‘Castlevania’ Creator’s Vision for ‘Devil May Cry’ Can Turn Dante Into the Next Alucard of Netflix

After seven long years after the official announcement, the Devil May Cry anime is finally on its way. With Adi Shankar of Castlevania fame at the helm, there is no doubt that the adaptation will be one of the best game adaptations in recent times.

The question is whether the adaptation can give Dante the treatment that made Castlevania’s Alucard one of Netflix’s most well-written characters. There is no exaggeration in saying that Alucard was so well-written that fans were tuning in to watch Castlevania: Nocturne solely cause he was in it.

When we look at it, in a way Dante is as cool as Alucard. He is stylish, cocky, and an excellent mercenary (and he uses guns, two of them), what is not to like? So, could Dante of Devil May Cry be the next Alucard and carry the show on his own?

From Alucard to Dante: The journey of heroes

There are many commonalities between Alucard and Dante. Both are the result of forbidden unions, and this dictates a huge part of their lives. Their mothers are both killed unjustly, with both of them being driven by the spirit of vengeance for a time at least.

They both have a lot of scope for growth (Alucard already had his), and with a compelling backstory, exciting action sequences, style, and charm, there is nothing stopping Dante from being the next fan favorite.

Adi Shankar has Castlevania under his belt, not just the enigma that is Alucard. This means that a video game adaptation is familiar territory to him. As a beloved character from the DMC (Devil May Cry) gaming franchise, it only makes sense for the main character, Dante, to be the focus of the anime.

And although it might be difficult for Dante to exude the same charm as Alucard, there is no doubt that Dante will accumulate a fanbase of his own. Alucard has a charm that is difficult to replicate- he is a Dhampir who is ancient and has gone through so much that life is just tiring.

Adi Shankar could uplift Dante’s character

Dante is constantly on the lookout to slay some bad demons, the likes that could hurt humans. His confidence, energy and style put him in the exact opposite category that Alucard is in.

Silent, brooding, and composed, but with Adi Shankar sprinkling his magic, the already lovable Dante could be endowed with a depth like never before. The Devil May Cry games have always emphasized Dante’s “cool” factor, making the demon hunter an admirable character.

Although Dante usually portrays his tough exterior, beneath all of his humor, there’s an emotional weight that often goes unexplored. This is Adi Shankar’s specialty as he delves into the depths of the character and makes it come alive. With the voice actors all being of considerable fame, the emotions will be conveyed perfectly as well.

Be it Dante’s rivalry with Vergil (twin brother) or his grief and anguish over his mother’s death, it all points to an abundance of foundation. As long as Dante gets the care and focus that Alucard did (it took seven years, that is sufficient time), he will shine without a doubt.

You can stream Castlevania and Castlevania: Nocturne on Netflix.
