Damien Duff channels Roy Keane while rubbishing supposed drawback of Shelbourne’s European journey

ALL news is local.

So the pitting of Shelbourne and Linfield against each other in a Champions League qualifier could be viewed in a number of ways.

Duff has turned out to be as uncompromising a figure as his longtime Ireland teammate[/caption]

The most obvious is a clash between the league winners from either side of the border, competing to be known as All-Ireland champions, even if it is a title for which Linfield cares little.

Damien Duff said: “It’s a brilliant day for everyone at the football club, especially for those who have been through the dark times.

“Players and staff watched the draw together and there is already a great buzz at the prospect of an All-Ireland derby.”

It is also a tussle between two former Dundalk team-mates, Shels’ Sean Gannon and Chris Shields of Linfield, although both are suspended for the first leg.

In Scotland, it was being framed as a contest between teams led by ‘Celtic and Rangers heroes’.

David Healy had six months at Ibrox as a player which was long enough to win an SPL title and League Cup.

Duff spent 17 months as a coach at Celtic during which time the club won two league titles, a Scottish Cup and a League Cup.

Born just five months apart in 1979, the tie could be defining in the coaching career of both famed former internationals.

Healy’s first experience of European football as a manager was a 2-1 aggregate defeat to Cork City in 2016. He fell agonisingly short of leading Linfield into the group stages of the Conference League in 2022.

His side led Latvia’s RFS 2-0 in the first leg but lost a penalty shoot-out in Belfast after conceding an own goal in stoppage time at the end of extra-time.

Duff’s came last season when they edged past St Joseph’s of Gibraltar before being outclassed by FC Zurich.

Healy is regularly mentioned in dispatches for club jobs across the water. Duff would be, had he not made it clear he has no interest in uprooting.

But negotiating the first round of the Champions League – and making group-stage football a realistic proposition – might have a few more willing to test his resolve.

For now, though, he said he will relish the extra demands Europe’s premier competition will bring, believing the complaints of others about a congested fixture list are a relic of the League’s part-time past.

Duff said: “League of Ireland teams are like ‘ugh’ but we’re going to have to deal with it and lads are going to have to get their head around it. I dealt with it for 15, 16, 20 years.

“But I still always have that. ‘I have to go again?’… yeah, you do. It’s your f***ing job and it’s the best days of your life, playing football.

“That’s up to lads looking after themselves, recovering, putting in the best account of themselves and us as a staff trying to be wise and pick the right team at the right time.”

OTHER OUTLOOK

The argument from other coaches is that so much goes into preparing for a European tie – particularly a higher-ranked opponent – that fitting in domestic fixtures reduces your chance of success.

But Duff shrugged: “It’s just a mentality thing. The big teams all around Europe, they play on a Wednesday and they’re up for the game but they’re up for it again on the weekend.

“It’s absolutely alien, I get that, to our lads but it’s something that I’ll try to hammer home and it’s something that I’ve hammered at them or aimed at them for years gone by.

“It’s not just the Europe thing. ‘Oh, Friday, we have to go again Monday. Oh, I’m tired’, You’re not tired.

“They’re all young boys. A lot of them are still living at home with their mammies getting their washing done, their cooking done.

“You can sleep 20 hours a day if you want to. All I want to see you for is 90 minutes. So to be able to only attack mentally two games a week isn’t an elite mindset for me.

“It’s just an excitement. So you can sleep when you’re dead, I guess.”

Shels are due to host Linfield on either Tuesday July 8 or Wednesday July 9 with the return leg in Belfast the following week

The no-nonsense tips that made Kim Woodburn the original Cleanfluencer, plus the 10-minute method that brought her fame

KIM WOODBURN has made us laugh, cry, and get our act together when it comes to cleaning.

The TV personality and cleaning whizz has given us much-needed life advice over the years, which is even more appreciated after the sad news of her passing away earlier this week.

The TV personality has helped the nation keep their homes clean for decades[/caption]

The 83-year-old is reported to have passed away from a short illness, leaving her husband and friends heartbroken.

Kim rose to fame in Channel 4‘s hit series How Clean is Your House where she showed people how to really keep their house in order.

Here, we look back on her 11 no-nonsense tips for a spick and span home that she previously shared with Fabulous.

Clean as you go

Now listen, lazy bones. If you put a drink back in the fridge and it falls over, you think you’ll get back to it tomorrow. Oh no, you don’t – clean it up it right away! It takes seconds to clean things up as you go. You’ve no need to make a song and dance about it.

Steam your shower walls

You know those little steamers you can buy to steam your kitchen floors? What they don’t tell you is they are perfect for cleaning your shower walls, too. They are as light as a feather and it cleans the tiles up a treat.

Use old towels to clean your oven

All the old towels you’ve got, never throw them out, my loves – cut them into strips. They’re rough and ready. Dip them in some warm soapy water with a bit of bicarbonate of soda to clean your oven.

Hot wash your sheets

All sorts of things fall off our bodies, especially if you’re very hairy. Put your sheets on a hot wash at least once a week, no lower than 60 degrees, or 80 degress if you can. You’re lying on them, dear, doing all sorts. You might be a very passionate person.

Sack off your sponge

Don’t use a sponge to wash up – they are filthy. You need a flat cloth or a dish-washing brush so if there’s any dirt in there you can rinse it under the tap. But a sponge, my loves – they’re the most unhygienic.

Shop around

The Pound Shop have some extremely cheap cleaners. There’s no excuse for anyone to say they can’t afford them. There are so many choices, so hunt around. If not, use lots of vinegar and warm water to clean the windows. It does a super job – it’s the old remedy.

So long, shoes

You go out in your shoes down the road and there’s dog pee that you step in or spit on the pavement. Make sure you have a good, rough carpet so when you stand on it, rub your shoes. You only have to pick up that rug and bang it on the outside wall – my God, you’ll go blind.

Deep clean your fridge

Once every couple of months, take all your fridge out – it takes five minutes. Get a nice towelling cloth and some warm water. Dip it in bicarb and lovie, it’s spotless. Do not leave your fridge for more than two months. When you start going over that, my loves – by God, you’re asking for trouble.

Toaster terror

Take out the tray at the bottom of your toaster at least once a week. Whip out an old newspaper and thump that toaster and the crumbs all come out. Then roll up the paper, dear, and throw it away. People say: “Oh, my toaster smells of burning.” Yes, it’s year-old breadcrumbs you lazy pigs.

Filter fail

If you’ve got a vacuum, do yourself a favour and clean the filters. You see people run a vacuum up and down the rug, but it’s not picking anything up. Does it not occur to you that the filter’s full? Use your common sense.

10 minute method

Kim has also shared her hack for making cleaning tasks a bit easier with the Express.

Clean as you go and throw as you go. If you do that you can’t go wrong. If you let it build then you have a huge task ahead of you. It only takes a small amount of time. Ten minutes every day and you can keep everything manageable

The handheld, rechargeable fans being sold at a ‘very good price’ that have shoppers racing to their nearest retail park

THEY’RE a godsend when it comes to trying to get some sleep on a hot night.

But sticky temperatures can prove a problem when you leave the comfort of your cool home and head out.

The fans are a “godsend” in the heat, and are described as a “personal cooling companion”[/caption]

So it’s no wonder shoppers are racing to nab a personal handheld fan, described as a “personal cooling companion”, for just £3.99.

Sally took to the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK group on Facebook to share her find, posting a snap of the Status 3″ rechargeable black handheld fan.

“I don’t know if this a good deal but I’ve been to Currys and these Status handheld fans were only £3.99 each,” she wrote alongside the picture.

“They are USB rechargeable as well!”

In addition, the fan – “built for breezy convenience” – has three speeds, a USB-C rechargeable battery, and an overcharge safety feature.

It also comes with a dock, so you can stand it up on your desk or bedside table as well as holding it.

And in the comments section on the Facebook post, people insisted the fan is one worth getting.

“That’s good, I got this last year – it was £9.99!” one wrote.

“For anyone that wants to know there is loads in the Coventry one,” another said.

As a third called it a “very good price”, someone else said: “I have one of these and they are extremely good.

“That’s a good price for them as well!”

“That’s a brilliant price,” another added.

“I paid £14.99 for two from Amazon and I thought that was a bargain.”

“Good price and brilliant – I’ve had one for years,” someone else gushed.

“I’ve got one. I got it from B&M a couple of years ago and I think they are really good,” another said.

Someone else admitted they’d paid £9 for the same fan in Dunelm, while another insisted they “need one for Disney”.

Five ways to keep your kids cool in the heat

IT can be really difficult - and costly - to keep kids cool when it's hot outside. But Fabulous Digital Senior Reporter and mum-of-two Sarah Bull shares five ways to help, and they won't break the budget either.

Strip them off

It might sound simple, but stripping kids off at home can really help them regulate their temperature when it’s warm outside. Just remember to regularly apply suncream, as more of their skin will be exposed to the sun.

Cool down bedrooms before nighttime

When it’s hot outside, it can be difficult for kids to go to sleep – especially if their bedroom feels like an oven. If you have a room that’s not in direct sunshine, keep the windows open to let in a breeze. It’s also a good idea to keep the curtains closed, to prevent the room from heating up.

Wear a hat

Another simple technique, but one that really works. Make sure that if your kids are playing outside, they’ve got a hat on. It keeps their face and head shielded from the sun, and also helps if you’ve got a little one who struggles with bright sunlight. If your tot struggles to keep a hat on, try one with a strap that goes under the chin to help.

Avoid the car

The car can be one of the hottest places during a heatwave, and often takes a long time to cool down. If you have the option, it’s better to stay at home rather than taking kids out anywhere in a hot car.

Stay hydrated

This is always important, but even more so in a heatwave. Make sure you’re regularly reminding your kids to have a drink, and top them up with cool liquids whenever you can. Use ice too to ensure it’s as cold as it can possibly be.

However, others said that the fans with the spray feature are better for a trip to somewhere like Florida.

“Spray ones are great,” another added.

“I bought one in Florida still works now after 13 years, also got one from Home Bargains.”

“Yeah we got one when my Mrs was last pregnant – it was a godsend in the summer heat,” a third commented.

The positive reviews kept on coming on the Dunelm website, as one person wrote: “Brilliant fans and can be left on e.g. a desk.

“And has three settings!”

“Does what it says, powerful fan, I would recommend,” another added.

They wrote just before Jude’s birth: “It’s become very real with the house renovation and deep clean all done (nesting as they say) and the baby clothes all washed ready to style it out. July is going to be the best month for the rest of our lives xx.”

Man Utd Premier League fixtures: Ruben Amorim handed nightmare start as Arsenal kick off horror run of top six clashes

MANCHESTER UNITED have been handed a nightmare start to the 2025/26 Premier League season.

Ruben Amorim will begin his first full campaign as Red Devils boss under pressure after a dreadful end to last season.

Man Utd crashed to a worst-ever Premier League finish in 15th and missed out on European football totally after losing to Spurs in the Europa League final.

Now, with a transfer window and pre-season under his belt, Amorim has promised better this season, telling fans: “The good days are coming.”

But it certainly won’t be easy, after United were handed a horror run of fixtures to kick off the season.

The Red Devils will face last year’s runners-up Arsenal at home on the opening weekend, in Sky Sports’ 4.30pm Super Sunday clash on August 17.

The real litmus test of United’s credentials will come in two winnable games after that, a trip down to London to take on Fulham before facing newly-promoted Burnley at Old Trafford.

That’s followed by a horror double bill of Manchester City away, Chelsea at home, before a trip to Brentford to see out September.

October sees Man Utd take on bitter rivals and defending champions Liverpool at Anfield with the reverse fixture pencilled in for May 2, 2026.

The festive period starts out quite kindly on paper, with West Ham, Wolves and Bournemouth all coming before they take on Aston Villa and Newcastle before and after Christmas.

Man Utd fans will need to wait until the new year for their first clash against newly-promoted rivals Leeds, with the reverse fixture then taking place in April.

The second Manchester derby commences on January 17 and is immediately followed by Arsenal away a week later.

Spring is greeted with a trip to Newcastle on March 4 followed by Aston Villa at home, while April sees them face Leeds and Brentford at Old Trafford with Chelsea away in the middle.

The final three games of the season will see Man Utd face Sunderland away, Nottingham Forest at home and end the season with a trip down the seaside with Brighton away.

Chelsea Premier League fixtures: Enzo Maresca’s side handed horror run-in with four top six clashes in six weeks

CHELSEA will face a London derby against Crystal Palace to kick-start their Premier League season after a gruelling summer.

Enzo Maresca‘s side battled to a respectable fourth place in the league last season, while also completing the Uefa set by adding the Uefa Conference League to their trophy collection.

But they will get no sympathy from rivals following a gruelling Club World Cup campaign[/caption]

However, a gruelling summer at the Club World Cup – which started with a 2-0 win over LAFC on Monday – means Maresca’s squad will be short on pre-season training time.

And the Stamford Bridge outfit will get no sympathy from rivals after they discovered their fixture schedule for the upcoming 2025/26 season, kicking off with a 2pm Sunday clash on August 17.

The London giants won’t need to travel far from home in the first four weeks of the season after being handed FOUR derbies in a row, with Palace giving way to matches against West Ham, Fulham and Brentford.

September 20 pits Chelsea away to Manchester United before hosting Brighton.

Champions Liverpool are pencilled in for October 4 in their last game before the first international break.

As we get into November, Tottenham will play host to Maresca’s side before Chelsea in turn host Arsenal at the end of the month.

The festive period sees Chelsea visit Newcastle before Christmas before hosting Aston Villa after.

The Blues take on Arsenal for the second time on February 28 before butting heads with Aston Villa and Newcastle in the following weeks.

Their run-in is no laughing matter either.

April sees Chelsea host both Man City and Man Utd in consecutive weeks before they pay a visit to Brighton.

The month of May may not be so merry with clashes against Nottingham Forest, Liverpool and Tottenham as their final home game before the final match of the season away at Sunderland.

Both sides would have been hoping to avoid a nightmare start in their quest for glory.

But the mouthwatering clash is just the first of many to kick off the new campaign.

The very first game of the season, which starts on August 15, sees champions Liverpool begin the defence of their title at home to Bournemouth with an 8pm kick-off on Sky Sports.

The next day’s TV games start with Newcastle’s travels to Aston Villa – which will be on TNT – before Man City take on Wolves at home.

On Sunday, viewers can enjoy Chelsea against Crystal Palace followed by United vs Arsenal.

And on Monday night, newly-promoted Leeds go up against Everton.

The other opening weekend fixtures, which are not on TV and start at 3pm on the Saturday, see Tottenham start life under Thomas Frank against promoted Burnley.

Brighton are at home to Fulham, with Brentford travelling to Nottingham Forest.

And finally, Sunderland begin their Premier League return by hosting West Ham.

But the drama is just beginning, with the next set of games seeing Liverpool go to Newcastle, Man City host Tottenham and Everton play their first-ever home game at their new £800million stadium against Brighton.

Heading to the Christmas period, Boxing Day serves up plenty of tasty treats including Chelsea vs Aston Villa and Man United vs Newcastle.

While the first games of 2026 see Man City face Chelsea and Man Utd at Leeds.

Looking towards the final day of the season, which takes place on May 24, there is sure to be plenty up for grabs.

Man United find themselves at Brighton, with Newcastle at home to Fulham.

Arsenal and Chelsea are away at Crystal Palace and Sunderland respectively.

While Man City face Aston Villa, Tottenham take on Everton and Liverpool play Brentford.

The other games are Burnley vs Wolves, Nottingham Forest vs Bournemouth and West Ham vs Leeds.

Liverpool will be hoping that club-record £100million signing Florian Wirtz can help them successfully defend their title.

But they are sure to face another challenge from Arsenal, who are desperate to not finish second for a fourth consecutive season.

Manchester City are also sure to be in the mix once more, having fallen off big time last term before embarking on a major spending spree.

As for Chelsea, they will also be looking to finally push on and challenge for the title after bolstering their squad ahead of a Champions League return.

Meanwhile, Manchester United are ready to make amends for their dismal performances under Ruben Amorim last term.

And Tottenham will usher in a new era after hiring Brentford’s Thomas Frank to replace Ange Postecoglou — who was sacked despite winning the Europa League final.

Arsenal Premier League fixtures: Mikel Arteta’s side get even HARDER start than last season with Man Utd on opening day

ARSENAL will face Manchester United on the opening day of the new Premier League season.

It’s the start of a horror opening run of fixtures as Mikel Arteta looks to finally get his hands on the Premier League title.

The Gunners kick off their campaign against Manchester United[/caption]

The 2025/26 campaign commences on Friday, August 15, and will run through to May 24, 2026.

Arteta‘s troops have finished their last THREE domestic campaigns in second place, with Manchester City and, most recently Liverpool, pipping them to the title.

The north Londoners will be hoping to go one better this coming season and end what will be the club’s 22-year wait for domestic glory.

And they’ve learned how their 2025/26 season will pan out.

First up is a trip to Old Trafford to kick off a difficult opening month, with newly promoted Leeds the first visitors to the Emirates.

A trip to Liverpool follows next in an early title clash – so Arteta will be keen to complete his transfer business early.

The tricky start continues after the first international break with Nottingham Forest and Manchester City the next two sides to visit North London.

Then the Gunners travel to Newcastle in what could be another top of the table clash.

It marks an incredibly hard start to the season for Arsenal – who memorably were given a tricky few opening matches last term as well.

October brings a London derby theme with games against West Ham, Fulham and Crystal Palace.

But fans will have to wait a little longer for the North London Derby this year – Arsenal host Tottenham on November 22 with the return fixture on February 21.

A trip to Stamford Bridge follows while Arteta’s side take on Brighton and Aston Villa over the festive period.

Premier League champions Liverpool come soon after on January 7, with United also playing at the Emirates in the same month.

Arsenal’s campaign finishes in much kinder fashion to how it begins, with clashes against Fulham, West Ham, Burnley and Crystal Palace in May.

Arteta will hope to field a wealth of summer signings for his troops’ first domestic match of what could be a make-or-break season for his tenure.

The Spaniard has yet to sign any reinforcement but has promised the Emirates faithful to expect several arrivals in the coming weeks.

He said of the transfer window: “It’s going to be a big one and we are very excited about it.

“The way we planned the first five summers, they were going to be very big and they were going to have different objectives.

“In the beginning, there were a lot of players with three, four or five-year contracts.

“So the turnaround of the squad and how you visualise the next five years was very dependent on that.

“There are certain positions we didn’t expect to have someone like Ethan Nwaneri or Myles Lewis-Skelly contributing to, which has been great.

“The way you start to evolve, you start to master certain things then the changes cannot be that much.

“That’s where we are. The line now is thinner, the margins are smaller.

“But the cost of that, as well, increases. So it goes a little bit in a different direction.

“We want to increase the depth of the squad.

“But as well, we want to increase the quality and the skills we need to go to the next step.

“It’s a big summer for many things because first of all we have to maintain the good foundations that we have and then obviously how can we improve and evolve the team.”
