Julie-Ann Russell ‘will forever cherish the memories’ as popular Ireland and Galway Utd star announces her retirement

Three of those came in 2024 as the Galway United star made a sensational return to the national fold after four years away.
Russell said: “After 24 incredible years, the time has come to step away from football.
“The game has been a central part of my life, providing unforgettable memories and opportunities that I will never forget.
“There are so many people who have had such a positive influence on my career – family, teammates, coaches, managers, volunteers and fans.
“It would be impossible to name everyone, but please know that I sincerely appreciate everything you’ve done to help me live my dream.
“While it’s bittersweet to say goodbye, I’m excited for the next chapter and will forever cherish the memories football has given me.”
The Moycullen-native enjoyed spells in the United States of America, England, and Australia during her storybook career.
It was Down Under that her four-year hiatus began during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Off the field, she gave birth to her daughter Rosie, who became a fixture of the Irish fold when Russell made her return last year.
What followed was three goals against England, France, and Georgia as she ended her tenure with seven goals in 66 caps.
FAI Chief Football Officer Marc Canham said: “Julie-Ann is a special player who will be remembered for her excellent performances, goals and assists in the SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division and for Ireland, where she will rightly be remembered as one of our finest players.
“We thank her for everything that she has done for Irish football.”
Russell was twice named SSE Airtricity Women‘s Premier Division Player of the Year, in 2014 and 2024, while she was named in the Team of the Season three times.
She won a league title with Peamount United in 2012 and ended her career back at her home club of Galway United.
Paying tribute, Galway head coach Phil Trill said: “We’d like to congratulate Julie-Ann on an absolutely amazing career, she gave us so many highs as a football community in Galway.
“I’m very privileged to have worked with her for the last number of years and can see why she will leave such a legacy.
“We’re very proud, as Galway United, to have her play with us in the club, and also to lift a trophy with us in Tallaght last year. That was very special.
“Then, to see her at Páirc Uí Chaoimh last year, putting on a show, that was just incredible, and it is something we’re very proud of.
“She is a trailblazer for young girls in Ireland, a real role model, a top level professional all the way through, and just a great person.
“We wish her all the best, and we know she won’t be far away.”

Bulgarian man, 34, replies ‘guilty’ in court to role in smuggling €21.6m of coke into Ireland from Brazil on cargo ship
A BULGARIAN man has admitted his role in smuggling over €20million worth of cocaine to Ireland from Brazil, a court heard today.
Nikola Penchev, 34, pleaded guilty before Limerick Circuit Criminal Court to one count of possession of cocaine in excess of €13,000 for sale or supply, contrary to Section 15 (A) of the Misuse of Drugs Act.
![a double decker bus is driving down the street](https://www.thesun.ie/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2024/09/97703f14-69c7-47fa-8b6f-febdf2b4b617.jpg?strip=all&w=960)

Penchev, with an address at Velicki, Preslav, Bulgaria, spoke only to confer his “guilty” plea during the brief court hearing, Thursday.
The offence carries a mandatory prescriptive minimum ten-year jail sentence unless a court finds extenuating exceptional circumstances that would allow a reduced term.
The €21.6million total cocaine haul was smuggled on board the MV Verila cargo ship, which travelled from Brazil to Canada and onto Foynes Port, Co Limerick, bringing with it a legal consignment of sugar and grain.
The drugs were discovered by Revenue Customs officers who searched the ship after it had docked at Foynes Port, on December 19, 2023.
The drugs were to be dropped overboard and collected for transportation across Ireland and the rest of Europe, but this did not happen.
After pleading guilty, Penchev was remanded in continuing custody for sentence on April 9.
A co-accused man, Kamen Petkov, also from Bulgaria, who pleaded guilty to the same offence was jailed for ten years last December.
Judge Colin Daly told Petkov’s sentencing hearing that Petkov had been in control of “such a large quantity of drugs that it was impossible not to conclude that thousands of lives would have been affected by such a volume of drugs”.
Petkov, 36, told Gardai, following his arrest, that he had agreed to smuggle the drugs for a €150,000 fee, as he had massive gambling debts.
Judge Daly said Petkov “facilitated organised crime internationally for a significant reward”.
Detective Garda Adrian Cahill, Limerick Divisional Drugs Unit, told the sentencing hearing that the cocaine found on board the vessel was “pure cocaine, with a potential value of five times that amount on the street” estimated at €105million.
A total of 12 bales of cocaine were discovered hidden in an air-conditioning room on the bulk vessel.
The Maltese registered vessel sailed on to Santos Port, Brazil, and Hamilton Port, Canada, before reaching Foynes.
Major new £400million city development with tourist attractions and riverside restaurants to open by 2029
PART of London’s South Bank will be transformed in the next few years thanks to a huge new development taking place in the city.
Nicknamed ‘The Slab’, the site previously housed the old headquarters of ITV, but has been vacant since 2018.

Planning permission for the redevelopment of 72 Upper Ground was granted back in December.
Over the next four years, developers Mitsubishi Estate plan to transform the site into a mixed-use space, as reported by City AM.
Estimated to cost as much as £400million, images of the development show outdoor green spaces and walkways.
Another image features riverside restaurants and bars overlooking the Thames, with a rooftop restaurant also listed under the plans.
When the 2.5 acre site opens in 2029, it will be home to cafes, cultural venues and green spaces.
Other features are set to include biodiverse roofs for wildlife and outdoor terraces.
Further details, including the brands of restaurants and the type of cultural venues, have yet to be revealed.
Shinichi Kagitomi, Chief Executive of Mitsubishi Estate London, described the redevelopment as a “significant positive contribution” to London’s Southbank.
Demolition work is currently underway, after developers won a court battle last year.
Until the site opens, there are plenty of attractions to keep visitors entertained in London’s South Bank.
One of the South Bank’s most well-known attractions is the London Eye.
There’s also the Southbank Centre, which is home to the Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, and the Hayward Gallery.
Visitors who want to take in a show should head to either Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre or the National Theatre.
Other attractions include Skateboarding at the Undercroft, Leake Street Arches and the BFI Southbank.
Several other huge developments are also taking place across the English capital, including a huge £125million redevelopment taking place in Ealing.
The Ealing development will include a leisure centre with a 50 metre Olympic swimming pool.
Slated to open in 2027, the new London attraction will include a waterpark with slides and a lazy river.
There will also be a soft play zone, a gym, a creche for kids, and a cafe.
Outside attractions will include a skate park and a playground.
Elsewhere in London, a neighbourhood is getting a huge £10billion renovation.
The huge redevelopment includes a large kids’ playground and climbing attraction, as well as gardens, restaurants, and ‘cultural venues’.

LONDON is chock full of fantastic pubs.
Whether you’re looking for an old man’s boozer, a gastro pub or a cosy pitstop with a roaring fire, there is the perfect pub for everyone in the capital.
My top tip? Try to avoid the ones in the tourist spots of Covent Garden, Leicester Square, and so on, unless you’ve got a recommendation. No self-respecting Londoner would be seen dead in them.

Six Nations sees FIVE never-before-seen rules introduced for 2025 including 20-minute red cards and no ‘escorts’

Ireland, who kick off their tournament against England on Saturday, will look to become the first-ever team to win THREE STRAIGHT titles.
The next five weeks will provide a glut of rugby for fans to feast their eyes on.
Although players and fans alike will have to get used to several changes this tournament.
And SunSport is on hand to run through the changes you’ll see in this season’s competiion.
20-minute red cards
The most contentious change, pushed through despite the objections of Ireland and France, will see accidental head contact offences punished less draconically.
While players adjudged guilty of head contact “technical offences” will not be allowed to return to the field they can be replaced after 20 minutes.
Plenty of coaches had complained that dismissals for accidental contact had ruined too many games although the Irish and French argued that player safety would be compromised.

If a player is sent off for deliberate or dangerous play, they cannot be replaced.
Scrum-half protection
The offside line for opponents is now the mid-point of the scrum, rather than the back foot of the No 8.
That means scrum halves will now be able to play without pressure as opponents are not allowed within a metre until the ball is out.
Conversion shot clock
Kickers will have 60 seconds to tag on the extra two points, matching the limit for penalty goals.
Teams will only have 30 seconds to form a line-out or scrum.
![Finn Russell kicking a rugby ball during a match.](https://www.thesun.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/scotlands-finn-russell-scores-conversion-887583431.jpg?strip=all&w=960)
Aerial tennis – and no “escorts”
The new offside law, introduced for the Autumn Series and now being used in the Six Nations for the first time, means players are no longer played onside once the opponent under a high ball has made five metres.
Players in front of the kick must retreat.
But team-mates of the catcher – “escorts” – will be penalised if they block off attacking runners to make it easier to field the ball.
Line-out technology
The ball, with a “Touchfinder” chip inside, will be tracked by computer to ensure the line-out takes place where the ball crossed the touchline.
![Rugby player jumping for a lineout.](https://www.thesun.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/167edd93-798d-49ff-88ae-419efb7970c5.jpg?strip=all&w=960)
