Chelsea files: Blues dodge Club World Cup chaos by relocating while outcasts at home confused over pre-season return

CHELSEA have dodged a Club World Cup storm by setting up camp in Florida this week.

The Blues decided to upsticks and move to Miami last week despite playing their last 16 game being held in Charlotte, North Carolina. That is 729 miles away.

After beating Benfica they will return to Philadelphia on Friday for a quarter final date with Palmeiras – the team they beat to win the 2022 CWC.

Chelsea spent almost a week in Philly playing two group games but have decided to stay down South and bask in the sunshine of South Beach.

And just as well, where last week it was blistering hot sunshine and humidity making it ‘almost impossible to train’ as boss Enzo Maresca put it, this week it is thunderstorms.

Travel to Philadelphia has been severely hampered by torrential downpours and lightning in the skies above.

Several UK journalists heading to Philly in advance of the team encountered serious disruption and delays to their journeys. Planes were grounded for hours because it was too dangerous to fly.

LOAN RANGERS

While Maresca and his squad are working away in Florida, those left behind are not sure when they’re needed at Cobham.

A number of players coming back from loan and up for sale this summer were not named in Chelsea’s Club World Cup squad.

Ben Chilwell, Raheem Sterling, Axel Disasi, Djordje Petrovic and Joao Felix all came back from loans and were omitted from the 28-man list.

Wesley Fofana, continuing to recover from injury, was also left behind.

The first team’s pre-season will obviously be disrupted by the Club World Cup – with Maresca saying they may only have a week of preparations before the Premier League season should they go all the way in America.

However, none of those back in England have been tipped off as to when they’re needed for pre-season.

Most Premier League clubs not involved in the Club World Cup will be back preparing for the new season from next week.

OUR HOUSE

‘LONDON, IT’S OUR HOUSE’ was the cheeky dig fired at Arsenal in a perfectly placed advert as part of a marketing campaign for Chelsea’s new home kit.

The advert in question is on display at the Arsenal tube station, just a short walk from the Emirates Stadium, and will be viewed by fans of the Gunners on a daily basis – though we can’t imagine it’s driving many sales in the area.

The ad is in reference to Madness’ song ‘our house’ heavily used in Chelsea’s promotional material, and features a large image of Cole Palmer with his iconic long sleeves on in what looks like a school classroom.

STRAS-SING OUT

BlueCo-owned RC Strasbourg are having the spine of their best team in years torn apart by those also in charge of Chelsea, and their fans are furious about it.

Club captain Habib Diarra is on the verge of joining Premier League new boys Sunderland, player of the Season Djordje Petrovic has been recalled from his loan and looks set to be sold by Chelsea, while star midfielder Andrey Santos is highly rated at Stamford Bridge and will be a part of their squad for next season.

To make things worse, Chelsea have signed their best young defender in Mamadou Sarr, with top goalscorer Emmanuel Emegha to join the Blues in 2026 in transactions that are essentially the same as moving money from your savings account to your current account.

RC Strasbourg will almost inevitably receive some talented youngsters for their troubles, with future world beater Kendry Paez being the favourite to make an impact on loan in eastern France next season.

But this idea is painful for fans of the club who aren’t able to really feel connected to their team if they feel the ability to dream is taken from them.

SunSport spoke to Alexandre, a spokesperson for the Strasbourg supporters federation about their star men being moved to the Premier League, and the feeling in France towards BlueCo after we took a trip there to uncover the darker side of multi-club ownership just a matter of months ago.

They said: “My feeling as a fan is concerned, I think there are three kinds of situations, with an ascending degree of trouble.

“A player like Diarra would have left anyway for an English club at some point.

“That will help us reach a balance; it just means that BlueCo hasn’t brought much in terms of financial stability… despite what is being advertised. Santos and Petrovic, we knew they were here to maintain or increase their value.

“The cases of Sarr and possibly Emegha are even worse for us and for football overall. A club is using another club as a development team, which will distort the way a free market should function.

“The fact that UEFA and FIFA are tolerating that is a f scandal. Multi-club ownership is ruining football as we knew it… We feel really bad about that.”

RIGHT MAN FOR THE ROB

To any Chelsea fan disappointed at the collapse of a deal for AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan, you may need a hand to hold when you hear this…

But perhaps those in charge of The Blues are right to trust in Robert Sanchez.

The Spaniard was the cause of many frustrations at Stamford Bridge last season, but finished the campaign strongly and has started the Club World Cup brightly too.

In fact, Based on the xG of shots on target faced, Robert Sánchez prevented more goals than any other goalkeeper in the Club World Cup group stage, with three conceded from a 5.35 xG on target according to Opta.

However, being a good shot stopper isn’t all it takes to be a world class number one these days, and it’s with the ball at his feet he seems to cost Chelsea.

He has still shown flashes of that Robert Sanchez, but overall improved of late and will at least have done his value no harm if The Blues are to move him on and re-ignite an interest in Maignan.

BLUE BEAUTY

Chelsea added another trophy to their cabinet this week, as they won the Amputee Cup for the first time.

Captained by former soldier Mark Smith, who took six gunshots to the leg in a training exercise gone wrong in Canada in 2011, the Chelsea FC Foundation dominated the 50-minute final in a 2-0 win vs Everton in the community.

Goals came courtesy of Darren Mitchell from the penalty spot and Jonathan Nyarko secured the win for the Blues, while winger Sofyan Filali picked up the Player of the Match award.

TEEN SPIRIT

Incoming teenager Estevao Willian will naturally attract plenty of interest when Chelsea face Palmeiras in the Club World Cup quarter-final.

But there is another familiar face who could be lining up against The Blues.

Former West Ham midfielder Felipe Anderson has been with the Brazilian club since last year and will surely be keen to rekindle some London derby spirit.

The midfielder was once even linked with a move to Chelsea, while playing for Lazio after leaving the London Stadium – though the deal never materialised.

Terrifying moment gunman opens fire on taxi passengers jumping INTO cab in broad daylight rampage

THIS is the terrifying moment a gunman opens fire on taxi passengers in a broad daylight rampage.

Video footage of the horrific shooting in Oldham has been released by Greater Manchester Police after the gunman was jailed for 16 years.

One man was hit in the back and another, Brandon Nolan, narrowly escaped injury at the hands of Glasgow-Lattibeaudiere, 23.

The violence erupted after Nolan and another man were travelling in a taxi in the Derker area of Oldham on January 16 this year.

As the vehicle reached Shaw Road, the men inside the taxi spotted Glasgow-Lattibeaudiere ride by on a Surron electric bike.

He was dressed in all black with his face covered and saw them in the back of the taxi.

Glasgow-Lattibeaudiere then began to follow the taxi and shouted at the driver to let his passengers out.

The driver pulled up and, fearing for his life, fled.

The gunman shouted at the two passengers again to get out and got into the rear of the taxi himself.

As he does so, one of the passengers jumped on the bike Glasgow-Lattibeaudiere had left on the side of the road.

But as he tried to flee, Glasgow-Lattibeaudiere pulled out his handgun and fired, hitting him in the back.

He then turned the gun through the open car door at Nolan who got out brandishing a knife.

Glasgow-Lattibeaudiere fired again, missing Nolan by inches, but causing damage to the taxi.

Nolan then escaped himself and was picked up by another taxi moments later.

Footage of Glasgow-Lattibeaudiere running away and a series of subsequent arrests has also been released, with armed police storming a block of flats in Hulme, Manchester.

As officers made their way into the apartment, a black Puma man bag was launched from a window.

It was later discovered and contained a small silver revolver that had a cylinder chamber with a capacity for five bullets.

Three bullets were loaded and it was believed the two missing bullets were used in the shooting the day before.

Glasgow-Lattibeaudiere was charged with two counts of attempted murder, section 18 assault, and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.

Ahead of a scheduled trial, he pleaded guilty to Section 18 wounding, attempted Section 18 wounding and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.

He was handed a 16 year-prison sentence.

Brandon Nolan, of no fixed address, was also sentenced to 12 months in prison for possession of a blade.

Detective Chief Inspector Charlotte Whalley from the Major Incident Team at Greater Manchester Police said: “Today’s sentencing marks a significant milestone in our ongoing fight against gun violence in Oldham.

“Glasgow-Lattibeaudiere showed a complete disregard for public safety when he opened fire in broad daylight back in January, endangering not just his intended targets but innocent members of our community who were simply going about their daily lives.

“Over the past year, our firearms unit has worked tirelessly to tackle gun crime across Oldham.

“We’ve increased patrols in known hotspots, conducted numerous weapons sweeps, and worked closely with community leaders to identify and disrupt criminal networks.”

China building giant ‘military city’ fortress ten times bigger than the Pentagon with nuclear-proof bunker ready for WW3

CHINA is secretly constructing a massive new military fortress ten times bigger than the Pentagon.

The “Beijing Military City” is kitted with a doomsday bunker ready for WW3 and could serve as a wartime command centre, according to US intelligence.

The huge new base aligns with the Chinese People’s Liberation Army’s goal to reform the military by 2027[/caption] Illustration comparing the size of a new military base in Beijing to the Pentagon.

The Pentagon is famously the world’s largest office building – but will be dwarfed by the new facility which is more than 4km across.

It occupies a sprawling site about 20 miles southwest of the capital Beijing.

There is no visible military presence around the complex, but US intelligence officials believe it is designed to play a key role in China‘s future military endeavours.

Xi Jinping is rapidly building up a nuclear arsenal which, in a decade’s time, could rival that of the US.

With nuclear armament comes the need for more robust protection against nukes from other nations – hence the bunker beneath the fortress.

The construction of the complex was first reported by the Financial Times, with satellite pictures showing its development.

In February 2022, the site was filled with residential buildings and large areas of open land in an area north of the Chonqing Reservoir.

A year later, it could be seen that the site had largely been cleared out in preparation for a massive construction project – which appeared to kick off in mid-2024.

By the June of that year, the site had been completely overhauled wit a new system of surrounding tunnels and roads.

According to the Chinese government, the new facility does not exist.

There is no official mention of the construction project, and the Chinese embassy claims no knowledge of it.

But the watertight restrictions around the site suggests otherwise.

Access is strictly prohibited, and all drones and cameras are banned.

Hiking trails near to the site have also been erased to avoid any prying eyes.

A former senior US intelligence official told the FT that the new command centre could replace China’s existing military headquarters dating from the Cold War.

The source said: “The size, scale, and partially buried characteristics of the new facility suggest it will replace the Western Hills complex as the primary wartime command facility.”

Renny Babiarz, a former imagery analyst at the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, told the paper that satellite images appeared to show about 100 cranes working away at the site.

With deep underground tunnels and spaces reinforced in concrete, a China researcher told the FT that the complex had “all the hallmarks of a sensitive military facility”.

They said: “Nearly 10 times bigger than the Pentagon, it’s fitting for Xi Jinping’s ambitions to surpass the US.

“This fortress only serves one purpose, which is to act as a doomsday bunker for China’s increasingly sophisticated and capable military.”

The new base suggests that China has growing military ambitions, and aligns with the Chinese People’s Liberation Army’s goal to reform the military by 2027.

‘Squeezed middle will not be forgotten’ insists Harris in Budget vow amid Govt parties row on €1k college fee increase

THE GOVERNMENT will have enough cash to cut college fees, slash childcare costs and provide a boost for businesses in the upcoming budget despite “sobering” warnings about the economic impacts of Trump tariffs, Simon Harris has claimed.

It comes as Fianna Fail and Fine Gael clashed over the issue of third level fees with Higher Education Minister James Lawless indicating that the cost of going to college could go back up by €1,000 next year.

The last government introduced temporary cuts of €1,000 to student fees as part of cost of living packages in recent budgets.

This brought fees from €3,000 down to €2,000.

However, Higher Ed Minister James Lawless revealed this week that the cut won’t be continued in the upcoming budget as he claimed: “If I don’t have a cost-of-living package, I can’t do those kind of measures that were done last year.”

This sparked a furious reaction from Fine Gael, with party leader Simon Harris messaging his TDs and Senators to tell them that the Government will still live up to its promise to abolish fees.

The coalition partners are at odds on how to best ease the financial burden on students as Fianna Fail favour targeted measures for those who most need support while Fine Gael want universal cuts for everyone.

Taoiseach Micheal Martin today confirmed there was no funding earmarked to avoid college fees climbing back up by €1,000 and the matter would be part of budget negotiations.

The Taoiseach told reporters in Japan that Government leaders had a “sobering enough meeting” with Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe and Public Expenditure Minister Jack Chambers over the weekend.

The money ministers warned about the economic impact from Donald Trump’s tariffs and the uncertainty this brought to international trade which boosts the State’s coffers every year.

The Fianna Fail leader said the Government has made commitments on widening access to college grants and for third level students with disabilities.

However, Simon Harris today claimed the “squeezed middle” in Ireland will not be forgotten in the upcoming budget as he doubled down on commitments to abolish college fees.

The Fine Gael leader said: “There is still space to do things and yes, governments are about choices.

“I think if you reduce college fees by €1,000, it is roughly the equivalent of putting about €1.20 on each social welfare payment.

“I’m not making judgement calls on these things, but I’m just saying that there are lots of things government does in budgets.

“What you do on a pension, what you do for carers, what you do for students, what you do for tax – all of these things need to be considered in the round.

‘THEY WON’T BE FORGOTTEN’

“But one thing is for sure, hard working people who are getting up for work everyday, the squeezed middle, call them what you want – they won’t be forgotten about. They can’t be.”

Opposition parties today claimed the coalition were flip-flopping on student fees as they called for clarity for families.

And they are organising a protest outside Leinster House next week with students to demand that the €1,000 cut to fees be made permanent.

Labour leader Ivana Bacik said: “It seems we are hurtling towards yet another U-turn from this chaotic Coalition.

“After flip-flops on Rent Pressure Zones and tax policy, the latest retreat involves a planned hike in college fees – revealed by Minister Lawless on national radio.

“The increase in student fees will hit families already struggling under the weight of rising costs, during a cost of living crisis.”
