages to his employee “over an extended period of time”.
Messages were claimed to have been saved and presented as evidence to the external barrister running the inquiry after the woman made a complaint last December.

What does Chrome's Incognito Mode hide?
Here's what you need to know...
Anyone on your Wi-Fi network could potentially use special spy software to view what you’re browsing, regardless of Incognito Mode.
And your employer will be able to use similar technology to see what you’re browsing at work, too.
It’s entirely possible that your employer logs every website you visit while at work.
Your internet service provider (like BT, Virgin, and so on) will also be able to see what you’re doing online.
That means the police can also get access to what you view in Incognito Mode, simply by requesting that information from your internet provider.
The websites you’re using will also be able to track that you’re online on their page, too.
Google will know where you’re browsing from, and what you’re looking at.
And if you log into a website, they’ll also be able to keep track of information about you.
So when you log into Facebook in Incognito Mode, details about what you do on the site will be recorded – just the same as if you were using it in a normal web browser.
The key point is that Incognito Mode is not a great method of ensuring privacy, because it’s still very easy to track what you’re doing online.
It’s only really useful for keeping websites out of your browsing history, or logging into a single website on multiple accounts in the same web browser.

“Savida is available exclusively at Dunnes Stores.”
THE HISTORY OF DUNNES STORES
DUNNES Stores opened its first store on Patrick Street in Cork in 1944 - and it was an instant hit.
Shoppers from all over the city rushed to the store to snap up quality clothing at pre-war prices in Ireland’s first ‘shopping frenzy’.
During the excitement, a window was forced in and the police had to be called to help control the crowds hoping to bag founder Ben Dunne’s ‘Better Value’ bargains.
Dunnes later opened more stores in the 1950s and began to sell groceries in 1960 – starting with apples and oranges.
The retailer said: “Fruit was expensive at the time and Ben Dunne yet again offered Better Value than anyone else in town.
“Over time, our food selection has grown and that spirit of good value has remained strong.
“Now we offer a wide range of carefully-sourced foods from both local Irish suppliers and overseas.”
The retailer’s first Dublin store opened its doors in 1957 on Henry Street and a super store on South Great Georges Street was unveiled in 1960.
They added: “In 1971, our first Northern Irish store opened, and many others soon followed.
“Expansion continued in the 1980s in Spain, and later into Scotland and England.”
Dunnes now has 142 stores and employs 15,000 people.

Brooklyn and his wife Nicola have put the ongoing Beckham feud behind them as they enjoy a trip to St Tropez.
Becks and wife Victoria were left “heartbroken” when their eldest child and his wife failed to attend the birthday celebrations.
As well as David’s big bash, Brooklyn was also absent from the pre-birthday fishing trip with his sons Cruz and Romeo, an intimate dinner at their Cotswolds home and his star-studded soiree in London.
Although she received some harsh comments, there were also supportive messages, with one fan writing: “The fact people are in this comment section talking bs about someone controlling a GROWN man is absurd.
“The guy is an adult and can make his own decisions, leave them be and stop blaming women for everything.”
Nicola then was seen “liking” the comment, as she agreed with what the fan was saying.

EMILY Brazier’s newborn baby girl died after she was left alone during labour, a coroner has found.
The Cardiff mum was sedated and behind a curtain when she gave birth unattended, having fallen into a coma after a bad reaction to painkillers.
PAEmily Brazier and Rhodri Thomas with their daughter Liliwen[/caption]
PAThe baby died 20 hours after being born[/caption]
Little Liliwen Iris Thomas was born on October 10, 2022, but died just 20 hours later at the University Hospital of Wales in what has been described as “the most tragic case”.
Midwives failed to recognise Emily was in active labour and only found baby Liliwen “between mum’s legs,” hidden beneath a bedsheet, the Pontypridd inquest heard.
Emily was heavily monitored in the lead-up to her labour, as she had a condition which heightened the risk of complications.
She had been admitted for induction on October 8 and was induced the following day.
She was given a cocktail of painkillers, including pethidine, codeine, and gas and air, called Entonox, to ease her labour pains.
Her partner Rhodri Thomas had been asked to return home because of a policy then in place of having no partners on the ward from 9pm to 9am, unless their partner was in active labour.
But staff failed to properly check Emily or carry out a physical exam, missing clear signs she was in active labour and should have been moved to one-to-one care.
She was not checked at all between 1:15a, and 2:14am when a “faint cry for help was heard” and midwives rushed to her, which is when newborn Liliwen was discovered in “poor condition”.
“I vividly remember peeling back the covers and seeing Liliwen there, completely still and lifeless,” Emily previously said.
“I can only describe it as a blood bath. That image will be with me forever.”
“I still have flashbacks and nightmares and have been in counselling since,” she added.
A medical expert’s report, cited by the BBC, concluded that Emily likely experienced an “exaggerated pharmacological response resulting in a coma.”
“During this time, she delivered the baby unattended and was unable to call for help.”
The report added this was “most likely due to sensitivity to codeine and pethidine,” and that her “self-administration of Entonox contributed to Ms Brazier’s inability to respond.”
Doctors immediately attempted resuscitation, but little Liliwen tragically passed away 20 hours later.
A post-mortem revealed she died from a lack of oxygen at birth, a bacterial infection, and problems with the placenta.
PAThe mum was alone when she gave birth[/caption]

Emily was closely monitored throughout her pregnancy.
She was undergoing induction because of low pregnancy-associated plasma protein A (PAPP-A), the same condition she had with her older daughter, Carys.
She was under the care of a consultant during her pregnancy with Liliwen.
Several scans were done over the months to check the baby’s wellbeing.
It was noted that when she gave birth to Carys three years earlier, her labour moved very quickly after she received pethidine and Entonox pain relief.
She was given the same medications for Liliwen’s birth.
‘I am so, so sorry’
The coroner’s court heard this happened when the ward was “exceptionally busy”.
Staff shortages were also “so acute that there was a call to the community to bring midwives in”.
At the time, 17 hospital midwives were on shift, with two drafted in from the community.
The minimum number of midwives that should be available during the day in 24, according to the health board.
Giving evidence, head of midwifery Ms Holmes, who was not in post at the time, described it as “the most tragic case”.
“The impact it has had on us as a staffing body has been greatly felt by every member of our team, regardless of grade,” she said.
Addressing the family directly, Ms Holmes added: “We are working tirelessly to make sure something like this never happens again.
“I know this doesn’t bring your daughter back and I am so, so sorry.”
Ms Holmes outlined a series of changes that had been made at the health board, some within weeks of Liliwen’s death.
These included major changes to the way pain relief is administered to women during both early and active labour.
Could have been alive today
Coroner Rachel Knight said the case was “nothing short of a tragedy” and it was clear that it had a “seismic impact on maternity care” in the health board.
In a statement, Lara Bennett, a solicitor representing Liliwen’s family, said: “While it is claimed that lessons have been learned, and changes have been implemented, this tragic case highlights concerns regarding understaffing on maternity wards and the absence of basic care and monitoring for mothers and babies at their most vulnerable.
“Had this been provided, Liliwen would not have suffered as she did and would be with her family today.
“It is imperative that the policy changes to maternity services implemented by Cardiff and Vale University Health Board as a direct result of this tragic event are adopted across all Welsh health boards.
“Liliwen’s death must not be in vain and the maternity care standards across Wales must be improved to ensure no mother or baby ever suffers in this way again.”
Daily nightmare
Emily and Rhodri say they have struggled psychologically in the aftermath of their ordeal.
The mum, who was studying to be a nurse at the time she had Liliwen, even opted against a career as a registered nurse due to the trauma she suffered on a hospital ward.
The couple welcomed their third child, a son named Ellis, in December 2024, but Emily says the grief from the loss of Liliwen continues to cast a shadow over the family’s lives.
“So many happy memories and special family moments are tinged with sadness,” she said.
“I dread family events and Christmas as Liliwen will never be there, she will always be the missing piece, her death should never have happened and that’s hard to live with.
“I look at the faces of my living children and long to know what Liliwen would look like now at two-and-a-half years old.
“I will never get over her death, I feel stuck in time. I will never be the same person again.
“Holding your child as they take their last breath, leaving them behind after their last ever cuddle, walking out of the hospital with an empty car seat, there are so many painful memories seared into my brain.
“I have lost my child; it’s every parent’s worst nightmare and we live the nightmare every single day.”
The couple are now pursuing a claim against Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, which manages University Hospital of Wales, supported by the law firm Slater and Gordon.
The hospital has been approached for comment.
Potential pregnancy and birth complications
Most pregnancies progress without a hitch, but some people may experience problems during birth.
Having early and regular midwife appointments helps diagnose, treat, or manage conditions before they become serious.
Here are some complications that may occur:
Vaginal bleeding: in most cases this isn’t caused by something serious it is very important to check it with your midwife or GP.
High blood pressure and pre-eclampsia: high blood pressure affects around 10 to 15 per cent of pregnancies. Pre-eclampsia can affect your baby’s growth. In mild pre-eclampsia, there may be no symptoms or signs. Rarely, the illness can develop into severe pre-eclampsia, which can be life threatening for you and your baby.
Obstetric cholestasis: this is rare and causes a build-up of bile acids in your body, which makes the skin very itchy but without a rash. The symptoms get better when your baby is born.
Gestational diabetes: this is diabetes that develops during pregnancy and affects up to 18 in 100 people in pregnancy.
Placenta previa: this happens when the placenta attaches in the lower part of the womb, sometimes completely covering the cervix. This can cause heavy bleeding during pregnancy or at the time of birth, meaning your baby will need to be born by C-section
Placenta accreta: this is a rare but serious condition when the placenta is stuck to the muscle of your womb and/or to nearby structures such as your bladder.
Infections: There is a small risk infections can pass on to babies during birth and cause complications. These can include Group B Strep, genital herpes and parvovirus
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT): this is a clot which can develop in the veins of your leg. A clot can also move to your lungs, and this is known as a pulmonary embolism (PE). Symptoms of this include chest pains and breathlessness. This is a serious condition, which can be life-threatening. There is an increased risk of DVT and PE in women who are, or have recently been, pregnant, and the risk increases after surgery.

WilkoWilko’s Verbena will bloom until October[/caption]
Hot weather can cause flowers to wilt and wither, even if you give them plenty of water to drink.
However, if you are looking for a hardy plant that will bloom in the driest of conditions, Wilko has a purse friendly solution.
The Verbena Festival Colours is a stunning flower, that will instantly add a splash of colour to your garden, with its purple red and white blooms.
The 30cm high plant can be placed in containers and borders and will attract an abundance of beautiful butterflies to your outdoor space.
Plus, the flower will bloom until October, turning your garden into a serene oasis all summer long.
Wilko said: “Beautiful and bright, the Verbena Festival Colours will surely delight any gardener.
“This plant yields a festival of bright, multi-coloured blooms that stand out in any setting.
“Ideal for containers and borders, it is known for attracting butterflies to make any outdoor area more appealing.“
Verbena plants thrive without much water as they have deep root systems, that can access water from lower soil levels.
They also have small leaves, which reduces water loss through transpiration, with some species even having water storing stems.
Verbena’s need six to eight hours of sunlight a day, so make sure to choose a location that is sunny and sheltered from the wind.
Make sure to water it regularly, and deadhead flowers to encourage more blooms.
More drought resistant plants
Lavender is another plant that is able to withstand extreme heat and dry conditions.
According to Hedge Express, lavender plants are able to develop deep root systems which allows them to access water from deeper soil levels.
How to encourage wildlife into your garden
THE Woodland Trust shared five top tips
1. Grow wild
Let nature take its course to create a more attractive environment for all things wild. You don’t have to leave your plot to develop into a small jungle – wildlife will thank you for just a small corner, border or planter.
2. Plant trees and shrubs
Research has shown that gardens are more attractive to wildlife if they have trees. And those trees can bring a host of other benefits too, from reducing noise and flooding to fighting climate change.
3. Create homes
If you want to attract a particular species, a ready-made home can look especially appealing to any wildlife passing through.
4. Offer a water source
Water is crucial for wildlife. Making some available in your garden could be a lifeline, especially in extreme weather.
5. Serve an extra meal
One of the best ways to persuade a plethora of wildlife to your patch is to give them access to an easy meal.
This means that they are able to access water that other plants can’t, making them better able to withstand drought than other species.
Lavender plants are also able to store water in their stems and leaves, and their leaves are covered in fine hairs, that help to reduce moisture loss.
