Kevin Prendergast dead: Ruby Walsh leads tributes to ‘trailblazer’ Irish horse racing trainer
RUBY Walsh is among many prominent horse racing figures to pay tribute to Kevin Prendergast after his death at the age of 92.
The son of the legendary Paddy ‘Darkie’ Prendergast, he carried on the family business by establishing himself as a hugely successful flat trainer.
Having been an amateur jockey early on in life, he obtained his trainer’s licence in 1963 and embarked upon a glittering career with over 2000 winners.
Speaking on today’s ITV coverage from Royal Ascot, Walsh hailed Prendergast on a personal as well as professional level.
Walsh emphasized: “He followed in the footsteps of his father Darky, and he trailed for long enough to compete against the great Vincent O’Brien and Aidan O’Brien, and he was a trailblazer.
“His horses always looked impeccable. He was a brilliant racehorse trainer.
“He was a legend in the sport, but he was a massive character, and he will be sadly missed.”

The £75million renovation set to transform historic UK city with huge outdoor market and new central fountains
THE historic city of Cambridge is set to undergo major upgrades, including the restoration of an ancient fountain.
Known as the Civic Quarter project, the council is planning on upgrading the Cambridge Market, Corn Exchange and Guildhall at an estimated cost of £75million.

The Cambridge City Council has revealed plans for upgrades for the city, which is known for its top university, beautiful buildings and punting along the River Cam.
Locals have been invited to give feedback on the more detailed plans in preparation for a planning application which will be submitted in 2025.
The scheme, which would begin in October 2026 at the earliest, will see three areas of Cambridge upgraded.
The council website explained: “The ambition of the Civic Quarter project is to improve the experience of everyone visiting the city centre by creating more inclusive and accessible buildings, and better public spaces where people can meet and enjoy cultural events.”
It also added that the project will enhance heritage sites as well as reduce water use and carbon emissions.
The Cambridge Market is a huge part of the city, having begun operating in the Middle Ages.
It is currently open Monday to Saturday with around 100 stalls selling all sorts, from food to flowers, locally made clothes and accessories.
As part of the project, the market will open seven days a week and will have new permanent stalls alongside the temporary fixtures.
For passers-by there will be a new covered seating area and the size of the existing canopy will be reduced.
The historic fountain in the centre will be retained and restored to its former glory too.

The fountain is a long-standing feature of the city having been built in 1614 to give clean drinking water to the people of Cambridge.
It hasn’t had running water for a long time and is often used as seating by the public.
The Corn Exchange is a Grade II listed building which is used as an events and concert space and is also set to undergo some changes.
As it is listed not many changes can be made, but the venue will be improved with energy-saving features, like solar panels.
There will also be the addition of a sound and audio system to improve the overall experience at the venue.
The capacity for attendees will be able to increase, and there will be more concessions and bar areas.
The Guildhall, which is a civic building, is used for events like weddings, craft workshops and exhibitions.
Improvements made will be to reduce energy use and install a customer service centre, public cafe and work spaces.
One Sun reporter, Sophie Warburton, lives in Cambridge and reveals the perfect time that visitors should visit the city.
She adds that one particularly busy tourist hot spot is Kings Parade which is beautiful, but there’s another spot she’d rather go to.
Sophie also has advice on punting, and the times to avoid because every amateur punter takes to the water.
Plus, here are more things to do in Cambridge and how to spend a day there.

Piers Morgan reveals he turned down big money reality TV show just last week – saying ‘my parents would disown me’
PIERS Morgan has revealed that he turned down a big money reality TV show just last week.
Journalist and presenter Piers, 60, admitted that if he went on the show his “parents would disown” him.

Piers is no stranger when it comes to reality TV, appearing on Celebrity Apprentice in 2008 and as a judge on both America and Britain’s Got Talent.
But there is one show in particular which is off the cards for the broadcaster.
Speaking on the Rosebud with Gyles Brandreth podcast Piers revealed that he turned down a huge reality TV show just last week.
Speaking on the latest episode of the pod he says of his parents:
“One thing they always said to me was ‘Don’t ever do the jungle, I’m A Celebrity’, I always remember this and last week I got a call from ITV ‘Could we tempt you to do the jungle?’
“And I went ‘There’s actually not enough money at ITV to get me to go in that jungle because my parents would disown me’. That for them was the red line. “
“So you won’t ever see me munching kangaroo testicles, I’m afraid.”
I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here sees a star-studded line-up swap their luxurious lifestyle for Bushtucker trials in the Australian jungle.
The famous faces are put through trials and torment as they battle it out to become Queen or King of the jungle.
Back in 2022 Piers asked for £5million to do the famous TV show fronted by comedy duo Ant McPartlin and Dec Donnelly.
He was previously asked if he was planning to follow in Matt Hancock‘s footsteps who shocked the nation when appeared on the show in 2022.
Piers told The Sun at its Who Cares Wins awards: “I would rather shoot myself slowly with a slow moving bullet that corroded through every bone in my body before it finished me off than go into the jungle with people like Matt Hancock.
“My parents have actually said to me they would put up with anything – and I’ve put them through a lot – but not the jungle.
“It’s a step too far. That’s their red line. I’d get disowned.”
Piers fuelled rumours he’d finally been persuaded to sign up to the gruelling reality show on X (formerly known as Twitter).
He tweeted: “Like I said, £5million and I’ll come and munch kangaroo testicles. Not a penny less.”

Millions of TV owners getting irresistible sports freebie – exact brand of television you’ll need to claim footie perk
MILLIONS of football fans across the UK can now score big without even owning a games console.
EA Sports FC 25, the latest footie game sensation, is now available to play directly on Samsung TVs and smart monitors, thanks to a game-changing deal with Xbox Cloud Gaming.

The offer is rolling out via Samsung Gaming Hub, which is available on newer Samsung TVs and smart monitors.
That means fans from London to Leeds can dive into the virtual pitch using nothing more than their telly, a controller, and a Game Pass subscription.
Gamers will need an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate membership to get in on the action, but there’s a huge bonus for those who haven’t signed up before.
Samsung is offering two months completely free. Just head to the Samsung Promotions app on your TV, tap the Xbox promotion banner, or scan the QR code shown on screen using your mobile.
Once inside the game, fans can take control of over 19,000 real-life players, representing more than 700 clubs from across 30 leagues.
Whether you fancy running a team in career mode, teaming up with mates in 5v5 Rush, or managing every aspect of your club with the new FC IQ system, the options are endless.
It’s the most immersive version of the game yet, and thanks to Samsung’s deal with Microsoft and Electronic Arts, it’s all available instantly via the cloud – no downloads, discs or consoles required.
It also means you can go from watching the big match live on TV to jumping straight into one of your own, all on the same screen.
Samsung’s Gaming Hub is also home to other major streaming platforms including Amazon Luna and Nvidia GeForce Now, giving even more reason for gamers to stay glued to their smart screens.
Hun Lee, executive vice president of Samsung’s Visual Display Business, said: “We are delighted to bring EA SPORTS FC 25 to Samsung TVs and monitors through cloud gaming on Samsung Gaming Hub.
As the world’s leading TV manufacturer, one of our goals is to immerse soccer fans around the world in the exciting game of soccer, whether they are playing the game or watching a match live on a Samsung TV.”
The promotion is expected to drive a wave of interest from casual fans and hardcore gamers alike, especially with the current buzz surrounding the EA FC franchise.
Just last week, Real Madrid and England ace Jude Bellingham made headlines at the EA FC 25 launch in Madrid, where he rolled his eyes at an overly dramatic intro calling him “the main man from Madrid”.
He’s also just been unveiled as the cover star for the EA FC 25 Ultimate Edition, appearing alongside football legends David Beckham, Zinedine Zidane, and Gianluigi Buffon.
With the Euros in full swing and football fever gripping the nation, Samsung’s latest perk is perfectly timed.
If you’ve got a compatible Samsung screen at home, this is your moment to take to the pitch without spending a penny more. All you need is the telly, a controller, and a few taps to get started.

Blow for millions of Brit holidaymakers as price of passports set to rise again to plug growing black hole
THE price of passports is set to rise again in a massive blow to thousands of Brit holidaymakers.
Ministers have been urged to increase the £95 renewal fee once more in a bid to fill a “growing black hole” in the Passport Office’s budget.

Higher costs will affect millions of sun-seekers, with almost seven million passports issued to Brits last year.
An adult passport is valid for 10 years while a children’s passport is valid for five.
An increase in fees could see travellers charged £32 more per application, according to The Telegraph.
This comes as the Passport Office recorded a budget deficit of almost £230million last year and £916million over the past five years.
The National Audit Office (NAO) said the increased fees will fill a “black hole” currently being paid for by taxpayer funds.
Adults currently pay £94.50 for a new passport or £222 for a one-day renewal.
Passport renewal fees have already seen a hike of £6 this year.
In April, the cost of applying for a new passport online increased from £88.50 to £94.50 for adults, and from £69 to £74 for kids.
Postal applications hiked from £100 to £107 for adults and from £69 to £74 for under-16s.
The premium one-day-turnaround service for those in desperate need of a new passport went up to £222 from £207.50, and to £189 from £176.50 for children.
The above-inflation rise marks the third time the price of passports have gone up in just over two years.
Last April the cost of the holiday booklet rose by 7 per cent, following a hefty 9 per cent rise in February 2023.
Most UK passports last for 10 years, although for many countries including the EU people need at least six months left to travel.
The Home Office has long maintained it does not profit from passport sales and increase prices solely to offset higher manufacturing and processing costs.
Holidays are getting more expensive anyway with airlines pushing up prices to keep pace with increased fuel costs.
Jet-setters have also been braced for anti-tourist protests in party towns like Ibiza where the locals are sick of their areas being trashed.

Major alert for Irish homeowners over summer fridge hack as temperatures reach 29C
IRELAND is set to bask in sizzling temperatures this weekend with highs of 29C today.
And Irish homeowners are being urged to place an A4 sheet of paper in their fridge to avoid food going off early in the warmer conditions.
It looks like that today is the hottest day of the year so far – with sizzling 29C temperatures.
Meteorologist Cathal Nolan from Ireland’s Weather Channel revealed we will experience “very warm or hot weather” until Sunday.
And the sizzling conditions can impact directly food or drink stored in your fridge.
Speaking to The Express, white goods manufacturer Beko, highlighted that the issue could cause households to lose a lot of food as it could spoil sooner in the warmer weather.
The reason behind it could be related to whether the seal around the door is working properly or not – especially if your fridge is a few years old.
If your seal is not working properly, households could face an increase in energy bills as your fridge would work harder to keep food cold, or even further damage to the fridge.
Homeowners can check if their fridge is working properly using a single sheet of A4 paper.
A spokesperson for Beko said: “One issue that may arise with your fridge is wear and tear on the door seal.
“A worn-out door seal can prevent the refrigerator door from closing properly, causing the cooling system to work harder to keep your groceries fresh.
“This can lead to increased energy consumption and potential damage to your fridge and its temperature settings.
“Warm air entering your fridge can overwhelm the cooling system, especially during hot summer days.
“To check if your fridge door is functioning correctly, use a piece of paper.
“You can buy paper for as little as 1cent or use any paper you have at home.
“Place the paper against the door seal and close the door. When you try to pull the paper out, you should feel some resistance. If the paper slides out easily, your door seal may need replacing.”
HEATWAVE
Weather chiefs confirmed a “very warm and hot day” is on the cards today with long spells of sunshine.
But some isolated showers may develop as the day goes on, possibly becoming heavy at times.
Met Eireann’s Meteorologist Holly O’Neill said: “It is looking to be a lovely day with highs of 24C to 29C, the warmest of those being in the northern half of the country.
“And it will feel slightly milder in the south where highest temperatures will be 20 to 23C in a mainly light south to southeast breeze.
“Tonight we’ll stay mainly dry, with some lingering showers possible over parts of Ulster and Leinster.
“It will be mild, but temperatures not falling below 12C to 17C in the light or variable southerly breeze.”
Saturday will be warm with good sunny spells for most of the country and slightly cloudier conditions in the west.
But scattered showers will move in across the country, some heavy and possibly thundery at times.
And a heavier band of rain will move in off the Atlantic later Saturday night, bringing longer spells of rain.
Sunday is set to be a bright start to the morning, but outbreaks of showery rain will move in from the west in the morning with sunny spells and scattered showers to follow.
Fresher and breezier than recent days with highest temperatures of 15C to 20C, warmest in the east, all with rather brisk westerly winds.

Moment Royal Ascot racegoers hurl punches in vicious brawl in front of shocked punters
THIS is the shocking moment a brawl broke out between two men at Royal Ascot with punches and kicks flying in front of horrified onlookers.
Two men were filmed as they violently fought at the prestigious Berkshire racecourse.

They can be seen repeatedly hitting one another in the head as a crowd watches from a distance.
The men then begin to push each other, before one is knocked to the ground hitting the concrete floor head-first.
Several onlookers try to intervene but fail to break the fight apart before one of them hits the ground.
Both men can be seen wearing well-tailored suits, as their behaviour seems out of place at the famous event.
