Extra €1k cost in ‘sucker punch’ for 90k Irish as Govt accused of ‘adding fuel to fire’ amid college fee reduction calls

THE government has been accused of delivering a “sucker punch” to Irish students, ahead of a plan which will see a extra €1,000 cost in college fees.

Minister for Further and Higher Education, James Lawless, recently announced plans to scrap the cost-of-living reduction to third-level fees.

The reduction, which amounted to €1,000, was created to support students financially throughout the cost-of-living crisis.

Its subsequent removal means fees will return to previous levels, increasing by €1,000 from last year.

Sinn Fein TD Mairead Farrell has condemned the action, calling it a “betrayal” she believes students and parents won’t forget.

Farrell said: “Minister for Higher Education, James Lawless, sent real fear through households last Sunday when he said fees would go up by €1,000 because there was no cost-of-living package in this year’s budget.

“This was the last thing students and their parents needed or expected to hear.”

She added: “This is a sucker punch to families that have simply not planned or budgeted for an extra €1,000 for every student.”

And that: “This will impact over 90,000 students across the state, and for many, will mean the difference between going to college or not.

Her comments come following a motion by Sinn Fein in the Dail this week.

The motion, which coincided with a student and joint opposition protest outside Leinster House, called on the government to introduce a cost-of-living package which would cancel the scheduled €1,000 fee hike and reduces fees by a further €500.

It also called for student fees to be permanently abolished within within two years.

COLLEGE COSTS

Speaking with Newstalk Breakfast, Union of Students in Ireland President Chris Clifford described the situation as “absolutely shocking”.

He said: “Last year, our expectation was that the €1,000 reduction in the contribution was going to remain and it was going to be permanent,

“It feels like we’re going backwards, to be honest.”

Despite these concerns, Minister Lawless remains resolute that third-level students will pay €1,000 extra in fees this year compared to last year.

Speaking with RTE, Lawless explained that last year’s €1,000 was part of a one-time cost-of-living package and that now fees will have to be reset to the level they were at for the last several years.

He added: “All of us in any walk of life have to play the hands were dealt”.

Now, the 37-year-old is aiming to prove art and football are similar, working with artists to show how both ventures are used as forms of communication and as ways to bring people together.

Household names including former Manchester United star Eric Cantona and Red Devils and Lionesses midfielder Ella Toone are on board for the project called ‘Football City, Art United’.

Each player has their own individual piece in the exhibition, and Mata feels each person working with him on the project had or still has an artistic way of expressing themselves on the pitch.

Mata, who now plays for Australian A-League Western Sydney Wanderers, told BBC Sport: “One player that was an artist on the pitch, it has to be Eric Cantona. So I’m very glad he accepted, he loved it and he’s very much involved in everything we do.

“Shinji [Kagawa], who is a good friend and has a very unique piece with an artist in Japan, where he’s from.”

Former Juventus midfielder Edgar Davids is also involved.

Mata made 278 Premier League appearances during his time with Chelsea and then Manchester United.

The ex-Spain international won two Europa Leagues, two FA Cups and one League Cup with the top flight sides.

He then left Old Trafford and England in 2022, but is now back in Manchester to open his new exhibition to the city’s people.

“I’m really excited for the people of Manchester to come and see it,” he said.

“It doesn’t matter if you don’t like football, or if you don’t like art, but I think this is the best of both worlds and hopefully it will bring a lot of joy to everyone.”

I can’t go to work & am scared to move from the loo because of Mounjaro… but people say it’s down to WHERE I’m injecting

A MOUNJARO user has claimed that after 19 weeks of injecting, she is “too scared to move away from the toilet” as a result of her side effects.

Maddy, who has lost 40lbs [2 stone 8lbs] since using the weight loss jabs, is now unable to go to work as a result of suffering from diarrhoea

Posting on social media, the content creator got candid on her Mounjaro side effects, leaving many open-mouthed.

As she stood in her bathroom, she confirmed that after injecting herself with Mounjaro, which is known as the King Kong of jabs, in her arm, she was very “poorly.”

Not only did she feel sick, but she also had diarrhoea and sulphur burps too.

Despite this, Maddy confirmed that last Tuesday, she decided to inject in her arm again.

But by Wednesday afternoon, she noticed the re-emergence of sulphur burps – which have been described by many as foul-tasting burps that taste like eggs.

And that wasn’t all, as Maddy continued: “And I know what comes hand-in-hand with sulphur burps – it’s the s***s.”

So it didn’t come as a surprise when Maddy woke up the following morning with an upset stomach, as she admitted: “I felt rough, but not too bad – I still went to work and then towards the end of the day at work, I felt like s**t, I literally went and slept in my car for half an hour because I just felt rough.”

Upon returning home from work, Maddy then slept from 5:30pm until 11pm.

After waking up, the brunette beauty had some dinner and went back to bed, but it wasn’t long before more side effects started, as she confessed: “My belly felt so bubbly and gassy…Woke up two or three times in the night with the s***s and I actually did s**t myself.

“If you’re on Mounjaro, then you know, if you’re not, you won’t understand, so after that I thought, I’m not going to work today, I’m not even going to risk it. It’s not worth it at work.”

Not only this, but she also revealed: “I’ve been too scared to move away from the toilet all morning because I still feel like s**t.”

The TikTok clip, which was posted under the username @mjwithmad, has clearly left many open-mouthed, as it has quickly racked up 56,100 views, 892 likes and 118 comments.

My belly felt so bubbly and gassy

Maddy

But Maddy isn’t the only Mounjaro user to be experiencing such horrendous side effects, as many others flocked to the comments to share their similar experiences.

One person said: “These sulphur burps are something else! I’m week three and I jabbed my arm yesterday. I feel dreadful!”

Another added: “Did my first injection in my belly last week was fine, did my arm yesterday and today I feel so tired and sluggish, lost half a stone in a week though!”

A third commented: “Not me seeing this video one day after I decided to jab in my arm for the first time. Now I’m scared.”

Your choice of injection site can affect the side effects that you can experience when taking Mounjaro

Jason Murphy

Whilst one woman claimed: “Girl, this is so so common on Mounjaro!! More common than I’d like to admit.”

Meanwhile, someone else wrote: “I was looking forward to trying my arm but now I’m not so sure.”

Everything you need to know about fat jabs

Weight loss jabs are all the rage as studies and patient stories reveal they help people shed flab at almost unbelievable rates, as well as appearing to reduce the risk of serious diseases.

Wegovy – a modified version of type 2 diabetes drug Ozempic – and Mounjaro are the leading weight loss injections used in the UK.

Wegovy, real name semaglutide, has been used on the NHS for years while Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a newer and more powerful addition to the market.

Mounjaro accounts for most private prescriptions for weight loss and is set to join Wegovy as an NHS staple this year.

How do they work?

The jabs work by suppressing your appetite, making you eat less so your body burns fat for energy instead and you lose weight.

They do this my mimicking a hormone called GLP-1, which signals to the brain when the stomach is full, so the drugs are officially called GLP-1 receptor agonists.

They slow down digestion and increase insulin production, lowering blood sugar, which is why they were first developed to treat type 2 diabetes in which patients’ sugar levels are too high.

Can I get them?

NHS prescriptions of weight loss drugs, mainly Wegovy and an older version called Saxenda (chemical name liraglutide), are controlled through specialist weight loss clinics.

Typically a patient will have to have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, classifying them as medically obese, and also have a weight-related health condition such as high blood pressure.

GPs generally do not prescribe the drugs for weight loss.

Private prescribers offer the jabs, most commonly Mounjaro, to anyone who is obese (BMI of 30+) or overweight (BMI 25-30) with a weight-related health risk.

Private pharmacies have been rapped for handing them out too easily and video calls or face-to-face appointments are now mandatory to check a patient is being truthful about their size and health.

Are there any risks?

Yes – side effects are common but most are relatively mild.

Around half of people taking the drug experience gut issues, including sickness, bloating, acid reflux, constipation and diarrhoea.

Dr Sarah Jarvis, GP and clinical consultant at patient.info, said: “One of the more uncommon side effects is severe acute pancreatitis, which is extremely painful and happens to one in 500 people.”

Other uncommon side effects include altered taste, kidney problems, allergic reactions, gallbladder problems and hypoglycemia.

Evidence has so far been inconclusive about whether the injections are damaging to patients’ mental health.

Figures obtained by The Sun show that, up to January 2025, 85 patient deaths in the UK were suspected to be linked to the medicines.

What do the experts say?

After numerous fat jab users complaining of similar side effects following injecting Mounjaro, which is said to suppress the appetite, into their arms, we spoke to the experts to get their thoughts on why this might be happening.

Jason Murphy, Head of Pharmacy at Chemist4U told Fabulous: “Your choice of injection site can affect the side effects that you can experience when taking Mounjaro

“In a clinical trial, it was revealed that the overall percentage of participants who experienced side effects varied considerably – abdomen: 68.52%, upper arm: 57.41% and thigh: 43.40%.”

There’s no universally ‘best’ site to inject – just the one that works best for you

Kiran Jones

Not only this, but Roj Helin Parlakyildiz, a Clinician and Clinical Content Lead at Voy, shared: “While the pharmacokinetics of subcutaneous injections like Mounjaro are generally consistent across approved sites (abdomen, thigh, upper arm), local absorption can still vary slightly based on factors like blood flow, fat distribution, and muscular activity in those areas. This may influence how quickly the medication is absorbed.

“For example, the upper arm may have less subcutaneous fat and more variable injection depth compared to the abdomen or thigh, especially if the injection technique is less controlled, as the upper arm can be an awkward site.

“This might lead to faster absorption, potentially triggering more acute gastrointestinal side effects like sulphur burps or diarrhoea in sensitive individuals.”

Meanwhile, Clinical pharmacist Kiran Jones of Oxford Online Pharmacy also said to us: “While the injection site doesn’t theoretically have much influence on side effects experienced, some users consistently report more nausea with stomach injections.

What are the other side effects of weight loss jabs?

Like any medication, weight loss jabs can have side effects.

Common side effects of injections such as Ozempic include:

Nausea: This is the most commonly reported side effect, especially when first starting the medication. It often decreases over time as your body adjusts.

Vomiting: Can occur, often in conjunction with nausea.

Diarrhea: Some people experience gastrointestinal upset.

Constipation: Some individuals may also experience constipation.

Stomach pain or discomfort: Some people may experience abdominal pain or discomfort.

Reduced appetite: This is often a desired effect for people using Ozempic for weight loss.

Indigestion: Can cause a feeling of bloating or discomfort after eating.

Serious side effects can also include:

Pancreatitis: In rare cases, Ozempic may increase the risk of inflammation of the pancreas, known as pancreatitis, which can cause severe stomach pain, nausea, and vomiting.

Kidney problems: There have been reports of kidney issues, including kidney failure, though this is uncommon.

Thyroid tumors: There’s a potential increased risk of thyroid cancer, although this risk is based on animal studies. It is not confirmed in humans, but people with a history of thyroid cancer should avoid Ozempic.

Vision problems: Rapid changes in blood sugar levels may affect vision, and some people have reported blurry vision when taking Ozempic.

Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar): Especially if used with other medications like sulfonylureas or insulin.

“We’ve heard similar things from our patients, though we think this feedback is due to small individual differences like body fat distribution, blood flow, skin thickness and personal sensitivity. These can all subtly affect how your body responds, even if the absorption is technically the same.

“At the moment, science hasn’t quite caught up with this phenomenon. But just because it isn’t fully explained doesn’t mean it isn’t happening.”

As a result, this pharmacist stressed the importance of rotating injection sites, as he added: “If you notice more side effects in one area, try a different site next time. Keep a log of your symptoms and discuss any patterns with your pharmacist or healthcare provider.

“There’s no universally ‘best’ site to inject – just the one that works best for you.”

A BRITISH university student’s death uncovered a string of suicides across the world that involved buying lethal but legal substances online.

The investigations began after university student Tom Parfett died alone in a Premier Inn room after buying and using the poison often found on suicide forums.

Police in Canada have arrested and charged one man, Kenneth Law, with first-degree murder and aiding suicide in connection with providing the product to people in Ontario.

But after Tom’s father, David and The Times investigated further they found an eerily similar pattern of deaths using the same method in the UK, US, Canada, Germany and Australia.

Samantha Anstiss, from Wonderhood studios which produced the documentary, said: “This urgent and powerful series is testimony to the bravery of bereaved families determined to prevent further deaths and stop young people from being preyed upon online.”

Who is Kenneth Law?

Kenneth Law is a 59-year-old Canadian from Ontario.

He holds degrees in industrial engineering from the University of Toronto, management science from the University of Waterloo and an MBA from York University.

Mr Law began as an aerospace engineer before he became a chef working at a five-star hotel in Toronto called the Fairmont Royal York.

It was there where he allegedly ran a sideline business selling poison online to people who wanted to take their own lives.

What has he been alleged to have done?

Law has been charged with 14 counts of first-degree murder and 14 of counselling or aiding suicide relating to 14 Canadian victims[/caption]

The 59-year-old was arrested by police in Canada in May 2023, after The Times had published a piece revealing the findings of their investigation.

Canadian police allege he sent 1,209 packages to 41 countries but cannot say how many contained poison.

The UK’s National Crime Agency has connected Law to 99 deaths in Britain.

Mr Law was originally charged with two counts of counselling or aiding suicide, but this has now been upgraded to 28 counts, including 14 of first-degree murder and 14 of counselling or aiding suicide relating to 14 Canadian victims.

Under Canadian law, first-degree murder is defined as being the deliberate and planned killing of another person.

All of the charges are linked to the deaths of people from across Ontario, aged 16 to 36.

He is intending to plead not guilty.

When is he to stand trial?

Mr Law is set to stand trial for all 28 charges in January 2026.

The trial was scheduled initially for autumn 2025 but prosecutors requested the Supreme Court of Canada give an opinion on whether assisting suicide can be charged as murder.

This request is why the trial has been delayed until the start of next year.

Mr Law is currently in prison awaiting trial. If convicted, he faces imprisonment for life with no possibility of parole for 25 years.

Andy Farrell sounds increasingly worried as headaches mount for British & Irish Lions with Australia Test looming

BLAIR KINGHORN gave Lions boss Andy Farrell another injury headache with nine days to go before the first Test.

Farrell admitted to being in the dark about the Scotland full-back’s chances of facing Australia a week on Saturday after he injured his left knee against the Brumbies.

Kinghorn, 28, was crocked just nine minutes into the five-try win, had treatment and then went down again on 25 minutes. That forced Farrell to replace him.

Gutted, Kinghorn punched the ground in frustration before hobbling down the tunnel.

It leaves Farrell with another selection poser at No 15 with Ireland’s Hugo Keenan struggling against Waratahs last weekend after missing games through injury and illness, and England’s Elliot Daly already back home with a broken arm.

Kinghorn’s replacement, the versatile Englishman Marcus Smith, was among those to score tries along with Ireland trio James Lowe, Garry Ringrose and Josh van der Flier.

The Lions flew to Adelaide this morning ahead of Saturday’s game with an Invitational XV made up of Aussies and New Zealanders.

Asked if he feared the worst on his latest crock, Farrell said: “No, not at the moment.

“He got a bang on the knee, he carried on for quite a bit but there was no need to keep him going. He is being assessed so we will see how he comes through that.

“It is late, we have got an early flight in the morning and I don’t know what the medical plan is but we will get on top of that.”

Smith scored a try and made another but he might not be an ideal pick at 15 against the Wallabies’ high- ball tactics.

Farrell added: “Marcus had some really nice touches as the second fly-half as far as game control is concerned. He did well there and he’s dangerous with the ball in hand so it’s good learnings for him.”

Farrell could call up Scotland’s Tom Jordan or Freddie Steward of England but will be keeping his fingers crossed for Kinghorn because he needs all the quality he can get.

Australia boss Joe Schmidt was in the Canberra crowd and could be seen smiling.

On Sunday, after edging out Fiji 21-18, the former Ireland chief said he had no confidence his side could beat the Lions.

But he might now after watching what appeared to be their likely Test team concede four tries, lose the battle at the breakdown, the aerial war and look disjointed in attack and defence.

Ollie Chessum, starting at flanker and finishing at lock, fly-half Finn Russell and skipper Maro Itoje were the pick of the Lions.

But Tom Curry, Tommy Freeman and Ireland’s Bundee Aki may sweat over their Test prospects. They led 19-10 at the break. Chessum. Lowe and Smith all crossed the line.

Ringrose went over after the break but they could not shake off Brumbies, missing eight Wallabies, until Van der Flier’s try.

Farrell added: “We left three tries out there, maybe more. They were good enough to capitalise on some of our errors. We have plenty to do.”
