Stephen Kenny challenges St Pat’s to ‘fight to earn the right’ to succeed in Conference League amid LOI struggles
STEPHEN KENNY knows Europe means a narrower focus – but he still takes a wide angled view on it.
St Pat’s host Lithuanian side Hegelmann at Richmond Park tomorrow in the opening round of the Conference League looking to start another great European run.

But Kenny’s men are not going into Europe in the best of form having won just one in nine, and scored just once in their last six games.
It is a long way away from the end of last season when his team won nine in a row as they went from third from the bottom to third from the top to qualify for Europe.
And the Saints gaffer is realistic about what is ahead of his team.
He said: “It is interesting, for me, to see a team with full confidence, winning all their league games and winning in Europe, and then to see those levels drop off.
“If everything was perfect I would not have been brought in in the first place (last year). It didn’t look like much was wrong – we were flying – and we still had a lot of stuff to iron out.”
But having hit form last year in Europe when they reached the Conference League play-off round, Kenny hopes for a change of fortunes again in this year’s competition.
He added: “The players worked so hard last year to come up from third bottom, it just looked so unlikely at that stage.
“The reason we worked so hard to qualify for Europe is when you get there you want to make an impact.
“There’s no point in doing it and just getting knocked out, you have to show a level of ambition and we will have to fight hard over two legs to get through.”
And that means improving their form, and particular, their finishing with five blanks in their last six games a worry.
Kenny previously highlighted how his wingers have been nullified in the League of Ireland lately.
But he hopes a change of focus can help them flourish tomorrow even as the Richmond Park pitch is narrowed because of UEFA rules about run-off areas on the sidelines.
Kenny added: “I know it is a dying art, not many teams play with them now, in Ireland. We have Simon Power, who has hit a bit of form, which is great to see after his injury issues.
“He is very different. His raw pace, according to StatsSports’ measurement, is on par with Chiedozie Ogbene, so Simon is probably the quickest player in the league.
“Will the wingers get more of a chance to flourish in Europe? We don’t know, because this is a good team.
“I don’t think this is going to be us getting on the ball and having waves of attack. I think this will be… they are quite an attacking team and they’ll try to control a lot.
“We’ll have to really, really fight to earn the right. We have worked so hard to get there, so when you are in there you have to make it count.”
I interviewed Kamala Harris before election but it was so weird it was destroyed – I didn’t want blame for election loss
KAMALA Harris gave an interview before the election that was so “confusing and weird” it was immediately deleted, according to the social media personality who hosted it.
The then-Democratic nominee‘s appearance on “Subway Takes”, where guests admit their favourite hot take, would alone have lost her the election – so she and the host agreed to erase it.

Kareem Rahma, who hosts the series, has revealed he sat down with Kamala in summer last year, just months before November’s election.
He told Forbes in an interview posted to TikTok: “Her take was really confusing and weird, not good, and so [we] mutually agreed we shouldn’t publish it.”
Kareem claims the Democratic Party reached out to him to say that Kamala and Tim Walz, her vice-president running partner, were “really interested” in being on the show.
The presenter said he got “lucky”, because he “didn’t want to be blamed for her losing”.
Doubling down, Kareem said Kamala’s take was “really, really bad, and it didn’t make any sense”.
Finally putting viewers out of their misery, he revealed that Kamala’s take was “bacon as a spice”.
Kareem is a Muslim, meaning he can’t eat pork-based products and has never eaten bacon – making it a particularly odd choice for Kamala to go with.
Kareem previously showed footage of the awkward encounter to the New York Times – which reported he was “taken aback” by Kamala’s statement.
The newspaper reported that she pushed on with: “Think about it, it’s pure flavour.”
And it completely blind-sided the host.
Kareem revealed back in November to the NYT that the bacon-spice was not the hot take originally pitched by Kamala’s team.
The democrats said she would be taking aim at people who remove their shoes on aeroplanes.
So when the misplaced pork take came along, he was baffled.
Two senior campaign managers for Kamala said the topic of bacon had been previously raised with Kareem as a subject for the show, the paper reported, though the host and his manager refute this.
Harris’s campaign reportedly apologised for the blunder and offered to re-film the episode, but Kareem declined.
Kareem previously said his main reason for not airing the interview was because he didn’t want to upset the Muslim community by spending air time on trivial matters when something as serious as the Israel-Hamas war was ongoing.
He said: “It was so complicated because I’m Muslim and there’s something going on in the world that 100% of Muslims care about.
“And then they made it worse by talking about anchovies. Boring!”
Whilst Kamala’s interview never made it off the tape reel, Tim Walz’s was posted in August 2024.
He decided to talk about gutter maintenance.

‘It is terrible to see’ – 257 post offices close across Ireland in last 10 years amid can’t ‘ignore the crisis’ plea
SOME 257 post office have closed in the last ten years, with rural areas hit the hardest, new data has revealed.
Sinn Fein’s David Cullinane recently revealed the number of post office closures by county in the last decade.

According to the data, which the TD acquired through a parliamentary question, Cork suffered the largest number of closures at 34, with 22 offices located in urban areas and 12 located in rural areas.
Both Dublin and Galway saw 21 post offices close, followed by Donegal with 19, Mayo with 18 and Kerry/Wexford with 15.
Notably, 78 per cent of all closures were located in rural areas.
Speaking with RTE, Cullinane said: “It is shocking that 257 post offices closed in the last ten years.
“The local post office plays a vital role in Irish life, providing financial services, access to the social welfare system, communications infrastructure and community supports.
Adding that the Government “cannot continue to ignore the crisis in our post office network”.
He said: “What’s needed now is targeted, strategic investment, and a new vision that puts public service and community needs first.”
The figures come weeks after the Irish Postmasters Union published a report asking for a 50 per cent increase in State funding to €15 million per year over the next five years.
Speaking to an Oireachtas Committee, IPU General Secretary Sandra Tormey said: “Currently, we have 108 postmasters who, when we take all the costs out, are earning less than the minimum wage.
“Recently, I polled my members and if the Government funding stays the same – at €10 million – 40 per cent of them will have to close.”
She added: “If the Government funding becomes €15 million, 70 per cent of our postmasters say they can see a future for the next five years.
“We are looking for an uplift of €5 million. That is the difference between 40 per cent of post offices around the country closing or 70 per cent saying they have a future.”
in June, Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, Patrick O’Donovan said: “The Government is committed to a sustainable An Post and post office network as a key component of the economic and social infrastructure throughout Ireland.”
YOU’VE GOT MAIL?
He added: “An Post is a commercial State body with a mandate to act commercially. An Post has statutory responsibility for the State’s postal service and the post office network.
“Decisions relating to the network, including decisions relating to specific post offices are operational matters for the Board and management of the company and not one in which I, as Minister, have any function.”

Cork City starlet, 16, turns down pro contract to sign for Ligue 1 club that produced Kylian Mbappe and Thierry Henry
CORK CITY starlet David Dunne has signed for French Ligue 1 outfit AS Monaco.
Dunne, 16, turned down a professional deal at City to instead move abroad where he will join the Monaco academy that has nurtured the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Thierry Henry.

As he was on amateur, City are entitled to FIFA stipulated compensation – a five-figure sum – while Dunne’s schoolboy club Rockmount will also receive payment.
Dunne joined City’s academy in 2023 from Rockmount and has been in and around the first team this season making three substitute appearances.
Cork City Head of Academy, Liam Kearney, said: “David is a very exciting young player with a bright future ahead of him, which is underlined by the fact that he has already got first team minutes at such a young age.
“Of course, we would love to have kept him at the club, but he has decided to make the move to Monaco and we wish him every success.”
Top 8 hacks to help you sleep peacefully during hot weather — and why you should never take a cold shower
AS the UK swelters through one of the hottest starts to summer on record, with highs of 34°C scorching parts of England, many of us are finding it impossible to get a good night’s sleep.
And while a freezing cold shower might sound like the ultimate relief, sleep experts are warning that it could be doing you more harm than good.

Dr Sophie Bostock, a leading sleep specialist, explained the key to nodding off and staying asleep is by managing your body temperature.
Appearing on ITV’s This Morning, she said: “Our core temperature naturally drops in the evening, and that dip is what helps trigger sleep.
“But when the air around us is too warm, the body struggles to release heat, making it much harder to drift off.
“And even once we’re asleep, it tends to be lighter and less refreshing.”
She adds that hot nights not only reduce deep sleep, which restores the body, but also cut into REM sleep — the stage essential for processing emotions and memories.
“That’s why you often wake up feeling groggy, grumpy, and like you’ve barely slept.”
1. The “ideal” sleep temperature
The ideal temperature for sleep, she says, is somewhere between 15°C and 20°C — just cooler than a typical room.
But staying in that range during a heatwave takes a bit of strategy.
Older adults and those going through menopause are especially vulnerable to sleep disruption during hot weather.
“As we age, the body becomes less efficient at regulating temperature,” says Dr Bostock. “And anyone experiencing hot flushes or night sweats is likely to find them worse during extreme heat.”
Research also suggests that people with sleep apnoea may experience more severe symptoms in hot conditions.
2. Increase airflow
To make your bedroom more bearable, airflow is crucial. The expert added: “The goal is to create a breeze.
“If you can, sleep downstairs — heat rises, so ground floor rooms tend to stay cooler.
“Keep curtains or blinds closed during the day to block out sunlight, and open windows in the evening to let cooler air in.”
3. Stay hydrated
Staying hydrated is also key: “We cool ourselves through sweating, so drink regularly throughout the day to support that process.”
4. No cold showers
But whatever you do, avoid plunging into icy water before bed the Doctor said: “A cold shower gives your body a shock.
“Your blood vessels constrict, trapping heat inside instead of releasing it.
“A lukewarm shower is much better. It encourages blood flow to the skin, and as you step out and evaporate, it helps you cool down naturally.”
5. Swap your bedding
Swapping out your bedding can also help; ditch heavy duvets and opt for light sheets made from breathable, natural fibres like cotton or linen.
“Separate covers also help regulate individual temperatures if you share a bed,” she adds.
6. Try a homemade air-con unit
For extra relief, try using a fan alongside a bowl of ice water to circulate cooler air around the room.
Cooling mattress toppers and gel pillow inserts can also make a noticeable difference.
How to keep cool in hot weather
Most of us welcome hot weather, but when it's too hot, there are health risks. Here are three ways to keep cool according to the NHS...
Keep out of the heat if you can.
If you have to go outside, stay in the shade especially between 11am and 3pm, wear sunscreen, a hat and light clothes, and avoid exercise or activity that makes you hotter.
Cool yourself down.
Have cold food and drinks, avoid alcohol, caffeine and hot drinks, and have a cool shower or put cool water on your skin or clothes.
Keep your living space cool.
Close windows during the day and open them at night when the temperature outside has gone down. Electric fans can help if the temperature is below 35 degrees. Check the temperature of rooms, especially where people at higher risk live and sleep.
“They’re designed to absorb heat and prevent it building up around your body.”
7. Chill your forehead
A lesser-known trick is cooling the forehead. “There’s early research suggesting that applying coolness to the forehead can reduce brain activity, helping you wind down,” says Dr Bostock.
A chilled eye mask or a cold flannel can be surprisingly effective.
8. Descend into darkness
And don’t forget light. “To naturally produce melatonin — the hormone that makes us sleepy — you need darkness,” she says.
“Use an eye mask, especially if you’re trying to nap during the day.”
What about taking naps?
Speaking of naps, a short daytime rest can help if you’re feeling wiped out — but keep it brief.
“A 20 to 30-minute nap can be refreshing,” she advises. “Any longer and you risk making it harder to sleep at night.”
Above all, try to stay calm if you’re struggling to fall asleep. Stressing about it only makes it more difficult.
Focus on relaxing your body, keeping cool, and setting the right environment to support your natural sleep cycle.

Fugitive GUILTY of beating mum-of-six to death while he lived off-grid for 2yrs to avoid being jailed for attack on OAP
A FUGITIVE has been found guilty of beating a mum-of-six to death while he lived off-grid for two years to avoid jail for an attack on an OAP.
Roy Barclay subjected Anita Rose to “numerous kicks, stamps and blows” on her face, head and body.

The 57-year-old had been walking her dog Bruce when she was discovered on a path with bootmarks on her face.
At the time, Barclay, 56, was living in makeshift camps in the countryside and “wandering the fields and lanes”.
He had been “unlawfully at large” for two years and went on the run to avoid being recalled to prison following an attack on a pensioner in 2015.
Barclay has now been found guilty of murder following a trial at Ipswich Crown Court.
On July 24 last year, Anita left her home in Brantham, Suffolk, to walk Bruce “as she often did”.
The mum-of-six was found by passers-by after being subjected to a “vicious and brutal attack”, jurors were told.
Bruce’s lead was tightly wrapped around her ankle in a bid to stop the dog from “running off”.
Anita was rushed to hospital but died four days later after suffering injuries likened to a road traffic accident.
At the time, Barclay “lived mostly in the countryside, wandering the fields and lanes, sleeping in various makeshift camps”.
He was wanted by police after he caused grievous bodily harm with intent to an 82-year-old man in Walton-on-the-Naze, Essex, in 2015.
Prosecutor Christopher Paxton KC said: “In his mid-40s, he (Barclay) fractured nearly all of the bones of an 82-year-old’s face, having taken him to the ground in 2015.
“Anybody that attacks an 82-year-old man in that way displays a ruthlessness and callousness that defies logic.”
The court heard a pink jacket worn by Anita on the day she was attacked was found at one of Barclay’s makeshift camps.
Barclay kept the jacket “as a trophy” and it had his “semen on the neckline”, the prosecutor said.
His walking boots, which “amounted to the murder weapon”, were found at the same camp.
Police searching a different camp Barclay used discovered Anita’s phone case and her Samsung earbuds.
Mr Paxton said Barclay made various internet searches after the attack, including “how are outside objects swabbed for DNA”.
He continued: “Two very different worlds collided: Anita, partner to Richard, a mother and grandmother, out with the family dog Bruce, before she went off to work.
“Her world collided with Roy Barclay’s world, a desperate man on the run from police for two years, having been in prison for beating Leslie Gunfield’s face to a pulp.
“Roy Barclay took Anita Rose’s life in an explosion of violence.
“Blow after blow, stamp after stamp and kick after kick.
“Roy Barclay’s determination to keep his liberty and save his skin is revealed in the brutality of the injuries he inflicted on Anita Rose.
“Slight and slim Roy Barclay might seem, but his force, his brutality, is revealed in what he did to Leslie Gunfield and Anita Rose.”
Barclay will be sentenced on August 6.

Legendary car brand brings back another big name to the UK as it returns after a decade away
A LEGENDARY car brand is bringing back one of its big name vehicles to the UK after a decade-long break.
Mitsubishi has revealed the updated version of one of its models that will soon be returning to European markets.

The Mitsubishi Grandis was previously built from 2003 to 2011, and the Japanese automobile manufacturer has now unveiled its 2026 model.
It is arriving as an SUV crossover, that features Renault’s underbones and hybrid-only powertrain lineups.
History of the model
The Grandis was characteristically a compact multipurpose vehicle.
Its name derives from the Latin word meaning “large and impressive”.
This title was, and continues to be, used to symbolise the car’s large interior space and exterior design that has a commanding presence.
What to expect from the new model
The 2026 Grandis is announced to be a small-to-medium SUV sitting somewhere between the Renault Captur-based ASX and the Outlander.
As a result, the car will measure 4410mm long, 2000mm wide and 1580mm tall.
The interior includes Grandis’ portrait touchscreen multimedia system that can run Google Built-in, hosting a range of Google apps like Maps.

The lineup for launched in the European market will include mild hybrid (MHEV) and hybrid EV (HEV) models.
All versions have an electrified powertrain.
They will have a 1.3 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 12V mild-hybrid assistance, mated to either a manual transmission or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.
This will produce a total system output of 103kW.
A 1.8 litre petrol engine iin the other ‘full-hybrid’ powertrain option will enable the vehicle to produce 80kW.
Also included is a man 36kW electric motor and a secondary 15kW electric motor for a total system output of 115kW.
Electric motors contain a 1.4kWh lithium-ion battery pack.
When it will come?
Mitsubishi Motors in Europe is expected to begin a sequential launch of its all-new Grandis compact SUV for the market this year.
The new model will be manufactured at Renault’s plant in Valladolid, Spain, set to start production from the fourth quarter of 2025.

The revival of the Grandis comes after Mitisushi also brought back some other old names like the Colt compact hatchback, and ASX compact SUV.
Tricky number sequence question on The 1% Club wipes out 17 players – but would you have got it right?
A NUMBER sequence question wiped out a total of 17 people on The 1% Club in a shock result.
A large number of people were left rattled by the 70% question which was all about identifying a missing number.

Lee Mack posed the question to the group in order to see who would be able to make it through to the next round.
They were all hoping they could make it all the way to the end and pick up a share of £100,000.
Appearing rather simple, the question read: “Here is a range of numbers from 1 to 61. What is the missing number?”
Every number up to 61, bar one, were then listed and all typed out in an assortment of different colours.
30 seconds were then placed on the clock with the contestants aiming to find which number had disappeared.
But it seemed that it wasn’t enough time for everyone as 17 of them failed to get it correct.
Lee then quipped: “That was quite a lot of you, we have lost 17 there.”
The correct answer was then revealed to be 29.
Eagle-eyed viewers and quizzers would have noticed that the numbers jumped straight from 28 up to 30.
It proved that 17 people were unable to correctly spot the missing number.
It comes after another question on the show wiped out 32 players.
Lee posed a question which was all about identifying which statement had to be false.
The star said: “Which of these would it be impossible to do?”
He then read aloud the three options.
These were – “marry your cousin’s cousin”, “marry your brother’s widow” or ” marry your widow’s sister”.
32 got it wrong but as the correct answer was revealed to be that it would be impossible to marry your own widow’s sister as you would already be dead.
Hardest Quiz Show Questions
Would you know the answers to some of quizzing TV's hardest questions
- Who Wants To Be A Millionaire – Earlier this year, fans were left outraged after what they described as the “worst” question in the show’s history. Host Jeremy Clarkson asked: “From the 2000 awards ceremony onwards, the Best Actress Oscar has never been won by a woman whose surname begins with which one of these letters?” The multiple choice answers were between G, K, M and W. In the end, and with the £32,000 safe, player Glen had to make a guess and went for G. It turned out to be correct as Nicole Kidman, Frances McDormand and Kate Winslet are among the stars who have won the Best Actress gong since 2000.
- The 1% Club – Viewers of Lee Mack’s popular ITV show were left dumbfounded by a question that also left the players perplexed. The query went as follows: “Edna’s birthday is on the 6th of April and Jen’s birthday falls on the 15th of October, therefore Amir’s birthday must be the ‘X’ of January.” It turns out the conundrum links the numbers with its position in the sentence, so 6th is the sixth word and 15th is the fifteenth word. Therefore, Amir’s birthday is January 24th, corresponding to the 24th word in the sentence.
- The Chase – The ITV daytime favourite left fans scratching their heads when it threw up one of the most bizarre questions to ever grace the programme. One of the questions asked the player: “Someone with a nightshade intolerance should avoid eating what?” The options were – sweetcorn, potatoes, carrots – with Steve selecting sweetcorn but the correct answer was potatoes.
