I’m American & my husband’s Scottish – he says my accent has ruined our dream baby name, it makes it so rude

A MUM-TO-BE has been left red-faced after her husband pointed out that her accent makes their Scottish baby name sound very rude.

Picking a name for your little one can be an incredibly difficult task as you want to make sure you choose for something unique, but not so out there that your child gets picked on.

Some people opt to name their child after a family member, whilst others choose to name their offspring after a favourite book or film character.

One woman, however, has revealed that her American twang has ruined her plans to give her little boy a Scottish name as a nod to her husband’s heritage.

Posting on Reddit, the mum-to-be said: “We’re expecting a baby boy and have been planning to name him Innes.

“We were happy with the decision until today, when I said the word ‘anus’ and my husband thought I was saying our future child’s name.

“Is he destined for a lifetime of anus jokes if we stick with the name Innes?”

She added: “I’m American and my husband is Scottish. I don’t hear much similarity at all when he pronounces Innes and anus, but they do sound fairly similar when I say them.

“We live abroad, but our son will likely attend international schools where students generally have Americanised accents.

“Boy names are HARD, and this one feels right. A little homage to his Scottish roots, not too common, easy to pronounce.

“We had a close contender for months that we’ve put back on the table for exactly this reason, though – it sounds nothing like anus at all.”

And she may be gutted by the reaction as social media users have strongly urged her to ditch the name choice.

“Honestly it would be a dealbreaker for me if I pronounced my child’s name like anus, regardless of bullying”, insisted one person.

A second wrote: “There’s just so many other names that don’t sound just like anus.”

Meanwhile, a third joked: “Maybe try it out at Starbucks and see how people say it or write it.”

It’s not the first time Scotland has influenced a new mum’s baby name choices.

One woman revealed she turns to the map of Scotland to find inspiration for her kids’ names.

Sammi lives in England but chooses to name her children after Scottish places.

And another mum-to-be was forced to scrap her baby name choices after moving north of the border.

She told social media users she was disappointed after realising that people pronouncing the monikers in a Scottish accent would ‘change’ the names.

Banned Names in the UK

The UK has no law restricting names, but names that contain obscenities, numerals, misleading titles, or are impossible to pronounce are likely to be rejected when registering a child.
