Liverpool icon Dirk Kuyt leaves role as Beerschot boss after rollercoaster spell including title triumph and relegation

LIVERPOOL icon Dirk Kuyt has left his role as Beerschot boss after a rollercoaster spell in Belgium.

The 44-year-old had only taken charge of Dutch minnows ADO Den Haag before being snapped up by Beerschot in December 2023.

Kuyt made an immediate impact at the second-tier side as he guided them to promotion by winning the title.

But the former striker’s time in the top-flight was a disaster as Beerschot finished bottom with just five wins from 36 outings.

And despite remaining popular with fans, Kuyt has now been shown the door by his club.

A Beerschot statement confirmed: “The club sincerely thanks Kuyt for his dedication, commitment and positive contribution.

“His energy and involvement were a source of inspiration within the group of players.

“We wish him every success in the rest of his coaching career.”

Kuyt is now on the hunt for a new role and will be hoping his next steps mirror the success of his career as a player.

After banging in 149 goals during eight seasons in his native Netherlands, Kuyt left Feyenoord for Liverpool in 2006.

The forward, who became a hit with supporters for his non-stop work rate, netted 71 goals in 285 games while leading Liverpool to Carabao Cup glory in 2012.

After leaving in 2012, he spent three seasons with Turks Fenerbahce where he won the league title.

Kuyt then rejoined Dutch giants Feyenoord and scored a final-day hat-trick to secure the 2017 Eredivisie title before retiring 72 hours later.

Kuyt also enjoyed success with his international side and scored 24 goals in 104 outings as the Netherlands lost the 2010 World Cup final to Spain before finishing third four years later.

Fulham looking to bring back Joao Palhinha just 12 months after £48m Bayern transfer but face major issue

FULHAM are eyeing a sensational swoop to bring Joao Palhinha back to the Cottage — just a year after he joined Bayern Munich for £48million.

The Portuguese midfielder, 29, endured a nightmare debut season in Germany and could now be handed a Premier League lifeline.

The midfielder has started only seven league games for the German giants[/caption]

Palhinha’s move to Bayern was meant to be the next big step in his career, but instead he’s barely had a look-in under Vincent Kompany.

The ex-Fulham ace started just SEVEN Bundesliga games all season and failed to register a single goal or assist in 17 appearances across all competitions.

An injury saw him sidelined for over two months and his confidence has taken a hit.

Now the Bundesliga champs are ready to cash in if the right offer comes along.

Palhinha still wants to fight for his spot in Munich but Fulham are among a clutch of Prem clubs sniffing around.

Mail Online report that an initial loan deal is being discussed but his hefty wages, though could throw a spanner in the works.

Palhinha joined the Cottagers in 2022 and quickly became a fan favourite with his tough tackling in midfield.

A deadline day move to Bayern collapsed in the summer of 2023, before the Germans finally got their man 12 months later.

Palhinha was part of Portugal’s Nations League-winning squad earlier this month but played just one minute across the semi and final.

Fulham have yet to make any major moves in the market but are clearing the decks.

They have 13 players including Willian and Carlos Vinicius, heading for the exit door when their contracts expire at the end of June.

Under Marco Silva- Fulham have become a stable Premier League side finishing 11th last season and 10th season before that.

South Korea lift bizarre little-known 26-year ban on signing foreign goalkeepers

A 26-YEAR ban on foreign goalkeepers in South Korea’s top soccer league has been lifted effective from the start of the 2026 season.

Only Korean goalkeepers have been allowed to play in the K League, the oldest professional domestic league in Asia since 1999.

The rule was originally introduced to protect homegrown talent when there were only 10 professional clubs.

Following a board meeting in Seoul this week, the K League announced that with 26 professional clubs now competing across the top two tiers, there’s enough room to accommodate international goalkeepers.

The increase in the number of clubs means there are sufficient opportunities for domestic goalkeepers to play, even with the inclusion of foreigners.

The board said in a statement: “Starting in 2026 clubs will be permitted to register foreign goalkeepers.

“The K League previously restricted their participation beginning in 1996 and introduced a full ban in 1999.

“To encourage the development of domestic goalkeepers as most clubs at the time relied on foreign players in the position.

“We have considered the fact that, with foreign player registrations restricted, the salary increase rate of domestic goalkeepers has risen disproportionately compared to outfield players.”

There have reportedly been concerns over a shortage of quality keepers in the country due in part to the expanded size of modern rosters which typically include three or four goalkeepers.

The decision to lift the ban is now expected to directly increase the number of foreign players in the K League.

The move also brings the K League in line with other major Asian leagues, such as those in Japan, Saudi Arabia, and China.

Another rule that was introduced last season was a homegrown classification for youth players of foreign nationality who have spent a significant period developing in South Korea.

If a foreign player has been registered with a domestic amateur team for three consecutive years, or a total of five years, before signing their first professional contract, they are now classified as a domestic player and will not occupy a foreign player slot.

Moment burglar smashes into nan’s home before beating her to death in attack heard by helpless daughter – as he’s jailed

A BURGLAR who beat a gran to death has been jailed for life after he was captured in terrifying doorbell footage smashing into her home.

Catherine “Queenie” Flynn, 69, was dragged from her bed by Dean Mears, who broke every bone in her face in the random killing.

Her daughter Natasha Flynn-Farrell was forced to listen to her mum’s final moments after the attack was caught on a doorbell cam.

Mears has now been jailed for life with a minimum of 27 years after he was convicted of murder.

Sentencing, Judge Rhys Rowlands said the killing was “truly horrific” and “senseless”.

The judge added: “Mrs Flynn had been an extremely vulnerable lady who was killed by you in what should have been the safety of her own home after you had broken in.”

Footage showed Mears ringing the bell at the home in Rhyl, North Wales, after he had taken cannabis and ketamine.

The 34-year-old, who did not know Catherine, was then captured smashing a downstairs window to gain access to the house to burgle it.

Once inside, Mears stomped on 4ft 10ins Catherine 15 times in a “senseless” attack.

Tragically, the doorbell footage triggered a message on Natasha’s phone – meaning she was forced to helplessly listen to her mum.

Brave Natasha kept the app open in order to record the video, which provided key evidence in the harrowing case.

As a result, she told how she just “had to watch it play out” as her mum desperately begged “please don’t”.

Mears could also be heard yelling, “Where are the keys?” as Catherine pleaded with him not to hurt her.

Natasha said: “It was horrendous, it was sickening.”

Mears was then captured just two minutes later throwing himself through the broken window and fleeing.

Frail Catherine, who used a Zimmer frame, suffered catastrophic injuries before dying the next day in hospital.

Caernarfon Crown Court heard after the horror last October, Mears returned to his pal’s home and stripped off his trousers and underwear.

He was then seen on CCTV walking semi-naked around the town.

Mears admitted he had carried out the attack but claimed he had no recollection.

Prosecutor Andrew Jones said Mears had left Catherine “dying on the floor of her own bedroom”.

A post-mortem likened the injuries Catherine suffered to those seen in car crashes.

A pathologist said the wounds were caused by “repeated, severe blunt force trauma that shattered all her facial bones”.

He added: “He inflicted such severe damage to the face of Mrs Flynn that she had no chance of surviving this vicious, unprovoked assault.”

Catherine’s family described the gran as a “rock” and best friend to her three children and said “her house was so welcoming and warm”.

They said: “Catherine was a wonderful mum, nan, great nan, auntie, and sister, and also a second mother to many and a great friend.

“She loved her family more than anything, she was a fantastic cook and was always wanting to feed anyone in her company.

“Her pride and joy (after her family) was her love for her garden, she would sit for hours just watching the birds and the bees come in and out of her little wonderland, with every flower imaginable.

“We often wondered how her garden was always so beautiful – now we know, it’s because she was the ray of sunshine.”

Nine games loved by millions made FREE before they disappear from download – last chance to claim them

VIDEOGAME maker Sega will soon pull nine beloved retro games from app stores, according to reports.

But not before making them completely free.

The Japanese company has revealed it is ending support for the titles, which were ported to iOS and Android several years ago.

Before they disappear, Sega has made them free to download and has removed all in-app purchases, according to Android Authority.

The games will still be playable after Sega ends its support – so you might want to go download them before they vanish from app stores.

They work offline too, so you don’t even need to be attached to Wi-Fi.

Here’s all the games that are affected:

There doesn’t appear to be an official announcement from Sega; however, the prices have already been removed on both the Apple and Android app stores.

An in-game pop-up says: “Support for this game will be discontinued, but you can continue playing offline!”

These games were part of the Sega Forever programme, which made classic retro games available on modern platforms.

However, this programme was shut down in 2023.

Sega reportedly already delisted other titles included in Sega Forever, including Altered Beast Classic and The Revenge of Shinobi Classic, from app stores in 2023.

There doesn’t appear to be an official deadline for their removal from app stores.

So you should install them now while you have the chance.

“Love me some retro action…. Or as I like to call them, “games from my youth”,” one person wrote on X.

Another added: “Free is free! And some real classics in there.”

While a third person wrote: “Bro why is this not always the way. Literally every closed “eshop” should just go out like this when they do (but they shouldn’t).”

The 35p hack to banish flies from your home this summer mixing kitchen staple with soap – it works in minutes

EXPERTS have revealed a 35p hack to banish flies from your home this summer.

Summer is finally here, and according to the Met Office, a heatwave is “likely” to occur this weekend.

Flies are attracted to the scent of vinegar[/caption]

However, although there are so many positives to summer, from warm weather to longer days, it also has its downsides, such as the emergence of irritating pests.

House flies can be an incredible annoyance at this time of year, as they sneak in through open doors and windows.

Fruit flies are also a real problem during summer, as they are attracted to foods which decay quicker in heat.

Chasing them around with rolled-up newspapers and makeshift fly swatters can seem an endless task, and can ruin your summer’s evening.

However, according to experts there is a simple purse friendly hack you can use to banish the critters.

All you need is some big standard washing up liquid and some vinegar.

Healthline writes: “A mixture of vinegar and dish soap can help you trap flies such as fruit flies.”

To try out the hack, simply mix equal parts water and vinegar in a glass.

Then, add a few drops of washing up liquid to the mix.

Cover the glass with clingfilm, and then poke some small holes in the top.

“Flies will be attracted to the vinegar in the glass and will fly through the holes”, Healthline said.

“However, the dish soap causes the flies to sink instead of being able to land on the vinegar.”

Flies are attracted to the scent of the vinegar as it is similar to that of decaying fruit.

Vinegar also contains acetic acid, which is a chemical that builds up during fermentation.

Keep pests out all summer

IF you want to ensure that your home is pest free this summer, here's what you need to know.

Hornets and wasps – hate the smell of peppermint oil so spraying this liberally around your patio or balcony can help to keep them at bay.

Moths – acidic household white vinegar is effective for deterring moths. Soak some kitchen roll in vinegar and leave it in your wardrobe as a deterrent.

Flying ants – herbs and spices, such as cinnamon, mint, chilli pepper, black pepper, cayenne pepper, cloves, or garlic act as deterrents.

Mosquitoes – plants, herbs and essential oil fragrances can help deter mozzies inside and out. Try eucalyptus, lavender and lemongrass.

You may already have a bottle of vinegar in the kitchen, but if not, you can pick it up from Sainsbury’s for as little as 35p.

If you don’t want your home to smell of vinegar, This Morning pro, Nancy Birtwhistle, recently shared a sweeter-smelling hack.

“They [flies] hate the smell of citrus and they hate the smell of cloves,” she said, explaining how easy it is to keep them at bay.

With this in mind, she suggested creating a DIY method to deter the pesky insects.

All you need to do is cut a few lemons in half and then stick the cloves into the juicy part.

Although the fresh scent is lovely for us humans, the flies can’t stand it and will find somewhere else to go.
