Ireland captain Caelan Doris backs Sam Prendergast to pass ‘ultimate test’ in Six Nations bow vs England
CAELAN DORIS has backed Sam Prendergast to rise to the occasion on his Six Nations debut tomorrow.
Leinster outhalf Prendergast has been selected ahead of Jack Crowley to steer Ireland as they kick off their hunt for a third Championship in a row against England.
It will just be the 21-year-old’s third cap, but Doris has no doubt that the Kildare man is ready having been bowled over by his performances with Leinster.
Ireland captain Doris said: “He’s shown his quality, first of all at 20s.
“Some of the stuff he was capable of doing back then caught the eye definitely and he’s probably had quite a big reputation from that.
“He’s carried through and shown his quality at URC, at European level and at international level in the autumn.
“It’s been a good ride for him and he’s a very confident guy and loves controlling the forwards, loves playing what’s in front of him so there’s a lot of faith in him.”
Doris also reckons that such a big encounter to kick off the Six Nations will not faze him, as Ireland also look for revenge for last year’s encounter when a loss denied them the Grand Slam.
He added: “It’s always the ultimate test coming up against these guys.
“There’s a rich history and a massive rivalry there over the last number of years.
“We’d had a pretty good run (last year), fourth round going in over there and there was a lot of belief, we also respected them massively and knew that there was a big performance brewing from them.
“We only have two home games this year and starting off here in Dublin against England it doesn’t get much better or bigger than this.
“For me growing up the Six Nations was such a big thing and I remember the games against England in particular so to be involved in one is very exciting.
“It would be incredibly special (to win a third Six Nations title in a row).
“It’s hard to cast your mind forward to that, given how big a game this is starting up.
“We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves, definitely, but we also realise that getting this weekend right is a crucial step if we want to go and do something special like that.”
Horror movie legend set for surprise comeback to smash hit franchise – 30 years after being killed off
HORROR movie fans are in for a real treat thanks to the return of a slasher legend.
Matthew Lillard appears to have confirmed he is making a comeback to the Scream franchise 30 years on from the original film.
Matthew Lillard has confirmed his comeback for Scream 7[/caption] Matthew’s character Stu Macher said ‘his parents were going to be so mad’ in the 1996 movie[/caption] Scream 7 is released next month and features many of the original 90s stars[/caption]The actor, 55, sent fans into a tailspin after appearing to drop the huge news on social media ahead of the release of Scream 7.
Matthew’s killer character Stu Macher came to a grisly end himself in 1996 thanks to Sidney, played by Neve Campbell.
Taking to Instagram, Matthew shared a video of a man hand writing a note to his parents – hinting that Stu isn’t dead after all.
It reads: “My mom and dad are going to be so mad at me!!”
Scream fanatics will remember that weak-willed Stu cried this exact phrase down the phone during the original movie.
Caked in blood, he wailed: “My mom and dad are going to be so mad at me!”
Moments earlier, he and his killer friend Billy Loomis – who was the mastermind of their plot – had stabbed each other to make themselves look like the victims.
Moments later, Sidney got revenge and dropped a massive television set on Stu’s head.
Billy, meanwhile, eventually met his maker later when Sidney shot him in the head.
Fans have gone wild for Matthew’s Instagram post, with one commenting: “IS THIS WHAT I THINK IT MEANS?!?!”
Another added: “Stu said he’d bE RIGHT BACK!!!!!!!!”
A third begged: “Please be in Scream 7”
And a fourth chimed in: “Jaw.. on … the… ground.”
Deadline has since confirmed that Matthew will be starring in Scream 7 when it is released next month.
The Descendants and Scooby Doo actor will join Scream OGs Neve and Courteney Cox in the highly-anticipated movie.
They will also be joined by former Scream stars Scott Foley, Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown. New cast members will also appear in the film.
It is not known exactly how Matthew’s character Stu will return, given that his character is dead.
However, over the decades, fan theories have been rife that the eccentric high schooler never did die.
‘STILL ALIVE’
Last October, Matthew even appeared to confirm the fan theory himself during an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show.
Drew, who played Casey Becker in Scream, picked up a telephone and discovered Ghostface was on the other end.
Ghostface asked her in his iconic voice: “Have you missed me? I missed you. Do you still like scary movies?”
The spooky character told Drew she had a surprise guest joining her, before Matthew appeared on set.
Drew’s co-host Ross Mathews said there was never confirmation Casey Becker had died, to which Matthew replied: “Listen, Stu is definitely alive!
“Right? My character Stu is definitely alive?”
Ross asked: “Could we see Stu come back in another Scream?”
Matthew told him: “That would be fun. Wouldn’t that be fun? I would love it. If it made sense for the franchise, then sure, obviously. I’m very sl*tty!”
The official plot line for Scream 7 has been kept a tight secret.
It is released worldwide on February 27, 2025.

Gabriel having it out with Haaland and ANOTHER Arsenal red could be knockout value as Weekend Wagers reveals best bets
SUNSPORT’S Weekend Wager uses in-depth stats and cutting-edge analysis to unearth the best value bets ahead of the sporting weekend.
Joining our very own Will Pugh this week is football journalist Kweku Afari and betting expert Sam Rosbottom, who will be looking for the best value on a packed two days of action.
SunSport’s Weekend Wager team are finding the best value bets for this weekend[/caption]There’s plenty at stake when Man City travel to rivals Arsenal on Sunday, with Erling Haaland and Gabriel Magalhaes set to renew their rivalry.
There’s also a derby in the Midlands as Wolves host an Aston Villa side with a depleted backline.
And punters can also look forward to some tasty tips for the Six Nations, as well as some horse racing.
Check out all our best bets for the weekend below:
Could there be another red card for Arsenal this weekend?[/caption]ARSENAL VS MAN CITY
Kweku Afari: “My tip is Arsenal to receive a red card at 17/2.
“Ill discipline has underpinned Arsenal ever since Mikel Arteta took charge.
“Arsenal have received 19 red cards since he took over in December 2019, the most in the Premier League.
“There’s been reds this season for Declan Rice, Leandro Trossard, William Saliba and Myles Lewis-Skelly.
“Four reds, the most in the Premier League so far.
“And I fully expect that to continue this weekend.”
Erling Haaland and Gabriel Magalhaes could clash heads again[/caption]Will Pugh: “I have gone for Gabriel Magalhaes to be fouled two or more times in the game at 4/1.
“The Gabriel/Erling Haaland battle that is going to ensue…
“Gabriel has been fouled 11 times in the last 10 games.
“Haaland has committed seven fouls in the last 11 matches.
“They’ve got history. I just fancy them going head to head.”
Josko Gvardiol is sure to be a threat for City[/caption]Sam Rosbottom: “Looking at other markets that take my fancy, Josko Gvardiol to have two shots or more in the match at 11/4 is a tasty price for me.
“It’s one of those you can throw into a bet builder, set pieces could be big in this game.
“He’s had 12 shots in his last eight Premier League games.
“He’s the league’s top-scoring defender at the minute with five goals.
“And he’s also City’s third-top scorer.”
SunSport’s best Arsenal vs Man City bets
- Arsenal to receive a red card: 17/2
- Gabriel Magalhaes to be fouled 2+ times: 4/1
- Josko Gvardiol to have 2+ shots: 11/4
WOLVES VS ASTON VILLA
Kweku Afari: “Huge game. Ezri Konsa to score at 12/1.
“This Villa team has suffered with injuries — Pau Torres, Tyrone Mings, Amadou Onana.
“Konsa is a threat in the box. He’s only scored once in 21 games but he will be their focal point at set pieces.
“Wolves have conceded 303 fouls in the league — only second to Bournemouth on 309.
“There’s going to be lots of balls going into Wolves’ box from Villa and I expect Konsa to be busy.
“Now this stat is going to blow your mind. Wolves have shipped in 19 set-piece goals this season — excluding penalties — the most of any side.
“The only side who conceded 20 in a season were Spurs in the 07/08 season and I expect Wolves to beat that this weekend.”
Jorgen Strand Larsen has made the second-most runs into the opposition box this season[/caption]Will Pugh: “Talking of brave, Jorgen Strand Larsen to have 2+ shots on target in the game at 5/2.
“Only Dominic Solanke, with 237, has had more runs into the opposition’s penalty area this season than Strand Larsen on 210.
“And 80 of those 210 runs into the area have been targeted by passes by a Wolves player.
“He’s had 10 shots on target in his last eight league matches. And he’s had at least one shot on target in six of those last eight games.
“With Mings’ injury and Villa’s defensive frailties, I fancy he’ll get a lot of opportunities.”
Youri Tielemans loves a shot from distance[/caption]Sam Rosbottom: “Straight in there, Youri Tielemans to have two or more shots at 9/5.
“It’s a great option to have for a bet builder. He’s had nine shots in his last five Premier League starts.
“He had two blocked shots and one unblocked shot against West Ham.
“When Wolves mark players, I think Tielemans will fly under the radar and he does get forward and into the box.”
SunSport's best Wolves vs Aston Villa bets
- Ezri Konsa to score: 12/1
- Jorgen Strand Larsen to have 2+ shots on target: 5/2
- Youri Tielemans to have 2+ shots: 9/5
DUBLIN RACING FESTIVAL
Sam Rosbottom: “There’s one race that stands out for me and it’s the Irish Gold Cup.
“Galopin Des Champs coming up against Fact To File.
“Going into this race they’ve had two races so far this season up against each other. It’s currently 1-1.
“Galopin Des Champs is the favourite in this at 4/7. While Fact to File is currently 7/2.
“Whoever wins, we’re likely to see some implication for the Cheltenham anti-post Gold Cup market as well.
“For the Cheltenham Gold Cup, Galopin Des Champs is favourite at 4/5, going for three in a row.
“But if Fact to File wins on Saturday it could shake the market up completely.
“Fact to File is 4/1 for the Gold Cup. But it’s a big ask. Galopin is a really strong horse and it would be a big surprise if it doesn’t do the business this weekend.”
SunSport's best racing bets
Dublin Racing Festival — Irish Gold Cup winner
- Galopin des Champs: 4/7
- Fact to File: 7/2
Cheltenham Racing Festival: Gold Cup winner
- Galopin des Champs: 4/5
- Fact to File: 4/1
IRELAND VS ENGLAND
Sam Rosbottom: “We’ve got the Lions tour this summer, players are going to want to play for that.
“Currently France are the favourites for the Six Nations at 6/4.
“Ireland could make history and become the only side to win three in a row at 7/4.
“England are 4/1 to win at the minute. 10 losses against the top four sides in 11 attempts.
“But the one win they did get in that time came in the Six Nations at Twickenham against Ireland, which stopped them winning the Grand Slam last year.
“It’s a massive game. But it’s not very patriotic. Ireland to win with a -6 handicap at Evens.
“Revenge is on the line, England have a lot to do still. Ireland look a sound bet.”
