‘Castlevania’ Took the Worst Opportunity to Confirm Alucard’s Sexuality That Highlighted a Bigger Problem of the Series

Castlevania is one of the most popular game-to-animation adaptations. Its story, animation, and characters are all top-notch, but that doesn’t mean that the series is devoid of any problems. In fact, the anime takes advantage of Alucard’s sexuality in the worst possible way.

Being a dark fantasy set in the medieval world, Castlevania is bound to be gritty. Additionally, it is about the worlds of vampires and humans clashing. However, the series failed to give Alucard the treatment he deserves.

Alucard’s sexuality is revealed in the worst possible way in Castlevania

In Castlevania, Sypha Belnades points out that Alucard could be a teen in an adult’s body. Being a dhampir, his body ages quickly, but his mind takes its own time to grow up. Thus, even if he physically looks older, mentally he could be much younger. Add to it the fact that he was asleep for a year or so, and he is definitely not an adult.

This is exactly what made the betrayal he faced by the end of season 3 even more heartbreaking. Sypha initially says it to justify his clashes with Trevor, but it makes his relationship with Taka and Sumi nothing but gross. He accepted the sexual advances of two people who he had trusted as friends, and most fans still seem to deny what it actually means.

The first time that Castlevania reveals Alucard is bisexual is during this particular scene with Taka and Sumi. (It is also confirmed by Samuel Deats) He probably has little idea about consensual intimacy at that point. Thus, he lets Taka and Sumi do whatever they want. But as a teenager, it could be one of the most traumatic events of his life. The way that the scene is portrayed so graphically makes fans question about what made the creators okay with everything.

Castlevania has a huge problem regarding intimacy

Alucard’s inappropriate sexual experience is just the tip of the iceberg. Castlevania rarely has any scenes that show consensual intimacy. Yet, it goes into an absurd amount of detail while portraying Alucard’s scene with Taka and Sumi. The first scene that shows some sort of inclusion is simply jarring.

Alucard isn’t the only victim here, especially not when Hector is present. Hector is constantly abused throughout the series. First, he was mistreated by his parents and other humans, and then he had to face extreme physical abuse from Carmilla. Hector is easily manipulated by Carmilla or Lenore.

Carmilla collars him and beats him unpredictably, and the description is graphic, to say the least. He was enslaved by Carmilla and was forced to go through hell. These instances with Alucard and Hector prove that Castlevania loves going down a dark road for absolutely no reason. Taka and Sumi could have betrayed Alucard in hundreds of other ways, but somehow, they resort to creating a traumatizing sexual encounter. Coupled with the fact that Alucard is just a teen or young adult, when it happens, the events start to feel gross.

Castlevania anime is available to stream on Crunchyroll.
