Beyond style and strength, Bleach characters have extremely colourful personalities. Some of them are headstrong like Zaraki, while others are stern and serious like Byakuya. Out of all the characters, the most eccentric is undoubtedly Kurotsuchi Mayuri. Mayuri’s passion for his job and experimentation in general is a menace to Soul Society.
If he sets his eyes on any character, they’re under great risk of being altered forever. Mayuri’s ambitions are ruthless and he doesn’t believe in limits, as he often pushes them to achieve what he desires. He doesn’t care for anyone or anything as long as he can transform his visions into reality.

As scary and unhinged as Mayuri is, there are two characters in Bleach who are even scarier: Kisuke Urahara and Kyoraku Shunsui. These two characters are extremely cunning and diplomatic, and definitely someone to look out for.
The intimidating complexity of Shunsui and Urahara’s characters
Most Bleach characters are strong and play their part in battle, whether it’s fighting on the frontlines, providing support in battle, or gathering intel. But, what about characters who are capable of it all? Shunsui and Urahara are both like that, they can fight but also work behind the scenes to manipulate the battlefield. However, that’s not the only scary aspect of their character as this Reddit comment points out.

From the moment he was introduced in Bleach, Kyoraku Shunsui has always been a step ahead of everyone around him. He was strong, perceptive, and yet extremely humble. He always underplayed how much he was capable of. Even though he never spoke about his intentions or his strength he exuded a menacing aura. And, that’s what makes him scary.
It was interesting to see him avoid fighting for as long as he could, and then going all out when the situation demanded it. He fought against characters like Chad, Starrk, and Lille. He used Aizen for his plan, which was unexpected to say the least.
The most admirable aspect of his character was that could get things done, whether it was through strength or through other twisted ways. On the contrary, we never saw a clear demonstration of Urahara’s strength. Every time he engaged in matters of the Soul Society, he got things done in roundabout ways.
It’s hard to trust both Urahara and Shunsui
Throughout Bleach, it was quite evident that both Urahara and Shunsui worked for the greater good. All they wanted was to keep Soul Society safe and it didn’t matter how far they had to go to ensure that. Their allegiance to Soul Society preceded everything else, which made it difficult to trust them blindly. They could sacrifice anyone or anything for this greater good they believed in.

Shunsui was better than Urahara in this respect as he deeply cared for Ukitake. As for Urahara, even if he cared for someone deeply, it wouldn’t show. That’s how secretive he was about almost everything. Their complexity and unpredictability make it difficult to trust them, no matter if they are your foe or a friend.
Bleach is available to stream on Netflix.
