Inside Ruth Jones’ marriage breakup from affair that started relationship to ex-husband’s look-a-like lover in Canada

THEIR relationship began in scandal – and now, 26 years later, it seems it’s ended the same way.

After Gavin & Stacey star Ruth Jones, 58, confirmed her shock split from husband David Peet, 71, rumours are swirling that he left her for another woman – one who, awkwardly, could pass for Ruth’s double.

The TV producer is now living thousands of miles away in a quiet Canadian town with new partner Jayne Charity Cook, while Ruth has relocated from Cardiff to London to focus on her ever-flourishing career.

Fans are convinced Ruth hinted at her heartbreak in her recent Sunday Times bestseller, By Your Side, which follows Linda – a curvy, teetotal woman in her 50s – whose husband runs off with another woman to open a café in Spain.

While promoting the novel at the Bath Literary Festival in May, where she was notably without her wedding ring, Ruth admitted Linda was based on her.

Tellingly, she described how the fictional husband’s fling with a colleague finally ended a long but lacklustre marriage.

“It was never a really great big romantic marriage,” she told the audience. “They got on fine. They had a good sex life but that was kind of it.

“They were good friends. When he (the husband) went off with Denise at his place of work, and ran off to run a cafe in Spain called Doolallies, she was quite happy to see him go.”

It’s hard not to draw parallels with Ruth’s real-life split.

In a recent statement, she confirmed she and David went their separate ways 18 months ago, “amicably,” and insisted they remain “good friends.”

Since then, Ruth’s star has only risen. She’s just scooped a BAFTA for her much-loved role as Nessa, topped the book charts, and is filming a gripping Netflix thriller Run Away, alongside Cold Feet actor James Nesbitt.

Meanwhile, David has swapped showbiz for small-town life – and a new romance out of the spotlight.

Jayne went public with David in April, updating her profile picture to a loved-up snap of the pair. She also shared photos on Threads, writing: “Spent the weekend with my love and had an amazing time.”

Describing herself as a “MommaBear, great Friend, Lover, Partner, Daughter, Sister,” she has two adult children – Alexander and Isabella – and is a proud grandmother to their three kids.

She has worked as an Education Assistant at the Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw School on the Tsulquate Reserve since 2016.

While it’s unclear exactly when – or how – Jayne met David, he’s believed to have moved to Canada several months ago.

“It’s a bold move across the Atlantic,” a source said. “But David saw it as a new chapter in his life and an exciting opportunity he couldn’t ignore.”

Their split came as a shock to industry insiders, who remember Ruth first meeting David in the early ’90s while working on a BBC Wales pilot.

Affairs cause a lot of pain – they’re not something one aspires to do

Ruth

According to Ruth, it was “love at first voice” after hearing him on the phone before meeting in person.

“He has a very sharp mind combined with a dry Yorkshire wit, making him a naturally funny man,” she later commented.

Their relationship began while David’s previous marriage was coming to an end – something Ruth has since spoken about openly.

“Affairs cause a lot of pain – they’re not something one aspires to do,” she previously said. “You don’t aspire to cause pain to people in their life.”

Their romance triggered the divorce from the mother of his three children, Louise, Alex and Fiona, all now in their 30s, who Ruth remains close to.

The pair tied the knot in 1999 and went onto work with each other again, co-creating her Sky comedy Stella, in which she plays the title character – a struggling single mother – which ran for 58 episodes from 2012.

The former couple used to split their time between their two properties in Cardiff and the Scottish Highlands, where they own a holiday home.

Despite their strong union, they never had any biological kids together – with Ruth admitting she never had a strong desire to be a mother.

“It just didn’t happen,” she once said.  “It wasn’t a decision. I don’t have a burning desire to have babies.

“I think it’s heartbreaking if you do and you find out you can’t have them. I love being a stepmum – all the joys of motherhood without the pain of childbirth.”

‘Teenage angst’

Despite not being particularly maternal, Ruth was a natural stepmother.

“You take things as they come,” she admitted. “There wasn’t a moment when I thought, ‘I’ve become a stepmum now’.”

She has always spoken fondly of her stepkids and expressed excitement about the possibility of becoming a step-grandmother one day.

“We never had any difficulty with teenage angst,” she recalled. “And now I’m looking forward to becoming a step-grandmother at some point.”

Their split follows the much-anticipated 2024 Gavin & Stacey Christmas Special, where Ruth’s beloved character Nessa finally tied the knot with her longtime love Smithy, played by co-writer James Corden.

The episode – fittingly titled The Finale – marked the end of the hit series, pulling in a massive 12.3 million viewers.

Ruth and David had previously collaborated on the 2009 Gavin & Stacey Christmas Special.

Ruth’s portrayal of the straight-talking Welsh legend Nessa earned her a BAFTA for Best Female Performance in a Comedy this May –  and while she collected the award barefoot, she was still wearing her wedding ring at the ceremony.

But she failed to mention husband David in her acceptance speech. Instead, she paid a heartfelt tribute to the Gavin & Stacey cast and crew, singling out her co-writer James Corden, saying: “I love you, James. I love writing with you – and long may it continue.”

Ruth and James have co-written a memoir due out in October titled Gavin and Stacey and Everything in Between.

“It’s really the story of our friendship,” Ruth told Lorraine. “We’ve been close for 25 years now. He’s one of my best friends. I adore that man and love being in a room with him – so hopefully we’ll write more together.”

James and Ruth’s friendship goes way back – the pair first met while working on Teachers and Fat Friends back in 2001. James has spoken just as fondly of Ruth, once describing her as someone he “loves more than you could ever imagine.”

While Ruth insists her and David remain “good friends”, insiders wonder if they’ll continue to work together.

Although Ruth says she and David are still “good friends,” it’s unclear whether they’ll continue to work together professionally.

David, a TV producer and Ruth’s former business partner at Tidy Productions, has played a key role in many of her projects over the years. He’s worked on Gavin & Stacey, Stella,

The Great Outdoors, and the festive film A Child’s Christmases in Wales. He also served as an executive producer and writer on Gavin & Stacey, and was behind Ruth’s one-off specials, including Ruth Jones’ Christmas Cracker (2010), Easter Treat, and Summer Holiday (2011).

In 2019, Ruth told Radio 4’s Desert Island Disc how she prefers staying at home than attending glitzy showbiz events.

She also recalled her meeting with Barack Obama at a dinner at Downing Street in 2013 and how he’s a fan of the Welsh accent.

She told how he was particularly charmed by Jones’s tendency at the time to say “Brill-iant” and stick her thumbs in the air.

“I went very Welsh. I went ‘Hiya!’ and shook hands with him,” she told presenter Lauren Laverne. “I said ‘Can I just say? Congratulations! Brill-iant!’

“And he shook hands with me and then leaned down and said: ‘I really need to learn how to say that – brill-iant!’.”

While David settles into his new life in a quiet town in Canada, Ruth is busy filming her new Netflix thriller, Run Away – the latest Harlan Coben novel to be adapted for the screen.

She stars alongside Cold Feet actor James Nesbitt in the gripping new series, and it could mark a fresh chapter for Ruth – both on and off screen – as we’re about to see a very different side to her.

“I’ve been playing a private investigator and I’ve really enjoyed it – it’s so different,” she says.

New role, new career direction… perhaps even a new man too, Ruth?

I’m a fashion expert – I’ve found seven summer dresses that hide bingo wings… and they’re not frumpy

BINGO wings beware – the high street has gone sleeveless mad.

And if, like me, you don’t love your upper arms, that’s seriously bad news.

Cream satin floral twist front maxi dress, £56, River Island[/caption]

I know I’m not alone, either. When I ranted about this in the office, there was a chorus of agreement.

Not because we’re all body-conscious, but because — shock horror — some of us want to wear real clothes to places other than a beach.

On TikTok, clips showing exercises to eliminate bingo wings have hundreds of thousands of likes. And I’m not surprised.

At the age of 35, it’s quite common for women my age — and older — to feel self-conscious about their arms.

Over-50s fitness influencer Nikki Brow amasses more than 560k views on TikTok for her “Menopause ladies” videos to banish bingo wings. And #armworkout videos have more than 4.5 billion views on the social media platform.

But trying to find anything to cover our upper arms this summer is a relentless task.

As someone who spends an unhealthy amount of time trawling the rails of the high street (it’s my job, after all), I recently found myself storming through Zara in London’s Oxford Street, wondering if the designers had collectively lost the plot — or just stopped believing in sleeves.

Everywhere I turned it was strappy slip dresses, halterneck beachwear pretending to be occasionwear, and sequinned numbers clearly aimed at women who treat the club loos as a selfie booth.

And sleeves? Nowhere to be found.

There was one long-sleeved dress and, plot twist, it had no back.

Brilliant. So now I’ve got to shell out again for a stick-on-bra and rolls of duct tape to keep everything in its rightful place. But it’s not just Zara, either.

Unless your upper arms resemble Michelle Obama’s, your options are: repeat-wear something from last year, or whip out the sewing kit.

And spare me the body-positivity speeches. “Just go sleeveless,” they say, or “Embrace your arms — no one cares”.

Well, I care when I catch sight of my reflection in a shop window and see the glaring sight of a wide arm.

I want sleeves. Not cap sleeves (a con), not flutter sleeves (cute but pointless), but sleeves that actually cover the upper arm.

But never fear, I’ve done the legwork (or the arm work) and found the best sleeved summer dresses that tick all the right boxes.

Because fashion should make you feel good and for some of us, that means keeping our arms under wraps.

EMPIRE LINE

Red, Next, £36

Empire line, with a seam and fitted under the bust, is flattering on everyone, from fuller busts to fuller middles.

This number from Next in bold red and accented sleeves is perfect for summer.

EVERY OCCASION WEAR

Multi, River Island, £56

No one wants to splash out on a statement dress that will only see you through one wedding, or an annual trip to the races.

You want a dress that’s value for money and that you can wear all season.

River Island’s long-sleeved midaxi does just that.

A knotted waist and slightly padded shoulders enhance an hourglass figure, while the busy print is disguising without being too loud.

BOLD PRINT

Floral, H&M, £27.99

Ditsy florals have a habit of ageing us, whereas bolder colours and prints inject life into our outfits, like this button-down H&M dress.

This is summer in a frock. With its pretty-yet-punchy pattern and elegant length, it’s the non-frumpy floral dress we’ve been waiting for. Wear it on a Sunday stroll, or for a day at the races.

BARGAIN BOHO

Boho has made a triumphant return to fashion this year, but while most of us over 25 can’t bear the thought of wearing disc belts and a mini dress, this embodies the trend without looking like 1970s fancy dress.

Slight ruffled detailing gives depth, while breaking up the floral print. And a V-neckline is flattering for fuller busts.

SHIRT DRESS

Green, George at Asda, £38

Create a defined silhouette with a classic shirt dress. This one has a slightly puffed sleeve that gives it an expensive feel.

In a deep, verdant green, it also creates a bold look with zero effort and can be dressed up with metallic accessories for holidays and weddings, or dressed down with your favourite Birkenstocks for everyday wear.

Rory McIlroy shines with six birdies at Travelers Championship while Jordan Spieth battles through visible injury

RORY MCILROY maintained his resurgence after his low final round-of-the-day at last week’s US Open.

The Northern Irishman carded a flawless opening round of six-under-par 64 at the Travelers Championship in Connecticut.

Jordan Spieth was visibly injured during his round but attempted to battle on

Fresh off a final-round 67 at the US Open, McIlroy carried that momentum into the low-scoring TPC River Highlands track.

The Masters champions carded six birdies to sit tied-second midway through Day 1.

He is two shots behind early leader Aaron Eckroat, who carded a stunning – career best – round of 65 to hold the clubhouse lead.

McIlroy was joined in the clubhouse at six-under by his US Ryder Cup captain playing partner Keegan Bradley, and 2023 US Open champion Wyndham Clark.

Cameron Young sits one back on five-under, while a packed group at four-under includes Viktor Hovland, Tommy Fleetwood, and Jason Day.

Jordan Spieth pulled up during his round with an injury, the three-time major winner clearly in discomfort after the 6th hole of his opening round.

He followed up on the 7th – but wailed in pain after his tee shot – as he attempts to solider on as he remains on course at time of publish.

Many of the afternoon starters have just teed off on the east coast of the United States with the tee times later than usual for the final Signature event of the season.

The Travelers purse is $20 million, with $3.6 million going to the winner in addition to 700 FedEx Cup points.

There is no cut at the Travelers Championship. All 72 players will play all four rounds.

All the action is live on Sky Sports Golf.

Kim Woodburn’s family hit back at former co-star Aggie MacKenzie after ‘hurtful’ comments about ‘fight’ with late star

KIM Woodburn’s family has hit back at her former co-star Aggie MacKenzie following comments she made after the TV star’s death.

Earlier this week, it was revealed that Celebrity Big Brother star Kim had died aged 83 after a short illness.

The TV personality rose to fame on Channel 4’s hit series How Clean is Your House? alongside Aggie, and her co-star spoke out this week following her death.

Kim’s family called Aggie’s comments “hurtful” after she recalled an argument the pair had to The Mirror.

Aggie told the paper that she and Kim fell out in 2008 after they had a disagreement backstage of a pantomime production.

Aggie then alleged that Kim pushed her and she fell over.

A friend of Kim’s husband Peter told The Sun: “Peter is very hurt and upset that Aggie has used Kim’s death as an opportunity to put herself back out there in public domain.

“A lot of things that Aggie has said are untrue.

“Recollections may vary.”

They went on: “Kim was asked in interview many times about Aggie but kept a dignified silence out of respect for the great work they did together.

“Kim’s friends and family find it upsetting that she couldn’t do the same since Kim’s passing.”

Kim and Aggie hosted How Clean is Your House? from 2003 to 2009.

One year before the series ended, the pair starred as the Ugly Sisters in pantomime Cinderella in Brighton.

Speaking to The Mirror, Aggie claimed the alleged shove “blew up” their friendship.

She said: “She [Kim] went off to her dressing room and she was crying her eyes out.

“She was really upset and I was really upset – I was so furious.”

Mum-of-two warns Brit tourists after Benidorm hotel room raided by teen thugs as her kids watched on in horror

A MUM-of-two has issued a warning to tourists after her hotel room was raided by thugs.

Brit Becca Farley, 27, warned tourists to “keep your wits about you” after suffering a horror ordeal while holidaying at a Spanish tourist hotspot.

Two thieves tried to rob the Brit’s hotel room[/caption]

Becca was staying at Magical Tropical Splash in Benidorm with her partner, six-year-old son and 11-year-old daughter when her room was raided by thugs.

The mother caught the strangers entering her room on the last night of the family’s £2,500 week-long holiday.

With signs put up around the hotel warning of a power cut Becca headed to her room alone to charge the family’s phones.

She was left terrified when she discovered two thugs heading to her hotel room in a bid to rob her family.

Speaking about the horror incident Becca said: “As I got in the lift these two teenagers got in the lift with me and just pressed my floor level.

“I honestly didn’t think anything of it because there’s five rooms per floor so I just assumed they were going to one of them.”

The two robbers then exited the lift on Becca’s floor and headed straight for her room.

She said: “I thought ‘oh sh*t I have obviously got off on the wrong floor, what a palaver I’m going to have to wait for the lift again.’ But it was the right floor.

“It happened all quite quickly and they just strolled straight into my room.

“I then followed in after them, which in hindsight, I shouldn’t have because you hear horror stories and I think it could have gone sour.

“But I just didn’t really think and went straight into the room and shouted ‘what are you doing in my room?'”

Becca says one of the intruders then started screaming at her in Spanish.

She responded by yelling: “Get the f*ck out, get the f*ck out, get the f*ck out.” until the two thugs ran off.

The terrifying incident was not over though with the would be thieves returning minutes later and banging on the door.

Becca said she stayed in her room with the door locked as the two teens continued to bang on it, she added: “I was absolutely petrified.

“I know it sounds silly and people have said you should have done this, you should have locked them in the room, you should have decked them but at that moment I think it was just that invasion of privacy.

“This is supposed to be your safe place when you are away, you’re away from home, we don’t travel all that often so we were really shaken.

“Then that night I did not sleep because I was flinching at every noise.

“If it had happened earlier on in the week we would have flown home.”

Becca has now warned Brits who are planning a holiday to Spain[/caption]

Becca went on to report the incident to hotel security after discovering another family had experienced a similar break in losing passports, watches and other valuables to the thieves.

After the harrowing ordeal Becca is warning other tourists who plan to visit Spain.

She said: “I would advise just to be alert.

“A lot of people have said we were scaremongering people not to go away, not at all.

“We will certainly go on holiday again, it’s not a case of us never going abroad again but I think it’s just having that awareness that if you are a lone woman, please be careful.

“I’m very lucky that I’m OK but I think it’s just a case of having your wits about you a bit more.

“When you go on holiday you tend to relax and become a little bit naive to these situations.”

She also recommended tourists travel with padlocks so they can secure their valuables inside suitcases.

She added: “Obviously keep your valuables safe.

“I know some people say don’t use the safes, we personally lock all of ours and padlock them in our suitcases.

“I think it’s just a case of having your wits about you and knowing not to get comfortable in somewhere you’ve never been before.”

Although she plans to continue travelling, Becca said she’ll now take extra precautions.

“I’m considering getting a webcam that you can put in your room next time we go away. I will carry on locking my stuff away. I would never take the kids away on my own.

“I certainly wouldn’t have cleaners in my room ever again, not to say it definitely was them but they have access to your room.

“I don’t know if I would feel comfortable going up to a room on my own again.”

Everything you need to know about visiting Spain

Liverpool ‘chasing England star Marc Guehi’ with Bayer Leverkusen accelerating £30MILLION Jarell Quansah pursuit

LIVERPOOL are interested in signing Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi this summer.

And the £30million that the Reds are on the verge of receiving for Jarell Quansah could help to fund the deal.

Leverkusen are closing in on Quansah, in a deal that is separate to Liverpool‘s swoop for Florian Wirtz.

Reds boss Arne Slot could look to upgrade his back line by recruiting Guehi, who has just one year remaining on his Crystal Palace contract.

Eagles chiefs are already looking at potential replacements for their skipper, with Sporting star Ousmane Diomande being considered.

Quansah, who is currently on England duty at the U21 European Championship in Slovakia, has already agreed personal terms with Leverkusen.

The defender now has his heart set on moving to Germany in search of regular first-team football.

And all that now remains is for the two clubs to agree a fee.

Leverkusen are yet to table an official offer for the star.

Though they have been locked in talks with the Anfield chiefs and an agreement worth around £30m with a series of performance-related add-ons is close to being finalised.

He’s expected to be involved again on Saturday in the quarter-final against Spain.

The ace has come through the ranks at Liverpool and enjoyed a spell on loan at Bristol Rovers back in 2023.

Horrifying moment off-duty cop chokes ‘phone thief’ to death as desperate bystanders beg him to stop

THIS is the terrifying moment a police officer chokes a suspected phone thief to death as onlookers beg him to stop.

The 58-year-old Spanish cop was out for dinner with a friend on Tuesday when the alleged thief stole his phone in northeastern Madrid.

The unnamed cop will appear in court[/caption]

Disturbing footage shows the moment the off-duty cop chased the suspect down the street then slammed him to the ground and held him in a chokehold.

In a desperate attempt to stop him from killing the alleged thief, locals are heard calling: “please let him breathe”.

“You’re going to suffocate the guy, man. Let go of his neck,” one shouts.

Another can be heard saying: “He’s not going to run away. Just let him go.”

Ignoring their pleas, the officer continues to press down on the man’s neck before police and paramedics arrived at the scene.

But despite medics’ attempt at saving him, he was soon pronounced dead after suffering from cardia arrest.

Emergency services confirmed in a statement that a 36-year-old man had died of asphyxiation after 30 minutes of attempted resuscitation.

Officers arrested the unnamed cop who appeared in court today.

The devastating incident has sparked outrage in Spain, with some drawing comparisons to the killing of George Floyd in 2020 who died after a police officer knelt on his neck for nine minutes.

Sharing their horror online, one person posted: ”I can’t breathe.’ These were the words George Floyd uttered minutes before his death when a New York police officer killed him by asphyxiation.”

Another wrote: “Murdering a person for a simple phone. An off-duty municipal police officer suffocates a person.

“This is how the capitalist world is, a telephone is worth more than a person’s life. What a disgusting society!”

Spain‘s progressive party Más Madrid also weighed in, calling the assault a reflection of how “institutional racism” and “abuse of power” are normalized.

A spokesperson said: “Two police officers, who were apparently under the influence of alcohol, have murdered a person in Torrejón. T

“This reflects how institutional racism and abuse of power are normalized, even outside of working hours.

“We demand an immediate investigation into this alleged murder due to asphyxiation caused by a police officer in Torrejón.”

This isn’t the first time a case like this has taken place in Madrid.

In 2018, protests erupted in the city after a Senegalese vendor was shot dead in the Italian city of Florence.

Some 19 protesters and 10 police officers were injured as clashes spread across the city.

Leftie comics like Jo Brand on new ITV DNA show are a special horror – pillars of woke masquerading as ‘alternative’

TELEVISION is filled with all sorts of human horrors.

In my experience, the worst of the lot, though, are comedians, who tend to be nasty, morose, selfish, short- tempered, needy, back-biting, point-scoring egomaniacs.

Jo Brand and Julian Clary sitting in theatre seats.

ITV
The pair pictured above on DNA Journey, an ITV rip-off which operates in much the same way as BBC One’s Who Do You Think You Are[/caption]

There are some honourable exceptions, obviously.

The real nightmares, however, are the left-wing stand-ups who still see themselves as “alternative” but are actually pillars of TV’s woke, middle-class establishment and confuse their foul-mouthed political tirades and posturing with A) Compassion and B) Comedy.

Jo Brand and Julian Clary are hardly the worst of them, but they’ll have to do because they’ve just entered the wow zone on DNA Journey, an ITV rip-off which operates in much the same way as BBC One’s Who Do You Think You Are?

Only significant differences, in fact, are the ITV celebs appear in tandem and finish with an underwhelming reveal where a sweet, old woman from County Down called Gabrielle Rush suddenly had to come to terms with the news she was Jo Brand’s second cousin (not nearly enough times removed).

Poverty porn

Before we arrived at that dead end, though, the pair had to lay out their dreams for the Journey with the phrase “shooting for the moon” not even coming close to covering this pair’s fantasies.

Because his great-grandfather was Irish, “where all the comedy comes from,” Julian hoped he might be related to Oscar Wilde, while Jo wanted to find someone caring as she fancies herself as “one of those people that wants to make things better for people”.

Unless, of course, you’re one of those people Jo disagrees with politically, when she wants to spray you with battery acid.

In the event?

Conveniently, Julian did indeed discover a distant ancestor had once taken a picture of Oscar Wilde, and he also learned he had a great grandfather (x2) who, according to a London historian, “was a policeman who’d served under Inspector Rimmer and Inspector Lecoq.”

Here they also established a link to Jack the Ripper (Julian’s GGx2 hadn’t nicked him) that was almost as vague as the one they established to the serial killer during Alex Brooker’s DNA Journey and Gemma Collins’ Who Do You Think You Are?

For the truth is, of course, if they are desperate enough, ancestral shows can link everyone who lived in late 19th-century London to Jack the Ripper, just as lazily as they can link almost everyone with an Irish relative to the potato famine.

In Jo’s case, though, it was another of their obsessions. Poverty porn.

Her great-grandfather, it transpired, had risen from the depths of a cholera-infested London hellhole to become a first-class dining car attendant on the railways, who rose to “the very top of his profession”.

A triumph of the human spirit that reminded Jo of someone else. Any guesses?

“I always thought that a bit about myself and comedy, because the reality was an Oxbridge education was more of a ticket to get on at the BBC. I had to do it all by myself.”

You can see why a middle-class, home counties, grammar school girl like Jo wants to play the prole, obviously.

In all of human history, though, there can’t be many people as lucky and privileged as Jo Brand and Julian Clary, who may well have been inconvenienced by the fact they weren’t nearly as funny as Oxbridge boys like Not The Nine O’Clock News and Python, at the start of their careers, but quickly became part of comedy’s new right-on establishment and have both screwed a 40-year living out of TV on little more than innuendo and mildly amusing observations about cake.

There’s no chance of getting rid of them now either. They’re fixtures.

So I hope TV takes a slightly more ruthless approach with genealogy shows, which have been nothing but a series of let-downs since WDYTYA discovered in 2016 that Danny Dyer was heir to the throne, and rarely leave you with anything more than one fact you’ll remember beyond the closing credits, as was demonstrated last night.

“Analysis has shown Jo Brand is 37 per cent Irish.”

And still 63 per cent stout.

ISLE SAY!

LOVE Island, series 12: Where it all went wrong.

Day one. First arrival, Meg: “What do you think I do?”

Shakira: “You’re too glamorous to do a nine-to-five job. It’s something interesting.”

Meg: “I do payroll.”

And from that moment onwards, it was all downhill.

GAME’S UP FOR PADDY

Something truly amazing happened during Soccer Aid’s match on Sunday night[/caption]

AFTER a month of spin-off shows and Sam Thompson’s bellowing theatrics, I’d been fully expecting to hate every moment of Soccer Aid’s England versus a World XI charity game, on Sunday night.

Come the big day, however, something strange happened.

England manager Tyson Fury started swearing a lot, for starters. Then, with the World XI trailing 3-0, Carlos Tevez suddenly started playing like the Golden Boot was at stake while the great Leonardo Bonucci forgot himself entirely and nearly put Lioness Steph Houghton in traction with the most brutally executed sliding tackle you’ve seen all season.

Before you knew it, the score was 4-4 and the game was heading to the time-lengthening penalty shoot-out sponsors Unicef had probably been craving all night.

Right up until the moment that foghorning oaf Big Zuu barrelled in from nowhere to stick an 83rd minute winner inside England goalkeeper Paddy McGuinness’s near post.

At which point, Zuu set off on the wildest goal celebrations since Marco Tardelli’s “Scream for Italy” at the 1982 World Cup final and I could contain myself no longer and laughed until it nearly hurt.

Throughout it all, of course, commentator Sam Matterface and the other ITV worthies insisted the “most important and amazing” thing here was the £15million raised for charity, but they couldn’t have been much more wrong.

Via trial and a lot of funny errors, Soccer Aid had actually discovered something Paddy McGuinness does more disastrously than host A Question Of Sport. And that’s truly amazing.

SPEAKING entirely for herself at the Queen’s Club tennis tournament, BBC’s Anne Keothavong: “You know what you’re going to get with Tatjana Maria, low balls below the knees and you’ve got to get under them.”

UNEXPECTED MORONS IN THE BAGGING AREA

THE Finish Line, Roman Kemp: “Got To Be Certain was an Eighties hit for which Aussie pop star?”

Paul: “Ozzy Osbourne.”

Tipping Point, Ben Shephard: “Beginning in 1756, in what year did the Seven Years War end?”

Pete: “1649.”

And Tipping Point for Soccer Aid, Ben Shephard: “Billy and Nanny are names commonly given to the adult male and female of which farm animal?”

Chris Hughes: “Pig.”

Ronnie O’Sullivan is BACK with Strictly star Laila Rouass as they quit UK for shock new life abroad

SNOOKER star Ronnie O’Sullivan and girlfriend Laila Rouass are loopy for each other again nine months after splitting up.

The pair have rekindled their relationship — and pals told The Sun they are hoping for a “clean break” from the UK by moving to Dubai together.

Seven-time world champion Ronnie, 49, is selling his £2million house in Chigwell, Essex, and plans to head off to the UAE with actress and Strictly star Laila, 53.

A source told us: “They have been back together for a while.

“The time apart gave them time to think about what they want and what is important to them — and that is being together.

Ronnie is moving to the Middle East and Laila is going with him. They’ve talked about living in Dubai, which is just a two-hour flight from where Ronnie has his snooker academy in Saudi Arabia.

“He has spoken to people on his snooker circuit about the move and is excited about a clean break from the UK for him and Laila.

“They have had their issues in the past but Ronnie and Laila have worked through it and seem really happy again.

“The people who know them think they make a great couple and just want them to live a happy, quiet life.”

Ronnie — nicknamed the Rocket because of his explosive stayle of play — proposed to Laila in 2013, a year after they started dating.

The Sun first revealed they had ended their engagement last September after his hectic work schedule pushed them apart.

The source added: “They’ve been on and off before but Ronnie really wants to make it work with Laila.

“She will be joining him in the Middle East and they’ll see how it goes.”

Ronnie first revealed his dream of moving abroad earlier this year but said it was early days.

However, following his defeat in the Snooker World Championship semi-finals in May, he said: “I think I am going to be moving out of the UK this year.

“I’ll be moving away to the Middle East. We’ll see how it goes — I might be back in six months.

“A new life somewhere else. I don’t know how that is going to pan out.

“I will still try to play snooker but I don’t know what the future looks like for me really.

“It is a big part of my life but I have to try and figure out what my future looks like, whether it’s playing or not.”
