‘A horrendous tragedy’ – Tributes pour in for man killed in Roscommon fire as plans to adapt home for partner revealed

TRIBUTES are being paid to a devoted partner who died in a horror house fire in Roscommon on Wednesday evening.

Tragic Des Deegan, 72, who died in a blaze at a home in The Oaks, Frenchpark, Co Roscommon, was planning to adapt his home for his partner, who has been in rehabilitation for the past two years.

Emergency services attended the scene after a report shortly before 7pm on Wednesday evening.

It is understood that the fire completely destroyed the house in The Oaks estate.

And it is still unclear what caused the fire.

Mr Deegan, who is originally from Dublin died at the scene.

His body was removed and taken to Galway University Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Roscommon and Galway TD Claire Kerrane took to social media to pay tribute to the devoted partner.

She said: “Terrible news confirmed this morning that a gentleman has died in the house fire. A horrendous tragedy.

“May his gentle soul rest in peace. As a community, I know we will rally around to support in any way we can.

“Des Deegan was one of the nicest people I’ve met as part of my work. It was always a pleasure to deal with him.

“My deepest condolences to his beloved partner and to his family.”

Locals added that Mr Deegan was a devoted partner to Alice Hetherton, 63, who suffered a bleed on the brain and an aneurysm in May 2023.

She has been in rehabilitation for the past two years.

Mr Deegan had launched a fundraiser to help with the financial burden of bringing Alice home.

The fundraiser was created on April 25, with a set target of raising €70,000.

Some €6,953 has been raised so far with over 101 donations.

The couple have met in London but had lived at Frenchpark for the past 25 years.

Mr Deegan wrote at the time: “I’ve started this fundraiser on behalf of my partner Alice Hetherton, formerly of Oldcastle Co Meath.

“Alice is 63 years old, she has worked all her life caring for others as a care worker in hospitals and nursing homes across the UK and Ireland.

“Ironically Alice finds herself now in need of the support she has given to others.”

He continued: “Beaumont Hospital performed neurosurgery to stop the bleed and equally deal with the aneurysm.

“The Surgeon noted it was one of the worst cases he had seen.

“Alice has been in rehabilitation for the past two years. Her mobility is very restricted and she will require continued home supports and therapies.

“Alice is frustrated that the care she is currently receiving in a nursing home could equally be carried out at home.”

No funeral arrangements have been made as yet.

Rob Kearney’s hilarious boozy night out story after infamous lowpoint in Brian O’Driscoll’s Lions career

EVEN stories about Brian O’Driscoll’s darkest days tend to paint him in a good light.

So it proved as Rob Kearney recalled him getting dropped for the third Test of the British and Irish Lions’ 2013 Tour of Australia.

Rob Kearney, Virgin Media analyst, holding a Virgin TV rugby ball.

There was outrage in Ireland when Warren Gatland dropped O’Driscoll for the third Test against Australia
Sportsfile - Subscription

Kearney teed things up by recalling how when O’Driscoll was initially called to a meeting with head coach Warren Gatland, the assumption was that he was going to be made captain for it.

He cited how their fellow Ireland legend Paul O’Connell had broken his arm in the previous match-up whilst Sam Warburton had also gotten injured so a new leader had to be selected.

Kearney told the Indo Sport podcast: “It was a weird atmosphere (when O’Driscoll got back and told them he was being omitted from the matchday 23).

“All the players were shocked. But Brian mucked in to be fair to him.

“Some of us went out for drinks that night and I texted him ‘Are you coming down to the pub for a few pints?’

“But he replied ‘No, I’m doing video analysis with Jonathan Davies’. So I responded ‘You’re a bigger man than me!’

“It was class of him because it would’ve been very easy for him to say ‘Sod all of this, I’m going on the beer.’

“Especially because Twitter was around then so we were able to feel the absolute uproar and rage from back home here.”

Host Joe Molloy tacked on the point that it’s not like the then 34-year-old had to keep in Gatland’s good books in case he was in charge of the next Tour in 2017.

Ultimately, the Kiwi was able to point to the result in that third match-up with the Wallabies to justify his contentious selection call as they walloped their hosts 41-16 to secure a 2-1 series triumph.

They had been pipped 16-15 in the previous encounter while they took the first battle 23-21.

Kearney predicted another 2-1 victory for the all-star squad in this summer’s edition of the fabled rugby tradition.

Andy Farrell’s outfit play the first of 10 total fixtures this evening at the Aviva Stadium in what could prove a very tall task against Argentina.

Wednesday saw him name his starting XV for the 8pm kick-off. The headline item from it was that Tadhg Furlong looks set to be handed a chance to prove his fitness, albeit off the bench.

The prop has not played since Leinster’s Champions Cup semi-final defeat to Northampton because of a calf injury.

He is joined in the replacements by Rónan Kelleher, the only other Leinster player involved because they were involved in the URC final win over Bulls at the weekend, in which the hooker came off the bench.

There are still three Irish players in the starting XV with 2021 tourists Bundee Aki of Connacht and Munster’s Tadhg Beirne included, along with Bealham.

Aki and Bealham’s provincial teammate Mack Hansen is also included among the replacements.

Farrell has not included any Bath representatives with the side involved in the Premiership final against Leicester Tigers on Saturday.

Lions: M Smith (England), Freeman (England), Tuipulotu (Scotland), Aki (Ireland), van der Merwe (Scotland), F Smith (England), Mitchell (England), Genge (England), Cowan-Dickie (England), Bealham (Ireland), Itoje (England), Beirne (Ireland), Curry (England), Morgan (Wales), Earl (England).

Replacements: Kelleher (Ireland), Schoeman (Scotland), Furlong (Ireland), Cummings (Scotland), Pollock (England), Williams (Wales), Daly (England), Hansen (Ireland)

We asked 12 beauty experts to spill on their favourite beauty buys – some cost £450, others just £2

An image collage containing 2 images, Image 1 shows Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse multi-purpose dry oil bottle, Image 2 shows Close-up of two women's faces touching

IN the wise words of Jessie J, it’s not about the money where beauty buying is concerned.

In fact, more than a third of Boots Advantage Card members shopped for both budget-friendly make-up and premium cosmetics in 2024, focusing their attention not on how much products costs but on what really works – not something that’s always easy to work out.

To find out where we should be spending our money, and what products we can save on, we asked 10 industry experts for their favourite budget beauty product, and the one they will shell out for.

I’m a huge fan of high street beauty, as there are so many brilliant products lining the shelves today, you really don’t have to spend loads to arm yourself with hard-working products.

However, if I’m going to splurge, it’s almost always on skincare.

ARKIVE The Prologue Hair Primer, £4.50

I talk about ARKIVE The Prologue Hair Primer, £4.50, on an almost daily basis. In fact, when I told Beauty Writer Mia that I was going to make it my budget pick, she replied: “I knew it!” immediately.

It’s super lightweight, yet it still dissolves tangles and manages to leave hair noticeably softer and more shiny – while also protecting it from heat – without leaving any residue behind.

It’s impossible to use too much, so if you have fine hair like me, you don’t need to worry about it feeling dirty or limp.

Tatcha The Silk Cream, £123

I discovered Tatcha The Silk Cream, £123, in the Fabulous beauty cupboard over two years ago and started slathering it on my face.

Within days, I was getting compliments on how good my skin looked, including one from a fellow beauty editor well versed in my history of acne, who exclaimed: “Your skin looks like porcelain!” before we’d even said hello.

I’d used it for a week before I googled the price, and I instantly started using a tiny pea-sized amount to try to make the tub last longer, thinking I’d never be able to justify a repurchase.

Unfortunately for my bank balance, I’ve not found a cheaper moisturiser that compares, and have since re-stocked multiple times.

Pretty UK beach compared to Portugal and California named one of the best in the world

THE most iconic beaches in the world have been revealed, and one is in the UK.

Durdle Door in Dorset has been named by National Geographic in the list of must-see beaches which includes other coastlines in Australia and the Seychelles.

The beach gets its name from the unique rock formation[/caption]

National Geographic has declared Durdle Door as a beach “worth travelling for” because of its “showstopper” shore and rock formations.

The beach on the Jurassic Coast is known for its unique natural limestone arch.

The world-famous Durdle Door arch formed over millions of years by erosion caused by the crashing sea.

The beach is a popular spot with approximately 500,000 visitors going to see the impressive coastline every year.

While it may be the only UK beach on the list, Durdle Door has been likened to beaches overseas, especially in the summer.

In recent years, beach-goers have taken to Tripadvisor to rave about the Durdle Door that they’ve likened to beaches in Portugal or California.

One person wrote: “Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door: Reminded me of the Algarve in Portugal!”

Another added: “You don’t feel like you are in the UK. It seems more like Portugal or California.”

Durdle Door is such a famous beach that it’s even been used in TV series.

In recent years, TV shows like Doctor Who and Far From the Madding Crowd have also been filmed on the beach.

The second season of The Sandman starring Jenna Coleman was also filmed at the holiday hotspot.

The beach has also welcomed the likes of Hollywood when it was used as the backdrop for Pirates of the Caribbean.

The village nearest to Durdle Door is West Lulworth, a beautiful village known for its thatched cottages and window boxes.

Assistant Travel Editor Sophie Swietochowski visited Durdle Door, and revealed that it’s actually like.

Sophie said: “Despite the Jurassic Coast being one of the most well-known spots for rambling in the UK, it has managed to remain gloriously peaceful.

“I barely passed another soul during a Sunday hike along the rugged coastal path above Durdle Door a few years back – only a herd of cows munching on the unkempt grass at the top of the cliff.

“Admittedly, things grew a little busier as I approached Lulworth Cove.

“But that’s no surprise with a horseshoe-shaped pebble bay and turquoise waters that could rival those in the Caribbean.”

These are the six cleanest beaches in the UK where you can safely swim in the sea this summer.

Plus the world’s best beaches with one in the UK making the list – alongside Thailand and Bahamas.

Love Island fans beg ‘doormat’ Helena to have some self respect after Harry’s womanising is exposed in brutal villa game

LOVE Island fans have begged Helena to stop being a “doormat” and dump Harry for good.

Last night Harry’s womanising ways were exposed in a brutal game as he finally admitted to snogging Yasmin in the Hideaway.

Earlier that day, the pair enjoyed a cosy chat in the private area and kissed THREE times.

But despite their snog, neither Harry nor Yasmin admitted to it when they returned from the Hideaway.

That was until their actions were exposed in a brutal firepit game on Thursday night.

Helena was left in shock as Yasmin revealed they’d kissed not once, but three times.

And while Harry smirked, the stunning air hostess was backed by co-star Megan.

“You’re a liar,” Megan shouted across the firepit to Harry, adding: “You owe it to Helena to be f****** honest, you p****.

“She’s sat there watching you go into the Hideaway, you kissed her three times and then come out and go ‘Oh no, I didn’t do anything.’”

Meg finished by telling Harry: “Grow a pair of b******* mate, honestly, grow the f*** up.”

After her sweary rant at the scandalous star, Helena got up and stormed off from the group as Remell said: “I think we should wrap it up here.”

While Helena could be seen storming off as Harry showed no sign of remorse.

ITV2 viewers have begged Helena to dump Harry.

One wrote: ” “Helena is like a doormat Love Island.”

A second posted: “Helena is a weak babe, she needs to bump Harry.”

“Helena needs to move on and have some self respect,” a third said.

Another added: “Helena is such a door mat and Harry knows that, he’s a massive player but she’s clinging on to him.”

There were more fireworks earlier in the game when it was revealed Yasmin said she’d like Harry to “tip her upside down”.

Elsewhere, Conor read out a comment from Dejon that ruffled Meg’s feathers.

Dejon previously told the boys about Yasmin: “She’s never orgasmed, so if I give her her first orgasm, then she’ll fall in love.”

After Conor read out the comment, Yasmin said to the group: “I mean, if you can make me orgasm, fair play. I probably will fall in love.”

Things go from bad to worse when Remell read out a remark that Harry made to the boys about wanting to kiss Yasmin.

Helena yelled: “What the f*** is going on here?”

Megan exclaimed: “He tells you f*** all and that’s why, you need to find out and hear it for yourself.”

I live in a council house with no storage & made a dream dressing table for £21… it’s great for those with limited space

A MOTHER who lives in a council house with no storage has shared how she made her dream dressing table whilst on a budget.

So if your pad has limited space but you want somewhere you can sit and get ready in the mornings, you’ve come to the right place and won’t want to miss this.

Crystal Jewell, a 32-year-old mum-of-two from the UK, was able to transform her council house and create a dressing table of dreams for just £21 – yes, you heard that correctly.

The savvy DIY enthusiast nabbed bargain buys from The Range for her bedroom’s makeover and took to social media to give her followers a before, during and after look at the overhaul, leaving many totally stunned.

Alongside the short clip, the brunette beauty beamed: “Dressing table space saver hack!!”

Crystal then said: “Do you want a dressing table but don’t have enough room? I’m gonna show you how you can make one for only £21.”

Disappointed with the storage in her council property, Crystal explained: “Let’s not even go there with the storage – I have nowhere to store anything in this house, so I just have baskets here, there and everywhere filled with c**p that I will probably never even need.”

As a result, she shared: “I went to The Range yesterday, picked up a free wallpaper sample, then I picked up two floating shelves that were only £8 each.

“I actually cannot wait to have somewhere to sit, do my hair and do my make-up.”

After giving the wall next to her wardrobe a lick of paint, Crystal added her trendy panel-effect wallpaper sample and continued: “I know you’re all wondering why I haven’t done the wallpaper down to the floor – I’m gonna cut it into the bottom shelf and just paint the bottom of the wall.”

Following this, she attached her floating shelves and a mirror she bought for just £5 in the sale.

Thrilled with the finished look, the DIY fan beamed: “Now I’m just gonna decorate it with all the little bits that I already have lying around the house.”

To finish off the dressing table, Crystal added wicker baskets, a vase with pampas grass and a white jewellery box.

We think Crystal’s DIY dressing table is gorgeous and it’s clear that many others do too, as the TikTok clip, which was posted under the username @crystal.jewell3, has quickly racked up 204,800 views.

Rules on transforming your council house

According to Gov, the kind of improvements you can make to your council property depends on the type of tenancy you have.

Introductory tenants are usually limited to minor improvements like redecorating inside.

If you’re a secure tenant, you have the right to carry out improvements to your property. These include:

  • installing a new bathroom or kitchen
  • building an extension
  • putting up a garden shed or greenhouse
  • installing a new gas fire or fireplace
  • cavity wall insulation
  • redecorating the outside of a house
  • fitting an aerial or satellite dish

You might need your council’s written permission for work you do. Contact your council if you’re not sure.

How to do your council house up on the cheap

  • Take inspiration from pricier shops and head to B&M, Home Bargains for interior decorations.
  • Head to YouTube for easy to follow tutorials on how to decorate rather than paying for professionals.
  • For a quick glow-up for your floors or anywhere with tiles, opt for stick-on vinyl to save on costs.
  • A lick of paint does wonders to make a room feel brand-new.
  • Switch out kitchen cupboard knobs for modern ones instead of buying brand-new cupboards
