My new girlfriend is in Alcoholics Anonymous but I don’t want to quit drinking

A young couple sits at a bar; one is drinking beer, the other looks away.
Getty

DEAR DEIDRE: I WANT to support my new girlfriend through the Alcoholics Anonymous 12 Step programme, but preferably without quitting booze.

She’s 26 and I’m 27.

We went to the same school but we were very different: She was dancing on tables in pubs, I was focused on college and work.

I bumped into her again recently.

She had calmed down and looked great.

We started dating and it’s going well.

But she just told me she is teetotal and working through the AA steps.

I want to support her but I love drinking when I go out.

Do I have to quit?

My son was sent home from university & is being investigated for sexual misconduct

A mother comforts her adult son.
Getty

DEAR DEIDRE: MY son was so excited to start university in September.

Now he has been sent home because another student accused him of sexual misconduct.

The police aren’t involved – the university is conducting its own investigation.

While it’s happening, my son isn’t allowed to visit the campus and he has to do his learning online.

He’s only 18 and he is terrified.

Everyone in his dorm went to a party just before Christmas.

He met a girl there. She was very drunk and all of her friends had left.

My son was concerned for her safety so he offered to walk her home.

They got to her room and she passed out on the bed.

He stayed overnight because he was worried she would choke on vomit in her sleep.

In the morning, they were intimate.

My son says it was consensual but she’s saying he took advantage of her while she was still drunk.

WEIGHT WORRIES

How do I help my son find the motivation to lose weight?

DEIDRE'S STORIES

Ian discovers Sarah's sexy secret but he wishes he hadn't

I believe my son is innocent, but I feel powerless to help him.

He is becoming withdrawn and I’m scared he is sinking into depression.

DEIDRE SAYS: Universities have the power to conduct investigations into alleged crimes, including sexual misconduct.

While these aren’t criminal inquiries, their findings can be passed on to the police.

I understand why you’re worried but this is a time for action, not panic.

Firstly, ensure your son contacts his GP about his mental health. It might help for him to get counselling or medication to ward off the risk of depression.

Then ask his university for an update on the investigation. They have to be transparent, so ensure you find out who is conducting it and how long it will take.

Tell your son to keep any evidence of that night. He should not contact the girl or use social media to talk about the incident. And look into getting legal advice.

Contact the False Allegations Support Organisation (false-allegations.org.uk, 03335 779 377) for free, confidential advice.

My widowed dad sent his online girlfriend £35,000 but won’t admit it’s a scam

Worried man working on laptop at home.
Getty

DEAR DEIDRE: ALTHOUGH my elderly dad is convinced he has met the perfect woman online, I’m sure he’s being scammed.

Dad is 75. He was widowed when my mum died six years ago.

He seemed lonely and depressed, so I encouraged him to get out and socialise again.

Soon after, he told me he had met a beautiful younger woman online.

Alarm bells rang when he said she was 29 and in the photos he showed us, she was stunning.

Dad said she was in the Philippines but that they messaged every day.

About 18 months ago, Dad said she was on her way to visit him in the UK.

He cleaned his house from top to bottom and bought her roses and chocolates.

She never arrived.

According to Dad, she is still travelling. Apparently, she keeps running into problems at different airports.

Currently, she is stranded in Romania. Every time she gets stuck, he sends her money to buy a new visa or cover her legal bills.

He initially refused to say how much he’d spent. Then I spotted a final demand for his electricity, and he admitted he has sent her all his savings (£35,000) and is now in the process of releasing equity out of his house.

No matter how often I warn him he’s being scammed, he won’t hear it.

I copied her photo and looked her up online. The photo she’s using belongs to a completely different person.

I am so worried about my dad. He is a very stubborn man and simply refuses to believe that this is fake.

DEIDRE SAYS: Your dad is refusing to accept he has been scammed because he hates the idea of feeling lonely and unloved again. Even a fake girlfriend is better than none.

My support pack Love Online explains the dangers of internet romance fraud, including all the warning signs. Please ask your father to read it.

Regarding the money he has already sent, I suggest you both go and talk to his bank together.

There might be a chance they would refund it, but even if they don’t, the bank must be made aware of this fraudster’s account details.

Your father could be just one of many victims.

You can also take a look at actionfraud.police.uk for advice on dating fraud.

If you can send him that link and encourage him to read it, he might realise he is being tricked and cut off contact with this person.

I keep dreaming about my ex from 20 years ago – is he still missing me?

Middle-aged woman lying in bed, smiling.

DEAR DEIDRE: WHAT does it mean when you keep dreaming about an old flame?

My ex finished our relationship 20 years ago.

He married someone else and moved away.

We’re both in our 60s now. I never wed.

My only contact with him is seeing his posts on social media.

Recently he shared on Facebook that his mum had died.

Since then, I’ve had three vivid dreams about him.

In them, we’re a couple again and I wake up happy.

My friend said dreaming about someone means they are missing you.

Should I reach out to him?

Chloe Brockett hits back at troll after they mock boyfriend Jack Fincham’s jail sentence on sexy lingerie post

CHLOE Brockett furiously hit back as a troll mocked her boyfriend Jack Fincham’s jail sentence.

Towie star Chloe, 24, shared a stunning mirror selfie video of herself modeling red lingerie on Instagram today.

She wrote in her caption: “It’s nearly Valentine’s Day.. what have you girls asked for?”

But one follower left a cruel comment following Jack’s six-week jail sentence, which he received after pleading guilty to two charges of being in charge of a dangerously out-of-control dog.

He was released on bail on Wednesday, pending an appeal.

They wrote: “Roses are red, violets are blue, a Valentine who’s not jail would be nice too!”

Chloe soon retaliated: Lluckily for me mines at home.. and you’re here hating from your phone.”

Writing the troll’s username, she added: “”ears sunglasses to hide how much of an a** he is.”

While he appeals his sentence, Jack has been freed from a short stint in jail and Chloe is sticking by him throughout the next stages.

Sharing a picture on Instagram of them cuddled on the sofa, Chloe simply wrote today: “Love you then @jack_charlesf.”

In the snap, Chloe was seen snuggling into Jack’s cheek while they both stare at the camera.

She had previously cried in the courtroom when Jack’s conviction and sentence was read out, but he was released just two hours later.

A pal told The Sun: “When the judge handed Jack a custodial sentence Chloe screamed out ‘no’. She was hysterical and had to be supported by family members as she repeatedly said ‘what am I going do without my best friend?’

“Jack tried to reassure Chloe by putting a thumbs up but that did nothing to calm Chloe as she was supported out of court.”

“People forget how young Chloe is because she’s been on our screens for so long but it’s a lot to deal with for a 24 year old girl,” they added.

“She was willing to pay anything to get Jack out on bail and home with her.

“The shock of thinking they would have to spend six weeks apart has brought them closer together.

“Chloe is Jack’s rock right now.”

Jack’s sog Elvis bit runner Robert Sudell in 2022 in Swanley, Kent, and attacked a woman in Grays, Essex, last June.

In court, he admitted two counts of being in charge of a dangerously out-of-control dog, with one of the incidents causing injury.

After the first incident in September 2022, Jack attended a dog behaviour course, and was given three rules to follow in order to avoid further trouble.

These were to always keep the dog on the lead, for the dog to wear a muzzle when outside and to not leave the animal alone with anyone under the age of 16.

His failure to comply let to the second incident in June 2024.

As part of the sentence, Jack was also ordered to pay £3,680 – including £200 compensation fee to Robert and a £50 compensation fee to the other victim.

But in December, prior to the trial, Jack took aim at the police in now-deleted Instagram messages, claiming the authorities wanted to jail him because his dog “scared someone”.

He wrote: “So my best friend is gone in police kennels.”

Comparing his situation to that of a rapist who avoided jail because of overcrowding, he said: “This county is done. Work it out for fs sake.”

And under a pic of himself smiling with his cane corso dog Elvis, he wrote: “F*** Essex Police, scumbags and jobsworth c***s. See you soon.”
